'Tokyo & Paris' spatters four liquid d&b tunes of various shape and size, with 'M38' opening on an anthemic note to contrast the dynamic liquid sub squirms of the A2's 'Green Eyes'. Review: It's time to take a trip back to the legendary 1980 production era of Sly & Robbie's Taxi label. By 1980-81, Taxi's stripped-down, heavyweight drum and bass sound ruled the dubplate scene at Channel 1 and while tracks like 'Heart Made of Stone' and 'Black Uhuru's' saw official releases, others like 'Warrior' and 'Rocks and Mountains' remained elusive and only surfaced decades later. 'Don't You Cry' by The Viceroys is one such raw, haunting roots track from that time with a thunderous drum and bass version also cinder. Review: This tasteful Spanish label always does a fine line in traditionally inclined deep house. Their latest drop brings together the talents of Andrew Lozano and Trevor Vichas. 'Don't U Feel It' kicks off with a playful skip in the drums and one of those spoken word vocals that add plenty of atmosphere. It's Demuir who remixes this one with even more light-hearted groove and jazzy Rhodes chords. Lozano and Vichas then offer 'With You' which keeps the dubby, smoky, frayed-edge house sounds rolling and 'Feel The Heat then brings a more upright groove with driving hits and swirling pads that speak to the soul.

Review: The Vinyl Only label is a hot one amongst heads and now it hits double figures with a cheeky new 7" packed with plenty of delicious dub. It is the work of the Vinyl Only Allstars and A-side cut 'Dub, Dub, Dub' is just that - a big bottomed sound with cavernous low ends, oodles of reverb and some well-treated vocals floating in amongst the liquid chords. 'Find A Reason' is another rich soundscape with natty guitar riffs, filtered vocals and a sunny disposition with some playful pianos.

Review: Burnski's Pilot label keeps it fresh with more sounds that operate in the middle ground between house, tech and garage. This one is a split EP that kicks off with Vitess's 'You Got Work,' fizzy, sugary cosmic cut with bouncing drums. 'Play My Game' is another trippy and astral affair with disco energy and wispy synth melodies that hit different. Robin Graham steps up on the flip with 'Not Here 2 Party' which is a low-slung tech cut with a sordid little bassline. 'Pipe Dream' gets even more abstract and minimal with sleek drums and dry drums rolling onwards.

Review: Minimal and tech house doesn't often come on 7", let alone a picture disc, so this one has got us interested and it doesn't disappoint. VNSSA is behind the tune which comes in two different versions. 'One Pill' is a chunky party starter with monstrous drums and raw bass, spooky vocal leads and a generally trippy, haunting feel that will get big reactions. 'One Pill (Reversed)' is the freaky B-side that plays the vocal backwards for even more occult madness. Wonderfully weird!

Review: Vyvyan is the solo project of Bonar Bradberry, a perennial underground perfumer with roots in disco and house and plenty of great releases to his name as half of the acclaimed Leeds duo PBR Streetgang. Here, he delivers music for dancefloors when the night turns uncanny by stripping club sounds to their raw essence. Following his 2022 debut album Y, which fused rough percussion with warped melodies, the 'Waterslide EP' pushes on further. Review: Berlin-based Sydneysider LOGIC1000 (real name Samantha Poulter) enjoyed a prolific and productive 2024, becoming something of an in-demand DJ, producer and remixer on the back of her acclaimed debut album Mother, a typically distinctive affair that pulled deep house in a variety of woozy, melodious and inventive new directions. Anna Morgan and Ehua lock in high-BPM club energy on 'Throw Dat Azz' and 'Scintille', while Turbo Sonidero's 'Kumbia ESSJ' and Sobredosis's 'No Llores Por Mi' land like final toasts to dusk before the sun vanishes entirely. The journey ends, naturally, with a continuous mix of it all.

Launched to fare an interminable journey through the many privately pressed, furtively released and/or criminally undersung jazz-funk-soul records of yore, and with an international focus, this is a rather special case of one such compilation series making it to its tenth edition, and still retaining the kind of quality control and assiduity most comp-curators may only dream of. From the opening, ultra-headsy 'Fields Of Laughter' by the chartless American band Color Me Blu, to instrumental AOR from pianist George Melvin's short-lived Quintet, you can expect to hear super-rarities here, with some originals only having heard but two acetates to their names at first press.

Review: Doctor Bird prescribe a new 2xCD anthology for the auralgics among fans of early UK reggae, bringing together for the first time on CD four pioneering albums from Creole Music Ltd, incorporated in May 1964 as chief outputter of prime British reggae. Bruce White and Tony Cousins took the helm, and Creole quickly became a key (and melodica) player in Britain's reggae scene. Their initial success came with The Hippy Boys' The Good, The Bad & The Upsetters, recorded on tour with Lee Perry; working with Trojan Records and eventually launching their own label, Rhino, Creole struck gold with Bruce Ruffin's 'Mad About You', helping clarify the UK reggae sound of the early 70s, and which comes rendered again here in clearest tones.

Review: Doctor Bird's latest deep dive into Jamaica's seemingly bottomless reggae archives takes us back to the turn-of-the-1970s and the short-lived - but undeniably successful - story of singer-turned-producer George Philips AKA Phil Pratt's Sunshot Records imprint. It's the first ever retrospective of the label's output, in part because few copies of the showcased records ever made it out of Jamaica. Reflective of the period when rocksteady was fading and roots reggae was beginning to emerge, the cuts on disc one - fronted by such legendary singers as Ken Boothe, John Holt and Horace Andy -comprise the best of the singles released by the label between 1969 and 1972. Disc two contains more singles, B-sides and rarities, alongside all ten tracks from Pat Kelly's Breezing album.
