Review: Blur were always the posh, private school answer to the more streetwise cool of Oasis during the heyday of Brit pop during the mid to late 90s. Their second album Modern Life Is Rubbish got them back into the affections of the public after their debut album somewhat turned people off (with many thinking it was a cash in on the popular but fading Manchester sound) and saw the band fall behind the likes of Suede. Part of the raisin for the return to success was the sonic makeover which brought more tradition guitar-pop sounds back with lush melodies and poignant humour in the lyrics from lead singer Damon Albarn. On its 30th anniversary the album now gets a full reissue as part of National Album Day 2023

Review: Legend has it that David Bowie was so lost in a vortex of cocaine and ego during the making of this record to such a degree that he now can't remember anything about its creation at all. Typically of the Dame though, in the midst of all this madness he created a masterpiece, and arguably his greatest album of all. With a hint of the funk of influence of 'Young Americans', yet filtered through a glacial European sensibility, it's a genre-transcending tour-de-force of boundless scope and imperious swagger. It marked the start of her second period with the Warner Group and hit the Top 10 of the UK Charts as well as being certified gold. Review: They're the biggest but most hated band on the planet, but that will never stop Coldplay. The band has long been at the top of the pop-rock world and once again Music of the Spheres is likely to keep them there. It is an album rather less wrought with emotional tension than they are known for but still has one eye firmly on the cosmos, like much of their material. In fact, there is a loose concept here that revolves around a distant solar system. The lead single, 'My Universe,' features K-pop kings BTS and is already a number one, and the rest of the tunes are so unashamedly big they will likely follow.

Review: The story of The Corrs speaks to all our romanticised images of how the music industry once worked. Recording demos in a makeshift home studio in Dundalk, Ireland, the familial group were playing a date at Whelan's, a Dublin bar with an enviable reputation for live music (the likes of Jeff Buckley, Arctic Monkeys, Bloc Party and Kate Nash have all graced the stage) at which Jean Kennedy Smith happened to be in attendance.
Then the US Ambassador to Ireland, she was so impressed with the band they were invited to perform at a FIFA World Cup 1994 match being held in Boston. Once Stateside, they met Atlantic's A&R, Jason Flom, and the rest is history. Review: ††† (Crosses) are a synthwave band, first formed in 2011 by former Deftones member Chino Moreno, Far's Shaun Lopez and bassist Chuck Doom. Swooping in on the extant enthusiasm for chilling sounds popular at the time, like dungeon synth and witch house - but also bringing in classic synthpop elements from older bands like Depeche Mode - their music took the music press by storm. What was thought to be a short-lived revival of a sound, however, led to them not releasing any music after their debut, until now. 'PERMANENT.RADIANT' stakes a claim for the timelessness of their sound, mixing in trip-hop and rock elements (choice cuts: 'Vivien', 'Sensation') to an already doomy and bleak format.

Review: Crosses (traditionally written as +++) is the shoegazing alt-rock collaboration of Deftones frontman Chino Moreno and Far guitarist Shaun Lopez. Combining elements of dream pop, darkwave, and witch house into their post-rock tinged machinations, whilst drawing on their previous output to concoct an atmosphere not dissimilar from their previous works, there's enough unique motifs for the material here to stand on its own. Goodnight, God Bless, I Love U, Delete. marks their first full-length since 2014's serene self-titled debut LP and comes less than a year after last December's illustrious return to from on the Permanent Radiant EP. With outside producers such as Dawn Golden receiving credits as well as the appearance of Run The Jewels mastermind El-P and The Cure's Robert Smith, expect another dizzying batch of euphoric, hypnotic, sultry and sinister dreamgaze bliss.

Review: No matter what type of project Deftones followed up their career-defining White Pony with, it was destined to disappoint at least some of their devout fanbase. Originally released in 2003, the band's self-titled fourth effort would mark their final collaborative project with iconic producer Terry Date (until reuniting for 2020's Ohms), while notably eschewing much of the "nu-metal" residue that still clung to their sonic makeup. Embracing elements of trip-hop and post-metal, while directly linking the group to the "are they or aren't they shoegaze?" debate which has loomed overhead ever since, the album has seen a steady reassessment from lacklustre follow up to underappreciated gem. With any luck, this reissue should continue to help highlight the cause as cuts such as 'Minerva' still soar with triumphant yet sultry hypnotics while 'Hexagram' serves as one of the heftiest cuts in the band's canon. It didn't even need an additional title. This is simply Deftones, and it still slaps two decades on.
