Let My People Go (3:58)
Review: Darondo's "Legs" - a sexually charged chunk of heady Californian funk-soul fusion rich in punchy horns, killer drum breaks and eyes-closed lead vocals - has long been one of those "Holy Grail" records for soul collectors. As a result, original copies of the 1974 "45" change hands for hundreds of pounds apiece, making this Ubiquity release a genuine blessing for those with reduced record buying budgets. The sublime title track resides on the A-side, with the more relaxed, groovy and down-low "Let My People Go" taking pride of place on the flip. In a word: essential.

Legs (part 1)
Let My People Go
Review: One of 10 separate 45s to be released after initially appearing as part of the Groove Merchant box set in early 2011. It's a straight reissue here from Luv N Haight, who dust off the original single from 1974 from little known US label Af Fa. Perhaps better known for his soul classic "Didn't I?", Darondo spills the beans of one of his passions in life belonging to lovely ladies on "Legs". Falsetto Curtis Mayfield-like vocals screech over a funky mid tempo electric bass offset by brass stabs aplenty. On the flip, "Let Me People Go" has Darondo doing an unintentional Al Green impersonation to fine effect with a sleazy southern guitar styled funk groove.

Sonderbar (4:26)
Review: Sound Essence has got there rights to a real rare gem from East Germany's early 70s jazz scene here and it features the Horst Kruger Septet. Known as one of the top soul-jazz and beat combos of their time, they recorded two previously unreleased tracks that exemplify their unique sound. 'Ich will die Zeit nicht bereuen' is a standout German-language soul-beat hit with hard-hitting, rocking beats, enhanced by a bold brass section. The second track, 'Sonderbar,' is a soulful jazz sounds with repetitive lyrics and groovy bass topped with guitar, drums and organ. Add in a flute solo and dreamy Hammond outro and you have a real doozy.

Wilson Das Neves - "Pick Up The Pieces" (3:14)
Som Tres - "Tanga" (2:03)
Review: Wilson das Neves was is a legendary Brazilian percussionist most well known for being part of Os Ipanemas.

His cover of Average White Band's 'Pick Up The Pieces' recorded with his 'conjunto' ensemble, takes the track into funky samba territory, laden with percussion and horns.

Originally released on his 'Wilson Das Neves E Conjunto - O Som Quente E O Das Neves LP in 1976. Previously unreleased on 7".

Som Tres - Tanga
A Mr Bongo all-time Brazilian Funk favourite. Tearing drums, vocals and piano packed into just over 2 minutes. Killer.

Som Tres were a trio formed by prolific pianist, arranger and producer Cesar Camargo Mariano. Originally appeared on the 'Um E Pouco, Dois E Bom, Este Som Tres E Demais' LP on Odeon Brazil in 1971. Previously unreleased on 7".

Moving On (version) (4:03)
Review: Rock A Shaka is hella busy right now and continues to drop mad heat on a very busy schedule. It is now Dave & Earnest who step up with their unique take on reggae. This one is coloured by disco and boogie with dazzling results. 'Moving On' has big horns over soul-stepping beats and retro 80s drum sounds. The vocals drip with sexiness and a killer bassline finishes in style. The version dials it back to a fleshy dub with the tooting horns left in to get your juices going.

Mathar (3:42)
Regards From Freddie Horowitz (4:39)
Review: The Dave Pike Set was a five-piece jazz band active for only four years from '68 to '72. But in that short time that manages seven albums, and had some standout single success. Two of their biggest - 1969's 'Mathar'/'I'm On My Way' - are repressed here on a 7" that will cost you upwards of L300 if you can find an original. There are some heavy sitar vibes on the a-side to start with, eventually making way for a strident 60s beat that is all psyched-out jazz stylings and raw drums. The flip is a much more after-dinner vibe, with harmonic keys setting a silky tone.

Golden Years (instrumental - previously unreleased 45 edit) (4:02)
Fame (instrumental - previously unreleased Funk 45 edit) (4:03)
Review: Bowie is a new label that says it intends to "dig deep into the unreleased sides of pop superstars material from the past." The opening gambit is a strong one that should hook you in for more as it comes in the form of a 7" with two fine funk instrumentals, neither of which have been put out before. 'Golden Years' has lovely live drums and meandering guitar licks for some carefree listening, while 'Fame' has a deep cut groove that rises and falls in dramatic fashion with more neat and tidy riffs adding the detail next to the big licks.

Tambor De Cura
Cat: BJ 737. Rel: 02 Nov 23
Tambor De Cura (with Guinu) (4:02)
Devotion (4:04)
Review: Daniel David (FKA Trailer Limon) makes a great impression on Bastard Jazz with his first solo record. This 7" finds him link with the Jazz Mafia for a feature after he has done plenty of work with the legendary San Francisco duo the Pendletons. Because of that he is credited with helping to kickstart the Bay Area's modern funk resurgence but here he shows he has plenty of his own skills too. 'Tambor De Cura' (with Guinu) is bustling jazz that is vibrant and vivacious with big horns, steamy jungle atmospheres, humid pads, bird calls and many other great details that form a hefty groove. 'Devotion' is then a funky jazz fusion with cosmic pads and lush vocals.

Yes I Am (instrumental) (3:57)
Review: Over the last five years, few contemporary soul artists have more successfully blurred the boundaries between '60s soul, vintage funk and gospel than Michelle David and regular backing band Gospel Sessions (a studio outfit helmed by her producers and collaborators Onno Smit and Paul Williamson. 'Yes I Am', David's first single of 2021, continues where her previous work left off. It sees her delivering a soulful, super-sweet lead vocal atop a wonderfully retro-sounding soul backing track that reminded us of the similarly inclined work of Durand Jones & The Indications and Timmion Records stalwarts Cold Diamond & Mink. The A-side full vocal take is our pick of the pair, though the accompanying instrumental is also predictably good.

JC Davis - "A New Day (Is Here At Last)" (3:10)
Hell Razah - "Project Jazz" (feat Talib Kweli & MF Doom) (3:47)
Review: The Originals label always does a grand job of pairing the sweetest source material with its famous sampling counterpart, and most importantly they put the originators up front on the A side. This time around they're celebrating the ascendant jazz funk masterpiece 'A New Day (Is Here At Least)' by legendary saxophonist JC Davis, originally released in 1969 and sounding fresh to this day. On the flip comes an open-hearted approach to the iconic brass licks courtesy of Hell Razah, with none other than Talib Kweli and MF Doom in full flow over the top for the impeccable 'Project Jazz' from 2007. Two absolutely golden sides on a perfect little 45, what's not to love?

Life's A Party (4:17)
Expand Your Mind (4:23)
Review: When he moved to Germany in the early 1980s, Hudson People's Reg Hudson quickly connected with Johnny Davis - a funk and soul musician who had originally moved to the country in the 1960s while serving in the U.S Army. They recorded a string of tracks and albums together, though only a small number of these recordings were ever released. 'Expand Your Mind', a gorgeous, synth-enhanced, mid-tempo slab of "groove" music (a kind of warmer, more soulful and generally more organic-sounding sub-genre that sat somewhere between boogie and 80s soul), was one of those - though original copies are very hard to come by. This gem sits on side B of this issue, playing second fiddle to the previously unreleased 'Life's a Party' - a slap-bass, piano-solo-sporting slab of rubbery boogie/jazz-funk fusion.

I've Been Hurt So Many Times (3:13)
Review: P-Vine Japan does great work once more here by bringing back into print some hugely sought-after sounds from the blues and r&b world. The first release in their new series revives Larry Davis' 1969 Kent Records single, which was originally written by Sherwood Fleming. The A-side, 'For 5 Long Years' delivers a gritty mid-tempo funk-blues groove while the B-side, 'I've Been Hurt So Many Times' (a classic subject for a blues tune) channels Willie Cobbs' signature sound. These will be familiar to anyone who has danced at a Northern Soul event and cannot be slept on.

All I Want To Do (3:34)
Review: In 1977 in Portland, writer Ron Stassens assembled members of Pleasure and Transport around Slickaphonic frontman Milton Davis and the result was an album's worth of amazingly soulful disco-funk, re-released in July 2023 under the Albina Music Trust label... However, here for the first time ever, on Soul7/Jazzman records' picture sleeved 7" 45, Milton Davis returns home in this most apt of formats, on only 500 numbered copies with the stand out 'Headed For The Disco'. A gorgeously sweet solid gold soul track that ventures into jazz funk at the beautifully timed electric guitar and organ breaks where the 'get down' is inevitable but satisfyingly returns to the repetitive refrains of the melody. Joyously extending what disco truly means, be that a hustle or a step back, here the breadth of this uplifting genre is celebrated, concluding in a lush decrescendo 'aaaahhhh...'. Add this to the more mid-tempo classically soulful smoochy B-side 'All I Want To Do' and you won't want to hang around, as Soul 7/Jazzman singles whilst applauding rarer grooves notoriously become collectables in themselves.

Feel Like Jumping (4:12)
Perfidious (3:43)
Review: A decade has passed since Daytoner released his first record. Since then, the Cornwall-based party-starter has delivered countless heavyweight slabs of sample-laden funk breaks and hip-hop-fired mash-ups. For his latest trick, he's decided to tool-up Marcia Griffiths' rocksteady classic "Feel Like Jumping". His revision is very much a "light touch" affair, despite the presence of some punchy new hip-hop drums and a sprinkling of spoken word samples. Flipside "Perfidious" is another loved-up, hip-hop ready reggae revision. It, too, hits the spot, suggesting that both cuts will go down a storm on a variety of party-hearty dancefloors.

Michael's Incredible Twin (3:42)
Review: Secord time around for "wild west" funakteer Daytoner's "Apache Street" seven-inch, which has been in high demand since it first hit record stores in 2018. As the title suggests, both cut-and-paste workouts borrow heavily from the Incredible Bongo Band's "Apache", one of the foundation stones of hip-hop culture. The title track is a fine example of a mash-up that works, with Daytoner layering the horn stabs and vocals from Lou Rawls' "Dead End Street" over the famous "Apache" break. That break is prominent on side B, this time underpinning cheery horns, pianos, bass and guitars from the Skatalites' Ska classic "Beardman Ska". It's a simple idea expertly executed.

(It Ain't) All Good (4:03)
Review: Cornish funkateer Daytoner rarely fails to deliver the goods, with his semi-regular seven-inch missives being amongst his most potent releases. He's at it again here, delierving two confirmed party-starting workouts that combine live funk and soul style instrumentation topped off with classic hip-hop acapellas. He begins with 'Life's a Bitch', where fast crew rap flows lifted from a much-loved hip-hop cut ride undulating bass guitar, laidback funk breaks and glistening guitars. He flips the script a little on flipside '(It Ain't) No Good', delivering hip-hop tempo beats, deep bass, luscious electric piano motifs and smart use of one of the most celebrated R&B vocals of the 1990s.

Review: The hard-touring, heavy-funking, Craig Charles-endorsed Cornish six piece Daytona tease us for their album with this cheeky double-A 45". "Needed You" is a straight up northern soul thumper with relentlessly driving beat, gutsy vocals, big piano rolls and crucial flutes while "Sicka" takes us right back to the sixties with a fiery ode to a greenback classic. Sweaty, forthright and tighter than a nun's purse, bring on the album already!

Review: Daytoner have got a new album on the way and we can't wait, but before that the group serve up this sizzling new funk single. This crew are well experienced and have travelled far and wide, taking their funk and soul sound to the UK's greatest stages over the last five years. The album was written in isolation during the lockdown and this new pair of singles is a great taster - 'Time' and 'Keep It Moving' both feature lead singer Lucy's fresh vocals as she muses on the importance of time spent with family and friends. The funk-fuelled brass and breaks keep both tunes vibing.

Two of the devilishly delightful disco tracks from it now make their way onto this tidy 7" from Groovin, who are following up their much loved rare groove Italo 7" series in style. 'Black Star' is all about the knotted funk bass, with the patter of toms up top and mysterious leads taking you into the unknown. On the flip, 'Temptation'
has another exotic lead synth that takes you into a colourful world of psyched out disco sound.

Review: Sandra de Sa's 'Olhos Coloridos' and Equipe Radio Cidade's 'Bons Tempos Sao Paulo' bring vibrant Brazilian boogie back to life in this remastered reissue from Mr Bongo's Brazil 45's series. Sandra de Sa's track, from her 1982 self-titled LP, is a brilliant example of '80s MPB and boogie, featuring the iconic collaboration of Lincoln Olivetti, Robson Jorge, and members from Banda Black Rio. Funky basslines, dreamy Rhodes and jubilant horns complement Sa's outstanding vocals, making it a joyous, danceable piece reminiscent of Tim Maia and Marcos Valle's best. On Side-2, Equipe Radio Cidade's 'Bons Tempos Sao Paulo' transforms Chic's 'Good Times' into a Brazilian boogie delight. Originally a rare promo-only release from 1980, this version infuses the classic melody with samba rhythms, clavinet grooves, and cuica percussion breaks. Voiced by Sao Paulo radio DJs with festive greetings, it adds a unique local flavour to the familiar tune, reminiscent of the era's vibrant Brazilian music scene.

Just two tunes, 'Santos 79' and 'Moon Over Rio' come across like the morning and evening sides of De Santis' lifeworld; the former is a warm, glitzing sonic waxing, full of tweezy approach notes and Simmons drum 'pows'; the latter is a crepuscular waning, contrasting to the other by way of twinkly chime cascades and deeper chromatic blues.
