Review: Masterful curator Paul Hillery returns with another essential instalment in this wonderful BBE series. Volume 3 continues his tradition of unearthing rare, high-quality tracks so it is a perfect companion to his Children of the Sun trilogy. This one spans funky folk, jazzy AOR, lo-fi dub and DIY folktronica and includes numerous gems like Sheila Chandra's ethereal vocals and Tim Green's euphoric grooves, a playful vibe from Gil De Ray on 'Something About Nothing' and plenty more besides. With extensive sleeve notes, this is a deep sonic journey that also cements the man behind it as an expert archivist.

Review: East London record label and shop BBE assign their curators' arm over at If Music another reccy in Latin and Afro-infused "deep jazz", yielding this brilliant fourth edition in a series. Made up solely of material formerly licensed to, but not necessarily released by, If Music, this one represents a global diversity of Afrobeat and jazz artists: from the creeping, hair-raising panter 'N'Kon Kini N'Kon N'Kon' by none other than stowaway Cream drummer Ginger Baker (cut from the album Eleven Sides Of Baker, on which there is an impressively mammoth cast of contributors) in collaboration with Ransome Kuti, through to the Japanese drummer George Hirota ('Process Of Cloud') and Kan Digor ('Croonardise').

Review: Though they've trodden remarkably different paths through music so far, the coming-together of UK singer-producers Allysha Joy, Hidden Spheres and Finn Rees makes for a latent talent condensation of the "of course!" kind. Solina hears them freshwater rock pool their shared ear for groove and space, weaving motifs of Balearic house, jazz, broken beat and 90s street soul through a vivid whole; long after each artist's works across in veins of future beats, chillwave, deep house and UK bass. From the tremulous Rhodes overwash of 'Promised Me Love' to the sophomoric sunstroke 'Trust The Feeling', Joy's vocals usually only appear lately, like a vocal forest spirit peeking its head out on the ecotone between wood and sea. Not a showcase of chops, but a case of layered restraint, unfurling unhurriedly.

Review: Brit soul legend Omar's new work finds him in full command of his craft, gracefully vaulting through decades of soul, funk and jazz with a sound that feels both grounded in history and refreshingly modern. His collaborations - from Paul Weller's understated elegance to Giggs' streetwise energy - highlight his remarkable versatility, yet it's his own magnetic voice that pulls everything together. The arrangements are lush, rich with organic instrumentation and tinged with Caribbean warmth, offering a sound palette that's as riveting as it is all-consuming. Tracks like 'There's Much Love In The World' reflect the timeless optimism that runs through Omar's music, celebrating unity while reminding us of the power of soulful connection. Despite the star-studded line-up of guests, this release is unmistakably Omar's. His voice - distinctive and effortlessly smooth - remains at the heart of each song, whether he's trading verses with Raheem DeVaughn or harmonising with Ledisi's rich tones. The musical textures on display are just as varied, blending organic rhythms with electronic beats that never overwhelm the track's emotional core. Over time, Omar's musical approach has only become more layered and expansive, yet his unmistakable sound remains intactianchored in the originality that made him a key figure in modern soul and funk.

Review: BBE, known for its groundbreaking J-Jazz and J-Jazz Masterclass series, now shines a light on an inerasable gem in Japan's national discography: the debut LP Rainbow Love by Orquesta Del Sol, the country's first authentic salsa band. Salsa's roots in Japan trace back to the post-WWII era, with groups like Tokyo Cuban Boys, but it was the 1977 Fania All-Stars tour that initiated wider interest. Percussionist Masahito "Pecker" Hashida, influenced by New York's salsa scene, formed Orquesta Del Sol on his return. Their debut, put out in 1981, blends compositions in Japanese, Spanish, and English, while working in a cover of Noro Morales' 'Rumbambola'. Produced by Shuichi "Ponta" Murakami, the album's bold sound was a product of Japan's studio scene and the band's connection to the Nuyorican salsa style. This reissue includes seven bonus tracks from the band's later years, remastered for a new generation.

From The Fire is a superb new album from Audrey Powne that is about as accomplished as any debut could be. The young auteur herself has composed all nine cuts, wrote all the lyrics, plays all the piano, organ and Rhodes, does all the singing, arranged all the strings and produced everything herself as she set out to have complete creative control. It is a rich and rewarding listen with some soaring solos and meticulously crafted grooves that have already won her high praise from those in the know such as Gilles Peterson.

Review: Prepare yourself for a wry chuckle, as we impart the fact that the compilation you see hyperlinked before you was not at all prepackaged, with work cut out for its curators. Rather, it came from the source, having first manifested as a pile of Ghanaian highlife LPs buried at the bottom of DJ Jerry Frempong's wife's garden. Frempong is the son of one of one of the most prominent former Ghanaian-British label owners, Anthony Roberts Frempong of Asona Records, whose founding movements in the South East London district of Peckham proved highly popular helping disseminate highlife music in the English capital. BBE Music owner Pete Adarkwah caught wind of the serendipitous discovery and approached Jerry to discuss the reissue of this historic catalogue, which you hear here. The sweetest of early and untrodden highlife highlights are heard here, including sparklers by Kantata, Jewel Ackah, Sam Yeboah, Mr Cee and even Thomas Frempong himself.

Review: Compared by some to the likes of Crosby, Stills and Nash or Richie Havens, brothers Will and James Ragar present rich, calming and subtly seductive folk-soul that could almost belong in a bygone era. If it didn't sound so utterly timeless - a great example of why unplugged sounds seem to have such a long half-life. As a record, this is a great accompaniment to Will & James Ragar's startling, stop-you-dead-with-serenity debut album, One, which first landed in 1980. But The Acoustic Album takes that tried and true blueprint and then delves deeper into the soothing-yet-aching, sublimely heartbreaking and life affirming formula. 16 tracks written between the late-1970s and early-1990s, recorded in 2016 in one seamless session, each sounds as beautiful, poignant and essential as the next.
