Cat: 2052 BLACK. Rel: 15 Apr 21
BMX Beats (5:52)
Stop At The Petrol Station (2:03)
Mandarin Delight (4:27)
Beee Side Inside (4:21)
Review: Matt Lord has been working on and off with the 2000 Black crew since the early 2000s, though it's only in recent years that he's stepped out of the shadows. He first officially collaborated with Dego on a joint EP in 2018, the rather fine One Way To Another, and here the pair reunite for another jaunt through jazz-funk-influenced EP rich in rubbery bass guitar lines, jammed-out keys, and on EP standouts 'Mandarin Delight' and 'Bee Side Inside', fizzing disco synths and guitars. Yet while those two flipside cuts draw heavily on disco and boogie for inspiration, the rest of the EP revolves around broken beats, with Lord and Dego adding their jazzy and funky touches to heavy bruk-up rhythms.

One Way To The Other
Cat: 2045 BLACK. Rel: 26 Jul 18
One Way To The Other (9:36)
Oh It's You Again (2:57)
The Island (3:06)
When You Get It (2:36)
Review: UK dance legend, Dego, is back on his own 2000black imprint, stomping and storming through the place with nothing but ethereal house vibes. He's got Lord with him this time, a newcomer onto the block, and it's clear that the duo has some chemistry running real deep - "One Way To The Other" chugs along to a jazzy note, made more danceable by a heavy bassline, while the flip kicks off with "Oh It's You Again", a dusty house nugget with the sort of percussion that recalls the early 90s Detroit era; "The Island" is a continuation of that, this time dubbier and more beat-centric, and "When You Get It" further develops the groove with a gentle, melodic string of jazzed-out notes. All killer - no filler!

New Guitar New Mars
Cat: 2034 BLACK. Rel: 19 Mar 15
New Guitar New Mars (6:51)
Guitar Smash (7:07)
Death Of Hercules (6:27)
Review: Matt Lord (previously of Bugz In The Attic, Invaderz, Ladyfuzz and many more barbed soul outfits) gets busy with his debut 12" for Dego's supreme 2000 Black. A fuzzy future funk document, "New Guitar New Mars" is a broken beat serenade where crazed guitar twangs do all the crooning over a super-insistent swing. "Guitar Smash" is more of a chilled affair. Reminiscent of an Amp Fiddler instrumental, it's complete with swooning chords and a relentless (but soft) guitar twang that weaves in and out of the textures. Finally we hit the dancefloor with "Death Of Hercules", a straight up dubby disco bomb that's riddled with tight slap bass and yet more glossy guitar twangs.

Green Woods
Cat: 2042 BLACK. Rel: 07 Sep 17
Green Woods (8:50)
Can't Remember But I Know (4:27)
What Does It Take To Come In First (5:43)
Review: Since Dego and Lordamercy (AKA former Bugz In The Attic and Hoomecookin' member Matt Lord) are old pals, it's little surprise to find them joining forces for a tasty 12" on 2000 Black. They begin with the samba-soaked summer sunshine of "Green Woods", where Kaidi Tatham style jazz-funk synth lines and rich boogie bass ride a shuffling, Brazilian style groove. Speaking of boogie, the duo pay a heartfelt tribute to the early '80s style on "What Does It Take To Come In First", which is built around Herbie Hancock style keys and a righteous slap bass workout. The slightly more broken but no less "live" sounding "Can't Remember But I Know" completes a superb EP.

A Thorough Study

A Thorough Study
Put It All Out There
A Thorough Study (2000Black remix)
Review: This is the sort of back scratching we can get behind! After New Yorker Drew Lustman issued some typically nuts Dego material on his blossoming Blueberry Records label, the favour is repaid as the London legend issues this excellent 12" from the man also known as FaltyDL. Lustman's always made his love for the output of Dego McFarlane well known and his productions on A Thorough Study feel very much at home on 2000Black. The title cut could easily be a production for some underground 90s R&B cut, there's a really Teddy Riley dip to the groove here, whilst "Put It All Out There" is a typical FaltyDL polyrhythmic lick through jazzy shades that you can see Floating Points or Theo Parrish being charmed by. Man like Dego rounds out the release with a wonderfully rich and musically rewarding rework of "A Thorough Study".

Life After Subway (4:12)
The Blessings Of Salvation (4:35)
Return Of Pastor Shadrach (6:12)
Blue Signs (3:05)
Review: Starting 2020 like they mean to go on, West London's 2000 Black crew serves up an essential four-tracker created during jam sessions between regular collaborators Kaidi Tatham, Akwasi Mensah, Matt Lord and Dennis "Dego" McFarlane (Ranks). As with their previous collaborative releases, its' four tracks variously join the dots between deep house, bruk, jazz-funk and mellower flavours. As usual, the beats are tight and weighty, the musicianship exceptional (Kaidi's keys-playing being a particular highlight), the chords deep and the lead lines memorable. While all four tracks are excellent, our picks are the rubbery bruk-up bliss of "Return of Pastor Shadrach" and the sun-kissed broken house warmth of "Life After Subway".

Off The Christmas Card List
Cat: 2036 BLACK. Rel: 19 Nov 15
Off The Christmas Card List (6:47)
Hurry Whilst They Are Away (3:19)
Fila Heights (6:07)
Review: Last spotted together on the cut some three years ago with their eponymous debut LP, the crew like Kaidi Tatham, Akwasi Mensah, Matt Lord, and Dego 'Ranks' McFarlane reunite for this fresh 2000Black 12". Off the Christmas Card List is apparently a precursor to a second album from the quartet and it's the last 12" in a fine year for 2000Black that saw the killer Dego LP as the centrepiece. The A-side is dedicated to the title cut, an endlessly slinky boogie number that really showcases the collective musicality of this crew, whilst the B-side is split between "Hurry Whilst They Are Away" and "Fila High". The former is bugged out beat down West London-style, and the latter a killer Latin-flecked cut.

Cascade
Cascade (12")
Cat: 2038 BLACK. Rel: 23 Jun 16
Cascade (5:20)
The Inside Is The Outside (7:21)
The Believer (4:17)
Review: Back in 2012, the collective talents of Dego, Kaidi Tatham, Mr Mensah and Matt Lord combined for a superb album on 2000Black. Last year saw the quartet reconvene in the studio for a 12" snappily titled Off The Christmas Card List (possibly named in homage to anyone calling their music broken beat) which was mooted as a precursor to a new LP! Another taster now arrives on 2000 Black in the shape of the Cascade 12", brandishing a triplet of toasty future boogie standards primed for dancefloor deployment. The warm Rhodes, shuffling percussion and occasional twisted FX of "The Inside Is The Outside" stand out, as does the sweet soul strut of "The Believer", though there is a reason the title track hogs the A-side. That reason? It's a delight!

Two Way Here One Way Go
Cat: 2040 BLACK. Rel: 23 Feb 17
Two Way Here One Way Go (5:09)
No Facetime (Errors) (4:39)
BBQ (5:32)
Review: The latest missive from the reliable 2000 Black camp is a collaborative affair, featuring the combined talents of Kaidi Tatham, Mr Mensah, Matt Lord and Dego (this time under the Ranks alias). With such talent on show, it's unsurprising that A-side "Two Way Here One Way Go" - a rolling, club-ready fusion of Tony Allen style drums, Afro-futurist sounds and killer musical touches - is thoroughly fantastic. It's accompanied by two tasty B-sides: a pitched down, synth-heavy shuffler entitled "No Facetime (Errors)" and the starry, up-tempo, Herbie Hancock style jazz-funk-meets-Restless Soul grooves of "BBQ".

Simmering
Simmering (12")
Cat: 2041 BLACK. Rel: 13 Jul 17
Simmering (4:59)
Private Life (3:31)
Long Climb In The Sun (4:15)
Review: It would seem we're back on the Christmas card list... 2000 Black supergroup comprising the likes of Dego, Mensah and original Bugz members Lord and Tatham have been slowly ramping up their releases again and this year has seen their largest output yet. Following "Two Way Here One Way Go", "Simmering" proffers three more sublime and silky instrumentals from deeply decorated foursome. "Simmering" is a tight jazz funk jam with a sprung guitar groove spine and a blissful switch into soothing flutes midway, "Private Life" flips for a sunnyside digidub, all spacious and rippling with its breezy keys while "Climb The Sun" brings us back to the funk root note but with rising synth insistency that's bruk to the bone. Simmering now, boiling tomorrow...
