Susumu Yokota is an artist whose rich legacy will continue to be pored over for decades to come. Some may remember the Japanese producer for delicate, pastoral electronica, while others celebrate his refined and highly developed take on the techno tradition. As 246, he released just two 12"s back in 1995 on Reel Musiq, but now the project is getting the reappraisal it deserves via the emergent Cosmic Soup label. On this first volume of archival and unreleased material, we're treated to the woozy reverie of cult classic jacker 'Do Up' and its attendant bouncy, organ-licked house neighbour 'Clear Up'. 'Deck Up' brings an acidic urgency, while 'Escape' romps through swinging 909 bump with glee. Throughout this double 12" drop, Yokota's effervescent melodic nous shines through, making it essential for any lovers of expressive, energetic techno as made by a true titan of the genre.
