Review: The Fallout: Soothing Sounds of the Apocalypse vinyl is a nostalgic journey through iconic hits of the 1930s, 40s and 50s that beautifully contrasts the dark, post-apocalyptic setting of Amazon's Fallout series. This 12-song collection includes unforgettable tracks by legends like Johnny Cash, Nat King Cole, The Ink Spots, Perry Como and Ella Fitzgerald, evoking a haunting yet charming atmosphere for fans of the show and the beloved video game franchise. Songs like 'I Don't Want To Set the World on Fire' by The Ink Spots and 'Orange Colored Sky' by Nat King Cole capture the eerie beauty of a world grappling with survival amidst ruins, while tracks such as 'Crawl Out Through The Fallout' by Sheldon Allman add a touch of dark humour. This soundtrack brings together timeless music that has helped shape the unique atmosphere of the series.

Review: There's something electric about hearing these live cuts pressed onto a lovely glossy picture disc. It's not just nostalgia, it's the grit and spontaneity of a performer who, even in the twilight of his career - these were recorded in 1974 and 1976 - could still bring a room to its knees. The energy is raw, the crowd reactions are real and the band behind him lock and step. These versions feel lived-in. 'Steamroller Blues' grinds forward with swagger, while 'Trying to Get to You' and 'You Gave Me a Mountain' cut deep with emotional weight. 'Hound Dog' still hits like a shot of adrenaline. The medley of 'Teddy Bear' and 'Don't Be Cruel' feels tossed off in the best way, like a quick smile to the audience before getting serious again. A snapshot of a performer still capable of surprises, even years past his peak chart dominance. For fans of the man's live sound, this one's a keeper.

Burning Moonlight (2:59)
Love Is (3:37)
Three Kinsmen Bold (3:28)
She Moved Thru’ The Fair (2:29)
Review: Recorded during the final year of her life, this posthumous release finds Marianne Faithfull looking both backwards and forwards - reconciling the weight of legacy with the intimacy of reflection. Across these four new tracks, she honours the dual foundations of her 60-year career: chamber pop and traditional British folk. 'Burning Moonlight', co-produced with long-time collaborator Head, echoes the melancholic grandeur of 'As Tears Go By', while 'Love Is (Head version)', written with her grandson Oscar Dunbar, floats with tender defiance. The flip side turns to lineage and tradition: 'Three Kinsmen Bold' is stark and ancestral, passed down from her father and 'She Moved Thru' The Fair' is sparse, aching, and spectral. Faithfull was born in Hampstead and came of age in 60s London, and here, on what is now her final release, she returns to the very start - not out of nostalgia, but with grace and resolve. It's the completion of a circle, yes, but it still leaves a faint line trailing off into the air.

Review: Paul Weller is perhaps one of the best non-soul musicians to ask to compile a rare soul compilation. Rather than documenting soul music as it proliferated in the 1960s, Ace Records' soul aim was to capture a genre, fashion and style as one man saw it in retrospect, in light of his involvement in the mod revival of the mid 1970s. Weller would later go onto form and front The Jam, but in late 1974, shortly before his involvement in the punk movement, he was about none of that business at all. Punk partly grew on febrile tissues of mod, which was in turn an offshoot of 60s soul; and it is true that we may hear a foetal form of the sound in the brasher cuts on this record, be it Billy Stewart's 'Summertime' or James Carr's 'Pouring Water'. Also clock Brother To Brother's 'In The Bottle', a super-early drum machine blues gem perfect for the house heads.

Review: Upon its release in 1970, Donny Hathaway's latest album was met with critical acclaim but modest commercial success. The LP showcased Hathaway's extraordinary versatility, blending gospel, jazz, blues and soul into a cohesive whole. It was a rich tapestry of influences, marked by Hathaway's stunning vocal prowess and his ability to craft arrangements that felt both intricate and organic. The album also set the stage for his subsequent works, cementing Hathaway as one of the most important voices of his generation. Tracks like 'The Ghetto' and 'Tryin' Times' revealed his commitment to addressing social issues, while songs like 'Thank You Master' and 'Je Vous Aime' showcased his personal and spiritual depth. In the decades since its release, Everything Is Everything has grown in stature, celebrated as a cornerstone of soul music.

If You Believe Your God Is Dead (Try Mine) (3:14)
He's Sweet I Know (5:09)
Review: A soulful 45 reissue from the Swan Silvertones - a band from America's deep south who bridged the gap between doo-wop's close harmonies and rock 'n' roll in the 1940s and 50s - delivering two powerful tracks that will resonate with fans of gospel, funk and blues. Side-1 features a high-energy, gospel-infused funk track with a strong vocal performance that channels the spirit of James Brown. Its catchy rhythm and bold message make it an instant standout. On the flip side, this one has a more laid-back vibe, blending soulful blues and gospel influences for a deeply emotional and smooth listening experience. A perfect balance of intensity and tenderness from the band said - by the man himself no less - to have inspired Paul Simon to write 'A Bridge Over Troubled Water'.

Review: 1972 was a pivotal year for The King. Having spent a good deal of the previous decade growing increasing focused on movies - or perhaps more accurately, getting lost in a relentless filming schedule foisted upon him - he'd reached psychological lows towards the end of the 1960s, but then re-emerged more in control of his own career decisions and re-energised, with the famous Comeback Special a major catalyst.
Three years later he hit the road for a mammoth 15 city spring tour which would spawn its own movie (aptly titled, Elvis On Tour), and set the scene for the following year's live flick follow up, Aloha From Hawaii Special. The performances proved the fact that He Had Returned, bigger and bolder than ever, as evidenced through this collection of recordings from those 1972 rehearsals.

It's an upbeat rhythm that will get you on your toes with its energetic horns and riffs, swaggering drums and superb vocal work. On the flip of this limited 7" is, of course, 'In A While Crocodile'. This 20-track collection celebrates the legacy of Holly and The Crickets and takes in many of their most iconic hits like 'That'll Be the Day' and other gems released under his various different monikers. Despite his tragic death in 1959, Holly's brief yet brilliant career left an indelible mark on rock 'n' roll after he emerged by mixing up Texas country roots with r&b influences with great guided by producer Norman Petty. Holly's sound was both fresh and timeless, and this album proves what a pioneer he was.

Review: If you use the online network-cum-existential-need-to-know community Reddit, then it won't surprise you to learn there's a vast and almost unfathomably broad sub group dedicated to The Beatles. Within this, at least a handful of people have posed the question: "if the Beatles had done an MTV Unplugged concert in approx 1968 what stripped down classics might be in the resulting brilliant Unplugged Album?" Forgive the grammar - we took the speculative quandary verbatim from an internet that long-since descended into a linguistic void. Nevertheless, those stumped by this query will be delighted to know that such a record does exist for us to use as a touchstone. Albeit without the MTV bit. And what tracks made the cut? Well, 'Why My Guitar Gently Weeps', 'Revolution', 'Julia', 'Cry Baby Cry', and 'The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill', among others.

Review: American jazz singer and actress Nancy Wilson is still going, having accrued a queenly quantity of releases to her name ever since the late 1950s. She has recorded over 70 albums of jazz, soul, pop and r&b, not to mention an uncountable barrage of original ingles; among her choicest is Sunshine, which we'll have you know doesn't happen to be a cover of the Roy Ayers original. Instead, Sunshine is a more-than-sophisticated soul-jazz piece, opening with futuristic filter-swept synths and emerging into slinky lyrical ode to the unparalleled feeling of loving you, as opposed to anyone else.

Review: Salena Jones has been active since the 60s, recording over 40 albums of jazz, soul and easygoing pop in that time. Her rendition of 'Am I The Same Girl' - the soul standard written by industry songwriting string-pullers Eugene Record and Sonny Sanders - lies among the greats of its reinterpreters. While Barbara Acklin's version is most famous, Salena Jones' version is much warmer, and its mention of the instrumental's name, 'Soulful Strut', to the main title should be indication enough from the off that Jones' version carries a far greater buoyancy.

Review: Thanks to the year being 2025, te jazz age of the 1920s is being centennially anniversaried the world over. But when recorded music took the world by storm from the 50s onwards, it was only a matter of time before such starlets Lu Elliott would make latent but no less powerful waves in the same early jazz sound, except this time around, the sonic vestiges of the time were preservable. Elliott, a jazz/blues singer and recording artist, was a onetime BB King and Duke Ellington posse member, having found her lungs playing in a band known as The Cubanaires before bronchi-ating out into mid '60s solo stardom with tunes such as 'Speaking Of Happiness'.

Between 1962 and 1967, Hardy emerged as a symbol of French elegance and introspective pop, captivating audiences worldwide with her distinct charm and emotional depth. This compilation features her most enduring hits, like 'Tous les garcons et les filles', 'Mon amie la rose' and 'L'amitie', which embody the heartfelt sentimentality and existential undertones she brought to the French ye-ye scene. It was a number two album in the UK charts but marked the band's first ever Billboard 200 number one (maybe because at the time only the American version contained their biggest ever tune, '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction'). Here the mono version gets reissued and contains songs made over a six month period including the top ten hit 'The Last Time.' Rumble In The Jungle
Review: It's hard to fault the work of the Original Gravity crew and when the tasteful London label's All Stars assemble it's even more important to take note. It is they who kick off 2025 with a classic funky break that is topped with spoken word samples from an MC at a big fight event (though it's not Michael Buffer, the man behind these famous words, because he has a strict copyright on them). The beats are as fiery as a heavyweight showdown with plenty of punchy horn stabs. On the flip, 'Rumble In The Jungle' is a similar sound that makes just as much impact.

Review: Squirrel Nut Zippers' third studio album, Perennial Favorites, receives its first vinyl reissue since its original 1998 release, bringing back the infectious energy and eclectic blend of styles that characterized the neo-swing movement. What sets the band apart from its contemporaries is its ability to capture the genuine spirit of hot jazz, acknowledging the darker undertones and genuine hedonism of the era. Led by charismatic vocals and backed by a tight ensemble, the album delivers a mix of catchy hooks and loose-limbed glee. Tracks like 'Suits are Picking Up the Bill' and 'Fat Cat Keeps Getting Fatter display the band's knack for solid hooks and playful arrangements, while 'Ghost of Stephen Foster' and 'That Fascinating Thing' hint at the subtext that informed swing and hot jazz. Perennial Favorites stands out as a genuine and joyous celebration of the genre. The album effortlessly dabbles in various styles, from big-band swing to jazz crooning to klezmer, all while maintaining a sense of musical accomplishment and respect for history.

To say the New Musical Express pulled together an impressive line up for the magazine's celebratory concert, at which the winners of a reader's poll were revealed, would be an understatement. And this is before we even mention the fact The Rolling Stones were also involved, only beaten to the top of the bill by The Beatles. On the day, Liverpool's Fab Four were presented their award by none other than Roger Moore, and then proceeded to play their first live show in 15 weeks. 'She Loves You', 'You Can't Do That', 'Long Tall Sally', and 'Can't Buy Me Love' were among the highlights, with an audience of 10,000 packing out the Empire Pool in Wembley for the entire day. This recording captures the energy of that set and the spirit of the time.

Review: The fourth edition in Original Gravity's Down In The Basement series, which gathers instrumental soul and swing cuts onto worthy 7" slabs, resounding the fervent 1960s decadal gap in which mod reigned supreme. With juleps flowing and kneecaps knocking, Abramo & Nestor bring newfangled electric pianistic swing with 'Dig It!', while a twinned "hit it!" injunction is heard from Floyd James & The GTs on the reissued 'Work That Thang'; James' voice is tubed and speed-delayed to terrific effect, achieving a sprung intonation. Curtis Baker brassifies the bonanza with the lively 'Fried Fish 'n' Collard Greens', while The Native Yinzer's exiting excitation 'The Hip Strip' quilts our ears with a mnemic, down-feathery Hammond-breaks bit.

Review: The 1967 album Country, My Way by Nancy Sinatra, reissued by Light In The Attic, highlights her distinctive blend of pop and country. Recorded at RCA Studios in Nashville, the album shows Nancy's ability to fuse her own style with classic country elements. The album opens with the upbeat 'It's Such a Pretty World Today' and includes the hit duet 'Jackson' with Hazlewood, rivalling Johnny Cash and June Carter's version. Nancy's take on George Jones' 'Walk Through This World with Me' and Don Gibson's 'Oh Lonesome Me' prove her command of country ballads. The album's other great tracks also include the emotional 'When It's Over' and the joyous 'Lay Some Happiness on Me'. Remastered from the original analogue tapes by John Baldwin, the reissue adds five bonus tracks, including the James Bond theme 'You Only Live Twice' and the non-album single 'Tony Rome'. With its expanded gatefold jacket and a 20-page booklet featuring a Q&A with Nancy, this reissue pays homage to her pioneering musical contributions.

That's It (2:10)
Review: Decca has seemingly listened to the cries of collectors and diggers everywhere by serving this reissue of two sought-after 7-inch singles from the 1960s Mod era, including their original B-sides intact. This is one of them, 'Tax Man' by Loose Ends, the British Beat quintet formed in 1963 in Bexleyheath in Kent and fronted by Alan Marshall. The band toured alongside acts like The Paramounts (later Procol Harum) and The Birds and this, their second and final single, was released in August 1966 to coincide with The Beatles' original. Featuring an added organ for extra dancefloor appeal, this is a timeless delight that still gets any floor going.

Review: The second BBC bank holiday Beatles special From Us To You was recorded on February 28, 1964, at BBC Piccadilly Studios and it aired a month later on Easter Monday, March 30. Hosted by DJ Alan Freeman, the set featured The Beatles' debut performance of 'You Can't Do That,' which had been recorded just two days earlier. Initially considered for their next single, it was later placed as the B-side to 'Can't Buy Me Love,' which came in March of that year. Bonus tracks included here from the August 1964 show are 'Boys' and 'Long Tall Sally,' which serve to highlight the band's evolving repertoire and their energetic live performances during this period.

Don't Call Me Baby (4:21)
Take A Chance (3:52)
Review: Thee Sinseers excel at expressing the complexities of love through their engaging melodies. The band, rooted in East Los Angeles, has made a name for themselves in the Chicano soul scene, led by QuiNones. The lineup also features talented musicians such as Eric Johnson on tenor sax and Jose Luis Jimenez on trombone, all contributing to a rich tapestry of influences, from 1960s rocksteady to the vibrant spirit of Ritchie Valens and Ray Charles. 'Can't Call My Baby' leads the way as one of the strongest tracks taken from their debut full length album highlighted on this 7". On Side-2 introduces 'Take A Chance', a brand new and previously unreleased track. Here, Joey Quinones shines with his distinctive crooning, urging listeners to seize the moment and embrace love before it's too late. The inclusion of a soulful harmonica adds a lively flair, beautifully blending elements of classic Motown with Latin soul influences. Together, these songs highlight Thee Sinseers' distinctive sound and artistic versatility, merging nostalgic elements with a modern twist.

Now Cincinnatian blues legend Albert Washington gets his due: a highly productive recording artist, active from the 60s all the way through to the 90s, Washington's 'I'm The Man' seizes the a short window moment in which a new spinster might be met with an opportunistic proposition after a bad breakup. "You don't have nobody to call your own / darlin', I'm the man / I share your pain, I do / I can make all your dreams come true / now, come on / yessir, you need me..."

Review: Light In The Attic teams up with Laurie Anderson and the Lou Reed Archive for a thrilling retrospective, Why Don't You Smile Now: Lou Reed At Pickwick Records 1964-65. An expansive selection of songs all written by Lou Reed, during his mid-60s stint as the staff songwriter for the long-defunct label Pickwick Records, this is a rare glimpse of a master rock musician stepping out of the limelight over the course of 25 songs, yet still letting the form and contour of his voice and sensibility be heard. All this was achieved before Reed had at all launched his career with the Velvets; it may indeed be said that this pubescent 60s period was the firelighter to Reed's flame, as the label specialised in soundalike records that emulated the major pop hits of the day - it's no wonder Reed would absorb such emulations and take them in as his own, albeit with a Century-defining twist. Channelling everything from teenybopper pop to soul-inflected garage rock, whether byJeannie Larimore, The Hi-Lifes or The Hollywoods, we get a thorough look-in here as to what made Reed and his contemporaries tick, and what Reed made tick in turn, before the fame.

Each song feels like an intimate portrait, capturing the raw energy of late-night clubs where the beat flows as freely as the heart. The compilation blends old-school charm with a gritty edge, introducing a fresh generation to the subtle brilliance of these artists. With restraint at its core, the collection allows the music to speak for itself, never needing to rely on flashy nostalgia to leave its mark. It's pure, soulful and compelling.

Review: Should you be able to find original copies of the two dusty-fingered classics featured on this "45", your bank balance was be significantly smaller. Of course, just because something is rare and expensive doesn't make it good, but Jimmy Thomas's 1969 cut 'Springtime' is genuinely brilliant. Released when funk-rock was arguably at its height, it sees the legendary soul man belting out Alan de Roches' lyrics over a Hammond-heavy fusion of soul, funk and Hendrix-style heavy rock. This time round, it comes backed with a relatively hard to find - on vinyl, at least- chunk of reggae/soul/rhythm & blues from iconic Jamaican singer Owen Grey. It's superb, of course, but we still prefer the incendiary A-side.

Review: Soul Junction's latest release brings together two sought-after heavy soul cuts from the studio of the Poindexter Brothers: their own 1969 heater "What I Did In The Street (I Should Have Done At Home)" - a sweet, Vibraphone-sporting slab of rasping, full-throated, horn-heavy sixties soul just dripping with emotion - and a killer cut they produced a year earlier for singer Vivian Copeland. You'll find that song, "Chaos In My Heart", on the A-side. Originally released on Bell, it's an attractive and additive mid-tempo number in which Copeland's fine vocals come supported by low-register horns, shuffling soul grooves and some suitably heavenly backing vocals.

Their energetic doo-wop take on 'Unchained Melody' became a hit until the British Invasion shifted the music scene. 'Hey There' remained unreleased until Rick's 1981 double album which compiled their singles and rare collector cuts after years of misrepresentation and a court battle with a copycat group. In 2020, Monster Mike unearthed The Long Island Sound's unreleased 1969 demo of 'Hey There' which was recorded before the band dissolved. Now, Oracion Records drops this forgotten gem on 45.

Featuring mostly British and American artists the label now widens its net to serve up a pair of high impact tunes from their well-received Ciao Bella! Diving deep into his personal collection here, this album reflects Hawley's absolute dedication to a pastime few may already know him for: slowly amassing a mammoth selection of 7" records in the mode of garage rock and skiffle. Many are instrumentals, flaunting Hawley's ear for a sound that goes beyond just lyricism or theme. With star cuts from the likes of The Timekeepers and Bobby Gentry, certainly do not miss this is if you're the the right kind of British rock obsessive.

'Look At The Lights Go Up' is Hopscotch's contribution, with the band made up of former members of the Eyes and Tomorrow, and the track comes as a rare and unreleased demo of melodic trip-sat illumination and lyrical nonsensicality ("This lady from the forest of Manhattan...". Capitol and United Artists reshaped the UK releases, crafting albums for American audiences eager for the Beatles' fresh sound. This 8LP set (adding the The Beatles' Story 2LP documentary) is expertly remastered from original master tapes using an all-analog process, ensuring a faithful recreation of the original vinyl experience while enhancing sound quality. Each album is housed in its original artwork and includes essays by Beatles historian Bruce Spizer. From 'I Want to Hold Your Hand' to 'She Loves You', this collection will help you relive Beatlemania at its height, presenting a stunning audio experience that pays homage to the band's U.S. chart dominance in 1964. Perfect for both collectors and new fans.

The Cheques - "In The Groove" (2:50)
The Merits - "Arabian Jerk" (2:10)
Review: A double dose of dancefloor bliss is administered (subversively without doctor's orders) by Kent Soul. These two numbers have been faved by fans from several scenes and the world over: first, there's The Cheques' 'In The Groove', a longingly upbeat homage to a groovin' place by the obscure Louisianan organists. Lead organist Tony Nardi, would later go on to form the Thai funk group Salt & Pepper, famously recording 'Man Of My Word', but for then and now, this 60s manoeuvre would serve to transcend its mod origins, attracting the Northern soul crowd in the years to come. After, 'Arabian Jerk' by The Merits rehears a Goldwax production out of Memphis: mod and exotica collide in a steaming instrumental excitation of backbeat accents and parping 2-4 guitars, making a mod belly dancer's anthem.

Elijah Rockin' With Soul (3:01)
East Side (2:56)
Review: Accomplished keyboard player Hank Jacobs enjoyed much renown on the American West Coast live music circuit at the height of the soul era, having already scored a recorded instrumental hit with 'So Far Away' in 1964. His subsequent gigs as a session musician might've proven him capacious only for life in showbiz as a sideman, but this possibility would be firmly and permanently negated by 'Elijah Rockin' With Soul'. The record emerged by lucky chance from a recording session with arranger Arthur Wright, and Jacobs afterwards went on to make four further releases on Alton Scott's Call Me label at Wright's behest. Now, spanning two favourite Jacobs 'sides with different regional appeals, this new one from Kent Soul hears 'Elijah' as the A track - a precocious future compliment for the Northern soul scene - and 'East Side', an instru *mental* recording with a walloping full-colour sound, more propitious to the LA scene.

The Deacons (3:23)
Pisces Pace (2:24)
Review: Detroit musician and producer Dave Hamilton hears two fantastic early emissions of his reissued via BGP. Known originally as a guitarist and an early member of the Motown house band, Hamilton's influence on music, especially the later Northern soul firestorm in the UK, is perhaps understated. His guitar contributions to the likes of Marvin Gaye's 'Stubborn Kind Of Fellow' and John Lee Hooker's 'Boom Boom' are indeed cherished additions to the Michigan funk and r&b canon, but perhaps it's his later outings as Dave Hamilton and the Peppers - and later founding of the labels Demoristic and TCB - that house the real trinkets. 'The Deacons' and 'Pisces Place' both came out via the TCB label, and brought vibraphonic blues and astrologic easy listens respectively to wax.

Opening with the infectious 'Wooleh Booleh' by Sonny Ace & The Twisters, the compilation quickly sets a vibrant, foot-tapping tone. Review: Latest from the Elvis Presley reissue/retrospective crock comes Memphis, the first fully comprehensive collection of Elvis Presley's hometown recordings. Yes, the entirety of Memphis was recorded, at one time or another, by the King Of Rock & Roll in the prodigal city sandwiched somewhere between Kentucky and Alabama in the American Midwest. Clocking in at 24 tracks, Memphis captures Presley from his earliest sessions at Sun Studio - which occurred 70 years ago this summer - to American Studio and Stax sessions, his 1974 hometown show and his final recordings in Graceland's Jungle Room.

After many years lurking in the underground dungeon beneath, Mike now pops the lid on his cell for an eighteen-track LP full of oddball rock & roll, garage rock and instrumental jazz, the likes of which no mere mortal can stomach at the best of times. From The Big Guys' 'Zombie' to Mysterions' 'Transylvania' to The Bluenotes' 'Rigor Mortis', you're in for a real fright on this eighth volume.

Review: The 2022 remix of The Monkees' Headquarters revisits the pivotal album where the band seized creative control, marking a milestone in their musical journey. Produced by Chip Douglas, Headquarters captures Michael Nesmith, Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones and Peter Tork stepping beyond their TV personas and establishing themselves as a real band. Featuring remixed tracks from the original multitracks, the release restores the album's original pitch while expanding its stereo separation. Highlights include Nesmith's jangle-pop gem 'You Told Me', Dolenz's inventive 'Randy Scouse Git', and the Boyce & Hart-penned 'I'll Spend My Life with You'. This edition also unearths gems like Neil Diamond's 'A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You' alongside bonus tracks, alternate takes, and insightful studio chatter. Complete with a 28-page booklet this set illuminates The Monkees' creative revolt, delivering a fascinating glimpse into the band's groundbreaking rise to artistic autonomy.

Delirio/Contigo En La Distancia (Medley) (4:56)
Hijo De Mama (4:31)
Review: The Cuban boleros of the 1950s and Nuyorican street soul of the 1960s always embodied a timeless Caribbean romanticism in the midst of New York City's urban landscape. La Triunfadora's debut album captures this sense of revival with experimental, psychedelic arrangements that revitalise classic tunes with fresh interpretations. Their debut 7-inch on Names You Can Trust honours Cuban bolero maestro Cesar Portillo De La Luz with lush orchestration and vocals by Candace Camacho and Benjamin R. Julia. The B-side reimagines Ralfi Pagan's 1969 Latin soul gem 'Hijo De Mama' by blending analogue warmth with a modern twist.
