In the past three decades, American organist and trumpeter Joey DeFrancesco has become synonymous with what he calls "a swinging Philly sound"; a strain of jazz shot through with soul and plenty of classic influences. "In The Key Of The Universe", then, is something of a departure, with the prolific musician turning his hand to spiritual jazz for the very first time. That means that for every smooth, dreamy and drifting composition on the album, there's another that's notably wilder and weirder, with DeFrancesco's energetic and on-point organ solos only adding to the hallucinogenic mood. While it may be a curveball, the results are uniformly impressive. In fact, it could be his most interesting and inspired album for years.
