Descendants (5:41)
Descendants (Tresillo remix) (5:59)
Descendants (Juan Atkins remix) (5:51)
Review: Given his impressive credentials and track record, you'd expect any new release from former Galaxy 2 Galaxy and Los Hermanos member Esteban Adame to be rather good. Predictably, "Descendants" is rather special - a spacey, melody-rich chunk of Motor City positivity that recalls some of Underground Resistance's finest moments. Tresillo's interpretation is trippy, hypnotic and bass-heavy, with all manner of additional percussion hits and looped melody lines to catch the ear. On the flip, the mighty Juan Atkins takes the track in a completely different direction, combining Adame's spacey synths with jazz-fuelled electro beats and jammed out organ lines of his own.

Kos (6:00)
ZZZZ (4:13)
Track 4 (5:31)
F9 (4:16)
Review: On this latest drop on EPM, the steadfast UK techno label welcomes steadfast UK techno titan Mark Broom for a collaboration with Australian in Berlin Patrik Carrera. The result is four slices of no-nonsense jackhammers from two experts in the field, leading in with the edgy loops and bludgeoning kicks of 'Kos' and neatly stepping over to the shoulder-shaking pressure of 'ZZZZ'. 'Track 4' features one of those deadly chord stabs which just lands squarely between the eyes, while 'F9' rides the cymbals mercilessly and keeps an abundance of funk in the low end - pure dancefloor dynamite in action from two well-versed detonators.

Floorplan - "Never Grow Old" (Mark Broom dubplate mix) (5:38)
Mark Broom - "Jungle" (5:21)
Floorplan - "He Can Save You" (Re-Plant) (8:53)
Review: Some tip-top Transatlantic business here, as EPM Music brings together Motor City legend Robert Hood AKA Floorplan, and veteran UK techno producer Mark Broom. There's a treat on side A as Broom finally allows us access to one of his secret weapons: a previously dubplate-only remix he did of the Floorplan gospel-techno throbber "Never Grow Old". Broom's version is tough and percussive, but also makes great use of rumbling bass, restless organ stabs and glassy-eyed late night rave riffs. Broom's own techno jack-track "Jungle" - a blizzard of distorted percussion and wild electronic noises - opens side B, before Hood offers up a chunky "Re-Plant" of classic Floorplan roller "He Can Save You". It not only features spoken word preacher-man vocals, but also a mind-altering riff reminiscent of Lil' Louis classic "French Kiss".

Ritual/Shaker
Cat: EPM 10V. Rel: 16 Apr 15

Techno
Floorplan - "Ritual" (7:34)
Robert Hood - "Shaker" (6:36)
Review: British techno veterans Jonas Stone and Oliver Way have pulled off something of a coup here, not only by persuading Robert Hood to appear on their EPM Music imprint, but also by including a track from the Detroit legend's Floorplan alias (amazingly, Hood has previously kept the two projects entirely separate). Naturally, both tracks hit home hard. "Shaker" is prime Hood - an intoxicating, no-holds-barred techno looper built around a killer groove, foreboding chords and occasional vocal samples. On the Floorplan side, Hood reaches for the gospel organs, filtering and looping them up over a thunderous kick drum and typically relentless ride cymbals. As usual with Hood Floorplan material, there's enough soul in the machines to impress even the pickiest techno buyer.

Robert Hood - "Shadows" (5:24)
Ben Sims - "Xotnuc" (5:18)
James Ruskin - "There Was A Time" (5:27)
Mark Broom - "The Three Swords" (5:17)
Review: All the secret weapons a techno DJ needs right now on one handy EP, courtesy of Netherlands-based EPM Music. The minister of techno himself Robert Hood is first up on EPM20 EP1, kicking off the A side with his idiosyncratic sound as always on the chiming and hypnotic cyclicality of 'Shadows', followed by Hardgroove chief Ben Sims who brings the polyrhythmic tribal funk as always on 'Xotnuc'. Over on the flip, UK veterans James Ruskin and Mark Broom appear, fresh off their recent Deadhand release, albeit separately. The former's contribution is the austere pressurizer 'There Was A Time' which ventures into truly ominous territory.

Undoubted
Review: Paul Mac is one of the UK's real techno veterans, a producer with a sizeable back catalogue spanning a variety of sounds. For this EP, a taster for an album of the same name, he focuses on deep, Detroit techno, but with a twist. The title track is a driving affair, but Mac lends it a musical sound with evocative, breezy chords combined with dramatic string stabs. "Undoubted" sees him go down a more tracky route and its heads-down groove veers close to militaristic, but he keeps it on the right side thank to the clanging drums and crashing percussion. Marcel Fengler also contributes an excellent, wobbly bass-led version of "Insomnia".

Double Dawn (John Heckle remix)
Double Dawn (Claro Intelecto remix)
Review: Toby Leeming aka The Third Man provides a taster of what we can expect from his album Beyond The Heliosphere, due out in May, with the Double Dawn EP on the EPM label. Leeming's production style is somewhat reminiscent of classic Dan Curtin in prioritising melodies but also has a rough and ready touch, yet Leeming is far more linear in his approach, as characterised on the title track. The grandiose swaggering way Leeming utilises his melody lines over the noisy, acid blotted bassline ensure your attentions remain elsewhere though! EPM excel themselves in procuring remixes from the superb John Heckle and Claro Intelecto, with the former's typically intensity complemented by the latter's spiky metallic rhythms
