Review: Five years on from their debut collaborative EP 'Frisina Meets Toco', modern Brasilian dance artists Gerardo Frisina and Toco return for a second faceoff, this time with liaising artist Luzia Dvorek serving as ringmaster. Centring on samba-infused jazz and deep house with mystical and folk influences, "deixa passar" translates from Portuguese to "let it pass", though the mood is certainly not outright passive. This delectably quartered slice of carnivalesque dance music is rather rich in sonic papaya juice, charting sustained vocal contrasts between Toco and Luzia against smoky and furnaced beats. Aperient track 'Deixa Passar' leans heaviest on languid piano, whilst dozier mists emerge on the B-side in the form of 'Ile' and its rework by Gerardo Frisina, bringing pan flutes, strings, breathy vocal counterpoints, cabasa shaker, and subtle bass undercurrents.

Review: Last time we heard from Cleon and Jazzy Pidjay, otherwise known as Last Bongo In Paris, was back in 2013 on EDR...and here they are back on the same label, and out the bottom of a hat. Similarly to last time, "Bahia Swing" manages to conjure the right balance between jazz, funk and something a little more tropical, a sound and panache that is carried through to the following four cuts of juice. Our favourites are "Ritmo Loco" for its Latin energy, and the delightfully broken "Jarumba". If you're looking for something a little jazzy and saucy, but that pushes beyond the genre's natural confinements, this is it.

Review: Dynamite Cuts have pulled out another classic from the Afro-jazz canon here. It's one of the many gems from the catalogue of The Last Poets and was sampled by some big hip-hop artists back in the day including The Jungle Brothers. The original track is some ten minutes long but here it has been edited down to a short and sharp for minutes for an exclusive 7" pressing. Review: Several years before Uzi Kinrot, we were lucky enough to attend a cultural exchange, of sorts, between Lithuania's burgeoning electronic scene and Israel's fertile alternative music community. The results were staggering, and in addition to presenting the Balkan state as an epicentre of leftfield dance, it also made a strong case for the Middle East as a hotbed for the kind of music makers destined to score some Quentin Tarantino or David Lynch movie. Back up to date, and Les Dynamites, whose reputation has long reached beyond their Jerusalem hometown, have returned to emphasise the latter point. Uzi Kinrot is a groove-packed double-A side that feels alive with energy, perhaps thanks to the single-take recording process. It's twangy, psychedelic, nostalgic and yet utterly timeless stuff that yearns to be heard on a beach while you hide from the heat of afternoon sun.

Review: You could easily think this was a dusty reissue of a long-lost Afro classic. But no, it is not. Instead, it is new music from Loboko, a new group created from the rich musical melting pot that is New York City featuring young Congolese vocalist and guitar talent, Yohni Djungu Sungu, plus Soukouss-Stars associate and top bassist Ngouma Lokito. This is their debut recording and surely the first of many that will be built of jam sessions. It is traditional Congolese music with a modern twist but plenty of guitar-driven sounds from African soukous with Caribbean inspirations, Loboko's unique take on the ethnic Baluba rhythm, and elements drawn from the seben style. Utterly intoxicating.

Review: Los Disco Duro are all about offering up "analogue synthesizer interpretations of Latin classics" and have been doing so now for almost a decade, most often on the Disco Bas label in the US. Their reworks and reimaginations know no stylistic bounds as price here with an intergalactic-sounding take on kiddie-disco fav 'Macarena.' The vocals are reusing through a talk box, the vamping chords and drums are fat the synths pixelated. Review: Continuing their mission to retrouve genres across the spectrums of Latin funk and cumbia, Original Gravity welcome back founding favourites Luchito and Nestor Alvarez with yet another sonic vitamin D pill, presaging the warmer days to soon come. Both sides tap into that rich 60s and 70s Afro-Carib crossover sound, with, at least on the face of it, no studio trickery in earshot (though careful listens reveal the method behind the majesty). Review: We're excited by this fresh repress from the fine folks at PVine because it brings back to life an iconic cut from the widely beloved Hawaiian AOR album Lui. This classic gentle sound is also known for its stunning artwork and has long been a fav of collectors and diggers. Review: Nu-tone introduces the debut single from Lulada Club here - a superb New York City based all-women salsa orchestra headed up by band co-leader Andrea Chavarro. After two years of live performances, they're finally sharing their music for everyone to dance to and dance you will to these most intoxicating mixes of funk, cumbria, salsa and more. It was recorded live and all-analog at NY Hed Studio by producer Rocio Verta-Wray, and the single comes on random-colour vinyl. Lulada Club emerged in 2022 to fill the gap for women ensembles in NYC's live music scene and co-leader Katherine Ocampo has said their aim is to "provide access to live music, culture, community, and representation for women in music festivals and other spaces."

Review: Belgian-Bolivian musician Susobrino delivers his debut EP 'NO', titling itself after a primal negation, and forged in the interplay of traditional South American percussion music with electronica. As if to curb his habit of collecting an (perhaps over-) abundance of percussion instruments, 'NO' hears Susobrino set a stark limit for both himself and the listener, bringing just three curt tracks to wax following a live-changing tour of his ancestral South America. Honorific of the traditions of SA percussive music, Susobrino nonetheless intones: "Mixing acoustic instruments and field recordings with electronics with the music software Ableton was my cocktail from the beginning". The result is a widescreen demo of ascendant percy jawns, equally suited for the curio club-goer as it is for the Bolivian folklorico fanatic.

Review: Two silky sides of Brazilian disco soul on Mr Bongo's perennial Brazil 45s series. First up, long-haired lothario samba fusionista Marcos teams up with Leon Ware for a pristine polished piece of early 80s disco funk. Golden harmonies, staccato vocals and a super juicy bassline; it's not hard to see why it was his best selling single. Flip for the equally smooth "Alleluia" from Brazilian boogie gospelist; this one is all about the percussion heavy breakdown. Proper sunshine block party business.

Review: 18 months after a fantastic launch instalment courtesy of the mighty Danny Krivit, Mr Bongo's Edits series returns. This time round, it's Manchester legend and 'E Soul Cultura' specialist Luke Una at the controls. On the A-side he handles 'Love Games', an obscure slice of mid-80s South African disco by Thandi Zulu and The Young Five, cannily focusing on the warm, gently funky groove and the track's spacey synth solos. Over on the flip, the Electric Chair co-founder takes on Lionel Pillay's percussion, synth-and-organ classic 'Plum', stretching out the most dancefloor friendly sections before unleashing waves of solos and the original's saucer-eyed, sun-splashed instrumentation.

Review: The late, great Jose Padilla was a big fan of the work of Stan Getz, whose easy-going, sun-soaked and accessible take on jazz - and especially his more Latin-tinged offerings - appeared frequently in the Balearic legend's DJ sets. Jazz Samba Encore, the saxophonist's 1963 collaboration with Brazilian jazz guitarist Luiz Bonfa, remains one of the most unashamedly joyous sets in his catalogue. Reissued here in a Japanese edition, it sees Getz and Bonfa trading solos over luscious bossa-nova and samba grooves. Review: The third album from Levon Eskenian's remarkable ensemble is its most adventurous to date. As well as reclaiming the music of esoteric teacher G. I. Gurdjieff for folk instrumentation, Zartir situates Gurdjieff in a tradition of Armenian bards and troubadours including Ashugh Jivani, Baghdasar Tbir and the legendary Sayat-Nova. In parallel, an emphasis on pieces for sacred dance reaches its apex in The Great Prayer, an entrancing collaboration between the Gurdjieff Ensemble and the National Chamber Choir of Armenia, which draws upon ritual music of multiple faiths. Arranger Eskenian says, "I believe The Great Prayer is more than a mere 'composition'. It is one of the most profound and transformative pieces I have encountered in Gurdjieff's work." Zartir was recorded in Yerevan in 2021 and mixed and completed in Munich in November 2022 by Levon Eskenian, Tigran Kuzikyan, and Manfred Eicher.

Review: Popularly known to fans as "Ice" - a rare case of hypocorism in colloquial fan band nicknaming - Strut Recordings document a rare record from the vaults of the luminary Lafayette Afro-Rock Band, one that is arguably the closest in their catalogue to the signature sound defining their earlier work. Marked by an especially complex funk rhythmology, this record was pressed contemporaneously with the infamous Soul Makossa and Malik sessions; but compared to their earlier works, Afro Agban pushes deeper into jazz-rock territory. 'Ozan Koukle' has espceially become a known but coveted missing link for turntable taxonomists, who'll thank their lucky stars for the fact that it is now available in full.

Review: Insane boogie fire from Rio circa 82; both Robson Jorge and Lincoln Olivetti were already decorated before they joined forces, but this one took both of their reputations and amplified them beyond expectation. Their one and only album, it's loaded with soul and funk from every corner of Brazil's sexy city and brought together with beautiful attention to detail; the gradual vocal breakdowns, rude synths and lavish instrumental sections, key cuts such as the Wonder-level "Aleluia", the jazz slides and glides of "Pret-A-Porter" and the sexy 80s electro boogie "Squash" will still completely flip any party 35 years later. Review: LA Lom's March 2024 show at Chicago's Thalia Hall debuts on vinyl for Record Store Day 2025 a year or so after the band's defining live moment. Just months after packing the Empty Bottle, the band returned to an even larger crowd, which served as proof of their ever-growing Chicago fanbase. Determined to keep the raw energy of their LA roots alive, they built a bright red round stage in the centre of the hall and were surrounded by fans dancing and singing from every side. Review: Strut proudly presents the first official remastered reissue of Lafayette Afro Rock Band's funk/Afro classic, Soul Makossa from 1973. Originally known as the Bobby Boyd Congress, the seven-member Afro-American ensemble relocated from the U.S. to France in 1971. After lead singer Bobby Boyd returned to the US, the group rebranded as Ice and collaborated with producer Pierre Jaubert, whose credits included work with Charles Mingus and John Lee Hooker. Inspired by Motown's work ethic, Jaubert initiated daily rehearsals, leading to the band's unique sound. Immersed in Paris's African-dominated Barbesse district and frequently performing with Cameroonian composer Manu Dibango, the group evolved into Lafayette Afro Rock Band, embracing a heavier, more intricate Afro-funk style. Their debut album, Soul Makossa, featured a dynamic rendition of Dibango's classic, alongside the intense break of 'Hihache' and the infectious 'Nicky.' Review: Mexican singer-songwriter Natalia Lafourcade shared her tenth album De Todas Las Flores in 2022, drawing influence from a variety of folk and Latin jazz genres including bolero, cumbia, bossa nova, samba and son jarocho. Her first project of completely original material in seven years, since her fifth studio record Hasta La Raiz, the album was produced by French-Mexican musician Adan Jodorowsky, Lafourcade's former neighbour and multi-talent in his own right. A rare case of a "musical diary" among Lafourcade's catalogue, the album was a bittersweet, romantic jaunt from the get-go, dealing in themes of grief both thematically and formally: it was recorded entirely on analog tape in an El Paso exurb, not far, yet still a comforting ways away, from her home municipality of Veracruz, Mexico.

Review: Mati Zundel aka. Lagartijeando has been releasing cumbia-esque, Andean influenced dance music since 2010, though it's only in more recent years that the artist has rerouted his craft to LPs, of which this latest record is the fourth. With "camino" translating from Spanish to mean "path" or "way" - the word often carries a spiritual meaning - Zundel here aims to emphasise the many sprouting, vicissitudinous paths down which life may thrust us, despite the ever-present illusion of choice. After moving to Chula, Mexico, the artist drew inspiration from the landscapes and cultures of the northern tip of Latin America, reflecting local intrigues and mountainous mysteries. Armed with regional instruments, such as Andean winds and charango, Lagartijeando produces such danceable dazzlements as 'Cholula' and 'Que Lindo Sale La Luna', which stand out as the most heated songs here, their stylistic range offering a sense of the many choices that remain open to us.

Element sou US hippie culture as well as love song stylings, angular funk and piano ballads all feature with plenty of great musicianship and rousing lyrics. Truly escapist stuff.

Review: Puerto Rican salsa singer Hector Lavoe first released La Voz in 1977 via Fania Records, a specialist imprint formed by execs Johnny Pacheco and Jerry Masucci in 1964, homing in on salsa, boogaloo and latin jazz. Now reissued via Concord, the eight-track, heavy-set salsa album is a slice of Lavoe's life back in the 70s, encapsulating his jolly nature, not least born in part from his crediting for helping pioneer the genre in its early heyday. Listeners will also note the inclusion of 'Mi Gente' in the GTA: Vice City Stories soundtrack, but we've no doubt that, on stumbling on the album here on Juno, they'll appreciate every track here regardless of that chance context.
