Review: Singer, songwriter, former Navy sailor and Oklahoma native Zach Bryan first rose to fame in 2019 with his self-released debut country album DeAnn. Bryan's raw storytelling approach attracted a dedicated following, justifying many follow-ups - his latest EP Summertime Blues included. Something of a sibling piece to the recent album American Heartbreak, the EP deploys sweet vocal lilts, banjo strums and fiddle bowings to channels many brooding, blue-collar emotions, reflecting lives lived on the road and bittersweet days gone by.

Just Another Rainbow (5:34)
Review: Two of the likeliest lads from Manchester team up for the first day release of their new collaborative project. And its something of a full circle moment, with Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher previously citing Stone Roses hero John Squire in a list of formative teenage musical inspirations, who, in turn, first encountered the former when both bands were working the same studio, respectively recording Definitely Maybe and The Second Coming. The pair first shared honours three years after that, co-writing 'Love Me & Leave Me' for Squire's relatively short-lived outfit, The Seahorses, in 1997. Skip forward to 2022 and Squire joined the Gallaghers et al on stage at Knebworth, reprising his appearances for renditions of 'Champagne Supernova' at the band's 1996 shows, spurring the idea to do something together again. Here's the result - and it's precisely what the duo should sound like together.

She's Lost Control (4:45)
Review: All of Joy Division's biggest hits have been remastered and reissues by Warner this month. This particular heavyweight wedge of 12" vinyl offers "Atmosphere", which interestingly enough was first put in March 1980 by the Sordide Sentimental label as a France-only single under the title "Licht und Blindheit". Like "Transmission" or "Love Will Tear Us Apart", it is an essential tune with a real moodiness in the production rom Martin Hamnett. Curtis's vocals have a sense of finality to them that was to prove all too real when he committed suicide not long after recording it. 1979's "She's Lost Control" is an other archetypal, angular groove with the jittery drums that made the band so essential.

Novelty (2020 Digital Remaster) (4:02)
Review: Warner has worked on a run of Joy Division reissues this month and after their most famous "Love Will Tear Us Apart" comes "Transmission" which is not far behind. A 2020 Digital Remaster reboots the sounds but retains the grit and urgency of the original, which is a surging post-punk anthem filled with angst but also a sense of vulnerability and melancholy that makes it so much more enduring. "Novelty" on the flip has a broken beat line, gauzy guitar riffs and is underpinned by an excellent insistent baseline that never lets up.

Review: This 12-inch picture disc version of Madonna's 'Erotica' single (taken from the concept album about sex and romance of the same name) is a thing to behold. It arrives, finally, courtesy of Warmer Music and is in honour of the tune's 30th anniversary. The picture on the vinyl is from Madge's Sex book but was withdrawn before it actually got released back in 1992. Three versions are presented here - the original album version, plus an instrumental and a radio edit.

Review: You might think that you could cop a copy of New Order's seminal hit 'Blue Monday' fairly easily and cheaply given its ubiquity over the years. But no, copies in good condition still fetch around 50 quid, so this remastered reissue is well worth a cop. The single's iconic bassline and twitchy synth modulations very much soundtrack a generation, if not an entire youth revolution, but still enliven any dance floor many years later. What's more, the de-humanised vocals will always provide real singalong joy. On the flip is a 'The Beach', which is drenched in echo and reverb and general sonic filth.

Bizarre Love Triangle (6:39)
Bizarre Dub Triangle (7:06)
Review: New Order's 'Bizarre Love Triangle' stands as a hallmark of synth-pop, encapsulating the band's innovative spirit and leaving an indelible mark on their legacy. Featured on their fourth album, Brotherhood, this track, released in November 1986, is often celebrated by fans despite its initial lukewarm reception on the charts, leaving even the band members puzzled about its initial performance. The creation of 'Bizarre Love Triangle' began when New Order borrowed a Fairlight synthesiser, leading to a distinctive rhythmic bass line crafted by frontman Bernard Sumner. The song evolved into a high-energy electro-pop anthem, with an iconic chorus that captures listeners from the get-go. Despite its modest chart success compared to other hits like 'Blue Monday', the track played a crucial role in establishing the band's international appeal, especially in the American market. It quickly became a live favourite and a staple in New Order's performances, showcasing their knack for reinventing their classics. With remastered and reissued vinyl now available, 'Bizarre Love Triangle' continues to make new fans along the way while holding a special place in the hearts of 80s music lovers still. Its enduring charm is a testament to its brilliance as a pop masterpiece, inviting diverse interpretations and connections.

Shame Of The Nation (7:56)
Review: New Order's 'State of the Nation' returns as a remastered reissue of the original 12" single, originally released in 1986. During this period, the band's confidence was soaring, and this track exemplifies their knack for crafting catchy dance music that resonated with audiences. The remastered version maintains the original tracklisting, including the second side 'Shame of the Nation', which serves as a dub rendition of the title track. This version extends the rhythmic elements, offering a fresh perspective on the song while preserving its infectious energy. State of the Nation not only secured its place as a Top 40 hit in the UK but also featured on the iconic compilation Substance, released the following year. New Order's enduring legacy and ability to blend catchy melodies with danceable beats is captured perfectly with these recent 12" single reissues.

Lonesome Tonight (5:13)
Review: The remastered reissues of New Order classics continues with this 1984 gem 'Thieves Like Us' (the title is taken from the Robert Altman movie). It originally landed, of course, on Factory and like all that label's releases, comes with a Peter Saville designed cover, based on a painting by Giorgio de Chirico. It's the band's seventh single and the remastering job has been done from the original master tapes at Abbey Road Studios. The title track is a typically forlorn affair to start, but it erupts into a more joyous and life-affirming sing along. 'Lonesome Tonight' is as low key and wallowsome as the name suggests.

Dub-Vulture (7:58)
Review: As part of the Low-Life 'Definitive Edition' release campaign, New Order reissue the 12" singles from the album, first released in May 1985 at the height of their controversial exploitation by Factory Records. 'Sub-Culture' is one of its lead singles: originally released on white label (infamously, graphic designer Peter Saville allegedly deemed the song unworthy of his talents), this functional synthpop banger reeks with and oozes of FM-farty glitz, and lyrically concerns a nocturnal protagonist, disaffected with the modern, measured day-night cycle. The B 'Dub-vulture' pulls a similar instrumental trick with a varied melody.

Review: Alongside the reissue of their eternally adored Substance 1987 compilation, New Order are bringing back this 12" edition of their equally seminal 'True Faith'. It's one of the tracks the group are most readily associated with, capturing the essence of the band around bombastic pop hooks, the spikiness of new wave and Bernard Sumner's sharp distillation of the prevailing British mood. It's a golden slice of pop history which sounds better than ever thanks to a new remaster, and the same goes for the excellent B side '1963'.

Review: If you had an asset as potent and praised as 'Blue Monday', you'd want to see where else you could take it, wouldn't you? After New Order released their singles collection Substance 1987, they served up 'Blue Monday 88' with some subtle refinements overseen by none other than Quincy Jones. It's just the right approach, adding some spice to the rhythm section but keeping the brilliance of the song intact. Meanwhile 'Beach Buggy' on the flip sees Michael Johnson going in on the instrumental flip side version for those who need maximum club reaction. Both tracks absolutely shine thanks to a tidy remastering treatment, so if you don't already own it, now's the chance to put that right.

Review: When New Order released 'True Faith' in 1987, they broke the mould as the first band to present multiple different editions of their single right at the point of arrival. As well as the widely adored original version of the track, there was a club-ready version mixed by the mighty Shep Pettibone, a true king of New York's scene who knew exactly how to get the best out of the track for the dancefloor. As singles compilation Substance 1987 gets a high-end reissue, so too does this late 80s club monster sounding brighter and bolder than ever thanks to a tidy remaster treatment, with the 'True Dub' version on the B side for those who really want to lock in.

Arnold Layne (Recorded live At The Barbican Centre, London At The Syd Barrett Tribute Concert) (3:47)
Review: Here's a Record Store Day 2020 special that all Pink Floyd fans will want to take a look at: an etched, single-sided seven-inch single featuring a previously unreleased version of Piper at the Gates of Dawn-era favourite 'Arnold Lane'. It was recorded at The Madcaps Last Laugh concert in 2007, a tribute to band co-founder Syd Barrett. It features three Floyd members - David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Rick Wright - alongside vocalist Jon Carin, whose singing is very similar to that of Barrett, and bassist Andy Bell. It's a fairly faithful rendition all told, and one with added weight given the travails of Barrett after he left Pink Floyd in the late 1960s.

Review: From the grave, Prince is serving up a banger just in time for Christmas fun this year in the form of a one-sided 12" on Warner. It found him working with his trusty New Power Generation and features the 'damn near 10 min' mix of the song 'Gett Off' which is sure to fire up any dancefloor. It was originally a single - also served up as a one-sider - to promote Prince's new band with a cover that boldly declared that "Nothing can stop Prince and the New Power Generation" and was only issued on 1500 copies, so this is a great treat for fans to own all these years later.

The British group's self-titled debut album was cooler and smarter than many of their candied peers (Spice Girls, we're looking at you) and blended effortlessly soulful vocals with rich, atmospheric production. From start to finish, the album lays down emotionally charged and honest lyrics. The production is lush yet minimal, allowing the powerful vocals to take centre stage, with classics like 'Never Ever', 'I Know Where It's At' and 'Lady Marmalade ('98 remix)' all still oozing a nice new soul and r&b edge.

Review: Blur were always the posh, private school answer to the more streetwise cool of Oasis during the heyday of Brit pop during the mid to late 90s. Their second album Modern Life Is Rubbish got them back into the affections of the public after their debut album somewhat turned people off (with many thinking it was a cash in on the popular but fading Manchester sound) and saw the band fall behind the likes of Suede. Part of the raisin for the return to success was the sonic makeover which brought more tradition guitar-pop sounds back with lush melodies and poignant humour in the lyrics from lead singer Damon Albarn. On its 30th anniversary the album now gets a full reissue as part of National Album Day 2023

The opening track, 'Intro,' has a theatrical vibe that transitions into the upbeat 'Be Someone,' showing a departure from Boone's melancholy themes. The album tells a compelling story of love, loss, and heartbreak, with each song bringing something unique. Tracks like 'Slow It Down' are danceable, while others delve into deeper topics like depression and death. At just 21, Boone's talent for poetic imagery is evident, suggesting he has a very promising future.

Typically of the Dame though, in the midst of all this madness he created a masterpiece, and arguably his greatest album of all. Initially released in 1972, it stands out as the only album credited solely to Captain Beefheart, even though it does feature much of his Magic Band prominently. The material, integral to the band's repertoire, highlights Beefheart's eclectic musical vision and experimental spirit, taking raw blues as its starting point but then twisting into it hithertoo unrecognisable shapes and psychedelic distortions. Reissued for Record Store Day 2024 as a deluxe double LP set in a gatefold jacket with milky clear vinyl, this edition revitalises the album's enigmatic charm for contemporary audiences and reminds us all of its magnificent blend of blues, rock and avant-garde elements.

Review: Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band are the latest act to be featured in Warner's series of Now Playing greatest hits-style comps. Born Don Vliet, Captain Beefheart was a true innovator in modern music, boasting a four-and-a-half-octave vocal range, and fused free jazz, Delta blues, classical music and rock & roll with unique rhythms and surreal lyrics. Though he never achieved mainstream success, his influence permeated punk, new wave and post-rock and this album shows why, with tracks like 'I'm Gonna Booglarize You Baby' and 'Her Eyes Are a Blue Million Miles' showcasing his bolder moves, alongside the more introspective 'My Head Is My Only House When It Rains' and 'Clear Spot.' Vliet, a child prodigy in art, moved to the Mojave Desert in his teens, where he met Frank Zappa. They initially collaborated on a film project, but Vliet eventually formed the Magic Band. After several lineup changes, they released the seminal Trout Mask Replica in 1969. Beefheart's career spanned various experimental phases until he retired in 1982 to focus on painting, earning acclaim for his abstract outsider art.

Review: Cher's new compilation Forever is a comprehensive celebration of her legendary career, now available on 2LP crystal clear vinyl with a stunning silver foil cover. This is the first vinyl collection of its kind since 1992, featuring a remastered selection of 19 iconic tracks. Spanning decades of hits, the album includes fan favorites like 'Believe,' 'If I Could Turn Back Time,' 'The Shoop Shoop Song,' and 'Strong Enough,' capturing the essence of Cher's enduring appeal. Sequenced non-chronologically, Forever brings together Cher's biggest chart-toppers, including 'Gypsys, Tramps, and Thieves,' 'Dark Lady,' and 'You Haven't Seen the Last of Me,' along with her beloved ABBA covers and other timeless classics. Each track has been carefully remastered from the original tapes, ensuring the highest sound quality for this release. For fans seeking even more, the digital-only Forever: Fan Edition offers an additional 19 tracks, including rarities like 'A Woman's Story,' produced by Phil Spector, and the long-out-of-print 'I'd Rather Believe in You.' Cher continues to prove that her influence on music is unmatched, and this collection is a fitting tribute to her lasting legacy.

Review: Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head back in 2002 was a move on from their debut that showed deeper emotional and sonic complexity. With Chris Martin's distinctive voice at the helm, the album features anthems like 'Clocks' and 'The Scientist' which blend atmospheric rock with introspective lyrics. Tracks such as 'God Put a Smile Upon Your Face' and 'In My Place' highlight the band's ability to fuse melodic hooks with poignant themes and the album's exploration of love, loss and introspection, supported as always by grand and dynamic arrangements and epic production, remains a standout in the band's catalogue.

Review: They're the biggest but most hated band on the planet, but that will never stop Coldplay. The band has long been at the top of the pop-rock world and once again Music of the Spheres is likely to keep them there. It is an album rather less wrought with emotional tension than they are known for but still has one eye firmly on the cosmos, like much of their material. In fact, there is a loose concept here that revolves around a distant solar system. The lead single, 'My Universe,' features K-pop kings BTS and is already a number one, and the rest of the tunes are so unashamedly big they will likely follow.

Review: The Corrs return to their Celtic roots with their seventh studio album, blending familiar folk elements with their signature soft rock sound. Opening with 'Son of Solomon', the album features the tin whistle and violin that defined their early hits, with Andrea's emotive voice taking center stage. The album shines when the three sisters harmonise, evoking the charm of their early classics like 'Runaway'. Now pressed on red vinyl, tracks like 'SOS', addressing the Syrian refugee crisis, showcase the band's growing social awareness. 'Dear Life' cleverly blends lyrical wit with traditional instrumentation, while 'No Go Baby' offers a heartfelt, minimalist reflection on loss. The album closes with the melancholic, nearly eight-minute 'The Sun and the Moon', highlighting Andrea's vocal artistry. The band's harmonious rapport and Andrea's captivating vocals keep their sound fresh, is a nostalgic yet satisfying experience for longtime fans.

Review: Reissued on yellow vinyl, Home by The Corrs marks a fitting tribute to their Irish heritage and late mother, capturing their classic blend of Celtic roots with polished pop sensibility. Originally released in 2006, this album reflects the band's true embrace of traditional Irish music, produced by Mitchell Froom and backed by the BBC Radio 2 Orchestra. The album elegantly balances traditional favoruites, like the haunting 'Black is the Color' and nostalgic 'Spancill Hill', with lively jigs such as 'Old Hag' and 'Haste to the Wedding'. Andrea Corr's angelic vocals shine, especially in Gaelic tracks 'Buachaill on Eirne' and 'Brid og Ni Mhaille', infusing the album with authenticity. Songs like Richard Thompson's 'Dimming of the Day' and Anna McGarrigle's 'Heart Like A Wheel' are soulful additions, while 'Old Town' feels slightly at odds with the folk theme. Avoiding overt sentimentality, Home stands as a lovingly crafted and intelligent collection of Celtic-inspired pop that fans and newcomers alike will find captivating.

Review: In Blue, the celebrated album by The Corrs, finds the Irish siblings navigating the fine line between their Celtic roots and mainstream pop sensibilities. Initially striking a balance with their 1995 debut, Forgiven, Not Forgotten, the group has evolved, embracing a polished sound that resonates widely, particularly in the U.S. Their collaboration with renowned producer Robert John Lange infuses the album with radio-friendly appeal, evident in standout tracks like 'Breathless' and 'Irresistible'. While some fans may lament the departure from traditional instruments, the album showcases The Corrs' melodic strength and lyrical warmth, proving accessible to a broad audience. Songs like 'One Night' and 'No More Cry' inject moments of freshness amidst the pop sheen, highlighting the band's ability to craft catchy, memorable tunes. In Blue remains enjoyable, celebrating The Corrs' musical journey while introducing their sound to new listeners. Permission To Land is the debut album by glam rockers The Darkness, originally released in 2003. True to their name, The Darkness were dark horses indeed, having been sorely underestimated by the guffawing gatekeepers at Sony, who failed to see any promise in the band after being deemed "uncool", perhaps due to their bombastic rock & roll sound and high vocal drawl from Justin Hawkins. Sony were easily knocked off their high horse, however, when the band later signed with Atlantic, after which the album would top the US Albums Chart, peaking at number two. For the fans, this reissue harks back to their earliest hits, such as 'I Believe in a Thing Called Love', and 'Growing On Me'.

Review: Some 19 years later (and not a moment too soon) this great compilation from Nu Metal legends Deftones is seeing its much-needed repress - with an added remastering to sweeten the deal. A tough record to find at a stomachable price for a while, 'B Sides & Rarities' is full of acoustic versions, demos and covers of the likes of The Smiths, Cocteau Twins, The Cure and - most amusingly - Sade. 'Wax and Wane' is a severely underrated cover, a wicked interpretation filled with punchy guitars and, of course, Chino Moreno's mastery of blending metal and new wave vocals. The most popular of the tracks on offer here is, without doubt, 'Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want', their cover of The Smiths' 1984 B-side to 'William It Was Really Nothing' . It's a rollercoaster of a cover, with a wild guitar solo and filled with the same rumbling, underlying sadness that made the original such a staple. Who doesn't love a melancholic metal song?

Review: If you're going to re-release a Deftones album with stacks and stacks of bonus material, including remixes by artists ranging from The Cure's Robert Smith to Squarepusher, then White Pony was always going to be a solid choice. First unveiled in 2000, the band's third album marked a major turning point in their career and sound, bringing in far more experimental ideas to the already-alternative metal of their early output.

Two decades on and the original work still holds up to significant scrutiny - the kind of scrutiny bands like Deftones are used to, having created legions of highly obsessed fans during their time on the road and in studios. What makes this revisitation so compelling, though, are the bits and pieces that weren't included with the record first time round, which should keep you busy for quite some time.

Review: Elusive former Odd Future wordsmith Earl Sweatshirt celebrated the ten year anniversary of his seminal 2013 major label debut Doris back in August to a sold out crowd down the road from our offices in KOKO. Directly after the show had finished, the mass would march down to the Jazz Cafe for an exclusive club night where teasers were unveiled of the long-gestating collaborative album with esteemed, multi-generational hip-hop producer The Alchemist. Already streaming while vinyl currently sits on the presses, Voir Dire offers a reliably hazy, laid back yet subtly esoteric collection of forward thinking, muted bangers; breathing with the same sonic ambivalence of a project such as Madvillainy, while the mainstay features from Sweatshirt alumni MIKE and Vince Staples aid in grounding the work within the ever-expanding tapestry of Earl's output.

Review: First released back in 2006, Electronic's on-point 'best of' collection returns in expanded, double-disc form. So, alongside the original collection (CD1), with its mix of singles and cuts plucked from Bernard Sumner and Johnny Marr's three collaborative albums, we're treated to a second disc packed with rarities, lesser-known remixes and largely forgotten B-sides. There are some genuine treats to be found, including a swathe of club-focused mixes that showcase the project's dance music roots. Highlights include 808 State's majestic, breakbeat-driven 12" mix of Neil Tennant collaboration 'Disappointed', the piano-rich "peak-time at the Hacienda" 'DNA Groove Mix' of 'Get The Message', Graeme Park and Mike Pickering's similarly superb 'Vocal Remix' of 'Getting Away With It', and 'Idiot Country 2', a rushing club workout remixed by Stereo MCs under their forgotten Ultimatum alias.

Review: British synth-pop supergroup Electronic consisted of Bernard Sumner of New Order, Johnny Marr of The Smiths, Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys and Karl Bartos of Kraftwerk. The combined clout of these names surely amounted to enough credit to patent the name "Electronic", which always to us felt partially like an attempt to become synonymous with the music genre itself (as if these guys weren't synonymous with it already). On Get The Message, a 2006 compilation named after the second single from their debut album, we hear a thorough checking of their contribution to the golden decade that is the 1990s, cycling chronologically through the group's greatest hits, as well as some extra rarities and tidbits for curious fans.

It was their tenth album and second eponymous work after their 1968 debut and is often known by fans as The White Album. The lineup was the first to feature Lindsey Buckingham as guitarist and Stevie Nicks as a vocalist, with Bob Welch having left in 1974. The album hit the numbering spot on the Billboard 200 and gave rise to three top-twenty singles 'Over My Head', 'Rhiannon', and 'Say You Love Me.' Review: Not all indie-rock bands are particularly keen on getting their music remixed by electronic artists, but Foals have always embraced the potential of reworks. For proof, check Collected Reworks, a beautifully packaged set of remixes that charts the course of their 15-year career in revisions rather than singles or greatest hits. Pressed to vibrant coloured vinyl (there are green, yellow and pink slabs of wax), it contains a mixture of old and new remixes including stellar interpretations from both big room headliners (Hot Since '82, Hot Chip, Solomun and Purple Disco Machine all deliver vibrant dancefloor-focused takes), experimental electronica heroes (see the versions by Kieran Hebden and Mount Kimbie) and underground scene stalwarts (see the long-overlooked 2015 Lindstrom tweak of 'Give It All').

Review: It's been more than 10 years since Foals first ignited indie spirits with their Antidotes LP and following Total Life Forever and Holy Fire, the Oxford-founded group have held firm in purporting their fully fledged sound. The band's aesthetic has grown in size and stature over the years with this LP looking at what seems to be the large scale arena. The lighter, melancholic and finger picking techniques of their surf rock and synth subtleties appear nonchalantly in tracks "On The Luna" and "Exits" - with 80s UK synth and George Michael-styled vocals to boot - while its stadium ecstasy for the chorus humming "Sunday".

Review: Warner Records has put together this special reissue of The Rising Tied as a limited-edition apple-red double album which includes four bonus cuts that are making their vinyl debut. It first landed in 2005 from Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda and marked his first foray into solo hip-hop production. The album went platinum and is packed with big-name collaborations with plenty of the scene's biggest names sun as Como as well as pop heroes like John Legend. Those bonus tracks are 'Be Somebody,' 'There They Go,' and 'The Hard Way' which were on CD back in 2005 and 'Welcome' which was a standalone single in 2015.

Review: After Beady Eye split in 2014, Liam Gallagher appeared conflicted about whether he would pursue a solo career, resolving in 2016 that this year's album was set in stone. Fans of previous work will undoubtedly be contented with solo debut 'As You Were', with it channelling the British pop influence, singalong riffs and the classic anthemic writing that Oasis were famed for. As expected from a Gallagher brother, the album is drenched in hubris, but Liam lets his guard down with surprising and rare moments of what seems to be vulnerability. Aside from the cocky rock and roll swagger, it's these moments that give 'As You Were' a little more depth than people were perhaps expecting.

Review: Anyway, here's... Knebworth 22, the latest live album from Liam Gallagher, renowned British singer-songwriter and former frontman of Oasis. 15 tracks of Gallagher's solo originals are heard after being recorded live at the Knebworth Park in England on 3rd-4th June, 2022, including 'Wall Of Glass', 'Shockwave', 'Once' and 'All You're Dreaming Of'. Of course, it wouldn't be the same without the inclusion of a great many Oasis classics, not least 'Rock 'n' Roll Star', 'Wonderwall', and 'Champagne Supernova'. Also a celebration of the 25th anniversary of Oasis' legendary concerts at the very same Park in 1996 - which were attended by over 250,000 people each night - the album is available on yellow vinyl 2xLP with a poster and a replica ticket.
