Review: First issued in 1980 as part of Blue Note’s LT Series, Landslide compiles three previously unreleased sessions from 1961–62, capturing saxophonist Dexter Gordon aka the “Sophisticated Giant” in peak form. Gordon’s tenor tenure saw him rip-curl the grand urbanities of LA, York and Philly over a towering career, and the cast of collaborators heard on sound display here - Sonny Clark, Philly Joe Jones, Ron Carter, and Willie Bobo - offer a vibrant showcase of the company he kept. From the smoky balladry of 'Blue Gardenia' to the uptempo burner 'Second Balcony Jump’, this set offers a dynamic portrait of Gordon’s versatility.
