Review: The 11th full-length from California pop-punk royalty The Offspring comes three years on from 2021's Let The Bad Times Roll, and shall serve as their first project to feature bassist Todd Morse as an official member as well as multi-instrumentalist Jonah Nimoy and drummer Brandon Pertzborn (who has previously toured with Black Flag, Marilyn Manson and Suicidal Tendencies), while drumming duties were split with the legendary Josh Freese (Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle). 10 tracks, spread out just over a half hour, Supercharged looks set to live up to its title following the band's road break and creative pandemic-enforced respite, with a succinct in-anthem-out mantra.

Review: There are few finer alto-sax players in the world than Art Pepper. By the time of his death run 1982 his legacy was already assured after a fantastic run of albums such as his standout Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section. Plus 11 is right up there too, though: the 1960 jazz record saw Art work with an ensemble of 11 other musicians arranged by Marty Paich. It's one of a number dates the two played together that year but the only one with Pepper leading. Pepper's clarinet performance on 'Anthropology' and the alternate takes of 'Walkin'' are real standouts.

Review: Recorded in November 1959, this classic American hard bop session finds the young artist already forging a distinctive voice on the tenor. Backed by an all-star cast with trumpeter Lee Morgan, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb, the album captures a moment of transition for Shorter, just as he was beginning his tenure with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. The tenor saxophonist's first session as a leader, stands as a confident and engaging debut that hints at the genius to come. The six-track set is dominated by Shorter's originals, five in total, with the lone standard being a spirited and swinging take on 'Mack the Knife'. 'Down in the Depths' is the longest cut and is known for its moody development and dynamic solos, while Cobb's drumming is tasteful, commanding and endlessly musical. The rhythm section, then part of Miles Davis' working group, provides a locked-in yet supple foundation for the fiery frontline. A compelling portrait of a rising saxophonist surrounded by top-tier talent, delivering spirited and technically assured hard bop and a formative chapter in one of jazz's most iconic careers.

Review: It's hard to pin-point what's done it - but it appears that 2024 has been a big year for Americana and its influence on mainstream indie rock with the likes of Wednesday, MJ Lenderman and Mitski among those to explore its characteristics. Soccer Mommy burst onto the scene nearly ten years ago with an indie and grunge-inspired look and sound, but with this fourth album, she is embracing more organic instrumentation and putting the spotlight on her voice and songwriting. It's a bold but brilliant move that proves spending time living in Nashville is bearing fruits. And her voice - reminiscent of her contemporaries Phoebe Bridgers and Snail Mail - is suited to the moments of cleaner backing instrumentals. That said, the rock DNA still stands tall, as evidenced by the grunge-tinged single 'Driver', so it's more of an alteration than a sea change. The song structures themselves are also something to be proud of. For instance, the key change on 'Abigail' is a Beatles-esque beauty. With Soccer Mommy crafting songs this good, it's likely that she'll be around for decades to come and album number four is still the early years.

Review: A powerhouse combination , Taj Mahal and Ken Mo join forces once again as TajMo and show why fans consider them two of the finest American musicians of their respective generations. Their first collaboration since 2017's TajMo, which won them a Best Contemporary Blues gong at the Grammy Awards, this is journeyman, soul, rock & roll, country and - of course - blues, at its most modern and finest. That said, Room On the Porch is resolutely rooted in the origins of the canons. At times, like the sax-heavy 'Blues'll Give You Back Your Soul', you can almost feel the balmy heat of a night in a Deep South bar and taste the sour mash. 'Rough Time Blues' even comes with the crackle and raw sonic aesthetic of an original early recorded music tome, adding to the sense of authenticity.

Review: Preceded by a single of the same name last year, The Tipping Point marks the return of one of the most inventive pop groups to ever do it. In the 1980s, Tears For Fears expanded the possibilities of what a commercial song could be with sophisticated songwriting, unabashed bombast, unexpected curveballs and jaw-dropping hooks. Given the influence they've had, they might not sound so revolutionary amongst the generations of pop acts who have followed their lead, but they return vital and full of purpose. Embracing new sonics but staying true to the songwriting as the central focus of the Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal's project, it's a triumphant return from a truly seminal group.

Review: Cal Tjader's 1975 session sees the legendary vibraphonist deep in conversation with Brazilian jazz, pulling rhythmic cues from Rio and translating them through a sun-dazed Californian lens. With Airto Moreira producing, George Duke arranging, and Hermeto Pascoal, Raul De Souza and David Amaro lending their colour, it's a record built on expert interplay and breezy complexity. 'Amazonas' opens with percussive shimmer and modal drift, while 'Xibaba' and 'Mindoro' balance groove with melodic looseness. On the flip, 'Tamanco No Samba' leans into funkier syncopation, contrasting the hazy melancholy of 'Corine' and the closing slink of 'Cahuenga'. There's clarity in how each part moves-airy but assured-and the new AAA cut from the original tapes gives it warmth without excess polish. It's a joy to hear fusion this fluid, with just enough weirdness from Hermeto to keep it from coasting.
