Review: A reissue of 2022's covers single, Alvarius B's 'Karaoke' gets a second run via Unrock. A titan of the US underground singer-songwriter scene, Alan Bishop is best known as a co-founder of Sun City Girls and owner of the labels Abduction and Sublime Frequencies. His less-known alias Alvarius B has nonetheless seen an extended panhandle of releases at least since 1994, and plays host to a string of 'characters' and sub-pseudonyms. One such 'charakter', as he calls them, is Karaoke, whose forte is covers of noir cinematic rock classics. Here we've got two dark rundowns; on the A, a dark rundown of Ennie Morricone's 'Solo Nostalgia' from the film Comandamenti per un Gangster, and on the B, a version of Indonesia's finest Koes Plus' 'Tiba-Tiba Ku Menangis', whom Bishop had already interpreted as part of the band Koes Barat. Both detail Bishop's talent as a rarely-performed alter-ego, a cosmopolite solo-entertainer.

Review: The Libertines is a rather divisive band but we are firmly in the fan camp. It's great to have the pari of Carl Barat and Pete Doherty back working together as older, wiser men, but happily their music has lost none of the urgency it had when they were drug loving youths. They defined a specific period in UK music culture back at the turn of the millennium and are now back for more with All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade, which according to frontman Pete Doherty happened "in a moment of rare peace". Lead single 'Run Run Run' has already performed well brings both lots of raw riffs, raucous energy and some of the superb songwriting they were famous for first time around.

Review: Man In Black may be the 38th album by country singer Johnny Cash, but it is definitely one of the most memorable albums in his discography. The album is perhaps one of Cash's most political albums, with the title nodding at Cash's tendency to wear only black during his live shows. This was to reflect the turbulent times during the Vietnam War; a message also reflected in the album's lyrics, from the singles 'Man in Black' to 'Singin' In Viet Nam Talkin' Blues', both of which can be seen as his most important protest songs. All this makes the album a unique milestone in his career and still a must for all Johnny Cash fans. Review: Udacha family band Zdehvedo Gob is a collective of musicians who all hail from various cities around the world. It consists of Udacha label head Alexey Kalik as well as drummer Roman Shestaev and Gamayun associates Anton Dvoenko and Stas Mitrofanov and they all got together in the studio in Moscow in summer 2023 and the results are now presented on this new album. Employing an organic music approach to instrumentation combined with subtle electronics, the group go wild for various combinations of off-kilter percussion, organ, chant and birdsong in full ceremonial swing, they trace a path through the various branches of 20th century minimalism, pan-global folk-ism's and the harmonious collective consciousness that My Life In A Bush Of Ghosts encapsulated. It's a gorgeous mix of world, jazz, spiritual percussive, experimental music that rides on nice loose and vibrant rhythms with a great mix of synthetic and organic sounds all offering plenty for the mind as well as the body to get excited about.

Review: Modern Finnish doom metal legends Reverend Bizarre only released three full-lengths during their tenure which ran for just over a decade from 1995-2007, and how they were full to the brim, often nearly exceeding the runtime of a CD. Following on from 2002's epic debut In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend (yes, that is a King Crimson reference), 2005's II: Crush The Insects boasted a more upbeat approach to their fuzzed-out, psych-tinged doomgazing machinations, with original copies of the album even bearing a sticker that referred to the trio as "The Biggest Sell-Out in True Doom". Known for having its 21 minute lead single 'Slave of Satan' cut down to 13 minutes in order to fit on the LP, this marks one of the rare instances where a band's single version exceeds the length of their album version. Coming courtesy of leading metal label Svart, this translucent red 2xLP reissue offers doomers, new and old, the chance to plumb the depths of one of the most quintessential doom acts to ever rear their sludgy head.

Review: Perhaps snatching the crown for best North of England band name since English Teacher, Bored At My Grandmas House (the singer-songwriter project of Leeds-based musician Amber Strawbridge) presents a fresh new album, Show, Don't Tell, following the titular mantra to an absolute T, across a beautifully recorded 12-track indie album that indeed poses more questions than it answers (in a great way). With its subject matters candid (earning trust, social reticence, general early-twenties angst) and its song structures bite-sized, the overarching style is Bedroom Pop with capital Bs and Ps, blowing the rest of the competition out of the bunkbed studio with its simple chorus treatments, hypnotic guitar riffs and deft instrumental contributions from bassist and producer Alex Greaves and drummer Niall Summerton.

Review: Originally formed in Birmingham in 1976, Suburban Studs were a classic case of right place, right time yet with no major mainstream success to buoy them for long. Opening for the likes of The Clash, Sex Pistols, Judas Priest, and even AC/DC during their tenure, while also recording a Peel Session, the Studs' live graft is what they're fondly most remembered for, yet their one and only full-length Slam is still packed to the brim with retrograde bangers. Releasing your punk debut in 1977, the year punk (apparently) died, may not have been the best move, but disregarding all pontifications of mysticism and fate, punks with working ears are still very glad the record exists, while those with turntables will be overjoyed to finally add this slept on gem to their collection.

It was also Television Personalities' first collection of new music on new label Overground Records following the label putting out two live albums and nine reissued singles. Now it gets repressed and served up on wax once more but with the added bonus of eleven new tracks recorded by Liam Watson at Toe Rag Studios. his marked the band's last original album with everything coming after taking the form of covers or compilations.

Review: The Roxy in Covent Garden, London, was the centre of the punk scene in 1977 and the UK Subs were one of many whose appaearances at the tony club launched them to lengthy careers. Originally recorded on New Years in 1977, this live album was originally released in 1991, showing the band - Charlie Harper on vocals, Nicky Garratt on guitar, Steve Slack on bass and Rory Lyons on drums - in their infancy. Known for their short, energy and often alcohol-driven songs, the band built a strong following for decades after, but that UK punk attitude is already very much in evidence in all its gnarly glory here.
