Misty Morning
Cat: MBX 212. Rel: 09 Apr 25
Joseph Cotton & Earl Heptones - "Misty Morning" (4:00)
Room In The Sky All Stars - "Smoking Horn" (feat Eddie "Tan Tan" Thornton) (4:21)
Review: The latest from the Joe Gibbs label features a powerful roots rockers reinterpretation of The Sensations' classic rocksteady tune 'Everyday Is Like a Holiday.' The new version from Ruddy Thomas brings a different kind of energy while honouring the soulful essence of the original. It's packed with plenty of mad mixing desk effects and endless echo while warm vocals and deep basslines lock in a steady, hypnotic rhythm. On the B-side, Joe Gibbs & The Professionals deliver 'Holiday Style' which has happy horns and melodies that sparkle in the hot summer sun. Real roots authenticity and dub mastery make this another vital 7".

Earl 16 & The Disciples - "Life Is A Journey" (3:42)
Earl 16 & The Disciples - "Life Is A Journey" (dub) (3:43)
The Disciples - "Journey Dub" (3:42)
The Disciples - "Journey Dub" (mix 4) (3:41)
Review: The next Boom Shacka Lacka is yet another crucial outing for dub heads. It comes from The Disciples and features the pipes of Earl 16. It features two different tunes in two different forms starting with 'Life Is A Journey', a mid-tempo and fat-bottomed dub with pleading vocals from Earl up top next to some natty keys and horns. A hefty dub version is next up with some signature hissing hi-hats and rumbling bass. The B-side has 'Journey Dub' to sink you into a spotter mind before a different mix of it then brings more raw harmonic leads.

The People's Rights
Cat: ISS 098. Rel: 16 Oct 24
Earl Sixteen - "The People's Rights" (3:42)
Indica Dubs - "The People's Dub" (3:41)
Indica Dubs - "Upliftment For The People" (3:40)
Indica Dubs - "Dub For The People" (3:42)
Review: Inca Dubs present the next release on their fine label as they head towards release number 100 and it features the legendary vocalist Earl Sixteen. This engaging digi-dub track 'The People's Rights' is dedicated to the working class, a powerful anthem for the many, not the few - conscious music with a real message. On the flip side, you'll find the uplifting strings version which is a perfect soundtrack to some quiet contemplation or meditation. This track has been played by top sound systems like Channel One, King Earthquake, and Entebbe Sound so is an essential addition to any dub box, perfectly mastered by Russ Disciples.

Share Some Love
Cat: ISS 089. Rel: 08 Nov 23
Earl Sixteen - "Share Some Love" (3:50)
Indica Dubs & Nando - "Rebels With Dub" (3:48)
Indica Dubs & Nando - "Trod Good" (3:43)
Indica Dubs & Nando - "Dub Good" (3:44)
Review: Indica Dubs rolls out more of their steel-plated warrior anthems here with the in-house production team stepping up next to Nando for Eternal Dub. This crucial 12" opens with the title cut, which is a collab between the two that rolls on moody drums and has an enchanting melodic lead up top, snaking its way to a better future. The rework is 'Eternal Dubwise,' a more wet and bottomless affair, then Indica Dubs and Nando reunite for 'Sacred Fire' which is busier, more energetic, with broken beats and playful leads. Last of all comes the dub-wise rework that is menacing and dark for those late-night hours.

Malcolm X
Cat: JGM 7010. Rel: 18 Mar 24
Earl Sixteen - "Malcom X" (3:46)
The Mighty Two - "Malcom X" (version) (3:51)
Review: Many of you reading this may recognise this song from Dennis Brown's rendition on his iconic Visions LP, but this version actually predates that one. It was originally penned by Winston MacAnuff, also known as the Electric Dread, and features vocals by Earl Sixteen. It has previously debuted as a 7" on Gibbs' Belmont label in 1975, while Sixteen went on and recorded it again for Derrick Harriott on the Wild Flower label a year later. This rendition is often considered the definitive cut, but we shall leave you to decide on that one.

None Shall Escape The Judgement
None Shall Escape The Judgement (coloured vinyl 12")
Cat: AR 12029. Rel: 05 Sep 19
Earl Zero - "None Shall Escape The Judgement" (6:10)
Soul Syndicate - "None Shall Escape The Judgement" (version) (2:54)
Earl Zero & Soul Syndicate - "None Shall Escape The Judgement" (extended) (6:51)
Review: Earl Zero is a foundational figure in the roots reggae scene of '70s Jamaica. Working with producer Bunny Lee on this self-penned piece, it was originally given to the more established singer Johnny Clarke in 1975 and went on to become a hit. It wasn't until 1980 that Earl's own version came out on Epiphany Records and saw similar success. "None Shall Escape The Judgement" is a crucial cut that rides on a higgledy-piggledy rhythm section as bass twangs and rim shots peel off the groove. Earl's buttery, blissed out and heartfelt delivery soars up top next to celebratory trumpets to seal the deal in style.

Musical Ambassador
Cat: II 7132. Rel: 12 Aug 24
Eek A Mouse - "Musical Ambassador" (3:53)
King Kong - "Money Could A Buy" (3:34)
Review: Irie Ites is a French label that is back with two more reggae heavyweights and frequent musical sparring partners in the form of Eek-A-Mouse and King Kong. They tackle a relic of the 'Murderer/Hot Milk' rhythm, a production that will take you back to the 80s reggae sound in an instant. 'Musical Ambassador' comes first and is a happy-go-lucky sound with some slow, dubby drums and lazy hits as well as stylised vocals, while the flip from King Kong, 'Money Could A Buy' fleshes it out with more reverb and natty guitar riffs that hang in the air above the cavernous low end.

Rainbow (7")
Cat: RCK 013. Rel: 06 May 21
Robbie Ellington - "Rainbow" (4:03)
The Herb - "Rainbow" (dub) (4:07)
Review: The Robbie Ellington rhythm 'Rainbow' is taken from the long player The Herb, which was initially released in 1995. Produced by The Herb and mixed by Scruff, it is a real bit of rootsy reggae rock. The bubbling baselines keep you moving while sci-fi effects constantly take off to the skies. The vocal is airy and filled with a smooth soul, too. On the flip, Real Rock include The Herb's dub version, which is all twisted filters, drawn out pads and meon-melting vibes for smoke session and late night get downs.

Shine Your Light On Me

Shine Your Light On Me (3:04)
Cosmic Shuffling - "Merry-Go-Round" (2:53)
Review: The Liquidator Music crew have been putting out classic Jamaican rhythms ice the mid-cities and still goes strong. This is an all new one from Jamaican act Roy Ellis who sings over his backing band, Cosmic Shuffing, from Switzerland. They are acclaimed in ska and rock steady circles for good reason and help bring these tunes to life. 'Shine Your Light On Me' is an easy going roller with lo-fi drums and dusty riffs that hook you in while Ellis does his work up top. 'Merry-Go-Round' then cuts loose on a summery and swirling vibe with conversational lead trumpets and natty chords.

Emma - "Free" (3:15)
Dub Traveller & Roots Explosion - "Free Dub" (3:12)
Review: A new school roots tune from Bruges, Belgium that draws on a rich heritage of reggae and dub and adds some fresh modern twists. The vocalist Emma delivers a nice and airy, breezy vocal that floats up top over the rumbling rhythm and fine production by Dub Traveller. It's got plenty of natty chords, organic percussive textures and neat melodies and on the flipside, Dub Traveller & Roots Explosion hook up for 'Free Dub' which is a cavernous dub with lots of room for you to get lost in as you marvel at the studio desk magic unfolding around you.

Empress Ahavah - "Merkaba" (3:24)
T Gibbs - "Merkaba" (version) (3:23)
Review: Dutch label Fontoyard is back and doing what it does best early in this new year, and that is serving up fresh rhythms from some of reggae's best talents. This one is the sound of T Gibbs in collaboration with Empress Ahavah who is responsible for writing the original tune. It is a superb stepping riddim that is perfectly driven by a heavy bassline. Up top, like all the most crucial dub, is a mystical melody that captivates the imagination, and some silky smooth vocals. Flip it over and T Gibbs offers up a nice and tasteful dub that dials things back to the inviting low end.

At The Club
Cat: LR 4. Rel: 31 May 22
Victor Romero Evans - "At The Club" (5:31)
The Detonators - "Lift Off" (5:23)
Review: The John Collins vaults have been dug deep into for this new 12" on SpeciaL Request. Both of the tunes have been remastered and reissued and were written by the great overs rock maestro John Collins himself. First up is the super sweet and infectiously lumpy rolling reggae of Victor Romero Evans's 'At The Club.' It's a blissed out tune with a fat bottom and silky vocals. On the flip is the much more spaced out and cosmically minded dub, 'Lift Off,' by The Detonators. It's a heady tune that invites you in deep and is perfect for those stoner Sunday sessions.

Shine On Jamaica (3:59)
Shine On Jamaica (dub version) (3:59)
Review: Wirl was a vital outlet for reggae, disco and soul sounds back in the 70s and 80s. It put out a vast array of different artists and is behind plenty of now obscure and hard to find gems. Well right now they seem to be busy digging out some of the best and reissuing them on newly pressed 7"s. This latest one from Exodus is a heartfelt vocal plea for his homeland. It is a warm fusion of reggae and roots sounds with organic guitars, call and response vocals and seductive soul. The flip side dub strips away the vocals tome for an even more deep cut sound.

Rebel Man (part 1) (3:00)
Rebel Man (part 2) (2:30)
Review: The emotionally charged 'Rebel Man' is a powerful reggae rhythm imbued with a socially conscious message. It has a famously smooth groove and strong bassline that set a fine standard while the compelling lyrics that speak to themes of resistance and empowerment. The single comes in two parts with the first being a relatively direct sound laced with psyche out guitars and shuffling drums and the flip brings a more laidback and cavernous sounds with plenty of echo on the low end, dreamy guitar leads and lush vocal harmonies.

Review: As we continue to enjoy some warm weather here in the UK there will never be a better time to be dropping your finest reggae sounds. And this new 7" deserves a place amongst your collection with an original by King King featuring Eek a Mouse. 'Wake Up The Town' is a contemporary-sounding dub with some digital synth lines as well as nice echoing hits and dub-wise vocals. On the flip, you can find the Irie Ites All Stars seeing up the 'Wake Up The Town' (riddim) for a more paired back sound.

Echoslim X Nicko Rebel X Mr Williamz - "Higrade Skanking" (3:43)
Review: Nicko Rebel Music are back to serve up more top shelf skanking material after their debut release sold out in quick time. The EP introduces a host of debutants including Nadine Sutherland, Echoslim and Nicko Revel who sit next to the more established Mr Micah Williams, a Necessary Mayhem mainstay with skills to burn. Sutherland's "Dance Africa" is a rootsy roller with flabby bass and big trumpet lines accompanying her vocal work, which celebrates the glory of Africa, while B side "Higrade Skanking" from Echoslim X Nicko Rebel X Mr Williamz does exactly what it says on the tin.

Review: The Happy People label has been grafting hard this year on some crucial reissues. After an edit of Joy Division's most iconic and enduring hit, 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' comes this limited edition pressing of Joe Yorke & The Eastonian Singers 'Judgement Tree' backed with Eeyun Purkins's 'Drayman's Special.' The a-side is a hypnotic and exotic snake-charming dub with lay grooves and lush organ sounds. The flip is a slow, stoned and zoned out dub with plenty of head noodling effects. Super stuff.
