Arlo Parks is now a hugely successful indie artist with many great tunes to her name. One of them came back in 2019 in the form of her Cola EP back when she was just 18 years old. It showcased her smoky, soulful and mournful vocal skills with gentle guitar accoutrements and plenty of dusty vinyl crackle for added authenticity. That title tune is here in all its tender glory while on the flip is 'George' which is yet another standout single that has slightly more upbeat lyrics and prouder production. What a talent she is.

Review: Arlo Parks is an artist who manages to make music that is both precise and intimate. She has won over fans and critics many times over the last few years and not least with Super Sad Genration, which was a collection of her EPs to date. It is that album's title cut which makes it onto this 7" alongside 'Paperbacks'. The a-side is tender sound with lovelorn vocals and mournful narratives over wistful melodies and downbeat drums. The flip is even more lo-fi, with dusty drum sounds and another closely mic-ed vocal whisper that draws you in deep.

Review: Prom Nite is the latest new album from deck wizard ad beat maker DJ Yoda. He announced it and teased the sounds to expect with Feel Like Home - a new single featuring the incredible House Gospel Choir. It's a single that gets you up off the floor after sad news and was recorded in the depths of lockdown. Says Yoda, "It felt great to collaborate with the House Gospel Choir, as they're about as positive, energetic, creative and fun a bunch of people as you'll find anywhere. I'm always looking for the next thing to try out, and to dip my toes into the world of soulful gospel music was a heart-warming process."

Review: Legendary turntablist and acclaimed beat maker DJ Yoda is back with a new album Prom Nite this month. Just before the full-length drops comes this single from it on essential 7". It follows on from the well-received 'Feel Like Home' 45rpm last month and this time offers more well-conceived and carefully sought-out fusions. The a-side 'My Energy' features Eva Lazarus. It is a lovely soulful slow jam that has a breakup melancholy to it and lovely doo-wop vibes. Completing this package is the flip side 'Lesson 1956' (feat Jamie Cullum & DJ Woody) which is another great revisiting of Americana.

Review: Pioneering deck technician, scratch DJ, hip-hop master and sometime restaurateur DJ Yoda is doing a fine job of showing us his more sensitive time of late. After his super sweet 7" with Nubya Garcia he now joins forces with Joel Culpepper. This most sublime vocalist croons over laid back and jazzy beat work from Yoda. Deep, tumbling bass adds weight to 'London Fields' while Culpepper's soulful and pained vocal really hits the mark in some style. An instrumental is included on the flip which is just as blissed out, but allows the noodling sax more room to breathe.

Review: DJ Yoda is a pioneering turntables, scratch DJ and hip-hop master who has defined all those scenes for more than 20 years. For this one though he leaves behind his high energy sounds for a much more mature and grown up beat with Edo.G and Nubya Garcia. 'Roxbury' is a smooth bit of deep cut boombap with gently tumbling toms and smooth flows from Edo.G. The icing on the cake is the dreamy sax work from new school star Nubya Garci. As well as the original, an instrumental is included on the flip. Both sides of this one hit different. Must cop.

Review: Fans of Palace will likely have been supporting the solo guise of the band's ex-bassist, William Dorey, for some time. Currently on album number four, praise has been thrown at the unarguably talented outlier from various corners of the music press, despite the fact he remains elusive in terms of both live shows and anything close to the traditional publicity circus. A man doing things very much on his own terms. "I Didn't Know" is a two-track, or rather two-version single release taken from that last LP. A song that feels out of time - oozing 1960s trippy folk-esque trappings - and yet beyond any notions of trend or era. Packed with wonderful musicality, from string harmonies to acoustic guitar-set rhythms, it's as nice as it is accomplished and universally accessible.

Review: If you don't know William Dorey already then chances are you're about to realise you've been missing out on quite the artist. Working as Skinshape, he's managed to garner a quiet cult following for his relatively quiet music, designed to unwind to, allow worries of the day to unwind, and dissipate into a concoction of psychedelic pop, downtempo electronica and dubby grooves.
Turn Away, a two-track single featuring titular piece and 'Dreams of Panama' is the latest case in point. Sublime melodies and deceptively advanced acoustic guitar work set to lackadaisical rhythms and beat patterns, soothing brass and synthesised strings helping capture a real mood. Which, specifically, is all about slowing down, and taking time to appreciate the moment. Designed to transport you to far away places, real and imagined, it sounds reductive to say these are bonafide travelling tunes but they are. The real joy is they also sound incredible when standing still.

Review: Skinshape released their 'Arrogance is the Death of Men' album back in December 2020 and now its title single is pulled out and dropped on 7". The album was a superbly laidback and soulful mix of indie sounds that fans of the likes of Khruangbin, El Michels Affair, Tame Impala and Bonobo all loved. This laidback single has the main man Will Dorey on vocals with top musicianship and dreamy grooves all washing over you. Add in tight drums from Ivan Kormanak and a flip side gem in 'The Eastern Connection' and this is a real doozy.

Review: Skinshape has picked up plenty of fans since dropping their album Arrogance is the Death of Men in December 2020. It was a lush and laidback affair with star-gazing melodies, pitch-shifted guitar licks and plenty of sumptuous tambourines. They now sit with the likes of Khruangbin and El Michels Affair as leaders in that field and here we have some of the singles from the album press dup to 7". The title track also comes on 45rpm this month but this one has the rueful 'Another Day' on one side and alluring 'Watching From The Shadows' on the flip.

Review: Based out of Brooklyn, New York, The Still Brothers is a group made up of two childhood friends, Andrew LeCoche of Ula Ruth and Evan Heinze from The Shacks. They started their musical adventure way back in the 6th grade. In the decade since they have managed to record and tour with their own respective groups, as well as work on their own distinctive brand of indie together. Here they tap up Sloshy for a feature on a new 7" that comes via Lewis. 'It's Not Over' is a dreamy cut lush vocal harmonies and lo-fi drums making for a beautifully melancholic sound. 'Crazy' has slightly more primate drum breaks and the Shoshy is just as smooth.
