Review: Functional house experts Toolroom are back with Toolroom Sampler Vol 11 which is again packed with maximal club cuts for big dancefloors. Martin Ikin's 'Make U Sweat' is indeed sweet tech that never stops pumping under libidinous vocals. Flashmob's 'My Body' is loopy and manic tech with peak time intent and Nathan Barato and Matheo Velez offer up the macho grooves of 'Weapon.' Last of all, Jenn Getz & Alfie offer another slight tweak on try Toorloom sound with the grey and gritty white knuckle beats of 'Vibration.' A great EP for working DJs looking for instant impact.

I Like It Like That (Michael Gray remix) (6:41)
I Like It Like That (Michael Gray dub) (5:05)
Review: Toolroom's Fool's Paradise offshoot has done a good job in offering up fresh, disco-inspired material, but it also acts as an outlet for key crew member Michael Gray's 21st century reworks of classic disco cuts. On this 12", the long-serving Essex producer puts his slant on Inner Life's boogie-era gem 'I Like It Like That', a 1982 Salsoul single fronted by a then young Jocelyn Brown and produced by Leroy Burgess and Patrick Adams associate Stan Lucas. Gray begins with a lightly housed-up - but suitably reverential - full vocal remix, ensuring plenty of space for the studio band's squiggly synths, bold pianos and dextrous bass guitar. Arguably even better is the B-side 'Dub', which alternates between heavy groove sections, extended breakdowns and effects-laden showcases of Inner Life's piano, bass and synths.

The record includes six dynamic tracks that have already been tested by label head Nastia, such as Namhar's powerful track 'Run Baby Run,' and JNKS with the debut track 'Refill.' New faces include Italian producer Fabrizio Di Santis with '90128,' Croatian techno sensation Insolate with 'Go With U,' and Ukrainian talent Kichi Kazuko with 'Serpents.' Jay York rounds out the compilation with 'Go Back,' which marks his entry into the minimal techno scene with aplomb.

Review: J Axel and Eva Essa find magical harmony on this new collaboration on the Do It Now Recordings Vinylized label. 'Turned Your Back' is a perfectly heart-melting, life-affirming bit of soul-drenched and intimate deep house with gorgeous vocals and super smooth drums all healing you to your core as the gentle rhythms wash over you time and time again. It's a faultless original but one that is also ripe for remixing and who better than Atjazz who slightly ups the tempo but keeps the deep, wavy rhythmic vibes and adds a little cosmic magic in the synths. A sublime package indeed.

Review: More magic from Majik as he looks back to his evergreen 2019 opus which saw him take things right back to his Reinforced foundations. The title track is an ice cold slab of futurism that essential provides the blueprint for jungle's most dynamic aesthetics. 'Eclipse' meanwhile goes for the heart strings, rips them out and turns them into an orchestral string section as a huge score-level sample is laid gently over surging, urgent break. Abracadabra.

Review: OG business! Majik and his label Infrared have been charming the dance since the very roots and he's back once again with this superb trio that originally ran last autumn. Fresh to wax, 'Ghost Train' charges along with real old school hardcore vibes, especially with those booming detuned synths. Things get deeper as we skip further into the EP; 'Above The Clouds' is goes all icy and introspective while 'July' closes with a nod to Detroit. Powerful.

Review: The late great Whitney Houston has many hits in her back catalogue and plenty of them are ripe and ready for club-ready reworks. J& E Project do just that here by reworking her belting diva classic 'So Emotional'. First off they extend it with more drums for the dance floor, some 90s piano house chords layered in and splashy cymbals to make it all the more immediate. The vocal remains iconic and is sure to be sung back whenever this one gets played. A radio edit and instrumental also feature on this flashy pink vinyl.

Review: Jooice, yet another sublabel of London-based proggy dance and electro label Lirica Archives, drop a swell new dark acid trance release collectively smithed by five sound-stokers: J6, Christian Sarde, Aline Umber, Krol and Otis. Each titans in their respective scenes (between which there is much crossover on this release), the overarching mood is one of renegade sci-fi escapism and revolution, with glitching, quivering robo-vocals and technic, sciencey sound-tunnellings aplenty.

And here we have the grand arrival of another, Follow Your Mind, which offers up some nice cerebral styles from Samuel Jabba. 'Memorias Del Futuro' is raw and direct with frazzled pads and snappy drums, 'Retrospection' (Inferno mix) has a throwback sci-fi vibe with visceral synths firing across the linear drums and 'Lost In Space brings that nice sci-fi edge. Last of all is 'Vision Of U' with its silky arps and snappy drums all topped with some cool vocoder vocals.

Review: Released only a year on from Jacidorex's Unfaced, an acid techno tumbler of big proportions, now comes a new V/A sourced from many a peer in the upstart Belgian artist's orbit. First, we've the collaborative 'Midnight Express', a cleanly tenebrous slink through twinkling, bubbling, upstream synths and hypotense builds, before the hardcore-informed 'Krazchen' by Acidus serves to harrow dancefloors worldwide with evil banana slip synths and cavernous kicks. A melodic turn is marked thereafter on the call-to-dance 'Into The Floor' by Ansbro, while Mahtal 'All In This' continues this trend into hardstyle techno, with its especially clever use of pitched-up and resampled kicks.

It came in the late 1980s and saw the King of Pop at the very height of his powers, mesmerising crowds with his iconic dance moves and impressing them just as much with his vocal performances. In 1987 he headed to Japan and played live in Yokohama one magical night which was recorded on tape forever. One of the tracks he played was the title cut from his Off The Wall album and now it's pressed up to blue 12" as three different Paso Doble mixes.

We Got To Hit It Off (Opolopo Deeper mix) (7:43)
Review: Millie Jackson emerged from the Deep South before properly coming of age in the grit of Newark, New York, but her voice always sounded like it was made for the spotlight i bold, sharp, and unfiltered. Across the 70s, she carved out a singular space in soul and funk with her fearless delivery and barbed wit, speaking plainly about lust, betrayal and resilience long before it was fashionable to do so. Her run on Spring Records placed her alongside The Fatback Band and Joe Simon, where she balanced tender ballads with club-ready burners, always laced with her signature no-nonsense bite. 'We Got To Hit It Off', first released in 1979, sits squarely in that lineage i a disco-soul gem with just enough snap to make it timeless. Spring Revisited brings Jackson's original into sharp new focus: Dimitri From Paris uses the original session tapes to craft a mix full of glitz and muscle, while Opolopo offers two flips i one smouldering and stripped, the other buoyant and synth-heavy. These versions don't only overwrite the source, but underline its brilliance for new rooms and younger ears.

Review: 'Ski Jacket 87' is a compelling slice of watery warmth and womblike wonder from Edinburgh's Jacksonville, the latest signee of the city's equally esteemed fast-riser imprint Chateau Chapere. A two-decade fixture of the Scottish scene now, the Hizou and Innershift affiliate evidences his production abilities inasmuch as he does a concern for the dancefloor also. Something between a funky French touch and Mr Fingers-esque dream house is built and or felt here, though this isn't the kind of dream house that can really be achieved or constructed in reality, rather more so accessed only through the sublimity of the sonic daydream.

Don't You Want My Love (Dimitri From Paris Classic re-edit) (6:17)
Review: During her heyday in the late 1970s and early '80s, disco chanteuse Debbie Jacobs released some killer material (see "High on Your Love" and "Undercover Lover", for starters). "Don't You Want My Love", an energy-packed, orchestral disco smasher originally released in 1979 to promote the singer's debut album, is also up there with the best of her output. Here, the Paul Sabu produced original version gets the reissue treatment by Defected offshoot Glitterbox. Sabu's original club-length version sits astride the A-side, with Dimitri From Paris providing a "classic re-edit" on the flipside. His version sticks fairly close to the original, offering necessary nips and tucks here and there whilst steering clear of contemporary production trickery. Naturally, it's a rock solid rework from a true master of the scalpel rearrangement.

Opening with 'Green Mill,' the EP sets a deep groove with atmospheric layers and subtle melodies. Sepp's remix on the flip strips things back, adding his signature minimal touch and fresh textures to shift the track into new terrain. Side B brings 'Automatic,' a punchy, rhythm-driven piece, while 'Mortal' closes with introspective soundscapes and fluid grooves. This EP is a late-night essential for fans of intricate house rhythms.

Review: Last year, Home of House Records founder - and the producer responsible for the first release on the admired Kalahari Oyster Cult imprint - delivered his first new EP of music in over five years. The creative juices now flowing again, he's landed on another admired imprint: Hamburg stable Smallville. He begins in confident mood via the new age house-meets-vintage-Italian house hustle of 'Move Your Body', where Enigma style synth-flutes and elongated chords flutter around a squelchy bassline, before opting for a dreamier and more thickset classic deep garage-house sound on 'Feel The G'. The Italian producer reaches for more sublime ambient house chords, jazzy bass and eyes-closed melodies on flip-side opener 'One Kiss One', while 'Isola 89' sounds like his tribute to the 'paradise house' of Don Carlos and Sueno Latino.

Review: Four new prangers from France's BOOOoo! crew, startling our ears with audio-apparitions by ghosts of the resident French sceno-system: Jamahr, Mooglee, Jucid and Odeon. 'Black Loops' and 'Flex (Booty Mix)' invade elastic terrains of bass and flicky synth, churn them back through meshes of gradated beats and rond-squelching stab notes. 'The Question Is' eliminates much of the A-side's establishing layers and overdubs, harking rubbery and slip-tastic FX design, countered by the equally sticky 'Jimbeldance'.

Taylor himself has explained that 'Hung Up On You' was left over from a writing session from his other band The Prisoners and that it was "interesting to see how my JTQ guys, usually funk players, took to this approach." It channels the gritty punk and new wave essence of Medway to deliver a fast-paced rock'n'roll anthem that passionately rants about an enduring, unreciprocated love.

Review: He may come from noted house stock (his dad being one of the residents at Glasgow's Sub-Club for decades), but Jasper James' continued success has been built on his undoubted qualities as a DJ and producer. The latter is clearly evident on the Glaswegian's first EP for ChiWax, which follows earlier lauded releases for the likes of Steel City Dance Discs and Optimo Trax. He goes for the jugular on opener 'Factor 50', peppering a raw, analogue bassline and sweaty acid house beats with sparkling piano riffs and occasional hands-in-the-air moments, before opting for a more Kerri Chandler-influenced sound on 'NY Fuzz'. 'Lost Trax' is a riff-sporting jack-track that sounds like it could have been made in Chicago in 1988, while 'Webster' is a gorgeous, analogue-rich deep house workout.

'Rocker In The Disco' has a fleshy low end that rumbles with real weight as spiralling chords add scale. It's a moody cut that keeps you on edge then on the flip side, 'Dance Her Right' maintains the energy with punchy basslines and catchy hooks. It's a more buoyant sound designed to lock in dancers and take them to the next level. Both tracks have become key features in his sets at events like Art Basel, Burning Man, and Pacha Ibiza and following the success of his hit 'Sun is Shining' he shows he still has plenty more to say.

Sporting a highpassed breakdown befitting of only the best progressive house - the track's progression, in this case, gives rise a two-note reverie of the sweetest character - the sublime beat drop supplies the listener an almost equal sense of wonder, with vocals singing of dawn lights and nectarine skies, as the presence of a rainbow over the dance affirms our presence. The track's rhythm guitar is an especial choice by James, one that will surely go down well as a summery draw, and will stand out in the mixes and big name DJ droppings to come.

Review: Leo James is back on his own Body Language label with a sixth tasteful take on breakbeat-driven sounds. He shows his range here with different grooves all exploring different moments. 'Better Days' is one that has you gazing off to the middle distance, lost in the rueful pads. 'Olive Grove' is a slowed-down and dubbed-out sound with lots of lovely reverb and 'Burst The Gates' is a deep digi-dub style cut with angelic vocals. 'A Thousand White Kites Flying High Above The Sea' is the ambient laced downtempo closer for late-night dreaming.

Jungle DJ Tool
Review: Jamie 3:26, the Chicago house luminary, returns with the second instalment of his Danacefloor Damage series, a collection of re-rubbed disco cuts crafted with the dancefloor in mind, but possessing a depth that transcends the club. This time around, he's unearthed three gems, each an ode to his impeccable taste and his uncanny ability to breathe new life into forgotten classics. 'Flyin'' takes flight with a dizzying array of soaring strings and a groove that's as infectious as it is propulsive. 'Funkin' (Hardy Tribute Version)' pays homage to late disco/early house legend Ron Hardy, its driving bassline and soulful vocals a fitting tribute to his enduring influence. 'Jungle DJ Tool' injects a tribal energy into the mix, its percussive rhythms and hypnotic chants guaranteed to induce a state of dancefloor abandon. Jamie 3:26's edits are a masterclass in dancefloor manipulation, expertly balancing euphoric highs with moments of introspective restraint. A potent reminder that the classics never truly die when preserved in the right hands.

Space Cowboy (Michael Gray's Good Vibe Zone dub) (5:50)
Review: Jamiroquai always had a unique sound that sat somewhere between pop, house, disco, funk and cosmic delight. His great singles were always ripe for remixing and few do it better than house man Michael Gray. Here he tackles the evergreen 'Space Cowboy' with a Good Vibe Zone - extended mix that layers in some nice funky, soulful drums and lavish cosmic melodies that make it perfect for cultured clubs. On the flip of this new 12" from Sultra is a dub mix that is a little more playful and party starting. Both tunes are sure to raise the roof.

Review: Pensive, hangs-in-the-balance techno from Netherlands producer Jansen, whose control over mixes, from source material to final sound, is impressively granular. The second instalment in his 'Inner Labyrinth' series for Figure, the record is indeed a maze of complexity, albeit not one that is impossible to work out; the artist's reticulated brain terrain, redrawn in sonic form, is mapped out well. On 'Dub Dissonance', a central chord crystal resounds from inside a machinic nucleus, as various filters and harmonicisers seem to change the sound's valency after every bar or so. 'F Track' brings a similar balance through muted, dancing leads, while the record's overall uptick reaches its peak by the time of 'Sassafras', a buzzing zenith of apprehension.

Review: LA's Jarren returns to Apron Records with a six-track EP of glitz. Following on the heels of his last LP Antera, 'Fresco' marks a return to the EP form, and flaunts some of the crispest, swangiest electronic funk, house and electro on offer in the city of angels right now. We open with 'Jam', which catches us off guard almost but signalling that this could be the start of another kind of record, with staccato sports whistles, and three-note cheese synths aplenty, against a decided new jack swing. Only after this detour are we offered the real meat on things; the knocking 4x4 neons of 'Round & Round' and 'Florence Blue', and the increasing raw bootylectro of 'Gina' and/or 'The Way You Do'.

Review: Java steps up as the Redskin label surges on through double figures with a new EP, Nightfall, that covers a stylish range of jungle sounds. 'Brockout' has ld school signifiers like the ragga vocal and clipped vocal yelps, but some super smooth and silky pads and a serene sense of cosmic energy. '16 Stripes' is another collision of those different worlds - deep space ambience and more warehouse-ready jungle styles complete with some nice sci-fi bleeps. Closer 'Fi Di Girls Dem' shuts down with some nice crisp breakbeats and soulful vocal touches to ignite any party.

00 26 (7:16)
Review: This techno and house EP is a refined journey through futuristic themes, blending nostalgic echoes with forward-thinking soundscapes. Across its four tracks, the EP seamlessly intertwines elements of techno, trance and house, delivering a polished out of this world experience. Side-1 begins with 'Lucia', a melodic exploration that feels like a futuristic odyssey. Its nods to early 90s techno, trance and Italo house create a euphoric, spacey atmosphere. Following this, 'Solstice' offers a celestial take on techno, with shimmering tones and an air of serene beauty. Side-2's 'Orchid' is a standout, driven by a heavy rolling bassline and progressive house sensibilities. Darkwave and 80s electro influences infuse the track with dramatic tension, as its energy and melody build to a satisfying crescendo. Closing the EP, '00 26' is a smooth, uplifting piece of trance-inspired bliss, balancing beauty and subtlety with ease. Berkana EP is a example to JAVI's ability to craft tracks that are both nostalgic and forward-looking, perfect for late-night sets or introspective moments. Proper trance alert.

Review: Makin' Moves ushers in 2025 with a fiery four-tracker from Detroit's Javonntte, a producer whose journey through the city's vibrant musical landscape is etched into every groove. A veteran of the early 90s house scene, Javonntte honed his craft alongside luminaries like Blake Baxter and Amp Fiddler, his experience evident in the sheer breadth and depth of this collection. 'Chicago' is a pulsating homage to his hometown, its jacking rhythms and soulful chords imbued with the spirit of the city's dance music legacy. 'Good Vibration' exudes a radiant energy, its infectious melodies and uplifting vocals a testament to the joyous side of house music. 'What' takes a darker turn, its hypnotic groove and yearning vocals conjuring images of late-night introspection and soul-searching on the dancefloor. 'White Wing Dove' is a glorious ascent, its gospel-tinged chords and soaring vocals are exemplary of Javonntte's ability to weave spirituality and dancefloor energy into a cohesive whole. A great reminder that Javonntte's deep roots in house music continue to nourish his creativity

Review: A one-off reissue on Brooklyn's Finest - whose name in turn takes after one of B.I.G.'s many nicknames - Biggie Smalls' 'Sky's The Limit' set out Christopher Wallace's verbal message in piercing tones: go big or go home. The third and final single from B.I.G.'s second album Life After Death, this is the kind of song that obsessive fans might conclude portended his sticky end: not only was it the flagship song from the album, it also contained ominous sound design and sample work, and the music video features children dressed up as and imitating B.I.G., P. Diddy, Busta Rhymes, Faith Evans, and more, in a farcical pantomime of the rap game.

Review: Jazz N Palms' Soul 02 offers two tracks of infectious soul music. 'Away' on Side-1 is a smooth r&b track with a pop-friendly appeal and a soulful touch. The classy singing performance evokes vibes of northern soul and nu-soul, making it a great choice to end the night on a high note. On Side-2, 'Gro' delivers a classic 70s soulful guitar sound infused with blues elements. This instrumental track has a summery feel, perfect for the beach, and features a touch of Latin flavour that adds to its charm. Overall, Soul 02 is a well-crafted release that showcases Jazz N Palms' ability to create soulful and memorable music.
