Review: The first release from the Axis Audiophile Series. Jeff Mills has formed an electronic jazz fusion band and this 12? is a recording of their recent performance in Kobe during the TodaysArt.JP Festival. Mills manages the decks, drums and percussion and is joined Detroit legend and Underground Resistance stalwart Gerald Mitchell (Los Hermanos/Galaxy 2 Galaxy), keyboardist Yumiko Ohno and bassist Kenji Jino. "Eventide" has the same kind of urban, uplifting soul as anything Kaidi Thatham or Mark de Clive-Lowe have made and isn't bad at all! On the flip "Happy Gamma Ray" features uplifting keys and emotive chords backed by funk bass and one of Mills' unmistakeable 909 drum machine workouts. It really seems that there's no limit to this Motor City legend's creativity which has spanned nearly 30 years and we're excited about this new chapter in the Wizard's sonic universe.

Review: Fresh from delivering two killer tweaks of rare groove classics from Headhunters and Sylvia St James, Opolopo returns to GAMM with two more magical reworks. He opens proceedings with a terrific revision of Yellowjackets' jazz-funk classic 'Matinee Idol', wisely giving plenty of airtime to the original's killer groove, punchy horns and mazy piano solos while also adding a few elements of his own (including delay-laden vocal snippets from a variety of other classic cuts). It's a terrific - and impressively tasteful - rub of a genuine stone cold classic. Arguably even more impactful is the Stockholm-based producer's flipside revision of Eddie Harris' 'La Carnival', which he turns into a sweaty, percussive, celebratory and solo-laden house-not-house epic. In a word: brilliant.

He just did some wonderful remixes and he is now working on a special album for Jimpster's Freerange featuring collaborations with Slum Village, Marc de Clive-Lowe, Mr. Scruff, Domu, Kyoto Jazz Massive and many more! Review: Insense has put together a tidy 7" featuring a rendition of Pharoah Sanders' 'Moon Child' which was first specially crafted for the compilation album Incense Music for Bed Room. It is a lush and spiritual sound led by gorgeous wind instruments and fluttery melodies over gentle and persuasive rhythms. On the flip, Yoshiharu Takeda's 'Bliss Of Landing' is another escapist sound with more of the same. A lovely 45 rpm for those quiet moments.

Review: This package of remixes of tunes from Translations is a real gem for lovers of Future Sound of London. plenty of familiar samples and textures are worked into the five Yage remixes as are cosmic overtones, sitars, drones, backward guitars and more. 'The Big Blue' is a woozy intergalactic sound on slow-mo beats, 'Requiem' is a worldly dub, 'The Lovers' has psyched-out lead riffs that bring prog energy and 'The Great Marmalade Mama In The Sky' has drunken tabla drums and mesmeric strings for a perfect retro-future comedown. 'Wooden Ship' is a spine-tingling sound with choral vocals bringing the celestial charm.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: We don't know who Your Ex is (lol) but what we do know is that they go beautifully deep here across a pair of jazz-tinged and seductive deep house delights. First up is 'Lima' which opens with swirling pads and steamy sax motifs that drift up top and mean love is in the air as the lush chords melt the soul. On the flip is 'Keep Shining' which is a more dynamic cut with a well-swung groove and the sort of rich piano chords that really hit home. Add in some crisp percussion and more mellifluous sax licks and you have a pair of timeless and truly musical house gems on a vital little 7".

Review: As fast-rising underground stars in their own right, you'd expect any collaborative album from soul-fired South London singer/songwriter/beat-maker Tom Misch and prolific jazz drummer Yussef Dayes (best known for his now long-running collaboration with Kamaal Williams) to be rather good. "What Kinda Music" is, with the pair mixing and mangling elements of soul, jazz-funk, electronica and jazz, a set that defies easy categorisation. Both musicians exceed themselves throughout, with tipsy electronics, sweeping strings, bass, effects-laden guitars, woozy synth lines and Misch's heartfelt, soul-flecked vocals offering a perfect foil for Dayes' loose-limbed, headline-grabbing drumming.

Review: The London-based CHURCH imprint is often too underappreciated and too overlooked given how much wonderful music it has put out since its first releases began to appear about 6 years ago and, most importantly, it is often overlooked in terms of diversity. Unlike popular opinion, they do not simply release house or tech for the floor and, if this new LP from debutant Yadava is anything to go by, they have mastered the art of eloquence and experimentation. It Rains Here is a beautiful LP, balancing its moody tones between trip-hop, balearic, and something not quite definable. Whatever the weather, this is a great source of good vibes, both on and off the dancefloor; it's funk music for the next decade, from the heart of London's streets. Check it and cop it! Warmly recommended.

Review: YASMIN's much loved A Scent Of Flowers album has more than stood the test of time which is why it is now being reissued for the first time. It features the 90s r&b classic 'Wanna Dance' which has long been a staple in many mixtapes and dance compilations. This edition also includes a cover of Roy Ayers' ubiquitous 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine' which was the second successful single on the album which was first released in 1993. It's back by Soulshock who is known for his work with 2Pac and Monica, and Cutfather, famous for remixing Mark Morrison's 'Return Of The Mack.' Elsewhere on the record are many more killers including covers of 'Best Of My Love' and Ray Charles' 'Let Me Take Over.'

Here he finally steps out on his own once more - albeit with assistance from a range of musicians and vocalists - with a stunning set that he describes as "an unapologetic critique, detailing the susyem and malevolent psychology that afflicts people of color". Musically, it doffs a cap to the emotive orchestration of Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, with nods to jazz-funk greats such as Bob James, spiritual jazz and the jazzy hip-hop grooves Younge has long been associated with, while the artist's own spoken word vocals are conscientious, hard-hitting and thought-provoking. Review: Adrian Younge's latest in the Something About April series is a stunning analogue opus that blends a 30-piece orchestra with breakbeats, synth work and Brazilian psychedelia. It has reportedly been years in the making and is the culmination of Younge's sonic vision as well as being his most expansive and experimental work to date. Brazilian vocalists, fuzzed-out drums and lush orchestration evoke MPB greats like Verocai and Os Mutantes and hip-hop kings Wu-Tang in equal measure. Tracks like 'Nunca Estranhos' and 'Nossas Sombras' are richly cinematic and deeply soulful standouts. More than a closing chapter, this record cements Younge's legacy as a visionary composer.
