Review: The genesis of this album was three soundsmiths getting together in Brother Sound Studio in March 2024. It's a room full of synths and instruments and mics and in there they set about their work with Martin Dread responsible for the composition. What results is a bunch of proper chunky dubs with a very modern production edge. Synths have a clean digital shine that brings a future feel, the toasting though is traditional so brings authenticity and the melodies are perfect for getting lost in after a hefty toke.

Review: The Satta Dub crew have assembled another superb platter and pressed it up to translucent green marbled vinyl and included an insert for good measure. It's a spit that opens up with Daweh Congo's 'Holy Place' which rides on tumbling drums with scattered hits. Yearning vocals up top and natty keys are paired with sultry trumpet notes. A dub dials it all back into the low ends, then Prince Alla's 'Rose' is a work of the same rhythm, by the sounds of it, with soulful vocals and playful horns. Another dub closes out this one in heady fashion.

Review: One of the leading dub related labels to emerge in recent years, Avantroots project of taking dub as a genre to its furthest and freshest perspectives, while still showing the utmost respect for the history and the figures inside it, continues with this eye-opening contribution, 'Linval Thompson Meets Avantroots'. Featuring tracks from the likes of Deepchord, Pulshar, Deepnaut, and Braulio Lam, this latest project (as the name suggests) was led by the dub legend himself, Linval Thompson, who's list of credits and those he's influenced is pages and pages in length. 'World Crisis' is Thompson's key message, running like a refrain, re-emerging throughout the EP and finding new shapes with each artist's fresh approach. Deepchord's iteration, unsurprisingly, is the deepest of the collection, encircling and hypnotic it orbits Thompson's echoed vocals to perfection. Pulshar's take offers greater lyrical clarity, keeping the surrounding production minimal and delectably slow-paced, giving room for each element to breathe. Deepnaut's version is brighter, bubbling with the plucked samples of spaced-out electric guitar and expanding synth pads. Braulio Lam's offering, the final track on the release, is a more experimental, broken groover - chopping and shifting the vocals in a collage effect, refracting Thompson's message in order for it to be seen in a new light. A fantastic release to sink into - fully immersive and richly detailed.

Review: Recorded at Sam Shepherd's Floating Productions Studio, this superb seven-inch sees contemporary space-age jazzman Emanative join forces with legendary trombonist Phil Ranelin. In its original form, "Vibes From The Tribe" is a deliciously warm and hazy chunk of intergalactic dancefloor jazz rich in skittish, post-hip-hop drums, gently rising horns, spacey effects and spiritual spoken word vocals. It's utterly brilliant as is Al Breadwinner's flipside dub, which takes the pair's original version even deeper into space via copious amounts of reverb, tape-echo and traditional Jamaican dub production techniques. We actually like this revision even more than the original, which tells you how good the seven-inch single is. Essential!

Review: Henry & Louis hooked up with Prince Green for this one way back in 1995. It has been a cult underground favourite ever since and finally it gets a long awaited reissue which will save you having to fork out three figures-plus for an original copy. 'Too Late' is polished electronic dub with impassioned vocals praising jah. 'Too Dub When Rastafari Dubs' strips out much of the word play and ups the studio trickery, then two further dubs take up the b-side. 'Too Dub (Will Be Their Cry)' then ups the drums with a more muscular feel, and last of all comes a version laden with echo and reverb.

Love & Only Love (12")

Review: Tony Ruffcutt is a legend in the reggae scene and has been since the 70s. The label named after him has now got the right to recut a classic from that era, 'Love And Only Love' by Fred Locks. The original is a full-flavoured rhythm with nice wooden hits and brassy horns accompanying the fat-bottomed low end while the vocal is smooth up top. A dub mix and then a super dub adds even more weight to the low end and on the flipside is another roots icon in the form of Prince Alla who adds fresh lyrics to 'Man On Board'. The various overdubs and vocals were recorded in Jamaica with mixdowns taken care of by the legendary Caveman.

It's a fresh blend of classical and reggae that has heavy rhythms and gorgeous instrumental layers that carry you away. The lies of David Roddigan were a huge fan and now some of the key cuts from it are presented don this vital standalone 12" by Roots Garden. There are breezy summer rollers and pained dub anthems included along the way.

Review: Augustus Pablo and Enos McLeod were something of a dub dream team back in the heyday of the gene in Jamaica. They produced plenty of great jams together, a few of which are being reissued at the moment. This one is another heavy hitter from the pair. 'Pablo Nuh Jester' pens up with some traditional drum shuffle and natty guitar work. The kicks sit perfectly in the bass while the florid bursts of harmonica are pure vibes. On the B-side, Enos McLeod steps up to rework and further dub out his own rhythmic framework and calls it 'Last Of Jestering.'

Review: Man like Augustus Pablo is revered amongst true dub heads. His ability to lay down killer riddims was second to none back in the day and this one is a classic amongst many. 'Pablo In Red' rides on a tuff rhythm from the mid-seventies that was originally produced by Enos McLeod. It has some enriching harmonics and wobbly low ends. On the flip, McLeod's 'Well Red' is a dubbed-out version with extra sonic spice making it more late night and twisted.

Review: There sure is a lot of heat packed onto one 7" here with a series of vocal cuts and dubs from the Peckings label. Don Evans opens up with the chunky and off-balance roots of 'The World Was Mine' with its impassioned vocals. The dub aversion is even better - they are smeared and smudged in psychedelic ways over a lumpy beat that has real swagger. On the flip is Paragons with the lazy and laid-back sounds of 'It's Alright' which Supersonics flip into a melon-twisting dub.
