Experimental/Electronic
13 (13:04)
Mecanica No 1 (4:45)
LVIV (8:25)
Review: Nenad Markovic's four releases for ESP Institute were amongst the strongest releases on the label to date. Hopes, then, are naturally high for the Serbian's debut on Ron Morelli's L.I.E.S imprint. Opener "13" sees the Belgrade producer indulging his melancholic side, with bittersweet chords and mutant electronics wrapping themselves around a dense, Afro-influenced rhythm. "Mecanica Number 1" takes this new-found rhythmic funk into a more distorted, L.I.E.S-ready direction - think ricocheting hits, post-industrial textures and redlined rhythms - while "LVIV" sounds like the aural accompaniment to a druggy jog through a South American rainforest after dark.

Ne-Decline A (121 Roland MC 303) (7:43)
O Tom Potom S.T (6:16)
Review: Last year, it was unofficially announced that Serbian musical misfit Nenad Markovic (AKA the snappily-named 33.10.3402) had delivered an album to L.I.E.S. While we're still waiting for that set, this 12" marks the experimental techno and ambient producer's third EP for Ron Morelli's prolific imprint. He begins in predictably creepy, otherworldly fashion, effortlessly blending backwards percussion, snatched field recordings, heavy bass and ghostly electronics on epic A-side "100 Drone Radio Passive Scape". Things get a little more upbeat on B1 cut "No Decline A (121 Roland MC303), where manipulated, acid-style electronic lines rise and fall over a metronomic kick-drum. Meanwhile, Markovic's innate ability to turn experimental productions into atmospheric ambient classics is once again showcased on closing track "O Tom Protom ST".

Review: Under his other alias, D.K, French producer 45 ACP has produced some of the most blindingly joyous electronic music of recent times - colourful, vibrant, synthesizer-heavy fare capable of bringing brightness to even the most depressing of days. While some of that mood enhancing melodiousness can be heard on Change of Tone, his first full-length for L.I.E.S, for the most it's a much more melancholic affair. While the chords are beautiful and the subtle rhythms pleasingly evocative, there's a sadness at the heart of the album that's not present on his other work. It is, though, a sublime set, delivering a range of tracks that quietly tug at the heartstrings in the most enjoyable of ways.

Graveyard Shift (3:51)
Review: Having recently devoted more of his time to the breezy, melodious bliss of the D.K project, Dang Khoa-Chau once again dons the 45 ACP alias for a more downbeat E.P on L.I.E.S. It's arguably far more accessible than his previous work for the label under the now familiar moniker, but still pleasingly left-of-centre. There's much to admire throughout, from the poignant melodies, drifting keys and spaced-out drums of "Hang In There", and Marimba-laden deep space techno of "Smoked Out", to the clarinet-laden ambient textures of bittersweet closer "Graveyard Shift". While opener "Slick Response" - a bubbling, ear-pleasing chunk of metronomic techno - feels a little more positive, it's still largely melancholic in tone.

Review: During the early '90s, Adam 'X' Mitchell - brother of the more celebrated breakbeat techno producer Frankie Bones - made some of the most intense, mind-altering and rave-igniting techno on the planet. For proof, check this killer compilation of material he released (under a variety of aliases) between 1992 and '94.It puts wild, intense, brain-melting TB-303 acid lines right at the heart of the action, variously wrapping them around jacking drums ('Faces of Death',' Octane Propellant'), body-contorting electro beats ('Electropolis'), and breathlessly pounding Teutonic techno rhythms ('Acid Over Wiesbaden'). If you like your techno to sound psychedelic, ragged, aggressive and unfeasibly heavy, then you need this in your life

Review: This year marks 30 years since the launch of New York's first dedicated record shop (and later label) Sonic Groove. There are numerous celebratory releases planned, but first L.I.E.S. is treating us to a fast-paced sprint through the "acid archives" of Sonic Groove co-founder Adam "X" Mitchell and his sometime production partner Jimmy Crash. The EP boasts two significant early '90s cuts from their collaborative X-Crash project: the insanely raw, fast and druggy insanity of "Executioner" and the squelchy thrust of "Sick Trick", where psychedelic acid lines buzz around another bombastic techno groove. The 12" also includes a couple of Adam X solo missives, with the previously unreleased acid techno slammer "Swamp Thing" arguably being the EP's standout track.

Beginning with the contorted noise soundscape of 'Speaking Via Telepathy' he soon unleashes the seething brain bash of 'Sensor-Tised' followed by the strobing tunnel vision of 'Walking Through Walls'. Elsewhere, there's more dystopian themes aplenty as heard on the static TBM pulse of 'They've Instilled Fear In Us', or the pitch black war funk of 'Leading The Way' and the muscular slow burner 'Leading The Way'.

Review: For their latest foray into the world of the ghostly, intense and unusual, L.I.E.S has turned to fellow New Yorker Adam Mitchell, a man whose career as a techno producer stretches back to the 1990s. Here, though, he's appearing under his lesser-known Admx-71 alias, a pseudonym used for his more experimental endeavours. Sitting somewhere between unsettling ambience, horror-influenced IDM, analogue electro, industrial and out-there experimentation, the album's 11 tracks bristle with bright ideas. While there are undeniably dark and hard-to-handle moments, Mitchell's default setting is more quietly melodious, resulting in a set that impresses with its' alien melodies, spacey electronics and fuzzy, distortion-soaked rhythms.

Nuclear Hysterics (6:28)

Neutron Absorber (7:04)
Review: Brooklyn-born Berliner Adam X returns to both LIES and his industrial and experimental ambient fusionist guise ADMX 71. A succinct three-track attack, Adam's first ADMX material since 2015's Coherent Abstractions continues the bleak and frank theme: "Nuclear Hysterics" counters distorted kickdrum chaos with fear and sudden shards of space, "Dire Situation" creates raw, physical suspense with its ricochet build up and ominous oscillations before the kick ignites our march into the fearful unknown while "Neutron Absorber" is the aftermath where Adam includes more space for thought, action and reaction. Immense, as always.

Disentangle Me

Cryptic Language
Review: Given the focus on tough club sounds favoured by label boss Ron Morelli, a release from Adam X on L.I.E.S. makes perfect sense and in retrospect it seems weird it's not happened sooner. As the owner of the Sonic Groove label, and the man behind the now closed New York record store of the same name, Adam X has been part of the fabric of the city's techno heritage for decades, long championing the harder, industrial end of the genre and putting on parties in the city from the '80s onwards. Now based in Berlin, the producer continues to be an important presence in techno with continuing releases on the Sonic Groove label and a multitude of production aliases including the Traversable Wormhole moniker. Coming under his experimental-leaning ADMX-71 alias, the three-track Redacted Files is described by the label as "a unique take on the traditional EBM sound" which is more than evident on the basis of "Disentangle Me" alone, a track that should satisfy those who prefer their EBM dark, slow, and full of sinister vocals.

Review: The latest missive in the L.I.E.S. ongoing series of collaborative EPs brings together Cititrax regular An-I (AKA sometime leftfield disco maverick Doug Lee) and Berlin-based experimental electronics maverick Unhuman. The pair begins in forthright fashion, moving from the racing drum machine heartbeats, rhythmic noise and mangled yelps of "Five To Nine", to the doomy bass, triple-time beats and clanking metallic hits of post-punk number "Hate Thy Neighbour". Over on side B they mutilate electro beyond almost all recognition on the alien insanity of "Entschuldigung" before lolloping towards a conclusion with the fuzzy industrial funk thrust of "Cannibals".

The Track Of A Storm (7:17)

Review: A fine full debut on LIES for Antenes, the production handle of Brooklyn DJ and modular explorer Lori Napolean, whose "PBX-555" contribution to the label's 2013 compilation Music For Shut ins was a real highlight. It's worth digging further on the internet into the self-built modular production methods Antenes employs for her recordings, but the three tracks on display here show a thrilling abstract approach that has you pulling back the needle again and again. A-side hogger "The Track Of A Storm" hones in on a similar minimalist approach to recent Mix Mup outings, whilst "Fire Rises" is a wholly unpredictable drum track. Final cut "St Antoine" sees Antenes veer off into fizzing stripped back electro replete with corroded bleeps.

The Sleeziest (9:57)
Whats On Yr Mind (7:04)

Quick Escape (6:03)
Review: Given the forthright, analogue-powered sound of his productions, Faster Action member Robert Bergman seems a neat fit with Ron Morelli's L.I.E.S. label. For that reason, it's surprising to learn that this self-titled EP is his first release on the long-running U.S imprint. He's pulled out all the stops too, opening with the ten-minute journey through gently unsettling electronic motifs, locked-in machine grooves and odd noises that is "The Sleaziest". Arguably even more off kilter is the Chicago jack/industrial EBM fusion of "What's On Yr Mind", while "All The Way" is a disconcerting slab of spaced-out lo-fi techno. As for closing cut "Quick Escape", it cannily joins the dots between wayward, psychedelic acid and breathless EBM rhythms.

Review: Under his Bookworms name, Nik Dawson was responsible for one of THE label defining LIES records in 2012's Love Triangles and it's nice to see his weird streak been channelled good and proper on this new 12" for Ron Morelli's outfit. Clearly inspired by his ongoing musical experiments with Steve Summers at Confused House HQ, these four Bookworms cuts bristle with odd energy, coaxing you into experiment different notches on the pitch adjust. For example "Touchless Automatic" sounds all the more hypnotic and druggy with the tempo pitched right down, whilst "Coaxial Electric Slide" feels like an Acido track done Brooklyn style. There is a dank feel to the modular strains throughout "Exotic Auto Boutique" that you can almost touch whilst "Control That" perversely sounds like Dawson is barely making a faltering drum machine work. Wonderful chaos in other words.

Review: Since donning the Broken English Club alias in 2014, British techno veteran Oliver Ho has been rather prolific. White Rats, his third full-length under the pseudonym, appears almost a year to the day from the release of its predecessor. Like that set (The English Beach), the album sees Ho explore his industrial and EBM influences, serving up nine fuzzy, intoxicating and distorting cuts of refreshingly high quality. There are moody and percussive dancefloor workouts, of course - see "Funny Games", the acid-fired "Let's Play" and metallic "God Man Dog" - but also a high number of clandestine soundscapes that sit somewhere between Cabaret Voltaire's ambient excursions and some of Throbbing Gristle's more notable beat-free compositions.

Review: British techno veteran Oliver Ho has released some fine material as Broken English Club since debuting the alias back in 2014. The English Beach, Ho's second BEC full-length and first for L.I.E.S, is the audio equivalent of a trip to a run-down North Sea coastal resort on a wet Wednesday in November. Full of end-of-days electronics, stripped-back industrial techno, moody minimal wave shufflers and bubbly EBM workouts, it's as authentic a tribute to early '80s electronic experimentalism as you're likely to hear all year. Highlights include the Nitzer Ebb style bounce of "Pylon", the foreboding, desolate electronica of "Rust Ballad", the angry electro moodiness of "Carrion" and the rolling, organ-laden autumnal bliss of "The English Beach".

Review: Blimey Marcos is on one here! The somewhat morbid title to Cabral's second album for LIES should hint at what to expect from the six tracks within as the New Yorker lays out a masterclass in grinding, sonic bedlam. It's clear Cabral's experiments with the Chemotex project for The Trilogy Tapes have spurred a new level of creativity and darkness in him and it's thrilling to see how far he takes it on Buried Alive Twice. Forget any dancefloor pretences; this album is all about grinding sound design with highlights in the shape of the foreboding stutter of "That's Not A Bathroom" (featuring someone called Suzi) and "Shallows" which sounds like thick globules of acid being attacked by a swarm of locusts.

Review: Marcos Cabral's production renaissance under the cultured guidance of LIES boss Ron Morelli continues apace here with Capri Social a fine EP shaped addendum release to False Memories, the double LP issued on the label earlier this year. If you liked the rough round the edges approach of the archival material on that album, you'll want to check the three tracks here as Cabral burrows ever further into the crawlspace between house and techno. Spreading across the whole of the A Side, "Capri Social" is the track most people will immediately gravitate towards, the warbling melodies and loose kicks doused in a coat of static that grabs you immediately. It's trumped however by "Haitian Priest" which seemingly aligns on a similar psychedelic groove that label mate Jahiliyya Fields has found of late. Do check "Goetz" if you like some playful melodic fading in your booming techno.

Review: False Memories sees New York producer Marcos Cabral present an archival display of his earliest productions, culling 14 tracks from material recorded straight to tape over a two year period from 1998 onwards. Released on Ron Morelli's tireless LIES, this double LP is a world away from the edits and well judged deep house that Cabral has been making in recent years for On The Prowl and Hamilton Dance or his work as Runaway alongside Jacques Renault. Recorded using simple WAV looping software called Acid, False Memories is abstract from the off with the kick drums on opening track "Downhill" barely able to break free from the fog of tape dust that clogs up the channels. Lop sided dub techno excursions follow, sitting next to the kind of heavy beat tracks that arguably could have inspired the concrete approach of Fachwerk and loose, experimental fare.

Entro & Terri - "The Cap"
Review: Must grip 12" sampler from the must grip double CD compilation Music For Shut-Ins issued by LIES at the end of their most impressive year so far! If you've not indulged in the full compilation, it's a perfect primer for how busy Ron Morelli and co. have been throughout this year and offers a hint at some of the artists who will be featuring on LIES over the course of the next twelve months. This sampler picks out three considered highlights that do a neat job of showing how diverse the label has become, with Marcos Cabral's "Dancing On Manhattan" gleefully hogging the A Side. Over the course of it's twelve minute duration, the track maintains a straight up pulse of jacking drums and melancholic keys to draw you further into a introspective headspace. On the flip Entro & Teri explore murky, abstracted Actress style terrain on the cap and sandwiched in-between the two is perhaps our new favourite LIES track, the ebullient exercise in breakbeat house that is "The Zoo" by Beautiful Swimmers.

There are clearly Derrick May-influenced cuts such as the funky opener 'In The Night' and the evocative hi-tech soul of 'Digital Age' on the first side, while the robotic grooves inspired by first wave Detroit continue over on the flip with 'Factory Settings' benefitting from the same 909 syncopated rhythms and the 'Transmat worship' of 'On & On'.

Review: There's been a 'zero f*cks given' approach to their fifth anniversary year from LIES, which is very in keeping with the label's ethos; no resting on laurels or back slapping, just plain good music for the freaks. Having issued fine records from Antenes, Marcos Cabral, Randomer, Overdose and a whole host of others, Ron Morelli's last call of duty for the year is another mini-album shaped journey into the crazed asylum that is the mind of Eric Copeland. Six tracks deep, Jesus Freak is described as "addictive as it is confusing with its screwed vocal hooks and demented twang heard throughout," and listeners should expect more of Copeland's signature blend of cut-up samples, deranged loops, and barely-controlled chaos.

Sprk Tha Dust
Review: Repress alert! Whilst we were busy polishing off the Quality Street over Christmas, Ron Morelli decided to launch another LIES offshot with the LIES XMAS series - Delroy Edwards helms the inaugural release. Those who indulged in Edwards LIES debut 4 Club Use Only will see the word "curveball" flash before their eyes when listening to A Side track "Heart & Soul" a production which demonstrates the newcomer is fully capable of a more subtle approach. It's a simple but compelling production where brisk claps are underpinned by a chiming melodic motif and a calming, titular vocal hook that sounds naggingly familiar. It's backed with "Sprk The Dust" a wholly more aggressive affair which submerges a chopped up Lil Wayne deep beneath a relentless 150bpm jack hammering beat. Check YouTube for a rather good fan video for the latter btw!

Drop Dead
Review: Operating at a speed of releases that shouldn't be possible with your label boss is in the midst of a 3 month European tour, the LIES juggernaut spits out its latest slab of essential, grizzled floor weaponry in the shape of this White Owl EP from Delroy Edwards. This three track release maintains the high BPM trajectory of Edwards previous LIES transmissions, with the A Side title track a rugged, heads down DJ tool that could feasibly have been lifted from the unreleased archives of Dance Mania. The same no nonsense approach is retained on the flip, though "The Fast Lane" is markedly less aggressive, relying on a central warbling motif to capture your attention; "Drop Dead" winds it back to the stripped back, gnarled kick drum flex. Strictly for the DJs.
