Naked In Manhattan (3:34)
Review: Chappell Roan burst onto the scene in 2020 with this viral hit which did a great job of introducing a vibrant and unapologetically queer pop sound. Co-written with Daniel Nigro, her debut album followed in the form of The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess and it captured the Missouri native's journey toward achieving her pop star dreams. This limited-edition 7" single features 'Pink Pony Club' and 'Naked in Manhattan', both pressed on stunning baby pink vinyl that reflects Roan's bold and heartfelt artistry. As a celebration of self-expression and musical passion, this is a must-have.

Review: The superb 'Say Yes To Heaven' by sultry singer-songwriter Lana DeL Ray was an outtake from the Ultraviolence sessions which gained viral popularity after leaking online. Because of that, it was eventually released as a single. To mark its official release, it has now been pressed on a limited edition picture disc vinyl, featuring the equally brilliant 'Black Beauty' as the B-side. This limited edition 7" picture disc vinyl is an essential pick up for collectors and fans alike.

Review: It's a match made in Balearic heaven. Ela Minus, Colombia-born, Brooklyn-based artist, best known for building synths, placing agitational statements between her carefully woven ambient melodies and her Acts Of Rebellion album, meets fellow New Yorker DJ Python, he of the hypnotic dembow stylings, for a bumper value-packed six track EP. Ghostly vocals float across stark beats and sometime gloomy, sometime edgy but cheery dayglo musical textures on the three vocal versions, and there are three instrumentals for those who prefer their grooves that way.

Time (Hearts Full Of Love)
Same Game
Leaving
Come On Baby
Secrets
Review: Vince Clarke and Andy Bell won plenty of praise for their 19th album as Erasure, last year's Neon, with critics praising the analogue-rich, retro-futurist nature of its synth-pop sound. The tracks on this five-track EP, which was mostly recorded during the same period, mine the same pool of vintage synth sounds, some of which are reminiscent not of the pair's early joint works in the 1980s, but Clarke's earlier spell as one of the founder members of Depeche Mode. 'Time (Hearts Full of Love)' and 'Same Game' are both melancholic, stirring and addictive in equal measures, while the bleeping 'Leaving' is pleasingly dreamy. Those seeking more up-tempo, club-ready sounds should head for 'Secrets', a throbbing slab of turn-of-the-80s dance-pop which boasts numerous nods to Giorgio Moroder and Bobby Orlando.

What A Time (2:52)
92 (3:18)
Million (3:19)
IRL (3:25)
Finish Line (3:11)
Review: Applying what we're all thinking in February 2021 to a kind of Netflix & Chill parody, Fickle Friends are definitely the most thematically fitting band of the month. The Brighton outfit join a long and esteemed list of British pop groups that manage to marry scathing, sarcasm, and bare-boned honesty with sweetness, beauty and universality. Providing you like those keyboards with a No.1-style glitter coating, of course.

Opening on biggest of the lot, 'What A Time', the troupe opt to get the most inescapably positive out of the way first before rolling out real variety. '92' is an icy cool, emotionally scarred (or scarring?) ballad, 'Million' is a stepping, rave-rock workout, with 'IRL' apparently made for sunnier times than the current UK winter, and finale 'Finish Line' closing out on a calming and uplifting tone that's not a million miles away from what some would describe as Balearic chill.

Tu M'as Mise A Genoux (1:48)
Review: Fleur is a firm favourite with fans and now teases the new upcoming album with a new 7" single that is going to resonate well with fans of acts like The Kinks, Holly Golightly and The Remains. The A-side, 'Nous Continuerons a Marcher Ensemble' kicks off with a sharp guitar riff and builds into a catchy, powerful chorus. The B-side, an exclusive to this 7", is 'Tu M'as Mise a Genoux' a fast-paced punk track driven by fuzz bass. Both of them are superb retro indie-pop bangers and have been penned by Mark ten Hoor of The Kryng, and he also recorded the backing tracks for this release.

Rruina (3:31)
Review: Sami Galbi is a Swiss-Moroccan musician who looks to his childhood for musical inspiration. The A-side of this new 7" is a thoughtful post-breakup classic with raw synths and bouncing rhythm that melds rai influences with contemporary sounds and despite tacking a serious subject with gravitas also has a humourous edge. On the flip is 'Rruina,' a powerful follow-up with deeper darker club sounds that take Swiss-Moroccan rai-chaabi fusions into new territory. Both tunes are captivating listens from this fine talent and are sure to make an indelible impression on all who hear them.

Review: 'Departures' is one of the most renowned singles by the Japanese band Globe, originally released in 1996. The track achieved significant success and became the group's second number-one hit on Oricon's weekly chart and went on to sell a total of a rather astonishing, especially in comparison to these digital times, 2.2 million copies, making it one of Japan's best-selling singles. Now the tune gets reissued on 7" and is a raw, dense pop-rock tune that comes with a bonus cut on the flip.

Originally released in 2014, this festive pop classic has become a firm and warm favourite for the way it blends Ariana's soulful vocals with a catchy, heartfelt melody. Review: Lawson Jr'Music is based in Montreal in Canada and is a drummer, singer and music composer who has played all over the world since a young age. He brings a distinctive Afro vibe to his take on hip hop as demonstrated by this masterful new cut on BSide/Lawson Entertainment. 'Let It Go' is defined by its screwy bass down low and the echoing hits up top. Aside from that I'd an empty but atmospheric cut with yearning vocals and melancholic chords. The flispide instrumental allows the slick production to shine.

Montero came back in 2021 and these cuts haven't been available on wax before now. With the exception of 'Baggy Trousers,' 'Embarrassment' stood as the sole Madness single from the 80s not to receive a 12" release. Surrender (3:38)
Review: Emotional Rescue returns to early 1980s Manchester with the previously unreleased music of Michael James Pollard and his beautiful distillation of indie pop in Too Confusing and bedsit cover version of Ashford and Simpson's Surrender.

While studying photography at Manchester Polytechnic, (MJ) Pollard lived and played in a band in a ramshackle house in Walley Range. In the cellar studio he would write and record his own songs using their guitars, fretless bass and keys, as well as his own Casio VL-Tone VL-1 and Simmons Clap Trap to augment his drums onto a 4 track TEAC.

By 1983, and now solo, he was recording out of Dislocation Dance's studio (ERC111), had secured a Peel Session and via Factory Records' Lindsay Reade, was discussing with Fundacao Atlantica about releasing an album.

Working with singer Sioux Goddard as a duo, they put down 8 songs in 2 weeks in summer '84. However, Fundacao Atlantica's financial difficulties and soon closure meant the songs were lost until now.

Recovered off the original tapes and lovingly restored, Too Confusing captures the optimism of the sessions, a summer love melody of forlorn youth. Surrender accompanies, recorded back in that cellar in '81, with friend Stephanie Danziger on vocals, its lo-fi simplicity is a perfect take on an all-time classic, making this a newly prized gem of British indie pop history.

Ron Next Door (alternative mix) (5:50)
Sitting On Top Of The World (5:26)
Review: Happenstance can be a fortuitous element. A union-funded single discovered in a dusty store, a long disbanded band found, leads to unreleased post punk dubs in a box of unreleased demos.

Formed during the mid-80s in the downbeat town of Walsall, their music is a blend of disparate influences from 50's crooners, blues and reggae to Killing Joke and The Bunnymen; Ron's Neighbours were out of step with the perfect pop of the C86 indie generation.

Their only single - "To The Fight" - a split 7" was supported by the Trade Union Resource Centre, while many gigs were benefits for striking miners, leading to a loyal local following.

Engineered by Ozzy Osbourne's brother Tony, tracks were recorded at an 8 track bedroom / home studio, while a terraced house served as rehearsal space. Here Ron Next Door was born. When a tape recorder was left running it captured the long-suffering neighbour for posterity. His outburst gave the band and song, its name.

Experimenting with drum machines, the resultant jam track, here in its "Alternative Mix", languished unheard until now. Ron's 'Black Country' tones lead to driving bass / percussion against crashing Stratocasters and repeating, refrained vox - a post punk dub turned symphony.

The B side, Sitting On Top of the World, is an indie anthem, becoming their theme, a blend of grandiose and banal that characterised their songs.

The Specials are real UK national treasures, aren't they? And rightly so. Alexis Petridis has even gone so far as to say their standout single 'Ghost Town' is the second greatest UK single to have ever been released. Again, it's hard to really argue with that one. It was a UK chart topper at time of release and speaks eloquently of the urban decay, unemployment and ongoing racial tensions of the period. Sound familiar? Sadly, you once again have to agree. This 40th Anniversary Edition has been mastered and cut at half-speed for extra oomph.

First up is 'Conceited' which has a slow motion groove and dumpy kicks with Lola's acrobatic vocals shapeshifting throughout next to bleeping synth sounds. Review: Here's a chance to cop a pivotal piece of R&B history on vinyl. Aaliyah's second album was released in 1996, when she was just 17, and she was already one of the most commanding artists in modern R&B. Working closely with Missy Elliot and Timbaland on a number of the tracks, she made a significant step on from her debut with a revitalised and forward-leaning sound, and all while finishing drama school and preparing to star in Romeo Must Die. One In A Million is solid gold start to finish, and given how costly original pressings of it can be on the second hand market, this reissue is long overdue so grab it while you can.

Review: This is a deluxe reissue of a real pop classic from back in 1997. ABC is a group that traces its origins back to Vice Versa, a Sheffield band formed in 1977 by Stephen Singleton and Mark White. They released the Music 4 EP after founding Neutron Records and Martin Fry, creator of the fanzine Modern Drugs, interviewed Vice Versa before later joining as synth player. By 1980, the band transformed into ABC, with Fry assuming lead vocals. The lineup included Fry, Glenn Gregory of Heaven 17, and Keith Lowndes. Though their debut album received acclaim from critics, it didn't achieve widespread commercial success. Despite this, ABC's fusion of pop and electronic elements laid the groundwork for their future iconic sound.

Together they reflect the urgency of recounting a meaningful night to a close friend with live experiences over the past year shaping its narrative and sound. A nuanced pop album with plenty to explore.

Review: Already the winner of a Brit Award (Adele was voted the 'Critics Choice' - the most exciting new British artist expected to 'make it big' in 2008),
'19' is Adele's debut album. Citing influences as diverse as Etta James, Jill Scott, Bjork, Dusty Springfield, Billy Bragg, Billie Holiday, Jeff Buckley,
The Cure and Peggy Lee, Adele also recently completed her first solo UK tour, having toured previously with the likes of Jack Penate, Jamie T,
Raul Midon, Amos Lee and Devendra Banhart. '19' contains both her debut track 'Hometown Glory' and her smash single 'Chasing Pavements'.
Blues tinged and melancholic, Adele describes 'Chasing Pavements' as 'It's me being hopeful for a relationship that's very much over. The sort
of relationship you hate when you're in it, but miss when you're not'. A hymn to lost love and regret, 'Chasing Pavements' follows Adele's first
limited edition single 'Hometown Glory', which introduced her to the world to much critical acclaim, with NME calling it 'totally, absolutely beautiful',
Q Magazine calling her 'The voice of next year' and The Sunday Times saying 'A Star Is Born'

Review: Even reading the words All Saints takes us back to simmer times, when pop music seemed far more innocent and pop stars - the female ones at least - wore far more clothes. The British group's self-titled debut album was cooler and smarter than many of their candied peers (Spice Girls, we're looking at you) and blended effortlessly soulful vocals with rich, atmospheric production. From start to finish, the album lays down emotionally charged and honest lyrics. The production is lush yet minimal, allowing the powerful vocals to take centre stage, with classics like 'Never Ever', 'I Know Where It's At' and 'Lady Marmalade ('98 remix)' all still oozing a nice new soul and r&b edge.

Review: Australian rapper Iggy Azalea's third album The End of An Era came on her own label Bad Dreams Records and took inspiration from the end of her 20s. It is a musical time capsule of that decade and features some guest spots from the likes of Bia, Sophia Scott and Ellise, while production was taken care of by frequent collaborator J. White Did It amongst others. The beats throughout are highly addictive with plenty of them ready to make you get up and dance. There are plenty of crossovers between future house and bass music making it one of her most accomplished works to date.

Review: California-born singer-songwriter BANKS, aka Jillian Rose Banks, creates moody, alternative pop with hints of contemporary r&b adding extra depths. After emerging in the early 2010s, she gained a cross-genre following with her downtempo, alt-r&b style and her debut album, Goddess, earned critical acclaim and gold certification with hits like 'Before I Ever Met You' and 'Warm Water.' BANKS followed three more albums and now drops her fifth which is another subversive blend of all sound that have gone before with an evolved attitude and still a great number of hooky groves.

Ten Crowns (CD 2: Dave Audé continuous DJ mix)
Review: While he's released countless albums as one half of Erasure, Andy Bell solo excursions are something of a rarity - at least under his given name. Setting aside his conceptual 'Torsten' albums, Ten Crowns is his first solo album since 2010. Produced by Dave Auden (who also provides a seamless, DJ mix style version of the set on disc two), it largely delivers a more muscular, EDM-influenced take on the sparkling and energy-packed synth-pop sound he's famed for making with Erasure. There are naturally deviations from the script - see the indie-rock-framed singalong alongside Debbie Harry, 'Heart's A Liar' - but for the most part the highlights are rooted in Bell's love of dance-pop/synth-pop fusion (see 'Don't Cha Know' and 'Breaking Through The Interstellar').

Review: In what must be one of THE record releases of the year, Queen Bey is back with her majestic new album. As has been hotly discussed online, this album finds her embracing club music in no uncertain terms, with collaborators like Honey Dijon and Green Velvet lending their expert house touch to the fiercest force pop music has ever witnessed. The results are earth-shattering, as if we expected any less, and the due diligence on acknowledging the roots of house music culture is delivered with sincerity and authority. Make no mistake people, this is the real deal.

Review: Beyonce joins Drake in the house-via-Baltimore club 'renaissance', which has seen to a good deal of major hip-hop & R&B artists working in the styles over the course of entire albums and mixtapes. This being the queen of pop's first album in over six years, some naysayers say songs like 'Break My Soul' (filled with 90s organ and downtempo kicks and snares a-la Robin S) and 'Energy' (packed with batida stylings) are paint-by-numbers, but we beg to differ; for Beyonce, it's a polyglot of reinventory music.

Review: Following from the success of this year's Vulnicura LP, Iceland's Bjork has decided to release an acoustic companion made up of string-only reinterpretations; a more abstract and pensive piece, if you will. One Little Indian is the label, of course, but this time there are strictly no beats, and the only concrete sounds within it are the subtle and placid wails of Bjork's own voice. While it isn't truly a pop album, there is enough playfulness and charm to render it playable not only as a solitary piece of music, but also alongside other pieces...in an explorative DJ set, perhaps.

Dance Mode is the follow up to the number one album Bluey already put out and it is another collection of 17 brand new recordings from series two and three of the hit animation, originally composed by Joff Bush. The heartfelt, funny portrait of family life is always brought alive by the colour sounds and has plenty of upbeat EDM tracks that bring the good times to any family disco.

Review: Kate Bush has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity ever since one of her most iconic tracks was included in some of the most notable scenes in Stranger Things. It is maybe for that reason - that and the return of Bush to the live arena after a decades-long absence - that her canon is now being revisited and reissued with Fish People offering up this remastered version of her classic Never For Ever full length on lovely heavyweight silver and black vinyl. It comes with brilliantly ghoulish artwork and kicks off with the classic 'Babushka' before taking in the likes of 'All We Ever Look For' and 'Night Scented Stock.' A classic amongst many from this singular songstress.

Review: Kate Bush's debut album, The Kick Inside, showed right from the off that Bush was a prodigious talent with a uniquely ethereal sound. Released when she was just 19, the record which has now been remastered for this new reissue, showcases Bush's remarkable songwriting prowess and distinctive vocal style. From the haunting balladry of the classic 'Wuthering Heights' to the enchanting melodies of 'The Man with the Child in His Eyes,' each track is a testament to her boundless creativity. The lush arrangements and poetic lyrics continue throughout all the cuts to ensure this remains a timeless classic that continues to captivate listeners with its emotive storytelling and unparalleled musicality. Review: Kate Bush enjoyed an unlikely renaissance (and a welcome boost to her bank balance, no doubt) with the younger generation when her music was used in iconic scenes in the hit Netflix show Stranger Things. She has long been a revered pop great who always had an outlier sound which despite that saw great commercial success. For that reason, she was invited to the BBC for a Christmas Special in 1979 and that recording is now pressed up just in time for the festival season. It features plenty of her best moments which will bring great warmth to the winter including the likes of 'December Will be Magic Again' and 'The Man With The Child' plus a version of Peter Gabriel's 'Here Comes the Flood' featuring the former Genesis frontman himself.

Review: Chase Atlantic's fourth album offers a more mature sound than previous LPs while exploring themes of loneliness, depression and fear. The title reflects the paradox of being in an ideal place yet feeling miserable and the music showcases the band's evolution into a fusion of pop, rock and r&b in their signature genre-defying style. The lead single quickly gained popularity by amassing millions of streams and views and follow-up 'Doubt It' continues the trend with addictive melodies and fresh sounds. Although Chase Atlantic pushes boundaries here, their original fans will still remain happy with the signature energy of this album.

Featuring songs that blend pop, r&b and dance beats, the album showcases the talents of the Cheetah Girls themselves aka Adrienne Bailon, Sabrina Bryan and Kiely Williams as they take on new challenges in Barcelona. Highlights include the upbeat 'Strut' the empowering 'Cheetah-licious Christmas' and the catchy 'The Party's Just Begun'" The soundtrack perfectly mirrors the film's themes of friendship, self-expression and following dreams as well as being full of infectious tunes.

CD1 takes us back to 2007 and a set from Buenos Aries heavy on early classics ('Yellow', 'Clocks', 'God Put a Smile On My Face', 'Fix You' etc.), while CD2 finds the Winchester band at UEA in Norwich in 2011, performing said classics alongside more tracks that turned them into global indie-pop superstars ('Mylo Xyloto', 'Viva La Vida'). Disc three, the most recent performance of the lot, dates from 2016 and includes, amongst its numerous highlights, soaring, stadium-sized takes on 'Paradise', 'Hymn for the Weekend' and Leonard Cohen classic 'Suzanne'.

Review: They're the biggest but most hated band on the planet, but that will never stop Coldplay. The band has long been at the top of the pop-rock world and once again Music of the Spheres is likely to keep them there. It is an album rather less wrought with emotional tension than they are known for but still has one eye firmly on the cosmos, like much of their material. In fact, there is a loose concept here that revolves around a distant solar system. The lead single, 'My Universe,' features K-pop kings BTS and is already a number one, and the rest of the tunes are so unashamedly big they will likely follow.

Review: Boy George was a key figure in London's Blitz Club scene of the early 80s and with Culture Club he helped define the New Romantic movement that led the so-called "Second British Invasion" of the US with their 1982 debut album, Kissing to Be Clever. A number five hit in the UK and a global success at the time, the album featured the smash hit 'Do You Really Want to Hurt Me' and the lively 'I'll Tumble 4 Ya'. Blending new wave, pop, reggae and soul, their genre-crossing sound and bold fashion continue to influence today's artists which is why this one now gets a special reissue for National Album Day.

The record was started two years ago and was all figured out and finished, but then got deleted. Cyrus skas that not only was th emu gone, but the whole relevance of it given how much changed in her life since the record was started. As such she wrote a whole new collection of tunes that are now presented here. Soft rock and pop, ballads and harder tunes, big arena anthems and power-riffs all feature.

Cyan Blue reflects a subtle yet profound evolution of her distinctive sound and songwriting prowess. Review: London-born neo-soul sensation Olivia Dean has soared to stardom since the release of her debut album, Messy, back in the summer of 2023. By May 2024, she headlined three sold-out nights at London's iconic Hammersmith Apollo and the second performance, captured on Live at Eventim Apollo, is a fine example of her remarkable stage presence and soulful vocals. The album features fan favs such as 'Dive,' 'Touching Toes' and 'Time' which highlight her heartfelt storytelling and signature sound. This is a great testament to her talent and meteoric rise and one that celebrates Olivia Dean as one of the brightest voices in contemporary neo-soul.

Review: American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey's seventh album Chemtrails Over the Country Club features a cover of Joni Mitchell's 1970 song 'For Free' but otherwise features lyrics that pertain to her "stunning girlfriends" and "beautiful siblings." The sound of the record is therefore more airy and sunny, expansive and less claustrophobic that previous works. This lighter sound suits her - not that previous album aren't also essential - with an emotional innocence and vulnerability shining through each song. Folky, nuanced and atmospheric, this might be one of Del Ray's best yet.

Review: Over the course of her last few albums, Lana Del Ray has evolved into a significant chronicler of 21st century American life, with sharper-then-ever lyrics accompanied by fittingly haunting, downbeat and bittersweet musical arrangements. Blue Bannisters, which like so many albums released this year was written and recorded during lockdown, continues in a similar vein to its predecessors, with Del Ray's fragile, melancholic vocals being accompanied by ghostly synthesizer chords, striking piano motifs, drowsy aural textures, simmering strings, gentle guitars and occasional rhythmic nods to trip-hop. It's more bittersweet than intense, but undeniably a creative response to the most testing of times. Considered in those terms, it's a hugely impactful and entertaining album.
