Review: The Ramones are one of those bands that everyone agrees on, to some extent, before disagreeing. Such was their career trajectory. Unanimously, the first three albums - 1976's Ramones, 77's Leave Home, and Road to Ruin (1978) - were all bonafide 20th Century works of wonder. End of the Century, which landed as the decades switched over, is where views start to divide. As such this collection of their LPs from the next ten years, or so, may not immediately jump out and grab everyone.
That's a real shame, and hopefully this package, which is the first time these records have been reissued on vinyl, will go some way towards making people remember exactly how good the vast majority if their 80s output was. Pleasant Dreams, Subterranean Jungle, and Too Tough To Die are exceptional outings that are guaranteed to put you off whatever it is you're listening to from this millennium. Throw in Animal Boy, Halfway to Sanity, Brain Drain and Still More Stuff, the latter itself a retrospective of unreleased bits from this era, and we think this is a real punk winner.

Review: It's not much of a secret that the recording process for Ramones' sixth full-length, 'Pleasant Dreams', was a tumultuous time marred by creative disagreements over the album's direction as well as a direct rift between Joey and Johnny over relationship woes. Struggling to nail down a specific sonic bedrock, the material would jump and shift between hard rock leaning bangers and more pop-oriented fare, while 'The KKK Took My Baby Away' would become the standout classic of the bunch. With glossy production provided by Blah, the material would take its time to congeal and find its place in the hearts of fans. These 'Pleasant Demos' provide a rare window into the teething processes of arguably one of the punk legends most argumentative works.

Review: One of the most tumultuous projects of the Ramones' tenure, 1986's 'Animal Boy', would see the punk icons at an all-time low in terms of communication and camaraderie. Following on from the well received, 'Too Tough To Die', the internal strife would mark the least amount of input or performance from vocalist Joey Ramone and guitarist Johnny, to that point. Instead, bassist Dee Dee and drummer Richie took it upon themselves to make the best of a bad situation, leading to a sporadic collection that initially was noted for its lack of direction, or cohesion, but can now be appreciated fondly for its new wave experimentations and synth-laden cuts. With lyrical topics dissecting their own issues with one another, as well as the political point of contention between members on the standout, 'My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down (Bonzo Goes to Bitburg)', taking central aim at one Ronald Reagan, this often misunderstood ninth entry into the Ramones canon is more than deserving of reassessment.

The performance also highlights the prolific nature with which the boys were crafting new material, with several cuts from, 'Road to Ruin', being road-tested many months before their studio unveiling. It's a joyous prospect to audibly witness, 'I Just Want To Have Something To Do', 'Needles & Pins', and, 'I Wanna Be Sedated', landing on eager heads blissfully unaware of the decades spanning legacy they would find themselves intrinsically linked to, forty plus years on.

Review: Opening with Sergio Leone's theme from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, it's safe to say The Ramones still fancied themselves as rock 'n' roll cowboys when they took to the stage in Montevideo, Uruguay's capital city, where a largely unreported but longstanding punk scene continues to blossom. That little nugget of information aside, this is a live recording of one of the US' most influential guitar outfits of the late-20th Century, in their 20th year as a force to be reckoned with.
Of course, by this point The Ramones had changed from their formative years, Tommy, Dee Dee, and Richie Ramone all having handed respective batons, and instruments, to others. There's also the argument that after two decades in the game, the ferocity and vitality that originally saw them inspire an entire generation of rebellious talent had waned. Review: Originally released in 1977 (the year that punk died), 'Rocket To Russia', still stands as arguably one of the most vital punk staples to ever come out of the genre. The strength of lead single, 'Sheena Is A Punk Rocker', was enough to secure the band a deal with Sire Records, who would front a hefty sum for the budget, which was poured into production costs. Admittedly, the project didn't sell in the high regions the members had hoped, citing the influence of the Sex Pistols as a negative blanket over the scene, but the more psychedelic, surf-rock sonics may have been too much of an outlier for the time. While sporting another essential cut in the form of, 'Teenage Lobotomy', as well as the iconic rendition of, 'Surfin' Bird'; the album would mark the final endeavour of all four original Ramones before drummer Tommy would depart, whilst remaining on as producer for the acclaimed follow up the next year, 'Road To Ruin'.
