Review: Famous as the nephew of the world famous sitarist Ravi Shankar, Ananda Shankar carried the torch by contributing several greats to the continuing tide of prog rock and Western electronica. One such project was Sa-Re-Ga Machan, first released in 1981, and which lent a jungle-safari theme to the already established electronic rock fusions he'd laid down on his earlier self-titled record. Seguing through rollicking, schools-out psychedelic odysseys, not to mention humid, wonderfully sublime tropical soundscapes on which we can't tell what's synthetic and what isn't, this is an worthy new reissue from Life Goes On; worth every penny.

Review: Anyone who has followed Emotional Rescue knows it has always does a fine job of documenting pock punk and UK punk dub's early years, in this case showcasing the previously unheralded work of Skinbat Scramble, who emerged from the mundanity of the Home Counties to converge on London during the early 80s. Core members Mark Eason and Fergus Crockford were simultaneously inspired by the speedy punk thills of the Roxy Club and the Two Tone scene of ska and reggae which ran alongside it, as well as counter cultural heroes of the generation before like Gong and Velvet Underground. They got to work distilliing slow tempos, experimental sounds, dub and much more into leftfield rhythms, and while the likes of 'Basement Voltaire' - all echoing electronics, high frequency blips and merciless drum machines - or the Clash-in-dub workout 'North By Northwest' are rooted very much in the Cold War/Thatcher years, their individuality and experimental vibe mean they've endured remarkably well. Review: Sacred Mushroom's debut is a blues-rock gem that shows the raw energy and talent of the Cincinnati-based quintet, led by Larry Goshorn and his brother Danny Goshorn. While their name might hint at psychedelia, the album leans heavily into blues traditions, paired with tight arrangements and flashes of rock ingenuity. Originals like 'Catatonic Lover', have an infectious energy and intricate chord progressions reminiscent of Jefferson Airplane, while 'All Good Things Must End' delivers a soulful Chicago blues waltz enhanced by Rusty Work's spirited harmonica. The funky opener, 'I Don't Like You', brims with dynamic harmonies and sharp guitar work that sets the tone for the album. Covers are equally impressive; their rendition of the Kinks' 'I'm Not Like Everybody Else' adds a fresh, acoustic-electric interplay and timeless melodic charm. On the extended 'Lifeline' and the driving 'Mean Old World,' the band channels the electric blues of Fleetwood Mac and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. Review: Often credited alongside the likes of Testament and Death Angel as one of the most integral groups of the thrash metal second wave, Phoenix, Arizona's Sacred Reich originally disbanded in 2000, four years on from their at-the-time swan song fourth LP Heal. While the band would reform in 2006 to embark on numerous legacy tours, it would be 23 years until they'd return to the studio to deliver their 2019 comeback Awakening (which marked the first recorded output without original guitarist Jason Rainey who tragically passed away in 2020). It's due to this persistent reforming and adding to their legacy, that in hindsight, Heal has absorbed a stable credence for serving as the initial full stop on the band's original tenure, complete with the OG line up. Reissued on lush red & orange marbled vinyl, the ever-reliable archive keepers at Metal Blade continue to remain as on the pulse as ever with regard to the insatiable appetites of collector's constantly scanning label rosters for overdue represses.
