Ethiopian jazz mastermind Kibrom Birhane presents his latest album 'Here And There', a spiritual-cosmic meditation on indeterminacy. With a full ensemble of brass, chordopone and voice, and with Birhane manning a good bulk of the instruments we hear (piano, organ, krar, talkbox), this project expands on Birhane's roots, drawing on his absorption of thousand-year-old Ethiopian orthodox chanting as a child, as well as his talent at handling the region's most esoteric instruments.

Review: This essential compilation from Africa Seven does a terrific job in highlighting the genuinely unique, dancefloor-focused music recorded by Cameroonian musician Joe Bisso following his move to the United States in the early 1970s. Often heavily percussive, the 14 tracks combine elements of Congolese rumba, Afrobeat and Afro-funk with James Brown style heavy funk and the then emerging sound of underground NYC disco. Highlights are plentiful, from the Moog-laden, Latin-tinged-disco flavours of 'Disco Madonna' and the flash-fried disco-funk extravaganza that is 'Don't Fight The Feeling', to the solo-laden heaviness of Afro-disco banger 'Midnight' and the breathy, seductive goodness of 'Your Love (Part 1)'.

Moja Bhari Moja (8:16)
East West Shuffle (4:57)
Aaj Shanibar (7:58)
Ayee Morshume Be-Reham Duniya (15:38)
Review: Described in the accompanying press release as "the halfway point between Bollywood and Balearic", Rupa Biswas' 1982 debut "Disco Jazz" has long been a favourite of dusty-fingered diggers with a healthy bank balance and a penchant for the quirky. All four tracks are cheery, charming and superior to many "Bollywood disco" records produced in the same period. The sunny disco-boogie of "Moja Bhari Moja" is followed on side A by the delightfully eccentric, bass-powered AOR-disco/funk-rock fusion of "East West Shuffle" and the effortlessly Balearic cheeriness of "Aaj Shanibar". Best of all, though, is the exotic and intoxicating flipside cut "Ayee Morshume Be-Reham Duniya" which expertly joins the dots between cosmic rock and Balearic disco grooves for 16 spellbinding minutes.

Review: Christmas Funk is the kind of album that American R&B singer Aloe Blacc has always wanted to do, claiming he felt the Christmas Spirit needed a funky revival. The concepts and stories on here are inspired by the time spent with family and friends, being a fan of Motown and soulful Christmas carols since he was a kid - not to mention Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole. Featuring eight new original songs that are the perfect complement to the extra funky versions of two undisputed classics, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" and "Last Christmas".

Review: Top Nigerian psych rock from the Black Children Sledge Funk Group, and it seems like PMG Austria are really in it for the kill this week! The label have been putting out said reissues on a non-stop basis, and this little treasure from 1979 is the latest in line of what seems to be a tremendous string of releases. The band's third album, Vol.3: Aviation Grand Father, is soul, funk, and a little bit of early synth wizardry all wrapped up under one roof, and the results are wonderful. Now's your chance to cop it...

Review: Black Market Brass are back on Colemine with a third full length that once again finds them offering up an all new take on Afrobeat that mixes the traditional sounds of the genre with heavy, hypnotic and sci-fi influences. Saxophonist Cole Pulice has said of the record: "We didn't leave the traditional Afro-beat sound behind, but we did allow ourselves to pull from different places with less hesitation." The nine piece album was recorded live to tap which lends it a lived-in feel and mixes organic instrumentation with heavily processed synthesizers, harsh glitches, fuzzed out guitars and raw percussion. It is a truly arresting and infectious listen.

Review: Locking down their chops on the live circuit for years, Minneapolis ten-piece Black Market Brass finally deliver one almighty debut album that's raw, loose and real. All recorded live, there's a rich, warm sound and dynamic as the players ease together from all corners around the campfire of percussion. Bluesy, Afrobeat, jazzy and funky, we hurled around from total horn euphoria of "The Powers" and highlife euphoria the disarming, alarming chaos of "The Grog" by way of the steel drum rough and tumble of "Half A Cig" and a whole load more. Pay attention... This is the sound of band of playing each other inside out. Tight.

The album perfectly captures the dynamic energy of Black Pumas' live shows, allowing fans to relive the electrifying atmosphere that defines their performances. Grammy-nominated Texan psychedelic-soul band Black Pumas, led by Eric Burton and Adrian Quesada, return after their 2019 self-titled debut album - leading to the pair being put up for 'Best New Artist' in 2020 - with a bold statement to break the sophomore album curse. Lead single 'More Than a Love Song' is the perfect introduction to the sound, Burtons commanding voice riding on a wave of progressively zanier instrumental patches and choir vocal samples, with a sultry deep south tone that, oddly, reminds me of CeeLo Green. Quesada's production style is quick and loose, oozing with soul - nothing more to be expected from former member of Grammy-winning funk band Grupo Fantasma. The two describes Black Pumas as an "electric church", the synths and digital organs punctuating Burton's wistful wailing perfectly. If you're looking for a soul release to close out the year, this is it.

Review: Afro7 unearth some incredible Kenyan treasure: Black Savage were one of the many strong voices in the 70s pop culture boom in the freshly independent Nairobi. A fizzy brew of blues, soul, rock, psychedelia all brought together with afrofunk magic and progressive conscious lyricism, their 1975 album Something For Someone is a vital mosaic of flavours ranging from the cosmic rock of "Exotica", the Hendrixian blues of "Do You Really Care" and "Savaged". Sadly it suffered a highly limited press and faded into obscurity. Until now. Afro7 have tracked the band down, detailed their story and brought this 43 year old album back to life with the respect and praise it deserves. Something for all of us.

Review: During Wellington's cultural renaissance, The Black Seeds emerged as trailblazers and soon hooked in audiences with their energetic live shows and earning a reputation as summer festival favourites. In 2004, they blended funk and soul into their signature roots-reggae style to create this, their second studio album which became not only a Triple Platinum album but also a defining moment in modern New Zealand music history. Featuring three hit singles and including the Quadruple Platinum anthem 'So True,' this record embodies the Kiwi summer spirit and Gareth Moon's accompanying video with the band cruising sunlit locales in a classic Holden wagon only cemented that legacy.

Their eponymous Black Sugar album was the debut in 1971 and it has stood the test of time, to be sure: mixing up all forms of jazz, funk and soul, it's a richly layered album of instrumental sounds that range from the steamy and tropical bliss of 'This Time' to the more dance floor facing 'Understanding' which has high-speed 60s-spy cop theme tune vibes.

The album showcases Blackman's keyboard wizardry and soulful vocals across standout tracks like 'Heart's Desire' and 'Holding You Loving You.' Review: Don Blackman's self-titled debut album, released in 1982, stands as a testament to his versatility as a musician, blending jazz-fusion, funk, and r&b with a distinct creative vision. Though it may not have made waves on the charts, its legacy has only grown with time, cementing it as a cult classic in the 80s jazz-funk landscape. Blackman, a skilled keyboardist and vocalist, had already built a name through collaborations with heavyweights like Parliament-Funkadelic and Roy Ayers, but his debut marked a bold foray into the spotlight. The album itself feels like a rich, meticulously crafted groove machine, where Blackman's keyboard wizardry is matched by his soulful vocal delivery. Tracks like 'Heart's Desire' and 'Holding You, Loving You' highlight his knack for catchy melodies, while 'Yabba Dabba Doo' leans into playful funk, embodying the joyous experimentation that permeates the record. Each song brims with tight, polished arrangements, grounded by smooth basslines and Blackman's ability to switch between genres effortlessly. What makes this album so significant is its impact on future generations. While not an immediate commercial hit, it's become a goldmine for hip-hop producers, with many of its tracks being sampled by major artists, pulling it from obscurity into a cherished underground classic. In an era when funk and jazz were evolving, Blackman's debut was - and remains - an unsung yet influential piece of music history, offering a snapshot of an artist at the peak of his creative powers, melding diverse sounds with a rare sophistication.

Review: There's a reason original pressings of this fetch a few hundred bucks a time; Don Blackman's debut album is an authentic and pivotal black music record. At points understated, at others raw hip-hop, this captures both the skills of a prolific musician and exciting moment in musical history. The Parliament-meets-art-rock sleaze of "Deaf Hook Up Connection", the bonafide block party boogie of "Yabba Dabba Do", the future funk fizz of "You Ain't Hip" and the silky rare groove of "Never Miss A Thing" are just a few of the magic moments crafted and captured by Blackman right here. Review: Don Blackman's self-titled debut, released in 1982, is a jazz-funk masterpiece that has long been overlooked despite its significance in the genre. While it may not feature the familiar production of P-Funk luminaries like George Clinton, its essence resonates deeply within the Venn diagram of funk, soul and jazz-fusion, placing Blackman at the center of a unique musical nexus. Produced by Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen for GRP Records, the album stands alongside other funk classics like Fuzzy Haskins's A Whole Nother Thang and Bernie Worrell's Blacktronic Science. Tracks like 'Hearts Desire', with its captivating slap bass groove and 'Holding You, Loving You', showcasing romantic lyrics and harmonies, exemplify Blackman's artistry. His blend of aggressive jazz-funk is not only infectious but also reveals a distinctive sound that deserves recognition. This reissue of Blackman's album serves as a timely reminder of its place among the top funk records.

Review: Bob Blank is one of New York's most revered producers of all time. This compilation from Strut, is the very first retrospective on him and his work at his independent studio, Blank Tapes. This was one of NYC's most influential spots during the city's thriving art scene of the mid 70s and 80s. This exclusive compilation even includes the very first track ever recorded at the studio in addition to some hidden gems that have come straight from the studio's vaults.

Review: Originating from Hameenlinna, Finland, the DJ and producer duo Tuure Tammi and Juha Sarkkola are The Blassics. What started as a small instrumental funk project has since grown into a nine-piece instrumental band and that aims to distil the energy of their live shows into equally captivating records. Their style harks back to rough original funk 7" and draws on Afrobeat and jazz. Breaks & Juicy Takes is their new LP and one with 11 brilliantly infectious blends of broken beat, dub and nu-jazz and it's a lively, vibrant blend of hooks, basslines and melodies that will never grow old.

Review: The Blassics, an enlarged Finnish outfit who specialise in anything from soul to broken beat and electronic-minded jazz, invariably lead us to believe that there is just so much soul up in the northern hemisphere. Their label, Odd Funk Records, is one of the most consistent and reliable sources of the genre across all of Europe, and they've rarely turned in an album which has made us anything but ecstatic. In fact, this latest work, the aptly named Becoming Waves, has been playing non-stop on our local stereo for a good half day, which is something of a marvel given the quantity of music that comes through our doors. While the essence of this album is very much on the funk area, we believe that the brains and muscles driving it are made of something much more leftfield, and it very much encompasses the electronic domain. At times falling into dub, of the best lo-fi quality, we believe this to be the tip of the week, and an LP that shouldn't not go unnoticed. A marvellous and quirky journey for all.

Review: Should you stumble on an original copy of N'Draman Blintch's 1980 album Cosmic Sounds for sale, it would cost you upwards of 1,000 Pounds. This, then, is a much-needed reissue. It contains four fine cuts that showcase the Ivory Coast-born musician's distinctively intergalactic take on Afro-disco, where spacey electronics and mazy synth lines rise above bustling, high octane grooves. The album does contain one decidedly laidback and loved-up slow jam - closer "She Africa (Ton Tour Viendra)" - but it's the celebratory brilliance of the set's dancefloor workouts that most impress. Check, in particular, the anthem-like strut of title track "Cosmic Sounds" and the hot-to-trot, solo-laden Afro-disco explosion that is opener "Self Destruction".

Review: Blue Feather was a Dutch funk band, which accomplished international recognition with their hit single "Let's Funk Tonight", a strong funk track also featured on their first album entitled "Feather Funk" from 1981 on Mercury Records. The second album, "Shadows Of The Night" (originally released in 1985), leans more to the synthetic sound of dance. This is an upfront, funky and soulful album out on PTG.

Review: Blue Lab Beats have got their game down when it comes to that neo-soul-meets-hip hop sound. They first stepped onto the radar around five years ago, and since have released two albums and a string of singles showing off a refined and fully realised sound. Think smoky Rhodes, laid back lyrical flows and beats deep in the pocket. Now Blue Note have snapped up the duo, and following a couple of singles last year they're back with their third album Motherland Journey. The message is enlightened and empowered, and the music just gets deeper with every passing bar. Check the guest list too, with Major9 and Kofi Stone, Emmavie and Ghetto Boy and so many more folding into this stunning opus from a duo you'd be mad to miss.

Review: The Blue Rhythm Combo was a collective of musicians from Barbados including Bert "Panta" Brown, Clarence Thompson, Don Allamby, Jeff Grannum, Kurt Dallaway, Leroy Williams and more. They were active in the seventies and in 1972 dropped their Magumba album. It's a fiery fusion of funk, Latin and soul music that is a cult classic amongst collectors. As such, originals are hard to find and will cost upwards of 300 quid so this reissue is well timed. From the strident horns of 'BRC's Groove' to the ska-like swagger and reggae overtones of 'Mother And Child Reborn' this is a great summertime listen.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Radio Nova programmer Max Guiget steps out under his well established Blundetto guise for another masterclass in mechanical dub-funk stuff, this time to provide a soundtrack to Canal+'s series VTC. Centred on a night driver for a ride share company, Nora, and her addiction to amphetamines, the show presents the mess that has become her life in all its vivid and uncomfortable details. Debts, divorce, and a bed on the backseat of the car she uses to pick customers up.

Faced with this kind of quietly disturbing realism, and a world that exists predominantly as a nocturnal realm, Guiget's work is steeped in brooding atmospheres, but rather than simply looking to build feelings through long refrains and deep dive ambience, there's often a slow but definite, forward-motion rhythm to what's here, with tracks like 'La Chapelle' an eerie yet groovy case in point.

Review: If you know Blunt's story then you'll already know how genuinely cool, exciting and creative he is. If you don't, look it up - he didn't even start learning to playing music until his mid-30s and he regularly touted his lo-fi, wonky community-spirited fuzzy funk by busking and performing at old people's homes. A big influence on Luka Bop founder David Byrne, Dean Blunt, Dam Funk and many more, this is the first time his work has been available since his highly sought after self-released album Gentle Persuasion. Scuffed, scratched and strangely mixed down, his status as an 'outsider funk' spokesman makes complete sense when heard in all his glory. Genuinely unique.

Review: Bo!led's Broken Time album is a superb collection of lush broken beat and jazz tunes that chime perfectly with the contemporary revival of such sounds. Each tune is a luxuriant fusion of tight drumming and splashy symbols, glowing melodies and rousing grooves that work as well in headphones, on the car stereo or in the club. Some mad playing skills are on show from the band and the dynamics within each track, and across the album as a whole, are unreal. This is up there with some of the best albums of the year for our money.

Its meditations on spiritual jazz are profound as they are moving with the deft touch of band-leader Bobby Hamilton on keyboards weaving his way through subtle textures of sound. The backing band is an equally formidable force with each adding to the melting pot as it builds into a frenzy on third track "In the Mouth of the Beast".

Review: Hamilton Bohannon's debut Stop & Go, first dropped back in 1973 and is a raw and essential slice of early 70s funk. Though maybe more known for his later disco hits, here Bohannon delivers something earthier-looser grooves, soulful vocals and inventive arrangements that simmer rather than explode. This album offers a deeper, more nuanced sound compared to his polished, high-energy disco work and highlights include the blissed-out 'Singing a Song for My Mother,' the deep funk of 'Happiness,' and the widely sampled 'Save Their Souls.' A crate-digger favourite and funk connoisseur's gem, Stop & Go is a percussive, spiritual, and downright nasty record that holds up start to finish.

Review: By the time he recorded Right On Brother in 1970, soul-jazz guitarist "Boogaloo" Joe Jones was at the peak of his powers. The album's enduring appeal is based, in part at least, in its thrillingly heavy fusion of elements of jazz, funk, soul, blues and psychedelic rock. Jones is naturally in fine form throughout, laying down a mixture of jazzy licks, wild solos and crunchy riffs, but is given more than ample support from a backing ensemble including organist Charles Earland (a star in his own right), saxophonist Rusty Bryant and, perhaps most impressively of all, legendary drummer Bernard Purdie. With such talent on display, it's unsurprising that Right on Brother is still held in such high esteem.

Review: Discom continues to unearth genuine gems from the former Yugoslavia. The dusty-fingered reissue imprint's latest pick comes from 1983. It's the sole, self-titled album from Boom Selekija, a relatively short-lived eight-piece made up of funk and soul musicians from other Belgrade bands, who disbanded shortly after the LP was released. Musically, the album pairs vibrant and authentic disco-boogie instrumentation - with some Eastern European flourishes - with impassioned Serbian-language vocals. It's a quietly impressive set all told, with our picks including the spacey and loved-up stomper 'Studentski Stan', the rubbery bass guitar, rock-style guitar solos and intergalactic synth textures of 'Vladina Gitara', the subtly jazz-funk-infused, slap bass-propelled 'Juljaz Me', and the almost beat-free jazz-funk sleaze of 'Frizerka Naja'.

Bootsy Collins is one of the true fundamentals of the Parliament-Funkadelic phenomenon, and he delivered some equally essential entries into the canon as any of the George Clinton classics. This Boot Is Made For Fonk'n' beamed down to earth from the mothership in 1979, when the collective's talents were at their peak, as proven by the presence of Fred Wesley, Maceo Parker, Garry Shider and Bernie Worrell on the credits and Clinton on the mixing desk. From the slippery psychedelia of 'Under The Influence Of A Groove' to the low sung sleaze of 'Jam Fan (Hot)', this is P funk at its best.

Review: His agenda set with his 2013 debut album Bosq Y Orchestra De Madera, Whiskey Baron Bosq has gone on to unleash heavy 12s on the likes of Soul Clap, Gator Boots and Flavorhead. Now returning to Ubiquity with his second album, it's a series of street carnivals and dusky, balmy late night soirees that belie their autumnal release. Key examples of this album's arresting personality include the Afrofunk horns and relentless groove of "Bounce & Pull Up", the honeyed chants and positivity of "Take Over" and the straight up disco soul of the Nicole Willis-fronted "Bad For Me".

Review: Bosq, also known as The Whiskey Baron, returns to Ubiquity with his third studio LP for the label, an outlet that has been going strong since '93 thanks to Michael and Jody McFadin. With Bosq, the worldly and the outernational should always be expected, with Love & Resistance providing exactly those two things throughout. With this being a mother of an album, spanning eleven beautiful dance tracks from the deepest and farthest corners of the world, it's sort of difficult to boil it down to one category. However, what we can say is that if you're into classy disco and boogie vibes with a subtle Brazilian edge, then Bosq is your man! Recommended!

Review: Medellin-based American Bosq - a renowned musical fusionist with a passion for all things tropical - has been working with Benin-based Nigerian guitarist/vocalist Kaleta on and off for 12 years, with the pair delivering a series of sensational singles. No Be Today is the duo's first collaborative full length, with previous singles being joined by previously unheard cuts across two slabs of wax. As you'd expect given their previous work, much of the music joins the dots between various Afro-Latin styles and similarly vintage Black American dance music genres such as disco, funk and soul. It's an effervescent and effortlessly brilliant set all told, with highlights including pitched-down Afro-funk number 'Ose', glorious Afro-disco number 'Sonayon', Afrobeat update 'Ipade' and scorching Latin dancefloor workout 'Miselou'.
