He even made a welcome comeback in the mid 2010s and added some more magic to his cannon. Here Kero Uno remixes a couple of his tunes and ups their funky quotient to make them more suitable to dancefloors. Review: Bowie is a new label that says it intends to "dig deep into the unreleased sides of pop superstars material from the past." The opening gambit is a strong one that should hook you in for more as it comes in the form of a 7" with two fine funk instrumentals, neither of which have been put out before. 'Golden Years' has lovely live drums and meandering guitar licks for some carefree listening, while 'Fame' has a deep cut groove that rises and falls in dramatic fashion with more neat and tidy riffs adding the detail next to the big licks.

Review: This newly formed and already brilliant label is back with more previously unreleased instrumentals that bring a different twist and dancefloor edge to classic sounds from the rock and indie world. First up we get a subtle edit of 'Sound and Vision' which has a nice fat and funky bassline bouncing beneath the splashy drums as nice acoustic guitar melodies ring out next to glistening retro-future pads. It's a cosmic trip that oozes soul then things slow down on the flip with 'Young Americans'. This one is a nice go-slow instrumental with funky and expressive horn work taking the lead over the fat-bottomed drums and bass. Essential.

Review: These two unreleased tracks from Geater Davis deliver raw, hard-hitting Southern soul with his some nice gritty vocals, sharp guitar work and powerful horns all making them perfect for anyone who loves a bit of blues-tinged soul. Geater was born Vernon Davis in East Texas in 1946 and learned guitar from T-Bone Walker before then working as a sideman and breaking through with 'Sweet Woman's Love' in 1970. He charted again in 1972 with' Your Heart Is So Cold' on Seventy 7 Records, and though disco's rise curtailed touring opportunities, he kept performing across the South. Sadly, just as he was preparing for a comeback, he died of heart failure at age 38, but these gems remain.

Review: P-Vine Japan does great work once more here by bringing back into print some hugely sought-after sounds from the blues and r&b world. The first release in their new series revives Larry Davis' 1969 Kent Records single, which was originally written by Sherwood Fleming. The A-side, 'For 5 Long Years' delivers a gritty mid-tempo funk-blues groove while the B-side, 'I've Been Hurt So Many Times' (a classic subject for a blues tune) channels Willie Cobbs' signature sound. These will be familiar to anyone who has danced at a Northern Soul event and cannot be slept on.

Review: For the last couple of years, DJ AL has been serving up creative edits that breathe new life into iconic tracks from hip-hop and r&b. He's already dropped a big one in 2025 but quickly backs it up with two more razor-sharp reworks. First up is 'MVP (DJ A-L Blahzay Blahzay remix)' which has big old school energy, dusty and raw drum breaks and hard bars a plenty. 'Jump Around (DJ A-L Shoot Your Shot remix)' is a more soulful sound with a deep cut groove but still plenty of 90s hip-hop energy and some hip-swinging claps. A great return that is sure to fire up many a 'floor this summer and beyond.

Side-A delivers a hypnotic, jazzy boom-bap instrumental built from rare Soviet-era Azeri jazz samples layered with gritty vocal chops from vintage rap records. It's a brilliant cross-cultural collage that feels at once nostalgic and fresh. Review: Details on the good Dr Ray are thin on the ground, but both here tunes suggest that whoever they are, they have a love or raw, classic hip-hop and rap. 'Speaking On Death Row' has big Hammond organ chords that speak of a gospel sermon but they soon make way for big, raw drum breaks and hard-hitting bars. Jumbled percussion fleshes out this old-school gem. 'Lyrical Rec Room' is more stripped back with a raw boom-bap low end, rhythmic bars and synth stabs to inject the energy. Two ageless, time-worn sounds that are as authentic as they come.

Review: On a remote, gravel-covered spit along the east coast stand the remains of a Cold War-era government weapons testing and radar facility. In the mid-1960s, this site hosted the creation of an over-the-horizon radar-a groundbreaking system designed to bounce signals off the ionosphere to monitor distant nations. Its success depended on a complex interplay of frequency, solar cycles and atmospheric conditions but yet persistent interference plagued the system and rendered it ineffective. Despite multiple investigations, it was decommissioned and dismantled by the early 1970s. Today, the once-ambitious Cobra installation lies dormant, reclaimed by nature as a quiet, unlikely wildlife refuge and these are sounds inspired by it.

Review: The work of London-based Suffolk lad Dalham (Jon Michaelides) often comes accompanied by textual musings on existential themes, and his latest record And The Sun is no exception, hearing him quip on the mooted tulip that is generative AI: "As humankind strives to create artificial intelligence what will faith, love, or morality look like to a nascent consciousness? Will it be capable of understanding its creators who often hold logic and superstition within themselves?" So do questions of climate, macro-scale recklessness, and internal contradiction abound on this new record; an eight-track sublime that fits in well with the label's retromodernist, sometimes neo-pagan aesthetic sensibility. A weird Western ambient odyssey, where one abstract electronic artist's resident Suffolk surroundings merge with the same piano-led, drum machine-mapped scenes, not also long ago explored in 2024's 'Alive In Wonderland'.

Review: Who can forget Maneskin's triumph for rock on the Eurovision stage as they brought the win for Italy in 2021? In Damiano David, the Italian band have a natural born frontman who is now having his Harry Styles moment and stepping out on his own and forging a distinctive solo career to rival the day job. Despite being labelled a glam rock outfit, Maneskin's pop element always shone brightly and so for his debut solo album David has tapped more heavily into that side of his. David's embraced co-writes and in terms of the production he has thrown the kitchen sink at it to get a massive sound. 'The First Time' has more hooks than a fisherman's tackle box and a sweeping epic Sprinsteen-esque feel. Another highlight 'Next Summer', lets David's vocals star, but the arrangement is unexpectedly massive. Despite its sparse beginning it turns into an orchestral showstopper indicative of the seemingly vast resources the label have had to craft this beauty.

Captured on Black Beauty: Miles Davis at Fillmore West, this performance is one for the agesifull of explosive improvisation, raw energy and a palpable sense of transformation. The album, finally reissued on vinyl after years of being locked away in Japan, is a time capsule of a moment in jazz history where tradition was discarded and a new frontier was being built. With his usual crewiGrossman, Chick Corea on keys, Dave Holland on bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Airto Moreira on percussioniDavis steered the ship into turbulent, unpredictable waters. It's all about the groove, the shifts in rhythm, and the untamed trumpet blasts that echo through the room like firecrackers. Jazz-pincered vignettes are heard piercing the fragile complexities of the mind, across a record whose shapeshifting veneer crosses streams of tension and revelation with an arachnid sleight of foot. With 'Crivellamento' standing out as a key marrying point of ritualistic percussion and avant-garde looseness, we're left spasmodic. Reissued again on standard and purple vinyl as part of the Sounds From The Screen series, we've an historic contribution on our ears from the Italian studio maestro.
