Less J is a low-key producer who first popped up in 2019 with a single on Sound Society called Old Family Tapes. That title informs the overall sound world they explore within the framework of deep house, taking some cues from Moodymann's dusty, meandering approach to sampling and arrangement to create some genuinely soulful, head-tripping gear. This new EP on their own Law Heart label gets way out to the fringes of deep house on the haunted hoedown '3 Hermanos', while the marginally more strident 'Los Cuadraos' rides a sublime, blunted chord loop into heads-down infinity. 'Maravillosa Corbera' has a shuffling, finger-clicking groove to die for, and then Claudia Urbano lends her piano and vocal touch to 'I'll Be Cooking You', calling to mind the likes of 'Long Hot Sexy Nights' and sounding absolutely on point.
