Like so much of the best music in the world, reggae was created on the streets, in the ghettos and amongst the lower income and more marginalised communities. It was a way out for those who excelled at the form but one that took a lot of work. Inspired by the UK and Jamaican sound system culture of his time, Monkey Jhayam was one of the first artists to build a solid and prominent career. He went on to break several barriers and collaborate with top artists from all over the world and here he features on an interpretation of a Johnny Osbourne roots classic, 'Truths & Rights' while 'Great Old Men' in the flip is just as crucial.
