Funky Broadway (3:58)
You're My Baby (2:16)
Review: 'Funky Broadway' by The Villagers appeared on the well-received Movements Vol.12 compilation album and was a clear standout amongst standouts. As a response to that it now makes its long-awaited debut release on standalone vinyl. It's a soul-stirring gem that brings classic sounds and heart-melting grooves. On the B-side comes the red hot garage-rock gem 'You're My Baby (Don't You Forget It)' which is originally from 1966, and which coincided with Dyke & The Blazers' original recording of 'Funky Broadway' in the same year. Neat.

Review: The Voo-Dooms are back, ready to rattle bones and raise the dead with their signature trashy, Sci-fi Voodoo Caveman Garage Punk sound. Featuring garage-punk legends like Bruce Brand (Thee Headcoats, The Masonics), Dan Whaley (The Dustaphonics), Mark Braby (Vic Goddard & Subway Sect) and Mick Cocksedge (The Untamed), this lineup is a powerhouse of doom. Their latest four-track EP delivers pounding drums, fuzz-soaked guitars, rumbling bass and a dash of theremin. Expect a reworked 'Hangman Stomp' and a gnarly Electric Prunes cover. Aimed at both new listeners and seasoned collectors, the compilation features artists like the Hooterville Trolley, the Litter, the Music Machine, the Venturie "5", the Lyrics, and the Nightcrawlers. These tracks reflect the raw energy of the 60s garage scene and pay homage to the British invasion bands such as the Who, the Kinks, and the Rolling Stones. With fuzzed guitars, driving beats, and a proto-punk attitude, the music feels fresh and is gaining traction with a new generation of fans. The compilation includes standout tracks like 'Action Woman' by The Litter, 'Hang It Out To Dry' by Bud & Kathy, and 'No Silver Bird' by The Hooterville Trolley. Review: The little known folk-funk genre does what it says on the tin. Here on this third volume in a wonderful series so far, compilation curator Paul Hilery does a fine job of portraying the best obscurios in the style, salvaging the very best of such flukily serene funk music and its stylistic cognates. Classic cuts from unlikely celestials such as Tim Green and Jeff Outterman are paired with case examples of neo-psychedelia, vocal raga, soft rock, and trip-hop, at once stretching the very furthest definitional corners of the term "funk" while making for a shimmering trip. Bobbi Keith's 'Give Me Time' has to be the highlight, coming agogo with chord-soaked backings and pealing electric piano, as Keith's nearly genderless voice flits over the mix.

Review: Haruomi Hosono of Yellow Magic Orchestra infamy gets a Stones Throw "reworks-reissue" of his landmark debut solo record Hosono House, this time under the name Hosono House Revisited. Not a reissue per se but rather an exemplary case of an "interpretations" LP - in which favourite adjacent artists and contemporaries choose their favourite track from a given artist's discography, and do their best to capture their own subjective recorded responses to the song as they know it best - this version sees several musicians from the Stones Throw roster and beyond offer up their own interpretations of Hosono's songs. Leading the charge is John Carroll Kirby's 'Fuku Wa Uchi Oni Wa Soto', a mixable, much funkier and bubblegum-gobbed version of the originally kalimba-led, totally live-recorded track.

Review: The fourth studio album by English hard rockers Jethro Tull, Aqualung married a turning point in the career of the band, prepping them for a more major radio-friendly future that would see them become mainstays of the touring circuit and rank among the finest live acts of the time. It would also quickly become the group's most successful release, commercially speaking, producing two standout singles in 'Hymn 43' and 'Locomotive Breath'. With such a storied history, anyone going anywhere near Tull's masterpiece wants to tread carefully. Or throw themselves full pelt into the chaos and beauty of the record by inviting a load of stoner rock acts to do their best/worst/most imaginative on the original material and come up with something new. Magnetic Eye opted to do just that with Redux, and it hits hard.

Review: The limited edition double album Weird Scenes From The Hangout presents an exhilarating journey through psychedelic and freakbeat anthems that were the heartbeat of Liverpool's renowned mid-'80s club night, The Hangout. Released on striking Neon Pink and Transparent Curacao vinyl, this 2 x LP compilation curated by Richard Norris (The Grid, Beyond the Wizard's Sleeve) captures the vibrant essence of his club's eclectic soundscape. The album features a carefully selected roster of tracks from iconic acts like The Velvet Underground, Can, Captain Beefheart, The Seeds and The Left Banke, reflecting the diverse and energetic vibe that Norris fostered at The Hangout. This special compilation brings together floor fillers and dancefloor anthems that defined the psychedelic scene during the 1967-1982 period, meticulously licensed to recreate the magic of Norris's celebrated club nights. Review: American splatter horror director Eli Roth curates a spicy and seductive collection of Italian soundtrack gems, offering a deep dive into the rich and often scandalous world of Italian softcore and sexy comedies from the 70s and 80s. With tracks spanning disco, funk, bossa nova, and psych, Roth draws upon the compositions of iconic Italian film composers like Stelvio Cipriani, Bruno Nicolai, and Riz Ortolani. Highlights include Cipriani's infectious 'Nude Odeon (Ritmico Funk)' and Ferrio's sultry 'Quando Vuoi Con Chi Vuoi.' The collection, which also features rare and previously unreleased tracks, pulses with a heady mix of erotic tension and playful grooves. 'Amori Stellari' from Don Powell, with its cheeky synth-laden intro, adds a spacey touch, while Gianni Ferrio's 'La Musica E' effortlessly evokes the seductive atmosphere of 70s Italian cinema. Whether it's the funky disco beats of 'Avere Vent'anni (Disco)' or the dark allure of 'Il Sesso Del Diavolo,' each track feels like an invitation into an intimate, forbidden world. It's a soundtrack for lovers of cult cinema, irresistibly bold and full of character.

Review: There's so much to admire about the borderless musical inclinations of the one and only Luke Una. A longstanding standard-bearer for nocturnal eclecticism, he's made an art out of pigeon-hole dodging, via event series like Electric Chair/Elephant and Homoelectric, his Worldwide FM residency, and E Soul Cultura compilations. His latest comp sees him explore sonic transcendence, selecting a body of musical curios based on their ability to transport the listener to higher realms. As expected, the album bursts with delightful, lesser-known morsels that make it more than worthy of attention. Opening with the psychedelic guitar swells of John Martyn's masterful 'Small Hours' before meandering into the blissful meditations of Stephen Whynott's 'A Better Way', drifting into the staccato whimsy of Sylvain Kassap's 'Plancoe' and arresting with the aching soul of Michael Gregory Jackson's 'Unspoken Magic', there are too many standouts to mention. This is an album to savour from start to finish, a means of cultivating inner peace and astral escapism. When it comes to digging chops, there aren't too many who measure up to Luke, and this selection serves as a case in point.

Review: In this collection, Luke curates music with the perfect blend, inviting listeners on an esoteric journey of enlightenment through sound. Exploring late-night, after-hours musings; Everything Above The Sky (Astral Travelling with Luke Una) is a new compilation by the enigmatic DJ, promoter, and cultural curator. Following the E Soul Cultura phenomenon, this compilation comes at a pivotal moment in Luke's career as he travels the globe. Avoiding any chance of his sound being pigeonholed, Luke has assembled a tracklist that feels transcendental, stepping off the grid and back to source. Luke's Everything Above The Sky manifesto describes the music as Astral Travelling in the meadowlands with acid folk, spiritual jazz, midnight hocus pocus, cosmic psychedelic soul, magical whirling love songs, Brazilian ballads of light into machine soul gospel dreaming, Balearic bossa and Outer Space ancient African drums. Expect something different and highly unique with this listen.

Review: Countdown Records was founded by Eddie Piller, Maxine Conroy and Terry Rawlings and captured the essence of the mid-80s Mod revival and New Wave scene while pushing acts like Makin' Time, The Prisoners and The Kick towards mainstream recognition. Despite its innovative approach, the label struggled due to the collapse of Stiff Records and the corporate dominance of the era. However, the label's influence lived on through Piller's Acid Jazz label and this compilation showcases the best of Countdown's legacy with plenty of classic tracks and rarities. It's presented with a stylish Modernist design that coincides with a book that delves deeper into its history.

Review: The liberation of Mali from French rule in 1960 led to an explosive musical renaissance, and on this latest 2xLP compilation, Mr Bongo seek to remonstrate the nation's excellence in the face of much strife. After 1970, amid revived drives to document many national and regional music productions from the West African nation, Malian culture underwent a fertile transformation, with state-sponsored bands and orchestras able to record with sound engineers for the first time. Compiled by French writer and journalist Florent Mazzoleni and Mr Bongo's own David Buttle, we hear here the likes of Ousmane Kouyate & Ambassadeurs Internationaux, Rail Band, Les Messagers du Mali, Mystere Jazz de Tombouctou and many more, where bright, fuzz-packed tones whirl about our ears in serene squalls of balafon-driven funk, rumba, wassoulou, jeli and blues.

Review: The second volume of Wayfaring Strangers: Cosmic American Music delves deeper into the country rock genre that countered the rise of polished, suburban-friendly country rock like The Eagles. Featuring 20 tracks on two LPs, this collection captures the raw, independent spirit of Cosmic American Music, often overlooked in favor of more commercial successes. As country rock grew into a dominant force in the 1970s, many bands followed the Eagles' lead, softening the genre's edges. Yet, on the periphery, artists like F.J. McMahon, Mistress Mary, and Plain Jane quietly crafted their own versions of this roots-inspired music, blending gospel, country, and Southern soul. These lesser-known acts embraced Cosmic American Music's signature sounds, including pedal steel guitars and banjos, in their recordings. Big labels attempted to shape the genre's success, but Wayfaring Strangers focuses on the private press labels and forgotten gems that retained the original spirit Parsons envisioned. This compilation reconstructs the genre's history from its fringes, celebrating the raw, twangy essence of its early innovators.

Review: Calling a spade a spade and telling it like it is, the legendary Decca pans back over the archives to piece together a compilation that really takes us back to the very roots of the psyche scene and out into the glorious, technicolour, time-altering heyday of the movement. At a time when psychedelic sounds are having a big resurgence, it couldn't be better timed. This is way more than a cynical cash-in, though. Running through bands like the Small Faces, Moody Blues, Tintern Abbey and The Syn, many names here people either wouldn't associate with psyche today, or wouldn't have heard of unless they were very committed to diving into the deep annals of niche genres. Educational, and unarguably entertaining.

Review: Light in the Attic Record's Even the Forest Hums: Ukrainian Sonic Archives 1971-1996 is a landmark collection chronicling Ukraine's rich musical history, from the Soviet era to the years after the USSR's collapse. The compilation spans rare folk, rock, jazz, and electronic tracks, with music often dissenting subtly from Soviet norms. Curated by producers Matt Sullivan, David Mas, and others, it reflects five years of dedication, culminating in a significant shiftipolitics surrounding the Russian invasion led the team to focus solely on Ukrainian music. Guiding the album is Kyiv-based filmmaker and DJ Vitalii "Bard" Bardetskyi, whose liner notes provide deep insights into each track. Songs include Kobza's 1971 instrumental waltz Bunny, blending traditional Ukrainian folk with rock and jazz, and Vodohrai's Caribbean-influenced Remembrance from the late 70s. The compilation also captures Ukraine's underground scene in the 80s and 90s, when artists experimented with electronic music and post-punk. Other Highlights include Vadym Khrapachov's synth-heavy score ;Dance', Cukor Bila Smert's 1995 experimental track 'Cool, Shining', and the jungle/drum-n-bass rhythms of Marble Sleeves' 'Lion' from 1996. This collection honors Ukraine's vibrant sonic heritage, documenting the resilience and creativity of its artists during times of immense upheaval. Have a look at the attention to detail on the packaging. A true history lesson.

Review: Way back in 2004, Sanctuary Records commissioned pre-Britpop pop hipsters St Etienne member and serial compilation curator Bob Stanley to put together a collection celebrating the British 'acid folk' movement of the late 1980s and early 1970s. Long deleted, the previously CD only compilation is finally returning on vinyl - this time in expanded form, with the inclusion of additional tracks and a few picks from its (also unavailable) sequel. It's a superb set all told and one that showcases a take on folk heavy on effects, unusual rhythms, sweet vocals, horror-adjacent sounds and pastoral but otherworldly instrumentation. A few well-known names aside, it's a genuinely deep dive too - as you'd expect from someone of Stanley's knowledge and experience.

Review: A new collection that documents a micro-niche of American baroque pop with a fresh new compilation. Diversifying the selection from, but still including, the most obvious figureheads in the style - Nico, Linda Rondstadt, even The Monkees - to also focus on the fulgurant but less visible sparks in the sound, such as Appaloosa and Eternity's Children, this is a record whose focus is on both greater and lesser objects of renown. The chamber orchestral instrumentation of the sound is made palpable; quaternary strings, harpsichords, woodwinds and autoharps abound, gelling neatly with the hip connotations of the genre's late 60s efflorescence.

Review: American baroque pop, or chamber pop as it is also known, flourished from 1966 to the early seventies. It's a sound that blends string quartets, harpsichords and woodwinds to evoke a unique summer-into-autumn kind of melancholy. Far from the raw energy of early rock 'n' roll, this style often attracted musicians from folk backgrounds who were drawn to its acoustic richness. Linda Ronstadt's first band, the Stone Poneys, introduced the autoharp in 1965 while artists like Bonnie Dobson and Nico experimented with string arrangements as they sought new, post-electric directions. This era marked a shift toward intricate, orchestral textures that redefined the boundaries of pop and folk music and are explored in this superb and comprehensive collection.

Review: A new series from Jazzman featuring selections from Greasy Mike, the notoriously shady selector rising up from his dark netherworld of super rare records. After many years lurking in the underground dungeon beneath, Mike now pops the lid on his cell for an eighteen-track LP full of oddball rock & roll, garage rock and instrumental jazz, the likes of which no mere mortal can stomach at the best of times. From The Big Guys' 'Zombie' to Mysterions' 'Transylvania' to The Bluenotes' 'Rigor Mortis', you're in for a real fright on this eighth volume.

Review: The Apples in Stereo, Beulah, Circulatory System, Elf Power, The Minders, Neutral Milk Hotel, of Montreal, and The Olivia Tremor Control. The list could go on, but our point will always be the same - whatever page you turn to first, the story of Elephant 6 is one of a sorely under-referenced musical universe of multi-genre music that's hard to move beyond once you find it. The 2022 documentary is testimony to that, and now the official soundtrack, featuring many of the loose collective's finest affiliates and associates, offers us a chance to take a broad selection home. And we really do mean broad. Lo fi garage rock, weirdo guitar, surf, rock 'n' roll, grunge, alt, leftfield and plenty more can be heard in this marvellous brew. A genuine delight from start to finish, this one's essential.

Review: During the mid 1980s, years before he found fame with loved-up acid house/rave era outfit The Grid, Richard Norris ran a "psychedelic and freakbeat" club night in Liverpool called The Hangout. This fine compilation rounds up some of Norris's favourite 'floor fillers' from that night, joining the dots between the propulsive krautrock of Can, the NYC headiness of The Velvet Underground, the organ-rich Mod quirkiness of The Turtles, the high-octane psych-jangliness of The Seeds, the driving garage-rock of The Seeds, the gnarled psych-pop of Captain Beefheart, the flash-friend hedonism of Sharon Tandy's 'Hold On' and much more besides. An absolute masterclass from a man with an incredibly good record collection.

Review: Futurismo's Twisted Dream Machine: The Paisley Underground/California's Psychedelic Renaissance: 1982-1986 is the latest in their Altered Vision compilation series, celebrating California's neo-psychedelic movement of the early 80s, blending 60s psychedelia, country, garage rock, avant-garde and pop with a DIY punk ethos. It features a diverse range of bands like The Dream Syndicate, The Three O'Clock, Rain Parade, and The Bangles, all of whom capture the scene's unique sound. Though the Paisley Underground was a niche movement, its influence reached mainstream culture. This compilation aims to delight longtime fans and introduce new listeners to these landmark tracks.

Review: Twisted Dream Machine is a new compilation cataloguing the infamous Paisley, California underground psych rock scene, which lasted from roughly 1982-1986. The next instalment of their meta-series Altered Vision, Twisted Dream Machine draws on the neo-psychedelic movement that took hold in CA during this formative era, one that melded the psychedelia, country, garage rock, avant-garde and pop of the 60s with the DIY ethos of the then burgeoning punk scene. Packed full of interstitial experiments and melting-pot uncertainties - as any great compilation that homes in on a period of time, rather than a distinct style, should - we're met with mainly only lesser-spotted opuses here. The Rain Parade, The Three 'O' Clock and Green On Red are among the more consistent namechecks, but one-offs from 28th Day and Wednesday Week both equally efflux the PA with their 12/8 skips ('If Only') and anserine proto-punk confabulations ('Pages Turn'). A most notable fact is Prince's historic inspiration by the Paisley scene to name his studio complex after it, calling it Paisley Park.

Review: Earlier this year, Bear Family set out to chronicle the formative years of Germany's heavy rock sound, offering up a killer compilation showcasing tracks released between 1970 and '76. This sequel focuses on the next chapter, as German heavy rock turned to heavy metal under the influence of global powerhouses such as AC/DC and Judas Priest. It's educational and entertaining in equal measure, with the two discs showcasing such delights as the bluesy fuzz of Bullfrog's 'Live', the heavy rhythm and blues of Prinzip, the elongated Black Sabbath riffs of Epitaph's 'On The Road', the organ-powered eccentricity of Requiem's 'Steven', the early metal headiness of Breslau ('Spinn') and the all-action excellence of 'Time Machine' by Beast.

Review: In 1961, The Belairs kicked off the surf music wave with their flawless instrumental 'Mr. Moto', paving the way for a new sound. Surf music soon became a symbol of freedom and rebellion, breaking away from the stuffiness of the 1950s and thriving in sunny California. It was all about the next wave, wild parties, and, of course, loud, energetic music. One of the genre's first big hits, Dick Dale's 'Misirlou' (1962), with its sustaining guitar, exotic melodies and untamed energy helped set the trademark sound. Central to the surf sound were two key innovations developed by Leo Fender for Dale: the Fender Reverb and Showman amplifier, now essential tools for any serious surf guitarist. While many surf bands of the time only produced a couple of singles, DJ Crilleiresident DJ at Hamburg's Komet! Club and surf music specialistihas a talent for finding these hidden gems. Known for curating rare releases like the Vocal Group Madness! LP and Born To Hula series, Crille's Surfin Burt's Surfin Safari! is a perfect capture of the surf music spirit.

Hungarian outfit Budabeats proudly present Psyched Out Grooves From Hungary (1969-72), their latest compilation tracking the emergence and sure formation of psychedelic rock in Hungary. In the label's own words, "there were barely any drugs in Hungary to begin with", and we take this to be precisely the point. Psychedelia isn't a state that should rely on drugs as a crutch: no, there was something already dormant, but primed for the teasing, in the Hungarian psyche, that lent to its acquired taste for psych in the 60s and 70s. With contributions from "an undercurrent of smaller, semi-professional bands" who persisted in the shadow of a select few huge names, who dominated by dint of their sponsorship by the one, state-owned major label, this comp betrays an insider's knowledge and then some, with highlights from Non-Stop, Sampolo, Neoton, Apostol and Kex standing out as peak-quality Hungarian psych, despite none of these bands ever receiving a breakthrough. Such songs and bands were "the exception, not the norm", the "illusion of a scene".

Review: Fast rising London label Cornerman International present the first volume in a new LP compilation series, the first of which looks in on some of the best Latin cumbia to grace Peru during the genre's golden era. Corralling every bright group star from Los Tigres to Grupo Atlantic to Los Invasores, this is a sure-to-be obscurio's favourite, reflecting the diversity of styles bottleable within the otherwise rhythmic constraint that defines the cumbia sound, as it particularly proliferated across Peru during the 1960s. A convenient fusion with American psych rock elements would define the Peruvian sound, which soon became known as chicha, though other Latin American epicentres such as Colombia were also hotbeds of the style. Notably, the release revives the distinctive sound of El Volcan, a Cusco-based label that became a beacon for cumbia in the Andes and beyond.

Review: Bite-sized, and of an incalculable carat value, we're served a plate of Singaporean ear foods, with releasing label Akenaton homing in on the music scene of the 60s and 70s. Coinciding with the British invasion of ye-ye pop and beat music, which the Southeast Asian nation ate up with glee, we hear many singer-porean ladies backed by both duos and ensembles here, following up a scrumptious first edition. So recline, and let the fuzzy guitar tones and trebly songs of Li Li Wong, Lena Lim, Fung Po Po and Nancy Sit help you weather the worst of personal storms.

Review: This movie from 1997 was, at the time, hailed as one of the greatest LGBT films of its era. That has not diminished in the years since and it is still much-loved flick that rightly solidified Wong Kar-wai's reputation and earned him Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival. It's a classic that explores the sorrow of love-lost and identity struggles amidst Hong Kong's 1997 handover and the film's evocative soundtrack heightens the whole narrative. It features Caetano Veloso's 'Cucurrucucu Paloma' and Astor Piazzolla's 'Tango Apasionado' and perfectly underscores the emotional journey of lovers played by Leslie Cheung and Tony Leung, all set against the backdrop of Argentina. With handpicked live recordings, this beloved soundtrack remains a poignant complement to the film's exploration of heartbreak and self-discovery.
