Cleaning and maintenance are important parts of record care, whether you’re a collector with an audiophile hi-fi listening setup or a DJ looking for the best sound quality from your vinyl.
There are a few main options for keeping your records clean. The most basic are anti-static record cleaning brushes or cloths, which allow you to wipe off everyday dust. For slightly more serious cleaning of older records, a cleaning fluid is the best approach, ideally paired with a suitable cloth as part of a record cleaning kit.
Finally, the most comprehensive approach is with a record washing kit or cleaning machine, which can work with cleaning fluid or ultrasonic waves. These will allow you to restore your collection to pristine condition, improving sound quality, reducing stylus wear and eliminating unwanted pops and clicks.
Notes: The Vinyl Tonic Universal Cleaning Cloth can be used to gently remove loose dust from your favourite vinyl records. The cloth can reduce wear and tear on your records and stylus to improve sound quality. The cloth can be used dry for a quick wipe, or alternatively used with cleaning fluid for a more thorough clean.
A two ‘shot’ sample sachet of Record Restore cleaning fluid
Notes: Conveniently packaged 'two shot' measured sample of Secret Chord Analogue's Record Restore.
Sufficient for
both sides of one 12" LP, or
one side of each of two LPs, or
one side of one LP twice.
Test Tip: Try Record Restore on a favourite record that has become un-listenable by treating just one side twice.
How to use
Snip off one corner of the sachet
Squeeze the contents about the playing surface of the record and distribute evenly using the index and middle fingers together in a gentle rubbing action
Include the lead in groove and exclude the lead out groove
Set aside to dry, around 3-4 hours depending on ambient temperature and relative humidity. Once the dried film is showing white streaks it will be dry
Peeling the dried film: using standard household adhesive tape, place an 11cm strip from the lead out groove to the edge. Lift the tape overhand and slowly peel the film. Any remnants can be removed by dabbing with a fresh piece of tape.
Notes: This soft microfiber cloth lubricates the record as it cleans it. The super fine strands of microfiber material reach deeply into the grooves of the record and actually grab and lift out dust and debris.
