Os Rouxinois - "Um Balanco Pra Voce" (2:52)
Wal Sant'ana - "O Viajante" (3:09)
Review: It was the iconic Copacabana Records that put out this classic MPB back in 1964. That makes 'Um Balanco pra voce' by Os Rouxinois one of the oldest releases in Mr Bongo's Brazil45 series and it is also one of the best. Arnaud Rodrigues wrote the tune which is a superb mix of exotic funk, bossa nova rhythms and quirky melodies from a five-track 7" of tunes that the band originally used to play on TV. On the other side, 'O Viajante' is the sort of irresistibly sunny sound that quickly wins your heart and is sure to light up any dancefloor.

Jose Prates - "Nana Imboro" (4:28)
Wroblewski Jazz Quintet - "Nana Imboro" (3:15)
Review: The 62nd single in Mr Bongo's long-running Brazil 45s series is notable for containing Jose Prates' "Nana Imboro", a deep, hypnotic and intoxicating samba cut that was initially recorded and released way back in 1958. Relatively slow and steady by samba standards, its chanted refrain is thought to be the inspiration for Jorge Ben's much better known "Mas Que Nada". Wisely, Mr Bongo has backed Prates' sublime original with a 1960 cover by obscure Polish outfit Wroblewski Jazz Quintet. This dispenses with the chanting, instead increasing the number of intertwined horn parts. Given that original copies of the rare Polish EP it first appeared on will set you back serious money, it's great to see this fine cover included here.

Review: Osaka-based jazz-funk band Wa Yo Set is dropping this new 7" single as a way of offering fans a sneak peek of another new album project they have coming up this year. The A-side features a jazzy, acoustic, and danceable instrumental cover of MISIA's 'Tsutsumikomu Youni,' which has been skilfully reimagined in the band's signature style. On the B-side, the original track 'R308' delivers a breezy summer vibe and closes out a tasty release that showcases the band's ever-evolving sound. It has more than got us interested in hearing the full length that is soon to come.

Airport Love Theme (2:43)
Afro Sam (2:59)
Review: Waldir Calmon's 'Airport Love Theme' has that special appeal that makes it a true gem. Sampled by Madlib on the Madvillain album track 'Curls', this lounge classic from Calmon's 1970 Waldir Calmon E Seus Multisons LP on Copacabana exudes nostalgic charm. Despite its unassuming cover, 'Airport Love Theme' delivers a dreamy, feel-good vibe that could soundtrack a perfect world. Afro Son, from the same album, shifts towards a Brazilian-rooted, cinematic groove, reminiscent of Jean Jacques Perrey's E.V.A.. Calmon, a Brazilian music fixture from the 50s to the 80s, who collaborated with legends like Tom Jobim and Joao Gilberto and left a unique musical legacy that lives on in these timeless tracks.

Review: Paul Murphy's Jazz Room Records serve up two underground dance floor hits from the London circuit here. Latin supergroup Wild And Infectious's 'Caliente' takes care of the a-side and has banging piano riffs and heavy bass laid down by Descarga originator Cachao, all run through with some superb driving vibes from Tany Gil with a big percussion meltdown from Walfredo De Los Reyes added for good measure. ON the reverse, The Vienna Art Orchestra serve up a great new version of a Bud Powell classic.

The Kevin Fingier Collective - "Cocktail De Medianoche" (2:43)
Review: Standby for a monster rhythm & blues tune here, and one that transports you to another world courtesy of Diane Ward and Kevin Finigier's sublime collaboration. Ward is an American singer who came up singing gospel in church, which is not a surprise when you hear her raw and visceral delivery here. She spent time living in Argentina which is where she saw Kevin perform and insisted they work together. 'Why Don't You Go Hom' is dripping with emotion, attitude and empowering sounds. On the flip side is 'Cocktail De Medianoche,' a busy mix of bongo, flute, boogaloo sounds, Northern Soul grooves and Latin flair.

Bravo Guaguanco (3:32)
Pa'l Que Lo Quiera Gozar (4:24)
Review: Mexico City-based crate diggers Discodelic Records continue to unearth and reissue rare gems from South America. Their latest pick is, we're reliably informed, one of the "holy grails" of Guaguanco music - an astonishingly hard-to-find "45" from Nicaraguan band Warumo, whose members had previously played in some of the country's most popular salsa bands. 'Bravo Guaguanco' dates from 1977 and is simply insatiable - a heavy, up-tempo workout in which salsa style vocals and instrumentation (think twinkling piano riffs, heavy horns and fast-fingered bass) rise above a killer Guaguanco rhythm laden with heady Latin percussion. Original B-side 'Pa'l Que Lo Quiera Gozar' is equally as good, with a more laidback, breezy and psychedelic-tinged sound.

Submission (Kenny Dope remix) (3:53)
Review: Tyrone Washington's 'Submission' is a timeless gem that gets pressed up to 7" here both in original form but also with the masterful Kenny Dope remix on the flip. The A-side is a hard edge jazz number with squealing reeds and tumbling drums, chord stabs and an insistent and rather dark energy. Kenny makes it into a much more smooth number with drums that nails you to the floor. The sax stabs are more muted and fade into the background as the menacing chords come to the fore. Two vital tunes for the collection for sure.

Straight Love Affair (3:35)
Review: Monterey was a previously lost track from Eden Ahbez, a soulful and almost sorrowful slow jam with sensational performances from Lee Pardini on piano and Mando Dorame on tenor sax. The vocals are hauntingly beautiful in contrast to the peppy organ lead 'Straight Love Affair' with its swing leanings. Waterhouse made his name in the Psych scene in California, though you can hear in 'Monterey' that he still keeps his blues sensibilities about him, and this is another welcome addition to the growing pantheon of tributes to Ahbez's material - a much appreciated display of recognition to songwriting brilliance. Just let the wave of sound wash over you.

These four tracks were lifted from the classic library music series known only as 'Sounds Music Album Volume 18', and were made by the library maestro Klaus Weiss, the former jazz drummer who later turned to the trade after falling in with German music publisher Ring Musik. An eerie uncanniness cuts across these instrumentals, as Weiss' drumming provides steady boppage to serene yet dubious backings of strings and synth.

Something of an unheralded modern deep funk classic, it makes perfect sense that Spasibo Records has decided to give it a much-deserved single release. Now the artist is back on home label Piano Piano Sweden with two more gorgeously incident cuts of Library-tinged, warm and fuzzy, festive-feeling piano pieces. 'Asterism Waltz' (Celesta version) is all soft-brushed snares and twinkling keys with emotive, plaintive chords and keys played, as the title suggests on a celesta, which is a transposing instrument that sounds one octave higher than the written pitch. Review: There's a lovely side story to this album, so allow us a moment to divulge (and digress). One From The Heart is 12 songs written by the legendary Tom Waits for the Francis Ford Coppola movie of the same name. It took around one year to record in its entirely, with this taking place at Wally Heider's Studio 3, in Hollywood. The facility also happened to employ a woman called Kathleen Brennan, who would eventually become Waits' wife, the pair meeting during the making of this record.

She would go on to be "an incandescent presence on all songs we work on together," to use his phrasing, and the lady who helped usher in a more experimental period in the master song-man's career. As for this album, things are more traditional than much that came after it, a combination of late night bar jazz, main stage balladry, rock 'n' roll and sexy tunes to fall in love with.

Review: Mal Waldron is a jazz icon to many thanks to him accompanying the likes of Bille Holliday, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus and Jackie McLean among others. He also recorded plenty of solo albums before his death in 2022. But in 1978 he played a legendary and mesmeric live solo piano concert in Grenoble, at the foot of the Alps in France. It was part of the Five Days of Jazz series in the city and it has never before been issued like this. The session includes classic Waldron originals such as 'Soul Eyes' and 'All Alone' as well as plenty of standards like 'You Don't Know What Love Is,' 'It Could Happen to You' and 'I Thought About You.'

Review: The J Jazz Masterclass Series from BBE Music has already served up some real treasure and now as it lands on its 19th release, it serves up some more. This one, Mal Waldron's Reminicent Suite, is a sizeable collab between two giants of jazz, In coming together they cooked up a sublime album alongside a band made up of the very best Japanese jazz musicians of their time. American pianist Mal Waldron and Japanese trumpeter Terumasa Hino released this album in 1973 on the Victor label and is one of several albums of the time that were Japan-only releases. Now it gets a vinyl pressing in the West for the first time ever so do not sleep.

Reminicent Suite: Dig It Deep Down Baby/Echoes/Once More With Feeling
Black Forest
Review: .For the latest volume in the label's essential J-Jazz Masterclass series of reissues, BBE has opted to deliver a new edition of a hard-to-find 1973 collaboration between American pianist Mal Waldron and Japanese trumpeter Terumasa Hino. Originally released only in Japan, it comprises two lengthy compositions (one by each artist) performed by the duo and talented sidemen Isao Suziki (upright bass), Motohiko Hino (drums), Takao Uematsu (alto sax) and Uzi Inamuro (percussion). Waldron's LP-opening composition adds alternating, increasingly hectic solos to a gradually intensifying groove (a formula the storied pianist used extensively during this period of his career), before morphing and mellowing as the suite progresses. Hino's 'Black Forest', meanwhile, is more up-tempo and horn-heavy, with oodles of extra percussion and expressive, mind-mangling solos aplenty.

Review: This reissue from Jazz Room is one from the rather more obscure end of the jazz spectrum but it is well worthy of your time. Johnny Walker - not the same guy as the whisky magnate - recorded this one when he was touring the world with veteran jazz star Lionel Hampton back in 1982. The sounds that defined his signature are drenched in funk with fat beats powering them along. The excellent rhythm section work really shines through here on an album that was originally released on his own Private Press label.

Review: Keyboardist Walter Bishop Jr's Coral Keys album was the second long player to get released on Blue Note. It was a triumph of lush jazz atmospherics with hefty doses of 70s soul, but just two years later he reinvented himself for 1973's Keeper of My Soul, which came deeply entrench in spirituality in part because of his studies with yogi Parmahansa Yogananda. The ambitious record features great work from flautist and sax man Hubert Laws, bassist Gerald Brown and vibraphonist Woody Murray, all of whom serve up myriad free-form passages and plenty of funky interpretations, not least a cover of 'Summertime.' The whole album has been remastered for this pressing and comes with liner notes from Pat Thomas.

Review: The Walter Lang Trio features the eponymous Lang playing piano alongside Thomas Markusson on bass, and Sebastian Merk on drums. They pair light and airy pins with dainty rhythms and an air of performance that brings extra life to these sounds. It makes for a most romantic listen and one that has a warming glow and twinkling stars off in the distance. Starlight Reflections is a loved up jazz sound and the first of two albums with a second one Moonlight Echores to follow soon after on the same label, Jazz Shinsekai.

Review: The Walter Lang Trio has three albums all dropping in pretty quick succession at the start of 2024. They are a virtuoso collective who drop the first two of the three, Moonlight Echoes and Starlight Reflections, on the same day at the end of December while the third, Pure, comes in early spring. This album is another masterful mix of romantic jazz sounds, gentle tinkling piano keys and sublime sophisticated lunge sounds that allow the mind to wander up amongst the stars. Lovely stuff for lovers of all forms of jazz.

Review: Trumpeter, composer and bandleader Nick Walters is back on his own DOT Records with a new record that comes from this newly revived sextet. The group hasn't played together since 2019's LP Active Imagination but hasn't lost any of its magical touch. This new album Marine Moods is inspired by the sea and takes the form of a fantastic contemporary jazz-fusion sound that draws on Afro, modal and spiritual jazz tropes. There are moments of energy such as on 'Gulf Stream' and more dark and hypnotic moments like 'Hydrothermal' as well as raga-curveballs like 'Journey for Joan'. A fine and fresh record indeed.

Review: Since cutting his teeth in the Riot Jazz Brass Band, trumpeter Nick Walters has become a significant player in London's modern jazz scene via his membership of Tenderlonious's Ruby Rushton band and a string of album releases with his own collective, the Paradox Ensemble. Both Walters and his band of collaborators are on fine form on Implicate Order, their third full-length. Positive, energetic and mood-enhancing in tone, the set combines alternately swinging and intense takes on traditional jazz with cuts that variously draw influence from spacey jazz-funk, broken beat and vintage movie soundtracks. It's a fine set all told and includes what we think may be the first example of a jazz accordion solo for some time (and yes, it does sound really good).

Review: This album was recorded in 1979 at Sound Ideas Studio in New York City with some heavyweights of the time all involved. Cedar Walton was on piano, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Bob Berg on tenor saxophone, Sam Jones on bass and Billy Higgins on drums and between them they had a finely tuned jazz sound that brought to life six strong tracks, all composed by Cedar Walton bar their jazz interpretation of the classic standard 'Never Never Land.' The dynamic interplay between the musicians makes this a tight, impactful collection.

Review: Jazz Room Records is back with another high class reissue of an album that is considered to be a grail by those who know. The story goes that back in the late 70s in the Seattle area of the Pacific North West, Danny Ward & Reality were an oft called upon funky jazz collective for anyone throwing college or hardcore funk parties. Rather than just serving up covers of the day's big hits they offered proper musical trips though more considered fair from artists like George Benson. This album catches them at their best on one such mid-week gig in the summer of 1977.

Review: Kamasi Washington's latest effort is a little different from his previous releases, which delighted in taking spiritual and post-bop jazz in a myriad of thrilling new directions. Befitting its status as a soundtrack - the music on Becoming was written to feature on Nadia Hallgren's Netflix documentary of the same name on Michelle Obama - the compositions unveiled by Washington are breezy, accessible and seeped in musical positivity. There are lots of memorable melodic themes throughout the album, with bold and catchy, up-beat jazz numbers being joined by melancholic, contemplative compositions and even nods towards soul-jazz, Motown style soul and cheery jazz-funk.

Review: Already out in the ether since the summer, Kamasi's sprawling three-part jazz opus finally sees the light of vinyl day. Presented on heavyweight vinyl with his striking signature artwork, its delivery befits the album's rave reviews on its original arrival. Highlights, in case you haven't heard it yet, are the awe-inspiring switch from fusion to swing on "The Next Step" the album's overall sparing inclusion of vocal that make "The Rhythm Changes" really stand out and sparkle and the attention to detail on the narrative structure on reprise notes such as "Re Run Home". A must-have for any jazz/Brainfeeder fan.

Review: Virtuoso contemporary jazz star Kamasi Washington got involved with the hit Netflix documentary Becoming right at the early stages. The film is a four time Emmy-nominated glimpse into the life of Michelle Obama, filled with as many profound moments as tender and vulnerable ones. All of those are perfectly translated into gentle jazz, sweeping symphonies and empowering passages of sound that tell a very real story even without seeing the movie. Fans of the Los Angeles saxophonist will recognise a dialling back in the scale of his usual sound, but that is never to the detriment of the work here, which is maybe his most accessible work yet.

Review: One day, Kamasi Washington will be heralded as a genuine musical genius. For now, he's just one of the artists of the moment - a jazz artist whose take on the genre is so wide-ranging and forward-thinking that it defies categorisation. On Fearless Movement, his follow-up to the dazzling and mind-blowing Earth (2015) and Heaven & Earth (2018), Washington heads for the dancefloor, combining his usual jazz, classical and soul influences with lashings of P-funk colour, raps aplenty, and impressive cast-list of guest stars. Andre 3000 reaches for his flute on the decidedly cosmic 'Dream State', old pals Thundercat, Taj Austin and Ras Austin step forth on the brilliant 'Asha The First', and George Clinton and rapper D Smoke light up 'Let's Get Lit'. He even doffs a cap to d&b on future jazz-dance classic 'Prologue'. Immense.

Review: Patty Waters recorded these stunning songs with engineer Steve Atkins in 1970 at the Coast Recordings studio. They have never before been available on vinyl and provide something of a link between her two critically acclaimed ESP-Disk records at the end of the 60's and the music she made after the 90's. Themes of heartbreak, yearning and loneliness all define these songs as they convey the emotions of a lonely 19 year old, as she was when she wrote them. Miles Davis was a huge fan of Patty and this record proves why.

The powerhouse group delivered the intensity of a big band while blending intricate musicianship with electrifying energy and their Night Passage tour, famous for its dynamic visuals with lasers and projections, was the band at their best. The Atlanta Fox Theater show captures remarkable performances of Zawinul's 'Madagascar' and 'Fast City', Pastorius' 'Three Views of a Secret' and Shorter's 'Port of Entry.'
