Review: A razzling celebration of his 50th anniversary in music, Tatsuro Yamashita is, as of this very moment, re-releasing six albums from his Moon label (all released between 1983 and 1993) on cassette. Entirely sung in English, they include original works peppered side-by-side with Beach Boys covers, making a rare experimentation in form and career-panoramic dedication. Big Wave marks the second of six: with stunning multitracked vocal arrangements, Yamashita's spin on classic Beach Boys riptides like 'The Theme From Big Wave' and 'Girls On The Beach' prove a loyal but idealistically stretched tow-ins. Each tape comes with liner notes by Yamashita himself, and those who purchase all six titles will be entered into a prize draw for a special cassette storage case.

Review: OONA Recordings presents a raw, atmospheric score by Frederikke Hoffmeier, known professionally as Puce Mary. A Danish composer and performer, Hoffmeier is known for her uncompromising and experimental approach to sound, with her work often delving into intense, dissonant soundscapes that blur the line between music and noise. With a renown for creating visceral, emotionally charged compositions, Hoffmeier's fusion of electro-acoustic elements, organic textures and industrial sounds creates a tense, disorienting atmosphere that pulls us deeper into the psychological complexities of the film. Her ability to weave unsettling and fragmented soundscapes intensifies the emotional weight, moving beyond conventional film scoring into a far more visceral experience that doesn't just accompany the visuals, but becomes integral to the narrative's emotional pull. Tracks like 'Stuck, Faces' and 'Karoline's Theme' embody the emotional undercurrents, while 'Dark Matter (Ether)' and 'Ether Hallucinations' explore the darker, more abstract elements of the narrative. Hoffmeier's innovative approach redefines the film score, making it as much a character as the people on screen.

Review: Ryan Coogler's 2025 period horror epic gets a double-barrelled musical treatment courtesy of longtime collaborator Ludwig Goransson, who helms both a star-studded original soundtrack and an original score. The Swedish composer, now LA-based, grounds the first in deep, smoky blues and soul i recorded live with Buddy Guy, Brittany Howard, Hailee Steinfeld, Rod Wave and more i while the second is a sprawling instrumental suite full of spectral folk motifs and aching melodic fragments. Both releases came out the same day as the film in April 2025, via Sony Masterworks and Sony Classical respectively. From the soulful chug of 'This Little Light of Mine' and Rod Wave's moody title track, to the resonator-led gothic tension of 'Clarksdale Love' and 'Grand Closin'', the project fuses vintage fidelity with modern production flair. The musicianship is staggering throughout, captured across Royal Studios Memphis, Electric Lady in New York and more. Goransson's use of the same Dobro guitar carried by lead character Sammie Moore adds an uncanny weight to his score i the whole thing is textured, world-building work. This is Southern Gothic by way of jazz, blues, doom metal and chamber music i and a major release in both the soundtrack and score worlds.

Review: This definitive 2025 edition of the Donkey Kong Country soundtrack has been meticulously recreated by Jammin' Sam Miller using original SNES data and studio-grade equipment. Originally released in 1994, the game's music, featuring classics like 'Aquatic Ambiance' and 'Fear Factory', redefined video game soundtracks. This triple-vinyl boxset takes in all of the many highlights with fixed playback speeds and refreshed packaging. It's a nostalgic listen for those old enough to have been gaming back in the mid-nineties but also a rich source of samples for adventurous modern producers.

Review: The Guy Ritchie-penned film The Gentlemen centres on Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey), an American in London whose luxurious lap founders on the back of a lucrative but prone marijuana empire. As he plans to retire and sell his business, a web of schemes, blackmail, and betrayal unfolds as rivals plot to seize his fortune. British composer Chris Benstead's soundtrack is elusive and sluicing, incorporating Charleston-inciting bass undertows, ticking clocks and finger-clicking inquests, as of a main character's paranoia threatening to make truly manifest.

Review: British musician and synth pioneer Thomas Dolby always leaned closer to code than chords, so this early 90s soundtrack project i made for a CGI film i plays to his strengths. Across nine tracks he switches between ambient electronics, playful digital funk and a 1930s-style pastiche that somehow made it past quality control. Five tracks have vocals with Dolby fronting most of them and sharing space with astrophysicist Dr Fiorella Terenzi on two. 'Armageddon' and 'Big Bang Backwards' toy with cinematic tension via arpeggiators and brooding pads. 'N.E.O.' and 'Planet of Lost Souls' operate in mood-setting mode, light on hooks, heavy on reverb. 'The Ascent of Man' unfolds over six short movements, each varying in form but consistent in palette. By the time 'Moonbase' wraps up with its soft-techno optimism, the tone feels locked in: speculative, slightly smug and unmistakably Dolby. It's not as sharp as The Golden Age of Wireless, or as brooding as The Flat Earth but it still lands somewhere in that familiar zone between curiosity and concept.

Review: South Korean survival drama Squid Game took the post-lockdown viewing world by storm. Depicting 456 financially desperate contestants accepting a mysterious invitation to compete in a series of deadly children’s games for a massive cash prize, the series, penned by Hwang Dong-hyuk, seemed to successfully mirror a dour reality that was true even before and despite our pre-COVID collective scotoma: no capitalist subject has the luxury of escaping debt cyclicality. Jung Jaeil’s highly idiosyncratic soundtrack is therefore complementarily ridiculous, juxtaposing elephantine trombones and toy flutes with dramatic electronic orchestral buildups, prompting audiences the world over to consider the real stakes behind the otherwise farcical situations depicted in-universe.

Review: When a sinister villain threatens to unleash Hell's gates, only a demon hunter stands between humanity and destruction. So goes the premise of the latest Devil May Cry Netflix series; and this new vinyl edition from London's Mondo Music label brings the next DmC gen, with its pulse-pounding soundtrack, to life. An uppercutting score by Power Glove helps bolster the show's uncapped energy, paired fittingly of course with 'Afterlife' by Evanescence. The particular shade of black used on the splatter vinyl edition you hear here is known as Devil Trigger Black; clearly, Mondo prefer to buck any given splatter colour naming trends that came prior.

Review: Two decades after its theatrical release, American soundtrack king John Williams' score for A.I. Artificial Intelligence finally arrives on vinyl. It's a shocker: perhaps the posthuman subject of this unmistakable Steven Spielberg film bespeaks the studio's reluctance to vinyl-ise its score, as the retro format, at first glance, hardly complements the film's futuristic theme. Though it is a late recombinant cultural move, this reissue reveals something pertinent to the film's message: that neoclassical scores aren't just for humans. As David, a robotic child programmed to love, longs to belong after being cast aside by his human family, Williams' score keeps firm to the traditional orchestral movement, refusing the easy temptation to "electronicise". This 2xLP edition is mastered by James Plotkin and housed in a gatefold sleeve featuring artwork by Sara Wong, with design contributions from Jordan Christianson and Jesse Michael Taylor, making it both a sonic and visual tribute to one of Williams' most daring works.

Review: Brady Corbet's latest film is brought to life by Daniel Blumberg's ambitious score, which perfectly complements its sweeping narrative and brutalist aesthetic. Blumberg, a British composer and musician, fuses large-scale brass orchestrations, intimate piano melodies and dynamic jazz elements. The film, which spans multiple decades and tells the story of Hungarian architect Laszlo Toth (Adrien Brody) rebuilding his life in post-war America, is mirrored in the music's broad emotional scope. Blumberg worked with a diverse group of avant-garde musicians from across Europe, capturing their performances on location to maintain a raw, organic sound. Collaborators like Axel Dorner (trumpet), Evan Parker (saxophone) and Sophie Agnel (piano) inject the score with an improvisational quality that contrasts beautifully with the meticulously crafted film score. One of the most memorable moments comes during the jazz club scene, where a quartet of jazz musicians, including Pierre Borel and Simon Sieger, deliver an electrifying live performance. The score's most striking shift occurs in the film's 1980s-set Epilogue, where Blumberg teams up with Vince Clarke, transforming the main theme into a synth-driven anthem. The score's breadth, from intimate jazz to grand orchestration, makes it as integral to the film as the visuals themselves.

Theme Of Laura (Laura's Emotions)
Review: Akira Yamaoka's sprawling, meticulously reimagined soundtrack for the 2024 remake of Silent Hill 2 finds the Japanese composer returning to his iconic score with renewed intensity and ambition. Across six vinyl LPs, Yamaoka completely reworks and expands his original vision, fusing trip-hop, industrial rock, musique concrete, and dark ambience into a haunting sonic tapestry. Familiar themesisuch as the iconic 'Theme Of Laura (Laura's Emotions)' and the chilling piano rework on 'Laura Plays The Piano (2024)'iemerge transformed, their familiar motifs drifting through layers of distorted textures, spectral synths, and disquieting percussion. Pieces like 'Phantasmagoria', 'Angel's Thanatos & Celestial Peaper', and 'The Cry Of The Nurse' amplify the sense of psychological horror, while quieter cuts ('Promise (Pragma Version)', 'Echoes Of Silence', 'Cinderella Music Box') introduce fragile melodic moments amid the oppressive tension. Rather than merely revisiting past glories, Yamaoka elevates the soundtrack into an ambitious work that holds up as a standalone listening experience, capturing both the psychological depth of Silent Hill and his own evolution as a composer. This definitive vinyl editionicarefully curated by Yamaoka himselfiis an essential immersion for fans, offering a hypnotic, unsettling, and ultimately profound journey into the darkest reaches of the psyche.

Review: Japanese composer, musician, producer and sound designer Akira Yamaoka returns to Silent Hill with a revised score for the 2024 remake of the series' most enduring entry. This new selection, released via Laced Records, reframes the original's stark minimalism through a more sculpted, textural palette. Yamaoka draws on the same core elements i trip-hop breaks, distorted guitar, low-end ambience, but shifts the emphasis toward layered production and sustained tension. The industrial motifs now feel more granular. Field recordings and musique concrete techniques surface across tracks, forming unease not through volume but pacing. Rather than a direct update the soundtrack plays like a parallel work. 'Promise (Reprise)' and 'Theme of Laura' retain their structure but show restraint in performance and mix. Newer pieces lean into atmosphere over motif, offering less thematic clarity but deeper immersion. For longtime listeners, the changes may feel understated but the logic behind them is consistent. As with the game, familiarity is refracted rather than repeated. The result is a score that sits in conversation with its predecessor rather than replacing it.

Review: Alien: Isolation was a survival horror game eleased in 2014 by Creative Assembly and published by Sega, matched with a deeply atmospheric soundtrack. Described as a "mid-quel" between the filmes Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986), it borrows the original film's claustrophobic terror perfectly. The game's soundtrack, composed by Christian Henson alongside The Flight (Joe Henson and Alexis Smith), is a standout achievement, blending Jerry Goldsmith's haunting themes from Alien with original compositions and evoking a powerful sense of dread and nostalgia. Familiar motifs like the eerie 'Main Theme' and the otherworldly 'Alien Planet' theme resurface with reverence, while innovative use of echoplexed percussion and avant-garde techniques add modern intensity. The new material enhances the game's atmosphere with orchestral tension, electronic elements and haunting vocals, particularly in tracks like 'The Descent'. Themes for the character Amanda Ripley, the android 'Joes' and the menacing Xenomorph are weaved subtly through the score, occasionally overshadowed by ambient textures but undeniably effective within the game's context. It's released on cassette tape, too, adding even more retro charm.

Review: Studio MDHR and Kristofer Maddigan’s now-legendary score arrives on a deluxe 4xLP set via iam8bit, celebrating its roots in 1930s jazz, big band and early swing. Recorded with full orchestras and session players, each track reflects Maddigan’s obsession with period detail — from the hot brass of ‘Floral Fury’ to the playful stride piano in ‘Porkrind’s Shop’. Across four records, the music dances through level themes, interludes and character motifs, capturing the humour and tension of the game without ever relying on context. Presented in a lavishly illustrated folio with gold embossing and vintage-style inserts, the package is as meticulous as the compositions themselves — a proper collector’s item that honours the work’s original intent without overdoing it.

Review: And the award for best box set idea of the year goes to Ghostly International, who’ve recognised the untapped crossover market potential between tape culture and architecturally minded 3D sandbox gaming. Both Minecraft and cassettes offer unequivocal home downtime experiences, so what better way than to celebrate such ingenious associations than with a mammoth expansion of Daniel Rosenfeld’s original soundtrack under the name C418? After many vinyl and CD reissues became fanatic cult favorites, with several sold-out color variants, now both volumes Alpha and Beta appear in opaque green; assuming the rewind button functions properly and the reels haven’t garbled round the spools, you’re in for a degradable lo-fi treat and analogue alternative listening experience; mute the laptop output and fire up the Nakamichi, you wally.

Review: There aren't many soundtracks that do as good a job of instantly summoming up the era of their creation than this. Released alongside the cult vampire flick in 1987, this ten-track album encapsulates the 80s sonic landscape, pairing bombastic rock with eerie, atmospheric compositions. This new reissue starts with 'Good Times' by INXS & Jimmy Barnes with an electrified take on The Easybeats' 60s hit. Its energetic riffs and raspy vocals create a charged introduction, though its upbeat nature contrasts the film's dark themes. The mood shifts with Lou Gramm's 'Lost in the Shadows (The Lost Boys)', a pulsing, synth-laden rock anthem. Gramm's impassioned delivery, particularly on the chilling chorus, heightens the sense of adventure and peril. Roger Daltrey's interpretation of 'Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me' brings a dramatic, soulful weight to Elton John's classic, perfectly complementing the film's themes of isolation and nocturnal existence. Echo & The Bunnymen's 'People Are Strange' - the biggest hit from the OST - pays homage to The Doors while adding a sharper, post-punk edge, fitting seamlessly into the film's eerie, outsider atmosphere. Then comes the crown jewel: Gerard McMann's 'Cry Little Sister'. This haunting, gothic anthem is the film's lifeblood, with brooding synths, ghostly choirs and McMann's desperate, evocative vocals crafting an unforgettable sonic identity. The latter half of the album maintains momentum with Eddie & The Tide's 'Power Play' and Tim Cappello's 'I Still Believe', the latter dominated by a wailing saxophone and fervent vocals. Mummy Calls' 'Beauty Has Her Way' delivers a brooding yet melodic interlude before Thomas Newman's atmospheric 'To The Shock of Miss Louise' closes the album on an eerie instrumental note. Bridging pop, new wave and gothic rock, The Lost Boys OST is as immortal as its cinematic counterpartiseductive, moody and undeniably iconic.

Review: Mark Mothersbaugh's score for the Minecraft film captures the scale and imagination of the block-built universe with impressive breadth and craft. Opening with 'I'm Coming With/Minecraft', the gentle reprise of C418's iconic piano motif immediately re-roots the listener in the game's familiar serenity, before the score confidently expands into rich, orchestral storytelling. From the swirling pastoral textures of 'Mintage' and 'Midport Village' to the adrenaline-fuelled bombast of 'Steve In The Nether' and 'Piglins Attack', there's a sense of real narrative motion here i a soundtrack that grows and transforms alongside the adventure. 'Chicken Fight Club' adds playful energy with its electric guitar flourishes, while 'Heroic Henry/Minecraft' blends heroism and emotion through bold brass and soaring strings. Mothersbaugh's new themes are woven with care, recurring just enough to ground the journey without overwhelming it. Even at its most cinematic, the score never loses sight of Minecraft's underlying spirit: openness, invention, and charm. Hints of electronics and choral passages nod to the game's legacy while keeping the tone fresh. It's a lovingly assembled, big-hearted soundtrack i full of momentum, melody and just the right amount of mischief.

Review: French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet and the English Chamber Orchestra revisit Dario Marianelli's score for Joe Wright's 2005 period drama, reissued here for its twentieth anniversary. The music remains understated and structurally simple, leaning on recurring motifs rather than overt drama. 'Dawn' and 'Liz On Top Of The World' open the set with solo piano, slow and unadorned. 'The Living Sculptures of Pemberley' and 'Georgiana' bring in light chamber textures with little variation in tempo or tone. On side B, 'Another Dance' and 'The Secret Life of Daydreams' add weight through denser ensemble writing. 'Darcy's Letter' and 'Your Hands Are Cold' hint at emotional crescendo without pushing the dynamic range. 'A Postcard to Henry Purcell' nods briefly to baroque form, while 'Mrs Darcy' and the 'End Credits' wrap the suite with quiet symmetry. The pressing comes on transparent mauve vinyl with a booklet of film stills, but the music is left untouched: soft, linear, and deliberately restrained.
