Review: LA-based band ASHRR picked up plenty of new fans with their recent Sunshine Low album and now they're back with the sixth single from it and it comes with some seriously heavyweight names on the remix. Chicago house pioneer Ron Trent does his thing to 'Please Don't Stop The Rain' by going super deep, spine tingling and heady with some lush arps and distant guitar twangs adding a Balearic feel. Dub treatments come from the Prescription boss himself, while ASHRR's alter ego, ASHRR Soundsystem, offer up an instrumental and a remix that lay down dubby house drums and lush chord work. This one keeps the summer vibes going well into winter.

Review: This tasteful Spanish label always does a fine line in traditionally inclined deep house. Their latest drop brings together the talents of Andrew Lozano and Trevor Vichas. 'Don't U Feel It' kicks off with a playful skip in the drums and one of those spoken word vocals that add plenty of atmosphere. It's Demuir who remixes this one with even more light-hearted groove and jazzy Rhodes chords. Their sound blended British psychedelic house with elements of new beat, industrial, EBM and early acid house and in doing so captured the raw energy of the UK rave scene. Notably different from typical acid house acts of the time, A2L's music took in machine funk, samplers and turntable techniques to create trippy, infectious grooves. This collection compiles rare underground gems from them from 1989 and features standout tracks like 'Even Though It's Make Believe' and 'Come On.' Review: Ahn Chi-haeng, a towering figure in Korea's gayo scene, made his mark in the 1960s through the 8th US Army entertainment circuit, later leading the popular 1970s soft rock band Young Sound. By the early 90s, he was a powerhouse in the music industry, known for his Midas touch as a producer. At the age of 60, Ahn shifted gears, embracing his Buddhist faith through a series of experimental sutra recordings. Unlike traditional sutra renditions, Ahn infused these spiritual texts with hip-hop beats and guitar riffs, making them both spiritually resonant and musically engaging. The 2004 release of these recordings, originally meant for a small Buddhist audience, found a second life a decade later when younger listeners discovered them online. This reissue, part of Beatball's effort to spotlight Ahn's extensive catalog, selects six standout sutras from the 2004 double CD. The tracks, including 'Hip Heart Sutra' and 'Mantra of Avalokiteshvara', are meticulously remastered by Dave Cooley, bringing new energy to the beats and ensuring these unique pieces resonate with both Ahn's original intent and today's listeners. This vinyl release offers a rare opportunity to experience Ahn's innovative fusion of spirituality and modern music.

Review: In the mid-90s, Lee Rodriguez, known as Mr. Onester, produced some of New York's most iconic, gritty house tracks. Review: Alfa Mist and Amika Quartet share a new ennead of never-heard-before tracks, alongside a few expansions on earlier releases: Recurring. An eternal return of saintly jazz and storytelling hip-hop, the record comes hot on the heels of Mist's recent Variables LP (2023) and the Manchester quartet's Amika's earlier 'Exist' release from earlier in 2024. The latter group have toured extensively with Alfa Mist in recent years, and the new live record notably foreruns its full release with a new exclusive, 'Checkpoint (Violence)', on which Mist not only drums, but at the same time MCs, with verve and flair. Here Mist concept-checks everything from modern-day apartheid to astrology (and exasperations thereof - "don't ask me your starsign"). Amika, meanwhile, embellish each mix with searing string arcos and long fibrous tugs, which seem, ironically, to assure us about the future, though they do lend the songs a demure mood: "don't fret".

Review: Second time around for eccentric Sheffield trio The All Seeing I's sole full-length excursion, 1999's Pickled Eggs & Sherbert, which here lands on vinyl for the first time.The album, a celebration of Steel City creativity featuring cameos from Cocker, Tony Christie, Babybird and the Human League's Phil Oakey, is best remembered for hit singles 'The Beat Goes On', 'Walk Like a Panther' - lyrics reportedly penned by Jarvis Cocker - and 'The First Man in Space', but there are plenty more highlights amongst the unique blends of fractured dancehall rhythms, redlined electronica, oddball easy listening references, experimental d&b rhythms and genuine leftfield pop nous. Review: Despite producing one of the most influential rock records of the 20th century, American Football's legacy has not been a traditional one. Originally, 'American Football' was meant to be a one-and-done situation, with only a couple of shows played; The band members were all college students and summer was fast approaching. The album was released and the members parted ways shortly thereafter - little would they have guessed that it would go on to define an entire genre for years to come, finding its audience over time. It's not hard to see why, especially with the viral opening track 'Never Meant', which has found fame online repeatedly throughout the years. 'American Football' is melancholic, somewhat tender at points, and undoubtedly contains a certain mystique to it that completely swept the emo crowd by storm. After 14 years, when the band reunited, they had a legion of adoring fans all of a sudden - it's stories like these that prove that true talent will always triumph. Whether it's today, tomorrow or in a decade, good music will always rise to the top. Boasting as a definitive version, Polyvinyl resurfaced the original audio tapes and recruited the OG engineer - Jonathan Pines - for a top-notch remaster.
