"New York Is Killing Me" was a definite highlight of Gil Scott Heron's I'm New Here, while the subsequent Jamie xx version taken from the duo's collaborative LP of last year was undoubtedly one of 2011's most ubiquitous tracks. And rightly so, with the iconic blues drenched drawl of the much missed singer perfectly matched to the unbridled drama of the retiring producer's highly charged production. It's clearly a track that resonated deeply with Modern Artifacts duo Ashley Beedle and Darren Morris, whose own edit has been a potent weapon of their DJ sets for a while now and has been granted this full release thanks to the permission of XL Recordings and Gil Scott-Heron's estate. Taking its cue from the original, this Space Blues Rework teasing out all new levels of voodoo brilliance, swamping the handclap rhythms with underlying droning psychedelics which allow Gil's powerful voice and backing quartet the space to captivate.
