Review: Second time around for Sneaker Pimps' Six Underground, the lesser-celebrated follow-up to the duo's renowned 'Spin Spin Sugar' single (famous, of course, because of Armand Van Helden's influential 'Dark Garage' remix). While the revisions included here - all initially released in 1996 - did not make as big an impression, all four have stood the test of time impressively. The headline attraction is a pair of Two Lone Swordsmen rubs, which are amongst the earliest reworks Weatherall and Tenniswood laid down under the alias. The vocal and instrumental takes are low slung trip-hop tracks overlaid with heady electronic elements. Elsewhere, Nellee Hooper channels the spirit (and sound) of his work with Massive Attack, and Hull boys Fila Brazillia lay down a typically deep, dubby and slowly evolving downtempo workout.

Review: While born in Jamaica, like many of the Windrush Generation Robert Thompson AKA Dandy made his name in the UK, subsequently making some of the earliest - and most successful - British Ska records with the assistance of Australian entrepreneur and Crossbow Records founder Millie Small. This fine compilation, one of the first to showcase the work of a UK-based ska star, tells the story of Thompson's work in 1964 and '65, much of it alongside fellow vocalist Keith Foster as Sugar N Dandy. There's much to enjoy throughout, with highlights including the organ solo-sporting delight of 'Oh Dear', the fuzzy jazziness of 'I'm Not Crying Now', the Mod-friendly 'Blues Got a Hold On Me' and his superb ska cover of Hermans Hermits' hit 'I'm Into Something Good'.

Review: .While Brazilian guitarist Fabiano Do Nascimento and American saxophonist Sam Gendel first met and played together at the dawn of the last decade - at a Los Angeles cafe both used to frequent, fact fans - it was only last year that they decided to collaborate on a release. The Room, the resultant album, was reportedly recorded in two days in a studio in the Californian countryside. It's an undeniably magical and sun-soaked affair, with Gendel teasing fluttering, flute-esque improvisations from his soprano saxophone while Do Nascimento delivers impeccable, finger-picking meditations on his seven-string acoustic guitar. The latter is undoubtedly a virtuoso with his own distinct style - a Brazilian take on classical guitar, incorporating nods to lesser-known regional music - but instinctively knows when to step back and allow Gendel the limelight. Impressive stuff all told.

Review: Over the last couple of years, author Justin Hopper has joined folk musician Sharron Kraus and vintage synthesizer fetishists Belbury Poly on stage to narrate sections of his 2017 novel "Old Weird Albion" - a "poetical, autobiographical and psycho-geographical account" of his experiences at Chanctonbury Ring in West Sussex. This album is, in effect, an extended re-recording of those performances, with Hopper reading choice excerpts from his book over an inspired fusion of traditional folk tropes - think recorder, flute, and drifting female vocals - atmospheric field recordings and 1970s style electronic instrumentation. Given that these synths have largely been used to re-record tudor style Baroque tunes (think "Greensleeves" and you're close), the results are not only delightfully eccentric but also admirably unique.

Review: Any aspiring rocker worth their salt in Australia is likely familiar with Steve Kilbey from his work being the lead singer of 'Under The Milky Way' hitmakers The Church. Here he combines with The Go-Between' Grant McLennan to make the great supergroup Jack Frost. The collection includes a remastering and reissue of their two studio albums: The Snow Job (1995) and the self-titled debut (1991) - plus bonus material. It's stacked with classics, but 'Birdowner', which evokes Morrison Hotel-era Jim Morrion, is a huge standout. As is Civil War Lament', but for different reasons: this goes into acoustic psych-folk territory, leaning towards some Pink Floyd styles. Elsewhere, 'Trapeze Boy' conveys memories of listening to Comet Gain, who may well have been influenced by the underrated, masterful Jack Frost.

Review: Given that Gilles Peterson and Stuart Baker's Cuba: Music and Revolution - Culture Clash in Havana is one of the standout compilations of 2021, hopes are naturally sky-high for this speedy sequel. Like its predecessor, volume 2 focuses on music and made and released on the Caribbean island between 1975 and '85, this time round largely focusing on rare fusions of salsa, Latin jazz, disco, soul and funk, mostly licensed from records that have never been available outside Cuba. It's another stunning selection all told, with highlights including the heady Cuban disco/salsa fusion of Orquesta Los Van Van, the fiery disco-funk of FA 5, the heavily percussive hedonism of Luis Carobonell and the fuzzy psychedelic rock of Grupo De Experimentacion Sonora Del ICAIC. In a word: essential.

Review: Although widely celebrated as a pioneering and influential work, the original Japanese version of Ryuichi Sakamoto's third solo album, Hidari Ude No Yume, has long been hard-to-find. Helpfully We Want Sounds has secured the rights to reissue it in Europe, pairing the Yellow Magic Orchestra man's original set - complete with sung and spoken Japanese vocals - with a partner disc of entirely instrumental versions. Musically, it remains as vibrant and otherworldly as it did at the turn-of-the-80s, with the great Sakamoto combining elements of jazz, traditional Japanese music, new age, ambient and new-wave with rubbery synth-pop and proto-electro sounds. The fact that it still sounds like nothing else is not only proof of Sakamoto's genius, but also why you genuinely need it in your life.

Review: Ryuichi Sakamoto has penned many soundtracks over the years, but few are as stirring, tender and emotionally laden as his soundtrack to 2021 Chinese movie 'Love After Love'. The film is described as an "erotic romance drama" set in the 1930s, about a young woman who travels to Hong Kong to further her education, but ends up working for her aunt, seducing "rich and powerful men". Sakamoto's score mirrors the unfurling, highly emotive drama, using reverb-laden piano pieces and string-laden orchestral movements to wring maximum emotion from each scene. It's a brilliant score all told and undoubtedly one of the former Yellow Orchestra Man's greatest works for cinema - and that's saying something!

Review: Saltpig are the cross-continental psychedelic duo of US singer and multi-instrumentalist Mitch Davis and Italian drummer Fabio Alessandrini (ex-Annihilator), and together they've crafted a self-titled debut as tart as their moniker. Pulling from retro psych fuzzed out bluesy desert rock, yet interspliced with avant-garde prog noodling, and even forays into the sludgy, heftier side of proto-doom metal; the pair conjure a Venn Diagram style of intersectionality between the genre's early roots and more menacing modernised approach. Lengthy instrumental dirges are broken up by Davis' esoteric croon, while a lysergic hue weaves around the hypnagogic sonic tapestries like the passing of initial nausea before the overwhelming come up.

Review: Before recording As Above So Below, her second album, Sampa Tembo decided to move back to her native Zambia after years spent living in Australia. Reconnected with her cultural roots, she set about making an album that brilliantly blends hip-hop and 21st century electronics with native Zambian musical forms and hat-tips to psych, blues and folk. It would be fair to say that it works - and then some - with her chosen lyrical themes and an impressive array of guests (Kojey radikal, Chef 187, Witch, Denzel Curry and Joey Bada$$ included) further enhancing the offering. It sounds and feels like a genuinely landmark album - something that creates something genuinely new and fresh out of disparate musical cultures. In other words, it's a triumph.

Review: Pharoah Sanders' Izipho Zam (My Gifts) was first recorded in 1969 but wasn't released until 1973; a monumental yet, despite the name, little-received jazz work, we can still hear the legendary jazz-musical theocrat push the boat ever further out psychically and sonically here. Produced by Stanley Cowell and Charles Tolliver's Strata-East label, the album was recorded at Town Sound Studios, two years after Sanders' mentor John Coltrane's death. Coltrane's passing marked a significant turning point for Sanders, who saw in the saxophonist the unopened buds of a spiritual path for music, expressible in jazz. The Zulu phrase used in the title is regularly heard in Mozambique, Eswatini and Zimbabwe, reflecting the cultural emphasising of gifting in East Africa.

Review: Satellites' self-titled 2020 debut album won plenty of plaudits, with critics the world over hailing the Tel Aviv-based band's blend of vintage, Turkish style psychedelic folk-rock and dancefloor adjacent grooves indebted to funk, soul and disco. Aylar, the six-piece's belated sequel, continues in this vein, with the band arguably being bolder with their musical choices. For proof, check the cosmic strut of opener 'Tisaldi Mehmet Elmi', a psych-funk transformation of a traditional Turkish folk song, the low-slung grooves and sweet retro-organ melodies of 'Midnight Sweat', the gritty, thrusting and hallucinatory 'Yok Yok' and the future dancefloor anthem that is psychedelic Turkish disco gem 'Zuluf Dokolmus Yuze'.

Review: Japanese artist Sawako returns to 12K with her first new release on the label since 2008's Bitter Sweet (12k1047). Sawako's sound, fragile and amorphous, may be made up of digital elements but takes on a humble, human sound here. Here she collapses eight years of memories and recordings into layers of sound intended to "open the body to the celestial world". Using generative compositional methods she recorded fragments of melodies on days of full moons, new moons, planetary conjunctions and around other notable events happening in the skies. She references orbits, sound waves and light, with suitably dream like results.

Review: Silentes has so far supplied little information about the artist known as Scapular, or for that matter his debut album on their 13 sub-label, which is called Devotional. Here's what we know: it was recorded in Mexico City in late 2019 and early 2020 by a hitherto unknown producer who goes by the name of J. Sanchez. Musically, it's a pleasingly opaque and subtly-varied affair built around gaseous ambient electronics, chopped and processed samples (think field recordings, spoken word snippets, and heavenly choirs), crunchy electronic rhythms, hazy dub techno textures, and unsurprisingly spacey grooves. It's hard to get a handle on, but that's part of the fun. Most importantly, the debutant artist has delivered a set that surprises and delights at every turn.

Review: Arriving almost exactly three months after its predecessor, HiFi Sean and David McAlmont's third collaborative full-length is lightly a conceptual flip side to 2024's Daylight - a "dusk till dawn" night drive sequel, as they put it. To provide a distinctly different sonic sheen to the album that preceded it, the duo has reached for slow, soft-touch grooves, dreamy textures, bubbly electronics, strobe-lit synths and musical motifs forged in darker, if still colourful, tones. Review: Deep Valley is a new collaborative work by Australian artists Seaworthy aka Cameron Webb and Matt Rosner and they came together for it during a week-long residency at Bundanon Art Museum in New South Wales. The property which was gifted to the Australian public by artists Arthur and Yvonne Boyd in the 1990s offers a unique landscape along the Shoalhaven River and is surrounded by sandstone cliffs and diverse wildlife. Drawing inspiration from Boyd's belief that "you can't own a landscape," Deep Valley combines the inspiration of that setting with environmental recordings, guitars, piano, and electronic processing all of which aim to highlight the transient nature of ecosystems and encourage you to reconnect with the sounds of nature.

Review: Orb offshoot project Sedibus has proved popular with fans for two reasons: it reunites Alex Paterson with Andy Falconer, who worked extensively with the Orb between 1990 and 1994, and the music they make recalls some of the pair's best moments of that period - albeit with a quite different instrumentation. Seti, the pair's sophomore album, has been described by their label, Cooking Vinyl, as "ambient unplugged". That only tells half the story. While it does boast all manner of acoustic instruments - sitar, guitar, piano, tabla and other percussion - it also features Paterson's trademark spoken word snippets and the dreamiest of electronic chords and aural textures. With beautiful, immersive and typically lengthy compositions, it feels and sounds like a grown-up version of the Orb's mightiest early 90s work.

Review: Seefeel's new album Everything Squared marks their first release since 2011, on which the "first ever shoegaze-electronica band" flex a positively retroactive take on the sound they sired. From the opening 'Sky Hooks' - a track which weaves an oxbow shape through small bankside groves of nymphlike-vocals in the peaks, and determined plods through ambient dub subterrains in the troughs - to the penultimate 'Hooked Paw', a similarly dubby but comparatively gnosis - a sophistic dream-blear for vocals and detuned atmoss at 140bpm, recalling the surreal ambient fort-das of HTRK or Clouds - this is not a record to be listened to lightly, despite its comeback status.

Review: Rebecca Taylor arrives at third album A Complicated Woman in a very different place to where she was before the release of her previous full-length, the Mercury Prize-nominated Prioritise Pleasure. Now a bona-fide pop star, the South Yorkshire chanteuse now has to deal with heightened expectations and her own experience of fame. By the sound of A Complicated Woman, she's handling both with aplomb. That's not to say that the lyrics avoid difficult subjects - her own worries remain front and centre - but the delightfully grandiose production, extensive use of choirs and orchestras, and Taylor's own penchant for penning stadium-sized sing-alongs deliver a maximal pop gem fitting her genuine star status. Rotherham's finest has never sounded so good (or, it should be added, explicit - there are some genuinely adult themes on display).

Review: Although his solo work has not been as celebrated as those of some of his Radiohead bandmates - most notably Thom Yorke - Philip Selway has nevertheless delivered a handful of excellent albums since making his debut in 2010. A songwriter since his youth, Selway often offers up far more 'traditional' material than one might expect (his debut, for example, was heavily acoustic). Interestingly, he doesn't drum on 'Strange Dance', his first album since 2017; instead, he sings, produces (Valentina Magaletti takes the sticks instead), and conjures a distinctive, effects-laden sound that he has described in interviews as "a Carole King record if she asked Daphne Oram to produce it". In effect, that means glassy-eyed vocals, prominent drums, guitar, bass and strings aplenty. It's an alluring combination.

Review: Nowadays regarded as the stuff of punk legend, the chaotic and ill-fated jaunt undertaken by the Sex Pistols across the US in January of 1978 was hindered by so many differing factors, it was almost as if they were set to fail. Plagued by poor management while trapped on a label with no real idea how to market such a tumultuous roster outlier, the band found themselves performing for those there out of mere curiosity more than their targeted audience or genuine fans, culminating in severe burn-out in real time, captured on these recordings. Boasting all of the essential anthems from 'God Save The Queen' to 'Pretty Vacant' and 'Anarchy In The UK', behind the energy is the sound of a band imploding, while today not all wounds have healed with the surviving members currently enjoying a celebration of their iconic Never Mind The Bollocks LP with former Gallows frontman Frank Carter stepping in for MAGA man Jon Lydon, who continues to lob barbs at his former bandmates whenever given half the chance.

Review: Famously, Shadow's Sweet Sweet Dreams album was panned by critics when it first appeared way back in 1984. In the years since, it has attained cult status, with collectors of Trinidadian music particularly enjoying its curious blend of bustling boogie electronics, Soca rhythms, traditional instrumentation and sassy disco-pop style. As this tasty reissue proves, the album has lost none of its lustre over the last 30 years. Put simply, it still sounds ahead of its time, with intergalactic dancefloor workouts such as "Let's Make It Up" (with its "we're gonna have a party" refrain) and "Way Way Out" resonating particularly loudly.

Review: As the title suggests, this excellent collection gathers together tracks from three live sessions the Sisters of Mercy recorded at the BBC's Maida Vale studios between 1982 and '84, during the formative years of their lengthy career. The first session, recorded for John Peel in August 1982, contains a quartet of early live favourites, including their popular cover of the Stooges' '1969', while the second - a session for David 'Kid' Jenson' - boasts versions of tracks from the classic goth-rock EP The Reptile House (as well as a surprise Dolly Parton cover). Best of all though are the tracks from their 1984b Peel Session, which were laid to tape around the same time as the Leeds outfit was recording its debut album.

Review: 11 years into their career, Wakefield's Skinny Living feel like they're on the verge of a breakthrough. Their trademark sound has always been joyous and celebratory, with a nostalgic and accessible sound that relies more on classic soul and expansive 1960s Mod more than moody indie-rock or rough lo-fi posturing. Now signed to a major label, they've pushed that sound to the max - think heady horns and strings - on debut album Day By Day, a set recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama (where many classic soul sets were laid to tape). The resulting songs, which were written and demoed over the course of a decade, simply soar, suggesting that the Yorkshire outfit could genuinely be 'the next big thing'.

Review: Sleaford Mods have long dealt in biting, angry and frustrated social commentary. Right now, they're not short on inspirations, and it's this that makes 'UK Grim' such a terrific album. Throughout, mic man Jason Williamson takes aims at the ills of the UK and the increasingly dark, nasty rhetoric of the Conservative government that he so clearly detests. Combine these inspired vocal diatribes (shout-along hooks included) with backing tracks that don't shy away from making things heavy, paranoid and intense - think warped, weighty basslines, lo-fi drum machine rhythms and fuzzy, scuzzy, post-punk guitars - and you have one of the Nottingham duo's most hard-hitting and breathlessly brilliant albums to date... and that's saying something.

Review: Festival favourites and working-class heroes Sleaford Mods hail from the East Midlands and have become the voice of the oppressed and the pissed off. Their gritty, lo-fi, raw and stripped-back music is powered by punky electronic beats and overlaid with bars spat out with real anger and ire. They have churned out plenty of it by now, subtle tweaking the template each time but never losing the visceral appeal. This new album UK Grim - a play on UK Grime? - is more dancefloor focussed than before it with the angst and pitfalls of modern life all addressed. It's another winner, no doubt.

Review: Unabashed satirical wares straight outta Nottingham, Sleaford Mods somewhat charming embrace of British provincialism sees the semi-ironic nature of their music nestle itself in a space shared with Jamie T, Mike Skinner and Blackout Crew. Slightly wayward, political and patronising, their music can sometimes come off something like a scene out of Peep Show, though however tongue-in-cheek their commentary of the UK life can be, it's a gloriously proud album of cultural identity, and in among references to chip tune, bedroom produced beats, alternative Madchester-era sounds to rap and spoken word, it's a record embracing hoodies and trainers as much as it does anarchy and builder's tea. Review: Anticipation is running high around Slowdive's long-awaited new album. Arriving six years after their self-titled comeback in 2017, the shoegaze icons' follow-up record is a true product of the times, hampered by pandemic delays and written as a reflection on significant personal losses for band members, but equally they were never going to rush something out for the sake of it. Lead singer Neil Halstead laid down some initial demos in 2020, and then when the band could come back together they worked on recordings for two years before getting to the finished product. If you love the band's swirling, dream-like sound, you won't be disappointed by lead single 'kisses' or, indeed, any of the other tracks contained within.

Review: Sony Records has decided to reissue a slew of early albums from British shoegaze and dream pop sorts Slowdive, a band that has enjoyed a successful comeback since reforming late last decade. Here they take us back to the formative years of the Reading-born band and 1991 full-length debut Just For a Day. Recorded in leafy Oxfordshire (Abington specifically), the set is as lush, densely layered, effects-laden and gently psychedelic as you'd expect from a set that's (rightly) still regarded as one of the strongest shoegaze albums of all time. For proof, check the hypnotic, slow-motion pulse of opener 'Spanish Air', the low slung bass and hallucinatory textures of 'Catch The Breeze', the near-ambient immersion of 'Erik's Song', and the jangly sparkle of 'Brightness'.

Review: While now - rightly - hailed as one of the greatest shoegaze albums of all time, Slowdive's sophomore full-length Souvlaki was initially panned by critics - a fate that also befell the Reading combo's debut Just For a Day. Now remastered and reissued on CD for the first time in years, the 1993 set remains a pleasingly saucer-eyed, heavily layered and decidedly dreamy affair. Musically, it's generally brighter and more jangling than its predecessor, leaning more heavily into the dream-pop end of their sound whilst still retaining the reverb-heavy, suitably psychedelic guitar textures of shoegaze. Highlights include the funky, late 60s nostalgia of '40 Days', the dubby and spaced-out headiness of 'Sing' and the stretched-out heaviness of 'Souvlaki Space Station'.

Review: Given their Radiohead connections Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood make up two thirds of the band), there's always been an enormous amount of interest in The Smile - a lockdown-born project that has plenty of potential. Wall of Eyes, the trio's second album, is certainly impressive. For proof, check the moody, suspenseful and slowly unfurling title track (all pulsing, low-slung semi-acoustic grooves, eyes-closed vocals, dense electronic textures and soundtrack strings), the heady, subtly jazz-flecked wall of sound that is 'Friend of a Friend' (listen out for the music concrete-style sound collage sitting in the background of the White Album era Beatles-esque 'Friend of a Friend'), and the lo-fi, string-laden headiness of the largely beat-free 'Bending Heretic', whose cut-glass horror strings and Nine Inch Nails style guitars are impressively intense at times.

Review: Following years of notable collaborations with some of jazz's leading voices, saxophonist and band leader Walter Smith III finally broke through in 2023 via a first headlining album for Blue Note. On his return to the label, Three of Us Are From Houston and Reuben is Not, Smith pays tribute to the Texan city of his birth in the company of Jason Moran (piano), Eric Harland (drums) and Reuben Smith (bass). It's a pleasingly breezy, positive and expertly crafted affair, with the quartet running through a series of ear-catching Smith compositions and a radical (and rather good) interpretation of an old Sam Rivers number. A wholehearted tribute to the rarely discussed cultural richness and diversity of Smith's home city.

Review: There are many ways to deal with upheaval and crises but sometimes the best approach is to answer harsh realities with an antidote. Speaking on their new album, tree-loving masked electro-punks Snapped Ankles say: "We can still hold the line of beauty, form, and beat. No small accomplishment in a world as challenging as this one... hard times require furious dancing. Each of us is proof." And to their credit the album lives up to the manifesto: 'Raoul' is exactly what you'd want to hear at 3am in Glastonbury festival; whilst 'Pay The Rent' sounds like a homage to big beat, spiced with krautrock. Snapped Ankles clearly have the tools and the talent to send people's minds to space. A noble entry deserving of glory.
