Review: Blue Note's Classic Vinyl series is about reissuing vital jazz records on heavyweight vinyl with all new mastering by Kevin Gray of Coherant Audio. Next to get the special treatment it deserves is Herbie Hancock's 1965 classic Maiden Voyage, which is some of the most evocative jazz to have ever been recorded. Net to Hancock, the players were all either present or past members of Miles Davis' quintet, so made for a heavy line-up. Hancock's impressionistic style is here for all to hear with the sublime compositions of 'Dolphin's Dance' and 'Maiden Voyage' and more tumultuous sounds of 'The Eye Of The Hurricane' some of the highlights.

Review: Speak Like A Child by Herbie Hancock is a groundbreaking album that defies categorization, blending elements of post-bop, modal jazz, and funk into a cohesive and forward-thinking sound only to be slotted into a wide spanning genre like Jazz-Fusion. The title track, 'Speak Like A Child', is a standout composition that highlights Hancock's signature piano playing, characterized by its lyrical melodies and inventive harmonies. The album features intricate arrangements and complex rhythms, with each track offering a unique sonic journey for the listener. Hancock's ability to push the boundaries of traditional jazz while maintaining a deep respect for the genre's roots is clear throughout the album. 'Speak Like A Child' remains a landmark recording in Hancock's discography, cementing his status as one of the most influential figures in modern jazz.

Review: The Three Sounds, one of Blue Note's most productive acts, evolved significantly by 1970. Under the leadership of pianist Gene Harris, the trio welcomed bassist Henry Franklin and drummer Carl Burnett into its ranks, infusing their blues and gospel foundations with a funkier, more vibrant rhythm. This shift is brilliantly captured in Live at the 'It Club', a rousing live recording that highlights their transformation. The record demonstrates how the trio, especially through Burnett's drumming and Franklin's basslines, pushed their sound into funkier territories while maintaining their soulful hard-bop roots. The rhythm section's infectious groove drives the music, giving it a loose, swinging feel where the groove is paramount. Tracks like 'Funky Pullett' and 'Love for Sale' showcase this new dynamic, where the interplay between the trio adds layers of grit and soul to their performances. Live at the 'It Club' remains a thoroughly enjoyable listen with the trio's unique blend of soul-jazz with a fresh, funky twist proudly presented.

Review: Released in 1966, Joe Henderson's Mode For Joe is a captivating jazz work that showcases his unparalleled skill and artistry as a saxophonist and composer. It came at a time when Henderson was at the peak of his creative powers and leading a stellar ensemble that included Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, and Bobby Hutcherson. From the infectious groove of 'A Shade of Jade' to the haunting beauty of 'Black,' each track offers a mesmerising blend of intricate melodies and vibrant improvisation. Henderson's rich tone and expressive phrasing command attention throughout and it is that which makes Mode For Joe such a well-regarded work that still holds great value today.

Review: Andrew Hill's debut album first came to the jazz giant Blue Note Records in 1963, but it wasn't until almost two decades later in 1980 when the titanic 'Dance With Death' laid down the pianist's existential side. A six-track meander through melodic post-bop, high-note ivory-tinkings, and an unmistakable focus on swing as its rhythmic base, this is almost certainly an unforgettable brush with the other side. Hill's piano is muted yet stark, providing a neatly blue counterpoint to the stereoized and doubled-up trumpet parts played by Charles Tolliver and Joe Farrell.

Review: Jutta Hipp's At The Hickory House Vol. 1 is a window into a world where jazz piano can swing without fanfare and charm without overstatement. Recorded live in 1956, it captures a moment in time where Hipp, a little-known German transplant to New York, performed with bassist Peter Ind and drummer Ed Thigpen in a tight, energetic trio format. Hipp's lightly-swinging style moves effortlessly through bebop themes and standards, showing a deftness that feels unforced and natural, with just the right amount of flair. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition is about the purity of soundimono, all-analogue, and mastered from the original tapes by Kevin Gray. The 180g pressing at Optimal guarantees that every note rings out with clarity, allowing listeners to experience Hipp's playing as it was meant to be heard. It's as close to stepping into that intimate club setting as you'll get without a time machine. There's a reason this release still resonates: the understated brilliance of a pianist who never quite got the limelight she deserved, but certainly made a lasting impression on those who tuned in.

Review: Horace Parlan struck out in style as a bandleader in 1960 with a swathe of albums for Blue Note, amongst which was this dazzling display with his quintet. Parlan was notable as a pianist with a handicap in his hand which gave his playing a distinct cadence, and it certainly never held him back. With Tommy and Stanley Turrentine on trumpet and tenor sax respectively, George Tucker on bass and Al Harewood on drums, Speaking' My Piece' breezes through six light and mellow pieces, faithfully repressed by one of the most important labels in all of jazz history.

Review: Blue Note first delivered Horace Silver's Silver Serenade in 1964, adding yet once more to their precious collection of sonorous soul jazz metals. With Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Junior Cook on tenor saxophone, Gene Taylor on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums, the natural scarcity of this serenade is a cultivated one, not spooned; Silver's naturalistic trumpet sounds carpal and easy, dancing brightly against clear, impeccably recorded contrapuntal movements by Brooks and Taylor.

Next up is Freddie Hubbard's Blue Spirits, which was his label debut back in 1950 and saw the prodigious trumpeter kick off what was an astonishing run of records. He was joined by a wealth of talents such as James Spaulding on alto saxophone and flute, Joe Henderson on tenor, Kiane Zawadi on euphonium and Clifford Jarvis on drums, and Big Black on congas. Between them, they provide a rich textured album full of dynamic horns and evocative originals.

Review: American Bobbi Humphrey is one of the most well loved jazz flautists. She turned out plenty of vibrant albums, none less so than this, Fancy Dancer, which was her fifth. It came on Blue Note in 1975 and is full of all killer no filler gold. It also saw her, along with producers the Mizell Brothers aka Larry and Fonce, come up with a fresh new largely instrumental funk sound. Weaving in everything from world music to soul-jazz to club music to pop, it's a widescreen sound that is packed with uplifting flute from Humphrey and lush production that reveals something new with each listen.

Review: Bobby Hutcherson's Total Eclipse is a seminal work in the post-bop jazz genre. Released in 1968, the album showcases Hutcherson's masterful vibraphone playing and his innovative approach to composition which creates a sense of mystery and wonder. 'Herzog' is a up-tempo number, with Hutcherson's vibraphone taking a more prominent role. The track features some blistering solos from Hutcherson and his fellow musicians, including pianist Herbie Hancock and bassist Ron Carter. 'Matrix' is a complex and challenging piece that showcases Hutcherson's experimental side. The track features a variety of odd time signatures and dissonant harmonies, but Hutcherson's playing is always melodic and accessible. 'Same Shame' is a more traditional jazz ballad, with Hutcherson's vibraphone playing taking a more subdued role. The track is a showcase for Hutcherson's lyrical and sensitive playing. The album closes with 'Pompeian,' a haunting and atmospheric piece that recalls the title track. Total Eclipse is a masterpiece of post-bop jazz.

Released originally in 1966, the record showcases Hutcherson's mastery of the vibraphone and how he effortlessly weaves intricate melodies with a vibrant rhythmic pulse. Amongst Bobby Hutcherson's imperious discography lies this collaboration with tenor sax, flute and oboe virtuoso Harold Land, originally released on Blue Note in 1971. San Francisco is notable for the shift Hutcherson and Land took away from the common hard bop style they were best known for, heading towards the fruitful pastures of jazz fusion. As well as the lead men, special credit goes to the rhythm section of John Williams on bass and Mickey Roker on drums, holding down some sturdy grooves for the duration.

Review: Harking yet another Tone Poet 2024 edition to come, comes this new forthcoming reissue from the esteemed master drummer Elvin Jones: Poly-Currents. After his six years with the seminal John Coltrane Quartet, Jones signed with Blue Note in 1968 and began building his own career as a bandleader. His first two albums for the label were spare trio outings - Puttin' It Together and The Ultimate - both featuring saxophonist Joe Farrell and bassist Jimmy Garrison. For 1969's unfettered post-bop exploration Poly-Currents, Jones expanded his ensemble with additional woodwinds and percussion while still maintaining spacious realms for the musicians to delve into on modal band member originals including 'Agenda,' 'Agappe Love,' 'Mr. Jones,' and 'Whew'. Jones is joined throughout by a cast that includes Farrell on tenor saxophone, English horn and flutes, George Coleman on tenor saxophone, Pepper Adams on baritone saxophone, Fred Tompkins on flute, Wilbur Little on bass and Cuban conguero Candido Camero.

Review: Thad Jones' The Magnificent Thad Jones is a stunning album that beautifully showcases the beauty of hard bop. Released in 1956, it reflects the era's evolving jazz landscape, influenced by modern jazz pioneers like Horace Silver and Miles Davis. The album's tracks, including original compositions like 'Billy-Boo' and 'Thedia,' exude a relaxed yet lively vibe, typical of hard bop. Jones' trumpet work shines throughout, displaying a remarkable blend of relaxation and intensity in his solos. The ensemble's chemistry, especially between Detroit-raised musicians like pianist Barry Harris and Jones, is palpable, supported by the solid foundation laid by Percy Heath and Max Roach. Rudy Van Gelder's recording in Hackensack, New Jersey, harnasses the warmth and depth of Jones' trumpet sound, adding to the album's allure. The Magnificent Thad Jones is a timeless gem that continues to enchant jazz enthusiasts with its impeccable execution and rich musicality.

Review: Cliff Craft is a standout gem in Blue Note's 1500 series and one of the rarest treasures. This superb album features Clifford Jordan on tenor sax, alongside Art Farmer (trumpet), Sonny Clark (piano), George Tucker (bass), and Louis Hayes (drums). It's a smooth, soulful journey that captivates from the first note. The album opens with Jordan's composition 'Laconia,' setting the tone with a relaxing, immersive sound. Jordan's craftsmanship shines throughout, especially on 'Soul-Lo Blues,' a bluesy, enjoyable tune that highlights his exceptional talent. The title track, Cliff Craft, is a fast-tempo, hard-bop piece that showcases Jordan's rich tenor sound and the superb rhythm section. Side-2 kicks off with 'Confirmation,' a medium-tempo Bird tune that features laid-back solos from Jordan and Farmer. Clark's smooth, flowing solo adds to the track's charm. 'Sophisticated Lady,' a beautiful ballad by Duke Ellington, stands out as a favorite slow tune. The album concludes with the driving energy of Parker and Gillespie's 'Anthropology,' leaving you wanting more. Cliff Craft is one of the finest Blue Note records ever made.

All of his many themes and conceptual notions get distilled into a comprehensive yet accessible 10-track record with nods to John Coltrane and Abdullah Ibrahim amongst others, but also cultural references to the sounds of the South African landscape. Many of the country's most talented young musicians play on the record including saxophonist Linda Sikhakhane, trumpeter Robin Fassie Kock and vibraphonist Dylan Tabisher.

It was a post bob record that has rather remained under the radar in the years since, but will still cost you a pretty penny if you can find a second hand copy. The Tone Poet serve brings it back to the fore with a deluxe reissue package that allows the tunes to really shine. Jackie wrote two of them while Sonny Clark write three and one is a J. Latouche and V. Duke collaboration. The record was recorded on September 28, 1962 and is one of the more traditional records in McLean's oeuvre.

Review: Jackie McLean's Let Freedom Ring (1962) marks a pivotal moment in his career, where he boldly steps into uncharted territory, blending hard bop with avant-garde elements. The album, recorded at Van Gelder Studio, features McLean on alto sax, supported by Walter Davis Jr. on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. The track 'Omega' stands out for its innovative approach, blending syncopated bass and piano rhythms with sharp, high-register saxophone lines. The song shifts effortlessly between tempos, showcasing the tight interplay between McLean and his band, particularly Higgins' relentless drumming and Davis' rhythmic accents. While 'Melody for Melonae' often receives attention for its emotive power, 'Omega' exemplifies McLean's forward-thinking vision, offering a spacious and harmonically rich canvas that predates many later "modern" jazz experiments. The album's overarching theme of "freedom" resonates on multiple levelsimusical, expressive, and perhaps even socialireflecting McLean's journey beyond traditional hard bop into a more liberated, dissonant sound. McLean's collaboration with Blue Note during this period produced a series of groundbreaking records, with Let Freedom Ring standing as a testament to his willingness to challenge conventions while staying rooted in the vibrant energy of jazz.

Review: Alto saxophonist Jackie McLean's 1960s output ran the gamut from hard bop to the avant-gard, with his 1964 post-bop dates It's Time! and Action splitting the difference. Now reissued for Blue Note's Tone Poet series, this reissue of the latter LP follows up Rudy Van Gelder's 2004 curator's edition; McLean's playing is lithe and limber here, piquing out from each mix - from the opening fan-outs of 'Plight' to the continual peacockings of 'I Hear A Rhapsody' - as if to suggest that McLean himself knows that his instrument resounds at the exact high frequency that naturally commands human attention. With the Tone Poet series primed for audiophiles, you're in for a treat.

Review: As fast-rising underground stars in their own right, you'd expect any collaborative album from soul-fired South London singer/songwriter/beat-maker Tom Misch and prolific jazz drummer Yussef Dayes (best known for his now long-running collaboration with Kamaal Williams) to be rather good. "What Kinda Music" is, with the pair mixing and mangling elements of soul, jazz-funk, electronica and jazz, a set that defies easy categorisation. Both musicians exceed themselves throughout, with tipsy electronics, sweeping strings, bass, effects-laden guitars, woozy synth lines and Misch's heartfelt, soul-flecked vocals offering a perfect foil for Dayes' loose-limbed, headline-grabbing drumming.

Review: Blue Jazz's on going Tone Poet Series - which is about reissuing classic jazz on heavyweight, audiophile quality vinyl - throws out another gem here with the Hank Mobley classic Soul Station. Hank started out as a pianist before moving to the tenor sax aged 16. He put plenty of emotion and intensity into every note he played and during the years 1955-1970 he fronted more than 25 Blue Note albums as well as being a sideman on many others. This record captures him at the peak of his powers with a lyrical playing style and length, passionate solos.

Review: Hank Mobley might not be so well known among the greats of saxophonic jazz, but that probably boils down to him making No Room For Squares. Indeed, only the coolest of the menthol-cool were permitted access to this album and Mobley's performances at the time of its release; this was undoubtedly a self-selecting process ensured by the garnering of some of the hottest talents of the day on band duties, including Herbie Hancock on piano, Donald Byrd on trumpet, and Butch Warren on bass. Moving like an effortless meandering current slinking downstream, the six tracks on this vinyl reissue put on effortless instrumental airs.

Review: Few jazz saxophonists were as majestic as Hank Mobley. He had a unique sound that sat in between the rawness of John Coltrane and the smoothness of Stan Getz and released a number of now-classic albums. Soul Station has already had the Tone Poet Series treatment and next up to get remastered and come on new audiophile vinyl is A Caddy For Daddy. He had already been a But Note artist for some 10 years when he recorded this one in 1965. It finds him alongside a first-class sextet with Lee Morgan on trumpet, Bob Cranshaw on bass, McCoy Tyner on piano, Billy Higgins on drums and Curtis Fuller on trombone.

Review: Recorded in the early hours of Good Friday 1960, Good Friday Blues captures the spontaneous brilliance of The Modest Jazz Trio, led by Jim Hall on guitar, Red Mitchell on piano and Red Kelly on bass. Originally intended to record a single track for a blues anthology, the session evolved into a full album as the trio's effortless chemistry and musical inspiration turned the night into a memorable session. The resulting six tracks include Mitchell's originals and interpretations of standards like 'Willow Weep For Me' and 'I Remember You.' The absence of drums highlights Hall's delicate guitar tones and Mitchell's surprising piano talents, with Kelly's bass providing a solid foundation. One of the more underrated jazz albums for the time, this reissue should help catapult it to the level of attention it deserves.

Review: Lee Morgan's Search For The Land is a soulful exploration of jazz that now gets reissued as part of this classic series son the iconic Blue Note. Released first in 1966, the record showcases Morgan's virtuosity as a trumpeter and composer. With a lineup featuring heavyweights like Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, each track is a journey through intricate melodies and dynamic rhythms. From the exhilarating title track to the introspective 'Melancholee,' Morgan's next level improvisation and emotive phrasing shine throughout. Review: Following the runaway success of 1964's The Sidewinder, Alfred Lion continued to record Lee Morgan in pursuit of another boogaloo hit. While subsequent albums like 1965's The Rumproller, The Gigolo, and Cornbread didn't match the same commercial heights, they showcased Morgan's musical prowess. Recorded over two summer dates, The Gigolo features Morgan leading a quintet with Wayne Shorter, Harold Mabern, Bob Cranshaw, and Billy Higgins. This set of swaggering hard bop includes Morgan's originals like the groovy Yes I Can, No You Can't, up-tempo gems such as 'Speedball,' and the stirring 11-minute title track. The album closes with a lush arrangement of 'You Go To My Head,' adding a sensual sway to the collection. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition presents the album in stereo, all-analogue, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal, preserving Morgan's dynamic performances and the quintet's vibrant interplay for contemporary listeners and ardent vinyl enthusiasts.

Review: Lee Morgan's Taru, recorded in 1968 but released in 1980, showcases the trumpeter at a pivotal point, exploring a variety of styles with a stellar band. This album is a gem, featuring George Benson's inspired solos on three tracks and Bennie Maupin's debut collaboration with Morgan, setting the stage for future classics like Caramba! and Live at the Lighthouse. The rhythm section, consisting of John Hicks on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums, delivers a masterclass in hard bop. The album kicks off with 'Avotcja One,' a modal jazz piece that sets a dynamic tone. 'Get Yourself Together' charges forward with hard bop energy, while 'Haeschen' and 'Taru, What's Wrong With You?' showcase Morgan's ability to craft beautiful ballads. The gospel-tinged 'Dee Lawd' and the funky boogaloo 'Durem' add stylistic variety, making the six-song set a rich display of jazz. This Blue Note Tone Poet Series reissue is a true audiophile delight. Produced by Joe Harley and mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog tapes, the 180g vinyl pressing at RTI ensures pristine sound quality. The deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket adds a touch of elegance.
