Respiration (4:23)
Review: The latest record to be added to Lil Static's catalogue is 'Respiration', a classic track by Mos Def and Talib Kweli under the duo name Black Star - and featuring an uncredited cameo verse from fellow rap stalwart Common - first released in 1998 on their self-titled album. Known for famously sampling a monologue from the hip-hop/graf documentary Style Wars in its intro, the pair exchange authentic rhymes and riffs, contemplating many ideas in the lyrics such as inner city Brooklyn life, personal philosophies, and Pan-Africanist ideas.

Review: One of Armenian-born, London-based Blade's seminal cuts from the early 90s UK rap scene, capturing the gritty realism of the time. 'Dark & Sinister', featuring MC Mell'o', delivers a powerful, hard-hitting vibe akin to LL Cool J's commanding presence, with an instrumental version on the flip side allows the track's intense atmosphere and production to shine. Often seen as the grandfather of UK rap, Blade plays off a gritty persona with a wicked sense of humour, and this release still resonates today.

Slow Me Down (feat Douniah) (1:58)
Review: Melodiesinfonie, Bluestaeb and S. Fidelity join forces to form a powerful trio, unveiling a rich nonnet of tracks destined for the universal chillout space. Taking shape in a picturesque studio in the South of France - and then completed in centres from Zurich to Berlin - the likes of '365 P', 'Summertime In '92' and 'Just Give Me The Aux' carry on the sparse and material-sonic tradition that has in recent decades inflected the neo-soul and jazz-electronica worlds. Every track here sounds to have been made with what sounds to the most apparently humble means available; rimshot clicks, wooden hits, impassioned hums and coos, Rhodes chords here and there. Loyal to one rule and one rule only - "we need to stay in the room together to make this a record that feels exciting to us" - the result is an evenhanded five-track flirtation with soul-bearing passion, toeing the hobline of cool and hot.

Review: The dream team Dogger & Mindstate return to TNQ wax with this hearty package of soulful, hip-hop-influenced D&B flavours that was originally unleashed digitally last summer. Representing both their pathways into this music, from north to south, the duo recruit the likes of London's Verbz and Manchester's Sleazy F Baby to vocal and narrate their delicate, subtle but ultimately heavyweight rhythms. From the deep jazz of 'Different Roads' to the symphonic dynamics of 'From The Concrete', this is one of the hardest hitting and emotional records Dogger and Mindstate have made so far.

Live At The Barbeque (4:36)
Review: Mr Bongo has been shining a light on the work of Main Source (aka Queens native Large Professor and Toronto's Sir Scratch and K-Cut) for a while now. Their latest reissue - after plenty of other 7"s last year- is Just Hangin' Out, which is an ode to the simple pleasures of relaxing with friends. The a-side is made from two huge samples (Vanessa Kendrick's '90% of Me is You' and Sister Nancy's 'Bam Bam' ) to make for a stone cold and swooning groove. On the flip, 'Live at the Barbecue' is often said to be one of the finest posse cuts of all time.

Review: Mr Bongo continue to shine a light on classic hip-hop with their excellent curated reissue series. They have two Main Source 45s in their sights and this is the second. When it first came out on Actual Records, it soon sold out and became a much sought after piece with copies going for high prices on the second hand market. And for good reason - the band really hinted at the greatness they would go on to achieve with an impeccable three minute rap single making a massive mark. 'Think' is a superb example of how to take well known samples and flip them into something fresh.

Review: Mantronix declared themselves 'King of The Beats' back in 1988 and managed to live up to the title across a fine career. The tune is of course widely credited with being the first track to ever sample the amen break so many art forms owe it a real debt of gratitude. Its blend of old school hip-hop, electro and club music is topped off with rapper MC Tee in fine form. This reissue on Lil Static comes in limited quantities and is backed with 'Get Stupid Fresh' (part 1), another classic joint from back in the day.

Hot Winter (Dreaming About Being Closer) (3:46)
Review: James Massiah is already regarded by those in the know as one of London's most vital poetic voices and this potent two-tracker only serves to add weight to that reputation. It pairs lo-slung, richly textured beats with razor-sharp lyricism from the off with 'Holland Park,' produced by Shimz343, finding Massiah narrating a cryptic tale over lush strings and jagged rhythms that channel the great Gil Scott-Heron. On the flip, 'Hot Winter' drips with jazz poetry swagger, chopped flutes and dusty breaks with Massiah riding the beat with effortless fluidity. He proves himself a timeless narrator here, half street prophet, half storyteller, but a stylish, witty bridge between past and present with lyrical gravitas.

Review: A classic New York hip-hop sound with refined lyricism and sleek production. Side-1 features 'Below The Clouds (feat. Talib Kweli - remix)', a standout reimagining from Masta Ace's newest album out this year. The track blends introspective verses with a soulful beat and Kweli's contribution elevates it further, creating a thought-provoking yet head-nodding experience. On Side-2, 'Get Shot (remix)', originally from Masta Ace's 2018 album, gets a polished rework. The remix offers a smooth, groove-filled reinterpretation that complements Ace's storytelling strength while keeping the vibe laid-back yet engaging.

Nice Town (Metronomy remix) (3:01)
Nice Town (Alain Ogue remix) (4:12)
Review: Metronomy mark their signing to Ninja Tune with a new single that comes not long after their Posse EP Volume 1, a collection of tunes all made in collaboration with up-and-coming artists like Biig Piig, Spill Tab, Sorry, Brian Nasty and Folly Group. This one is another collaboration, this time with Pam Amsterdam. 'Nice Town' deals with the lead singer's own battles such as "internal versus the external or, intangible versus the tangible." It is a delightfully snappy dance-pop ditty with great and tight synth sequences, old-school rap vocals and nice broken early electro beats. Metronomy and Alain Ogue add their own remixes to a great label debut.

Sugar Free (vocal) (4:38)
Sugar Free (dub) (4:42)
Review: Descendant, minor key seduction-funk from Miracle Thomas, whose sucrose and fructose levels are indeed incredibly low. A-sider 'Sugar Free' is a remake of Jarry Barnes and Katreese Barnes' brother-sister duet of the same name, which they made under the name Juicy, in turn a "response record" to Mtume's 1985 hit 'Juicy Fruit'. Miracle's miraculous new version brings the original 1985 number a heck of a long way, effectively conveying the newfound, cold-turkey loneliness felt during the day, presumably post-breakup. The dub on the B is a rare disco-funk-dub version too, perfect for those DJs preferring to segue into the more cosmic outer reaches of things.

Review: Miracle Thomas and Rob Hardt bring new life to 'Sugar Free,' the 1985 hit by Juicy, just in time for the arrival of spring. The funky bassline and smooth vocal runs make this cover instantly catchy and memorable. Miracle's sultry delivery, paired with Rob's groove-heavy production, creates an irresistible blend of old-school soul with a fresh twist. The song's infectious chant and hook elevate it to a dancefloor favourite, while the chemistry between Thomas and Hardt is undeniable. This track will no doubt soar on the charts, earning its place on playlists and keeping listeners hooked for months. It's the perfect mix of nostalgia and contemporary soul.

HH (3:52)
Review: When it comes to crafting party-starting joints featuring classic hip-hop and R&B vocals, few producers can match the output of Gallic rework fiend Jerome Potin AKA Moar. He's in prime form on this ultra-limited "45" too. A-side 'H' crafts a rolling, 4/4 hip-hop tempo beats out of some classic disco licks and then adds Ol' Dirty Bastard and Kelis' vocals from one of the biggest hip-hop hits of 1999. It's a simple idea, brilliantly executed. Flipside 'HH' is equally as funky and accessible, with cut-up edit effects, rubbery slap-bass sounds, jangling acoustic guitar chords, warming synths and the lead vocal from a much-loved R&B jam. Tons of fun!

Bitch Ass Nigga (4:06)
Review: The iconic duo of Havoc and Prodigy, better known as Mobb Deep, almost single (or doubled) handedly became the primary progenitive force in hardcore east-coast hip-hop in the early nineties. Their 1993 debut LP Juvenile Hell would, at the time, be a commercial failure eventually leading to their being dropped by their label, but the material has only grown exponentially in terms of both influence and relevance. This fresh 7" takes the album's lead single 'Peer Pressure', and switches the B-side from the original 92 pressings' LP closer 'Flavor for the Non Believes' out for the endlessly iconic banger 'Bitch Ass Nigga'. If you need your audio fidelity east-coast fix in a hurry and don't have the time to commit to a full spin of the LP, then this single has you covered.

Review: Under-the-radar hip-hop issuers Modern Classics snaffle up Kendrick Lamar's bodying 2024 diss track to Drake, 'Not Like Us', pressing it to bootleg record only six months after its release. In one of the most compelling yet travestied hip-hop beefs of the 2020s - where it seems only the most high-profile heirs apparent to the crown of "greatest of all time" may indulge beefs at all, and in which the format's verbal blows have grown increasingly low -'Not Like Us' premiered only less than 20 hours after Lamar dropped 'Meet The Grahams', which had already taken aim at Drake's family history. With stringy hyphy flavours, portentous lyrical KOs, and an opening Sixth Sense reference (ahem, "I see dead people"), Lamar temporarily goes from crown-bearer to pallbearer here; it is said that Drake may never come back from this one, amid the many serious allegations levelled at him in the song.

Bill's Valence Street Jam (4:01)
Review: Yuki Kanesaka returns with a delicious uptempo remix-cover of Herbie Hancock's thoroughgoing jazz patent, 'Watermelon Man'. In respectful contrast to Hancock's original piece, Kanesaka deploys a to-the-letter rendition of the original's opening Hindewhu whistle hoot - also heard on the mashup B-side - and keeps up Hancock's intended 'mathematical balance' with a nonetheless meatier, dance-ready EQ balance. Legend has it that this was Hancock's first ever song to be composed with commercial success in mind; we're not surprised at its continued proliferation, appreciation and reproduction across the globe - and now in Japan, no less.

Released on limited edition purple vinyl, this 7" captures the essence of early 90s rap, with a catchy beat and a memorable guitar riff that echoes the East Coast's golden era. Side-1 features 'Move It Or Lose It' (feat. Mathien), a smooth blend of funk and rhythm and blues, all wrapped up in a b-boy/fly girl flavour that feels effortlessly cool. The track's excellent rap flow and infectious melody make it an instant favourite. Review: Deep house doesn't often get served up on 7" but that doesn't stop Pond Recordings who do just that here. Mura Masa is behind the two really quite different cuts and shows a real variety of skills. 'Rise' is a dusty house gem with warmth and soul and a great vocal sample. On the reverse is a physical workout that mixes prickly beats, chopped-up vocals and wiry synths into something usually and alluring. Two very different sides then but both equally effective in their own right.

Review: Japanese heavyweights HHV continue their ongoing trawl through the back catalogue of long-serving hip-hop producer, DJ, record collector and self-styled King of Diggin', Muro. Here they present the second part of the dusty-fingered hero's turn-of-the-millennium Pan Rhythm series of 12" singles, this time presenting it on a tidy seven inch single. 'Hip-Hop Band' is a weighty, floor friendly, horn-heavy re-make of the Stetsasonic song of the same name, with local mic man Boo delivering tweaked versions of the U.S crew's verses in his native Japanese. While jazzy, the bombastic backing track - which can be heard in full on the flipside instrumental version - is forthright and club-ready, making the single a must-have for working hip-hop DJs and those who love the more up-tempo end of the rap spectrum.

Previously spotted last year on Three Six Zero alongside Felix Da Housecat, now NEZ throws down three varied cuts that show he's one to keep tabs on. First up comes 'You Wanna?', a pumped up peak time house cut with our man upfront inciting the dancefloor to come alive. Review: The Street Knowledge "45 series" appears to have been set up to educate heads on original 1990s hip-hop jams, or at the very least deliver fresh pressings of some seriously classic cuts. This inaugural release begins with Warren G and Nate Dogg's 1994 heater "Regulate", a deep and seductive number that makes great use of samples from Michael McDonald's teary blue-eyed soul classic "I Keep Forgetting". Flip to the B-side and you'll find Luniz 1995 hit "I Got 5 On It", a cut that's been bitten, reworked and re-made umpteen times in the 24 years that have passed since it was first released. As this reissue proves, the Oakland duo's original version is still streets ahead of the rest.

Review: Masta Ace and Marco Polo team up once more for their highly anticipated follow-up to the esteemed Breukelen Story. Just like the last album, Richmond Hill grips the listener by the hand and ear, whisking them away, through the semiotic-auditory memory lane, and doubling up as Ace's hometown and childhood experience. Providing a fresh retrospective take on the cream-of-the-crop hip-hop mastermind's earliest days, it's a far cry from the rapper's early 90s style, but still nonetheless channels the same penchant for instantly nostalgic sample-heavy production motifs and includes many guest appearances from contemporaneous greats such as Inspectah Deck, Coast Contra, Blu and Che Noir.
