In many ways, it makes sense that Chicago label Stripped & Chewed - home of the Black Madonna and Borrowed Identity, amongst others - should look to the city's past for inspiration. This 12", from former Virgo Four man Merwyn Saunders under his little used Merle alias, first surfaced on the Windy City's Christabel Records imprint back in 1999. Remarkably, it still sounds fresh, with Saunders pursuing a deep, funky and fluid vibe. There's much to enjoy, from the tactile disco-house sweetness of "Mimi Loves To Dance" and liquid deepness of "Beautiful", to the boompty era jazz-house flex of "You Make Me Laugh", and chunky brilliance of "2000 (And We're Still Here)".
