The Tropical EP (double 7" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: AOS 010. Rel: 30 Jun 21
Aceedo Domingo - "Corre Riba" (4:25)
Those Guys From Athens - "Na Bola" (3:45)
DJ Laurel - "Peanut Man" (5:08)
Monsieur Van Pratt - "Lose Your Mind" (4:24)
Review: As the title suggests, there's an undeniably humid, sun-kissed and tropical feel to Act of Sedition's latest double-dose of seven-inch re-edits. Accedo Domingo lives up to his name by adding squelchy TB-303 lines and relaxed house beats to a stirring Cape Verde dancefloor jam on "Corre Riba", before Those Guys From Athens deliver a chunky, house-style revision of a turn-of-the-80s MPB classic ("No Bola"). Over on the second "45", DJ Laurel tools up an undeniably funky disco number (the stellar "Peanut Man") before Monsieur Von Pratt makes an already heavy disco-funk number even weightier ("Lose Your Mind").

Act Of Sedition - "LDCE" (MikeandTess edit) (4:30)

The Blackbyrds - "Rock Creek Park" (Lego edit) (4:38)
Michael Jackson - "PYT" (Bully Boy Refix) (4:40)
Review: Another double dose of seven-inch action from the Art of Sedition crew, who once again offer up a quartet of floor-focused re-edits stretched across two dinky slabs of wax. Mighty Mouse's punchy instrumental dub of Don Ray's "Got To Have Nothing" also hits the spot. On the second disc, Lego Edit flexes his muscles with a locked in, house style take of the bass-heavy classic "Rock Creek Park", before Bully Boy does his best Reflex impression on what sounds like a ground-up stems revision of MJ classic "PYT".

Cat: HR 009. Rel: 03 Jun 21
Altered Tapes - "The Break Down (Eazy Goes To Memphis)" (3:59)
DJ Platurn - "King Penguin" (Funky beats edit) (4:01)
Review: Chicago's Altered Tapes crew offer up their own unique take on a West Coast gangster rap classic with the A-side of this one on US label Heat Rock. It's the label's seventh outing and places focus on Memphis soul and funk territory. 'The Break Down' is a big, horn led jam with funk beats and crisp rhythms. Reverse this limited 7" to find Oakland's own DJ Platurn. He smashes out a drum heavy, break-heavy edit that pays homage to a cut and paste great. It's funky, filled with vocal samples and mad keys and packs real heat.

Summer Jam (feat DJ Deviant) (3:53)
Back For More (4:05)
Review: Manchester producer Atomphunk's collaboration with Seattle duo Mugs and Pockets, featuring DJ Deviant, is a standout summer release. 'Summer Jam' is a vibrant track with a popping funk bass line and lively rhymes that evoke the spirit of the Native Tongues, blended seamlessly with the Grand Central/Fat City groove and the West Coast bounce of Jurassic 5. This track is poised to be Regulate's biggest hit yet. On the flip side, 'Back For More' takes a more laid-back approach, with Atomphunk crafting a synth-driven groove perfect for those hot, sticky summer days. Crisp beats and Pockets' (from MAP) smooth delivery make this tracka great blend of funk, hip-hop and groove.

Name Of The Game (reissue)
Cat: NW 513. Rel: 23 Nov 22
Brian Bennett & Alan Hawkshaw - "Name Of The Game" (4:25)
Dave Richmond - "Confunktion" (4:38)
Review: Measured Mile is a new 7" label run by regular Ace consultant and confidante Bob Stanley. The plan is to release DJ-friendly 45s that are either very rare or previously unavailable on seven-inch. On this new one come two pieces from esteemed library musicians - the well known pairing of Alan Hawkshaw and Brian Bennett, and Dave Richmond. 'Name Of The Game' is a slow instrumental blues piece with beats ready to be plundered for hip-hop beats that once soundtracked a 1970s aftershave ad, while Richmond's 'Confunktion' is a motivational builder-upper with drums and organs aplenty.

Art Blakey - "Stretching" (J Rocc edit) (3:43)
Digable Planets - "Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" (4:18)
Review: With a refreshed label design, the Originals series seems in no trouble of running out of steam any time soon as catalogue number 30 hones into view. The 29th rinky dinky Originals squares the focus on Art Blakey's "Stretching" with one of the world's best DJs, J Rocc, offering up a fine 45 treatment of the Jazz classic on the A Side. Representing the sample flip on the flip is Digable Planets and "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)" which deftly pulled out the horns and bassline from Blakey's original and looped them up for what is now regarded as an early '90s hip hop classic.

James Brown - "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose" (4:05)
Duralcha - "Ghet-To Funk" (3:19)
Review: The Breaks & Beats 7" series is crucial for those who love, well, breaks and beats. It turns out high powered tackle for had working DJs and often draws on classic material for its source sounds. This one is a reissue of a recent 7" that is again hand numbered and limited. First up is James Brown's 'Give It Up Or Turn It Loose' with its big horns, guttural vocal cries and relentlessly funky drums. The flip side Duralcha cut 'Ghet-To Funk"' is more languid and loose, with rolling drums and fat bass. d.'

Up Above The Rock
Cat: OG 016. Rel: 09 Oct 13
Ray Bryant - "Up Above The Rock"
Kool G Rap & DJ Polo - "On The Run"
Review: This seven from the Originals label perfectly encapsulates what the series is all about, pairing a track whose elements have been sampled numerous times over with perhaps the best example of how it was musically reinterpreted. Even if you don't know "Up Above The Rock", the title track from the 1968 LP by Philadelphia based jazz pianist and composer Ray Bryant, by name you'll immediately recognise it's distinctive break and piano riff. This latter element was incorporated superbly on the early 90s hip hop cut "On The Run" from Kool G Rap and DJ Polo which lines the B Side, slowed down somewhat but still distinctively the work of Bryant.

Bump All Night
Cat: DB 012. Rel: 12 Jul 17
Billy Cole, Davis & Crooks - "Woman Bump All Night" (3:26)
Billy Cole - "Woman" (3:09)
Review: For contractual reasons, Jamaican soul singer turned composer, producer and arranger Winston Francis often worked under the alias "Billy Cole". In the 1970s, he released a string of fine singles and one album using the pseudonym, most of which have now become collector's items. "Bump All Night", a fine chunk of intergalactic Caribbean funk drenched in Clavinet lines and dub-delay, was first released in 1975 and features the hitherto unknown Davis & Crooks (believed to be Bobby Davis and David Crooks AKA Dave Barker). Francis goes solo on the flip side, lending his Nat King Cole meets Harry Nilsson style voice to the string-laden torch song "Woman". This was originally the title track of his sought-after album of the same name and has previously never been released on a "45".

Stronger (main) (4:19)
Stronger (dub) (4:35)
Review: After the March drop of this record caused quite the stir, the label is now back with a limited edition white vinyl version to make it all the more vital an addition to your shelves. Cool Million is a Danish and German duo and their track 'Stronger' is the track and the title of their sixth full-length album from 2019. It is a positive and upbeat anthem that is sure to reign in the innocent bystanders to party. The Dub is a super-cool alternative version that reminds of us classic roller-skating funk track from Midnight Star or Kool & The Gang. A classy party starter, for sure.

Andy Cooper - "Why You Buggin'" (feat The Allergies) (3:14)
Dr Syntax/Pete Cannon - "Downtime" (The Allergies remix) (3:27)
Review: More all-action fare from the popular Bomb Strikes label, an imprint that has gradually moved away from the party-hearty mash-ups and bootleg remixes on which it made its name. This tidy seven-inch single is notable for the presence of Bristol crew The Allergies. On the A-side they guest on Andy Cooper's "Why You Buggin", a bustling, funk-fuelled fusion of hip-hop and rock that sounds like a wholehearted tribute to the Beastie Boys circa "Licensed To Ill". Over on the flip the West Country party-starters turn remixers, delivering a head nodding, toe-tapping take on Dr Syntax and Pete Canon's hip-hop/funk/ska fusion number "Downtime". Like the A-side, it sounds like a bona fide dancefloor bomb.

D Lord - "Start The World"
Werner Williams - "You've Got Style"
Review: Universal Cave Records 003 pairs another record digging and DJ duo, Philadelphia's D. Lord and Werner Williams. D. Lord's 'Start the World' is stampeding euro funk with chainsawing clav and an unrelenting bass groove. Maximum funk effect achieved with vital precision. Werner Williams' 'You've Got Style' exudes cool. It's one part psychedelic synth groove and one part cockeyed classic rock, soaring harmonies & juju for days - a long lost cousin to Fox's 'The Juggler.'

Soul Brother (3:44)
Review: Boom! Ultra rare outernational funk reissue action by the new Habibi Funk imprint! Dalton were a late '60s soul band formed in Tunis by a group of American music enthusiasts, and their one and only LP under the Dalton name was independently released and super rare until now. "Alech" nears psychedelic territories thanks to its echoing vocals and trippy percussion, whereas "Soul Brother" is more of a classic soul ballad, but filled with the band's own native roots, of course. Be sure to check, this is hot and recommended for the diggers.

Red Light (Peter Solo) (3:35)
Review: An instantly recognisable voice in the funk sphere for over 60 years, you can't talk about Togolese music with mentioning the funkmaster and 'King of Gazo' himself Roger Damawuzan. Containing an unreleased single from his upcoming album 'Seda', this double single is funk so heavy it'll weigh you down. 'Fine Fine' is a slick and fast-paced track of contentment - leave the man alone he said he's fine! - and 'Red Light' is a squeaky clean showcase of what made Damawuzan so popular in Togo with his carefree and charismatic attitude. All you funk lovers out there have got to give this a spin.

It has lost none of its charm or magic all these years later as this new pressing attests. The rolling grooves, the effortlessly epic vocals and the serene string all ooze class. On the flip, he gets more romantic with the perfectly tender and intimate 'Never Felt So Good.' It's beefed up by bold baritone vocals, contemporary R&B production and gooey bass. A killer 45 for sure.

Hey Hey Ookini Maidoari (4:34)
Review: Japanese electronic disco producer and performer Fujisawa Hideki aka. Dance Man coined the term "mirrorballism" as the philosophy behind his ultra-tight brand of disco. Four albums of mirror-ballistic albums, New Generation Dance Classics Volumes 1-4, appeared before his fifth album, Funkoverlic, surfaced in 2004, from which this ingenious pair of trax, 'Bomber' and 'Hey Hey Ookini Maidoari', came. Translating roughly to "there is a lot of everything" from Japanese, the latter track brims with posse-backed instrumental disco-hop steeze, worthy of bombastic emceeing should any rap collective fancy it. 'Bomber' is comparatively funky, save for its devilish wax scratches, giving way to one of Dance Man's more glamorous vocal lines.

Dancefloor Outlaws - "Meet Me"
Basement Freaks - "Mo Diggity"
Review: Cute little 7 inchers don't come around that often, but when they do it's worth paying attention, especially when the quality is as good as this mighty double A. Dancefloor Outlaws take the lead, and upkeep the party rep they've developed previously on Disco Cakes. Instant sing-along power and a real cock-sure strut to the groove, it's a wonder they've crammed so much power onto such a tiny slice of vinyl. Basement Freaks takes over the B for some equally ravishing funk; taking Blackstreet's massive smash and bringing it up bang up to date for the nu funk generation, this will instantly bring booty to your dancefloor. Comes with a free download code too.
