Love Me Do (2023 mix) (2:26)
Review: There are as many opinions on 'Now & Then' as there are people, but regardless of your own thoughts on this revived Lennon sketch there's no denying the arrival of the final Beatles single has been one of the major musical events of 2023. Collectors and completists, meanwhile, of which we gather The Beatles have more than a few, will be trampling on top of each other to get hold of these Japanese editions of the single.

I Saw Her Standing There (2:54)
Review: With a million preorders in the UK alone, The Beatles' 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' soared to number 1 in December 1963 and knocked their own 'She Loves You' off the top spot. It became their first official single on Capitol Records and was backed by an aggressive marketing campaign. The single, which had 'I Saw Her Standing There' on the B-side, was rush-released in the USA in January 1964 and quickly hit number 1 on the Hot 100 by February 1st. Selling over 12 million copies worldwide, it marked the arrival of Beatlemania. Now it has been remastered from original US tapes by Kevin Reeves for this special 7" reissue.

Love Me Do (2:26)
Review: Initially put forward as a potential Beatles single during the mid 1990s 'Anthology' period but shelved due to objections from George Harrison, 'Now and Then' has been trailed as the iconic band's 'final single'. It's re-emergence now in finished form (it was completed partially using AI, but also some studio trickery by Giles Martin) ties in with the reissue of the band's two 1973 'best of' compilations (the so-called 'Red' and 'Blue' collections). Like their two singles of the 90s, it features Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and the late George Harrison finishing off an early 70s John Lennon demo, with a little help from producer Jeff Lynne. It comes backed with a freshly remixed, 'proper' stereo version of their debut single, 'Love Me Do', thus completing the band's musical journey once and for all.

Review: Chuck Berry's 'Run Rudolph Run' remains a holiday classic, bursting with infectious energy and timeless rock 'n' roll swagger. Originally released in 1958, this upbeat track blends Berry's signature guitar riffs with playful lyrics, capturing the spirit of Christmas in a way only rock 'n' roll can. The song's brisk pace and catchy melody make it a must on any festive playlist, and this 7" evergreen vinyl reissue brings its warm analog charm to life. Perfect for both collectors and casual listeners, it's a nostalgic piece that adds a rock-infused jolt to the holiday season. Classic, fun and undeniable, Run Rudolph Run is a joyful tradition.

Review: Bull & the Matadors, hailing from East St. Louis, brought their soulful energy to the Toddlin' Town label in 1968, joining forces with the iconic Leaner family. Inspired by Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In and its courtroom sketch craze, they released the groovy r&b hit 'The Funky Judge,' crafted by Andre Williams and Leo Hutton. Review: BunnDebrettQuintet has got a monster modern soul tunes on their hands here with the legendary Brian Auger on Hammond B3 helping bring the style. The glorious A-side 'Truth In My Tears' has a raw but heartfelt vocal and big horn energy over driving drums. It's a real dancefloor heater and then the flip is 'Wasn't It You', a more soulful groover with lush backing vocals but still dynamic drums powering it onwards. This outfit's last single went on to become a much sought-after release that is now well spenny on Discogs so do not sleep on this limited follow up.

Review: The Essence Of Life is very much listening to the sort of sublime soul music that is always offered up by the Epsilon label if you ask us. This latest limited edition 45rpm features their 'You're An Angel' which is one of the many tunes that made the group such favourites back in the seventies. They formed in Charlotte North Carolina at Johnson C Smith University and are made up of a pair of basketball players who were allegedly overheard singing in the shower and asked if they wanted to form a group. They went on to perform with plenty of stars of the day and as you can hear from this 7" their falsettos are to die for.

Review: This desirable 7" record by Fabio, originally released in 1968 and reissued in 2024, is a true gem of psychedelic rock. With its raw, garage-infused sound, the record transports listeners to the vibrant counterculture era. The title track, 'LSD Lindo Sonho Delirante,' embodies the album's trippy, dreamy atmosphere. Its distorted guitars and hypnotic rhythms create a swirling soundscape that evokes the surreal experiences of psychedelic rock.. 'O Reloginho' offers a more upbeat contrast with its catchy melody and playful lyrics. Fabio's unique blend of psychedelic rock and garage aesthetics makes this album an essential addition to any collector's library. Its rarity and sonic charm will undoubtedly appeal to enthusiasts of the genre.

Review: The Cuban boleros of the 1950s and Nuyorican street soul of the 1960s always embodied a timeless Caribbean romanticism in the midst of New York City's urban landscape. La Triunfadora's debut album captures this sense of revival with experimental, psychedelic arrangements that revitalise classic tunes with fresh interpretations. Their debut 7-inch on Names You Can Trust honours Cuban bolero maestro Cesar Portillo De La Luz with lush orchestration and vocals by Candace Camacho and Benjamin R. Julia. The B-side reimagines Ralfi Pagan's 1969 Latin soul gem 'Hijo De Mama' by blending analogue warmth with a modern twist.

Review: In 1961, producer David Rick discovered Vito and The Salutations, a Brooklyn harmony group of Italian, Irish and Jewish teenagers. Their energetic doo-wop take on 'Unchained Melody' became a hit until the British Invasion shifted the music scene. 'Hey There' remained unreleased until Rick's 1981 double album which compiled their singles and rare collector cuts after years of misrepresentation and a court battle with a copycat group. In 2020, Monster Mike unearthed The Long Island Sound's unreleased 1969 demo of 'Hey There' which was recorded before the band dissolved. Now, Oracion Records drops this forgotten gem on 45.

Her smoky tones come across these two stylish mod-jazz gems starting with the titular 'Sweetheart' which has lazy and slow motion grooves with some lovely reverb-heavy guitar lines reign out next to Jane's sensuous jazz delivery. On the flip is 'Loser' which has a more upbeat feel with 60s tones to the vocals as the swinging drums and feathery snares all add extra depth. A lovely 7" here for fans of all styles of soul.

With Helen's stellar guitar, Ricky Lee's dynamic drums, and Jake's vocals, harmonica, and bass, their sound spans rockabilly, rock'n'roll, blues boppers, and sixties vibes with effortless cool. It epitomises the energy and rebellious spirit of the 1950s and was released as the title track for the film of the same name. It marked a pivotal moment in Presley's career but also became a cornerstone of rock and roll history, capturing the essence of the genre's early years and leaving an indelible mark on popular music. Review: You have a genuine piece of musical history here. The Anchors may not be remembered by many, but made a significant impact on everyone who does. Black Soul is the third and - to all musicologist knowledge - last record put out by this pioneering South African funk-soul outfit. Straight out of the Johannesburg township of Alexandria at the height of Apartheid, they became known for exceptional musicianship and reinterpreting the classic Memphis, USA sound for their own oppressed community. Part three of that legacy takes things much, much further, though. So, we can definitely still hear those Mid South sounds that represent the very essence of soul, but here the aesthetic becomes something altogether different, Afro and specific to time and place. Homage paid to the genre founders, but drawing on personal circumstances to own things for themselves.

Review: This October marks the 60th Anniversary of The Animals' self-titled debut album. Never heard before in official vinyl reissue form, this remarkable return hears the mod rock menagerie of Eric Burdon, Alan Price, Hilton Valentine, Chas Chandler and John Steel come together for a worthy groove-laid garage shutdown. With such hits enduring hits in tow as 'I've Been Around', 'I'm In Love Again' and 'Bury My Body' - though not packing their standalone, transatlantic treat 'House Of The Rising Sun' - this early record, first released on Columbia Records, tells the sonic tale of a now under-appreciated Newcastle band, whose efforts were nonetheless instrumental in helping to usher in the so-called British Invasion (musically) of the US music market in the 1960s.

Review: .Just like Ronseal says on the tin, Live In Stockholm 1964 features live recordings from The Beatles' second venture to Sweden in the one year, where they would perform four shows over two days on July 28-29 at Stockholm's Johnneshov Isstadio. Broadcast on Swedish TV, the performance is known for technical issues including neither John nor Ringo's mics working, meaning you've to go with just backing vocals for 'You Can't Do That', and 'I Wanna Be Your Man', while both John and Paul would receive electric shocks from ungrounded microphones. The live collection also boasts cuts taken from their earlier 1964 visit, including the four-minute medley version of all five of their UK hit singles from 1962-1963, while marking the final time either 'Love Me Do' or 'Please Please Me' would ever be performed live on stage.

If you use the online network-cum-existential-need-to-know community Reddit, then it won't surprise you to learn there's a vast and almost unfathomably broad sub group dedicated to The Beatles. Within this, at least a handful of people have posed the question: "if the Beatles had done an MTV Unplugged concert in approx 1968 what stripped down classics might be in the resulting brilliant Unplugged Album?" Forgive the grammar - we took the speculative quandary verbatim from an internet that long-since descended into a linguistic void. Nevertheless, those stumped by this query will be delighted to know that such a record does exist for us to use as a touchstone. Albeit without the MTV bit. And what tracks made the cut? Well, 'Why My Guitar Gently Weeps', 'Revolution', 'Julia', 'Cry Baby Cry', and 'The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill', among others.

Review: They say that in life, we only regret the things we don't do. So imagine how you'd feel having sat in on The Beatles' 1962 audition for Decca Records if you then simply thanked the Fab Four for coming in and told them, through a smile of pure dishonesty, that they would be hearing from your assistant. A call that would never come. The label's loss was EMI and Parlophone's gain, in the end, and now we have the evidence to prove just how short sighted Decca execs were. The Decca Tapes, as it sounds, is a full setlist of everything that was played on that fateful morning. More so, it's a document of what could be the greatest misjudgement and oversight in 20th Century pop history. Still, you can't win 'em all.

Review: This 1964 release encapsulates the Beatles' remarkable evolution during their busiest year. Featuring tracks from the British Beatles for Sale alongside singles like 'I Feel Fine' and 'She's a Woman', it showcases their unparalleled ability to balance raw energy with introspective songwriting. Songs such as 'No Reply' and 'I'm A Loser' highlight the growing lyrical depth of Lennon and McCartney, while 'Rock and Roll Music' and 'Honey Don't' pay homage to their rockabilly roots. The inclusion of 'I Feel Fine', credited with pioneering guitar feedback in pop music, and the vibrant 'She's a Woman' bring a cutting-edge feel to the album. Meanwhile, gentle gems like 'I'll Follow the Sun' and 'Baby's in Black' add emotional range. The combination of its vibrant mix of acoustic textures, rock 'n' roll covers and groundbreaking singles ensures it remains a testament to the Beatles' brilliance at a pivotal point in their career.

Review: The newly reissued A Hard Day's Night captures The Beatles at the height of their early brilliance. Released during the frenzy of Beatlemania, the album shows John Lennon and Paul McCartney's unstoppable songwriting partnership. From the iconic opening chord of the title track to the infectious energy of hits like 'Can't Buy Me Love' and 'I Should Have Known Better', it brims with youthful exuberance and sheer musical craftsmanship. While Rubber Soul marked a shift towards experimentation, A Hard Day's Night thrives on its confidence and irresistible pop-rock melodies. The film songs on Side-1 deliver unforgettable moments, but the overlooked gems on Side-2 reveal the band's deepening musical sophistication. With tight harmonies, catchy hooks, and electrifying performances, this is a reminder of The Beatles' unparalleled ability to blend fun with musical mastery. Even today, A Hard Day's Night stands as a landmark album that is always a welcomed reissue to press and enjoy.

Review: The Beatles' second album, came out in April 1964, just two months after their iconic appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. Filled with high-energy rock 'n' roll and r&b, it's a lively collection that delivers non-stop excitement. Unlike its predecessor, Meet The Beatles!, this release features a mix of Lennon-Mccartney originals and six cover tracks, including classics like 'Roll Over Beethoven' and 'Please Mister Postman'. This all-analogue reissue of The Beatles' second album uses the original 1964 mono master to create a faithful recreation of the iconic release. the lacquers, ensure the sound remains true to the original pressing, while revealing more musical details than ever before. The 180-gram audiophile pressing brings a warmth and clarity to tracks, In addition to the meticulously replicated artwork, the release includes a four-panel insert with an essay by American Beatles historian Bruce Spizer, giving fans an added glimpse into the album's history. whether you're a lifelong beatles fan or someone discovering their music for the first time, this reissue is a great opportunity to experience a classic in its original form. As with many Beatles reissues, the second album is a fantastic way for newer generations to discover the band's early work. the mix of electrifying hits and unique covers makes it an exciting chapter in their ever-evolving discography.

Review: If you use the online network-cum-existential-need-to-know community Reddit, then it won't surprise you to learn there's a vast and almost unfathomably broad sub group dedicated to The Beatles.

Review: Lounge singer Richard Cheese presents his 28th studio album and it is a heartfelt collection of melancholy saloon ballads styled after classic Frank Sinatra Capitol Records concept albums. Featuring 12 newly recorded tracks for 2024, the album pairs Cheese's sincere vocals with rich orchestrations and wistful piano and super covers along the way including Radiohead's 'Lucky,' The Offspring's 'Self Esteem,' R.E.M.'s 'South Central Rain,' Harry Styles' 'As It Was' and Lana Del Rey's 'The Greatest.' It makes for a record full of soulful, nostalgic interpretations.

Review: Richard Cheese is a lounge music legend. He has various trademarks such as his tiger-striped tuxedo and his enormous microphone, as wells his snappy jazz trio. They make for mix of music and martini vibes and back in 200 they dropped their debut album Lounge Against The Machine, wittingly named in reference to iconic rockers Rage Against The Machine. The album is now reissued and features original "early" versions of some favourite Cheese songs, all of which were later re-recorded with a real live big band feel but here retain a more real and raw edge.

Review: Dreams can come true. When the late, great Robert Gordon was nine years old, the punk rocker turned Rockabilly-revivalist heard Elvis on the radio and he set his sights on becoming a rock & roll musician. The American went on to have a glittering career that included a stint in New York punk scene favourites Tuff Darts and having Link Wray on his records. But it was in 1978, upon signing to Elvis' label RCA, that he said it was "a dream come true." This is the first album Gordon did with RCA and his first with the go-to session guitarist of the time, Chris Spedding. It's a powerhouse of a record expertly weaving through rockabilly, 50s pop and country. Gordon's soulful vocals sparkle with nostalgic and lustful tones that are able to light up any room where it's heard. A true master of his art.

Review: Margo Guryan's solo album, Take A Picture, originally released in 1968, has attained cult status for its enchanting blend of honeyed vocals and sophisticated songwriting. Known for her influence on soft-pop and dream-pop genres, Guryan's album features the iconic track 'Sunday Morning,' later covered by Bobbie Gentry and Glen Campbell. This reissue, now available on vinyl, features Guryan's jazz background shining through in her meticulous compositions, which have been praised for their funky sunshine arrangements and lush melodies. As a renowned songwriter, her works have been performed by artists ranging from Astrud Gilberto to Harry Belafonte. Take A Picture stands as a bridge between Burt Bacharach's sophistication and the indie pop stylings of Belle & Sebastian, influencing artists like the Wondermints and even inspiring Diablo Cody during the creation of Juno. Despite critical acclaim, Guryan preferred the role of songwriter over performer, reflecting her dedication to musical craft and independence from the spotlight.

Review: Margo Guryan's Take a Picture is a charming artifact of late '60s pop, blending the orchestral sophistication of Burt Bacharach with the dreamy resonance of early Belle & Sebastian. Guryan, a seasoned songwriter with credits including Ornette Coleman and Harry Belafonte, crafted a singular album that's both a lush time capsule and a showcase of her unique vision. Now released on gold vinyl, the production is richly adorned with horns, strings, and sweet harmonies, creating a warm, nostalgic atmosphere. Tracks like 'Sunday Morning' (later covered by Bobbie Gentry and Glen Campbell) and 'Sun' radiate a carefree energy, capturing the essence of Sunshine Pop. Ballads like 'Think Of Rain' and 'Thoughts' are very nostalgic, while 'Love' intriguingly veers into Psychedelic Rock. Take a Picture endures as a delightful reminder of its era, offering a glimpse into a bygone musical sensibility with Guryan's endearing, Doo-Wop-inspired vocals at its core.

Featuring iconic hits such as 'The Ghetto - Part 1,' 'A Song For You,' and the soulful duet 'Where Is The Love' with Roberta Flack, Hathaway's emotive vocals and profound lyrics take centre stage. Concluding with the uplifting 'Someday We'll All Be Free,' this compilation resonates with soul-stirring melodies and resilient messages and allows Hathaway's legacy to shine brightly and leave an indelible mark on listeners with his timeless and enduring spirit.

Review: A rock n' roll compilation with a twist, 28 Little Bangers From Richard Hawley's Jukebox is a brand new selector's V/A LP from the 1990s Britpop figurehead and former member of the band Longpigs and Pulp. Diving deep into his personal collection here, this album reflects Hawley's absolute dedication to a pastime few may already know him for: slowly amassing a mammoth selection of 7" records in the mode of garage rock and skiffle. Many are instrumentals, flaunting Hawley's ear for a sound that goes beyond just lyricism or theme. With star cuts from the likes of The Timekeepers and Bobby Gentry, certainly do not miss this is if you're the the right kind of British rock obsessive.

Review: Movements Vol.12 fills a bag of rare rhythm & blues, mod-jazz, and mid '70s funk. Launching on a note of obscure rhythm and blues from the 60s, most of the tracks heard thence were sifted from "hopelessly obscure" 7" singles; hopelessly obscure, that is, until now, when many a ravenous compilation curator seek to restore their honour. With most of the tracks doused in vocal reverb, and coming filled with oodles of commonsensical wisdom and everyday tootling advice, we segue from deepfunk to big band to mood jazz and then back to funk, the most impressive in the lattermost category having got to be the 4 Dimensions' 'Hipper Snapper' and Gus Brendel's 'Sax On The Rocks'; the instrumental side of the record is especially great.

Review: It is well known that Little Richard revolutionised music as a founding father of rock 'n' roll. His flamboyant style was as important to that as his electrifying performances and genre-defining hits like 'Tutti Frutti' and 'Long Tall Sally' which very much reshaped popular culture. After years of chart success, Richard underwent a profound spiritual transformation that ended with him leaving rock for ministry in the 1960s. However, his 'Second Coming' to music bridged his dynamic artistry with gospel roots and now that album is reissued on red vinyl. It's the sound of an artist uniting faith and creativity and cemented him as both a musical innovator and a cultural trailblazer.

Review: Released in 1971, marking Little Richard's dynamic return to the limelight, the album blends the eccentric performer's signature explosive energy with covers of contemporary hits and originals, all while highlighting his unique vocal prowess. Tracks like 'Brown Sugar' and 'Midnight Special' reinterpret rock and soul with his plant of flair. and overall the album, which was produced by HB Barnum, balances raw rock 'n' roll with gospel-infused ballads. Though not a commercial smash, the album indeed reaffirmed his title as the King of Rock & Roll and now it comes reissued on white wax.

Review: Oklahoma roots rocker JD McPherson returns with Nite Owls, his much anticipated return, six years in the making, since the thought-to-be unbeatable Christmas album Socks released in 2018, as well as a mid-pandemic covers EP. For this nocturnal turn, McPherson alters his approach, sidelining the majority of the musicians that accompanied him on all previous sessions and live dates, and keeping only guitarist/sax player Doug Corcoran. Along with that change in personnel, comes a revised style that attempts, usually successfully, to incorporate McPherson's Duane Eddy-fashioned guitar (the album is dedicated to the late rockabilly icon who passed in May of this year) with a moderately new-wave infused sound.

Review: The 2022 remix of The Monkees' Headquarters revisits the pivotal album where the band seized creative control, marking a milestone in their musical journey. Produced by Chip Douglas, Headquarters captures Michael Nesmith, Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones and Peter Tork stepping beyond their TV personas and establishing themselves as a real band. Featuring remixed tracks from the original multitracks, the release restores the album's original pitch while expanding its stereo separation. Highlights include Nesmith's jangle-pop gem 'You Told Me', Dolenz's inventive 'Randy Scouse Git', and the Boyce & Hart-penned 'I'll Spend My Life with You'. This edition also unearths gems like Neil Diamond's 'A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You' alongside bonus tracks, alternate takes, and insightful studio chatter. Complete with a 28-page booklet this set illuminates The Monkees' creative revolt, delivering a fascinating glimpse into the band's groundbreaking rise to artistic autonomy.

Review: Eddie Piller's first volume of British Mod Sounds of The 1960s went down a real storm so it's great that he has been commissioned to do another one. This second edition is another doozy with the Acid Jazz Records and Modcast founder digging deep and turning out plenty of knowledge. Early on, British Mod bands were prone to knocking out American r&b sounds but they later evolved and took in influences from jazz-rock, prog, psychedelic soul and eastern melodies. This collection charts that musical evolution across four sides of vinyl including tunes by the OGs well as plenty of newly emerging stars from Bowie to Bolan.

Review: Eddie Piller Presents The Mod Top 100 is a fulfilling four-CD set that revisits the golden era of 1960s mod culture through a meticulously curated selection of tracks. This collection, inspired by the original Mod Top 100 compiled by Randy Cozens, offers a rich mix of r&b, soul, jazz and beat music that was integral to the iconic dancefloors of London's West End. Piller has expanded upon Cozens' influential list, including additional personal favorites from the era. The result is a vibrant homage to the Mod movement, featuring soulful voices from Doris Troy, Betty Everett, and Bessie Banks, alongside classics from James Brown, Ike and Tina Turner, and Solomon Burke. Instrumental gems from Hank Jacobs and the Ramsey Lewis Trio further enhance this comprehensive set. The release not only showcases the era's diverse sound but also serves as a tribute to Randy Cozens, whose passion and dedication helped shape the Mod scene. With new sleeve notes by Piller and support from Cozens' family, this collection is a fitting celebration of a pivotal musical and cultural moment.

Review: Eddie Piller Presents The Mod Top 40 revives the essence of '60s Mod music with a fresh twist. While many fans are familiar with the tracks, the story behind them is new and intriguing. Inspired by the Mod revival of the late 70s, Eddie delved into the original scene, guided by Randy Cozens, whose letters to music magazines in the pre-internet era led to the creation of the original Mod Top 100. Eddie's double vinyl set includes 40 essential r&b, soul, jazz and beat tracks plus personal picks for unavailable originals. This release honours Cozens' influence and offers a stylish, informative introduction to classic Mod sounds complete with new sleeve notes and track details.

Review: In 2019, soul legend P.P. Arnold made a powerful comeback with The New Adventures of... P.P. Arnold, her first studio album in decades. It saw her lay down some killer collaborations with Paul Weller, Steve Cradock, The Specials, and her son Kojo Samuel, and as such the album earned widespread praise. Arnold's UK tour ended with a standout performance at Liverpool's Grand Central Hall in October and it is that which was recorded to be presented here in her live album Live In Liverpool on earMUSIC. It's a great showcase of her commanding stage presence and effortless vocals with classics like 'The First Cut Is The Deepest' alongside some fresh new songs, all on nice heavyweight wax.

On pink and green vinyl comes 'Blue Suede Shoes', 'Blue Moon' and 'Tutti Frutti', reminiscing on a thoroughly missed era of the skiffle monarchist Presley's heyday. Watch out, as it comes with a 16-page booklet full of exclusive track breakdowns and extra notes. Thank you very much.

Review: 1972 was a pivotal year for The King. Having spent a good deal of the previous decade growing increasing focused on movies - or perhaps more accurately, getting lost in a relentless filming schedule foisted upon him - he'd reached psychological lows towards the end of the 1960s, but then re-emerged more in control of his own career decisions and re-energised, with the famous Comeback Special a major catalyst.
Three years later he hit the road for a mammoth 15 city spring tour which would spawn its own movie (aptly titled, Elvis On Tour), and set the scene for the following year's live flick follow up, Aloha From Hawaii Special. The performances proved the fact that He Had Returned, bigger and bolder than ever, as evidenced through this collection of recordings from those 1972 rehearsals.

Review: Mississippi-born rock'n'roll king Elvis Presley is credited with a rather remarkable 385 albums and almost 4000 releases though many of those are unofficial and often duplicated works. They are all packed with many of his huge hits and the unique mixes of gospel, soul, blues and rock that made him a legend. Rock It Up is one of them and comes from earlier in his career with tunes like 'I Love You Because,' 'That's All Right,' 'I'm Left You're Right and 'I Got A Woman' plus many more.

Review: American singer, musician, hip-swinger and burger eater Elvis Presley recorded Something For Everybody in late 1960 and early 1961 in both Hollywood and Tennessee. It was his first record after big discharged from military service and he soon managed to capture the form that made him such a hero in the 1950s. The album peaked at number 1 on Billboard's Top Pop LPs chart and has long since been certified gold. This is the latest in a long line of reissues across multiple formats and it comes on 180 gram pink vinyl.

Review: Latest from the Elvis Presley reissue/retrospective crock comes Memphis, the first fully comprehensive collection of Elvis Presley's hometown recordings. Yes, the entirety of Memphis was recorded, at one time or another, by the King Of Rock & Roll in the prodigal city sandwiched somewhere between Kentucky and Alabama in the American Midwest. Clocking in at 24 tracks, Memphis captures Presley from his earliest sessions at Sun Studio - which occurred 70 years ago this summer - to American Studio and Stax sessions, his 1974 hometown show and his final recordings in Graceland's Jungle Room.

Memphis is the definitive collection of Elvis Presley's hometown recordings, capturing over 111 tracks from his earliest sessions at Sun Studio to his final recordings in Graceland's Jungle Room. Produced by Ernst Jorgensen, with new mixes by Grammy-winner Matt Ross-Spang, this comprehensive set reveals Elvis' deep connection to Memphis. From the groundbreaking rock 'n' roll at Sun Studio to the heartfelt performances at American Sound in 1969, Memphis showcases Elvis' artistic evolution. The 1973 Stax sessions highlight his emotional depth during personal struggles, while the live show at the Mid-South Coliseum in 1974, complete with a full orchestra, underscores his enduring stage presence. The stripped-down Jungle Room sessions of 1976 offer an intimate look at Elvis' passion and perseverance despite his declining health. Accompanied by insightful liner notes from Robert Gordon, this release offers a profound understanding of his enduring bond with the city that shaped him.
