Aaliyah's second album was released in 1996, when she was just 17, and she was already one of the most commanding artists in modern R&B. Working closely with Missy Elliot and Timbaland on a number of the tracks, she made a significant step on from her debut with a revitalised and forward-leaning sound, and all while finishing drama school and preparing to star in Romeo Must Die. One In A Million is solid gold start to finish, and given how costly original pressings of it can be on the second hand market, this reissue is long overdue so grab it while you can.

Review: This is a deluxe reissue of a real pop classic from back in 1997. ABC is a group that traces its origins back to Vice Versa, a Sheffield band formed in 1977 by Stephen Singleton and Mark White. They released the Music 4 EP after founding Neutron Records and Martin Fry, creator of the fanzine Modern Drugs, interviewed Vice Versa before later joining as synth player. By 1980, the band transformed into ABC, with Fry assuming lead vocals. The lineup included Fry, Glenn Gregory of Heaven 17, and Keith Lowndes. Though their debut album received acclaim from critics, it didn't achieve widespread commercial success. Despite this, ABC's fusion of pop and electronic elements laid the groundwork for their future iconic sound.

Review: Even reading the words All Saints takes us back to simmer times, when pop music seemed far more innocent and pop stars - the female ones at least - wore far more clothes. The British group's self-titled debut album was cooler and smarter than many of their candied peers (Spice Girls, we're looking at you) and blended effortlessly soulful vocals with rich, atmospheric production. From start to finish, the album lays down emotionally charged and honest lyrics. The production is lush yet minimal, allowing the powerful vocals to take centre stage, with classics like 'Never Ever', 'I Know Where It's At' and 'Lady Marmalade ('98 remix)' all still oozing a nice new soul and r&b edge.

White Did It amongst others. The beats throughout are highly addictive with plenty of them ready to make you get up and dance. There are plenty of crossovers between future house and bass music making it one of her most accomplished works to date.

Review: Kate Bush enjoyed an unlikely renaissance (and a welcome boost to her bank balance, no doubt) with the younger generation when her music was used in iconic scenes in the hit Netflix show Stranger Things. She has long been a revered pop great who always had an outlier sound which despite that saw great commercial success. For that reason, she was invited to the BBC for a Christmas Special in 1979 and that recording is now pressed up just in time for the festival season. It features plenty of her best moments which will bring great warmth to the winter including the likes of 'December Will be Magic Again' and 'The Man With The Child' plus a version of Peter Gabriel's 'Here Comes the Flood' featuring the former Genesis frontman himself.

Their next single 'Take' was just as big and in 1985 came their debut album with further hits 'Thinking of You', 'Castles In The Air' and later on some standout and standalone singles 'I Can't Get Enough of You Baby' and 'Things Could Be Beautiful.' Review: Who can forget Maneskin's triumph for rock on the Eurovision stage as they brought the win for Italy in 2021? In Damiano David, the Italian band have a natural born frontman who is now having his Harry Styles moment and stepping out on his own and forging a distinctive solo career to rival the day job. Despite being labelled a glam rock outfit, Maneskin's pop element always shone brightly and so for his debut solo album David has tapped more heavily into that side of his. David's embraced co-writes and in terms of the production he has thrown the kitchen sink at it to get a massive sound. 'The First Time' has more hooks than a fisherman's tackle box and a sweeping epic Sprinsteen-esque feel. Another highlight 'Next Summer', lets David's vocals star, but the arrangement is unexpectedly massive. Despite its sparse beginning it turns into an orchestral showstopper indicative of the seemingly vast resources the label have had to craft this beauty.

Review: American singer-songwriter Lana Del Rey's seventh album Chemtrails Over the Country Club features a cover of Joni Mitchell's 1970 song 'For Free' but otherwise features lyrics that pertain to her "stunning girlfriends" and "beautiful siblings." The sound of the record is therefore more airy and sunny, expansive and less claustrophobic that previous works. This lighter sound suits her - not that previous album aren't also essential - with an emotional innocence and vulnerability shining through each song. Folky, nuanced and atmospheric, this might be one of Del Ray's best yet.

The album rather underperformed at first but has since grown in popularity with its contemporary pop production and Finneas's accessible lyrics resonating with fans old and new. 'I Lost a Friend' is a strong electropop ballad with minimal bass guitar, piano and drums under layered harmonies and is archetypal of this record's sound.

Review: If you're over the age of 30 it's probably quite alarming to think David Gray's monumental smash hit single 'Babylon' is now almost a quarter century old. A track that appeared everywhere, from TV ads to films to the radio for the next 25 years or so, it's the sort of song that artists can find it incredibly hard to come back from. Career defining, but also limiting, its enormous success melding with the very identity of the person who made it. Dear Life, Gray's 13th studio album and his first since 2021's Skellig, proves how unfair that familiar pattern can be. Deft songwriting and first class musicianship abound, although the record is unlikely to win any new disciples - this is very much Gray doing Gray the right way, a soft rock-pop-jazz-tronica workout that's easy to get along with, and get a little lost in - it's going to be just what the therapist ordered for those already converted.

Review: In celebration of the tenth anniversary of Grimes' 4AD debut, this album was reissued in 2022, and now it gets reissued once more as a great reminder of the flourishing of electronic and experimental pop music in the late naughties and early tens. Claire Boucher's third album remains a standout lauded for its innovative blend of ethereal, futuristic sounds. At the time, Visions was named one of the Best Albums of the 2010s by Pitchfork, who described it as "human-generated cyborg pop" and it still very much feels enigmatic and exciting even years later.
