Review: The story of this one revolves around San Diego native Anthony "Antone" Williams. He was one day alone in a studio, messing about with the gear and before he knew he it lay down the haunting rhythm that underpins the tune now presented here by the good folks at Athens of the North. It's a sinister, restless one that got released as a hugely limited 7" on Unity Records with otherworldly soul production and a pained vocal up top. Post punk soul, some call it, and that's a fitting descriptor. A remix appears on the flip but the allure of the original is hard to beat.

Review: Washington DC-based label People's Potential Unlimited is one of those that seems to have an endless supply of magical sounds that all very much fit with its MO and are all pretty unique. Often times that is down to the smart digging of the owners who unearth plenty of treasures for reissuing but this time out it is a new record from a contemporary outfit, TAMTAM. The four piece band formed in Tokyo and started making reggae and dub before moving on to jazz, soul, new age and psych-pop. They bring subtle euphoria to what they do as well as catchy grooves and nostalgic melodies as exemplified here on this mature new work that will be lapped up by fans of Khruangbin.

Review: The latest short form offering from Scottish alternative indie rockers Teenage Fan Club will do nothing to dissuade fans the Glaswegians remain at the cutting edge of their sound. After a four year hiatus, they've returned to hit us with catchy, upbeat, sweet and jangly aural sugar that masks the rather melancholic lyrical content. 'Home' bounds along with summer seemingly pouring from every guitar chord, while Bellshill's finest sing of dejection, frustration and longing.
Then we are told 'Everything's Falling Apart' through harmonious vocal delivery on the B-side: an understatement of epic proportions given the current global situation, it's indicative of the band's well-established modus. Packing suggestion and inference beneath easily-accessible instrumentation is a sure fire way to make as many people as possible stop for a long, hard think.

Review: Tokyo-based post/math-rock noodlers Toe have a habit of cleansing the palette of each subsequent full-length they release with a follow up EP. Just like 2005's debut album The Book About My Idle Plot On A Vague Anxiety was followed up with 2006's New Sentimentality EP, the group would return three years on from their stellar 2009 sophomore effort For Long Tomorrow with 2012's The Future Is Now. From the twinkling emo-inflected shoegazing noodles of 'Run For Word' to the more acoustic-driven psych-jazz of 'Ordinary Days', the four cuts purposefully meander and fuse differing elements from the band's arsenal whilst somehow increasing the dense technicality to absurd, near impenetrable levels.

Review: A fusion of sounds that come together to create this inimitable whole, Toyland marched out of the Australian rock & roll underground carrying totems by the pole-load. Post-punk, New Wave, pop, dub, Afro, ska - elements of multiple styles and genres are more than audible throughout, with Nicholas Hope, Analisa and Michael Hope doing their best to distill an entire era into a single four-tracker. Created amid a cultural explosion in Adelaide during the 1980s, although the city isn't the first on people's lips when thinking about the incredible music that came out during that decade, here's proof a celebration of eclecticism and a desire to rethink the rules of popular music was happening in those heady days, just as much as anywhere else in the Western world at that time.

Review: This is a special and unique coming together that sees Turnstile join forces with the brilliant Toronto jazz ensemble and production team BADBADNOTGOOD. They have worked on reimagining songs from the former's well-received 2021 album Glow On and the results bring all new perspectives and dynamics to tunes like 'Mystery', 'Alien love Call' featuring Blood Orange and 'Underwater Boi.' Both Turnstile and BADBADNOTGOOD are untouchable in their fields right now with rave reviews for their records as well as their live shows. This is another standout project.

Review: "I'd prefer it to be called just a country album," said TORRES of her collaboration with Baker, nearly a decade in the making, "but I'm proud to have made a 'queer country' album." TORRES had the initial idea to turn to the genre, inviting Baker to collaborate not only because of her shared southern roots but also because she'd also had a similarly religious upbringing that ultimately saw sexual orientation judged and condemned. The result is some deeply autobiographic songwriting on tracks like 'Tuesday', about a traditional family's rage at discovering their daughter was gay, the lilting 'Sylvia' and 'Sugar In The Tank', with pedal steel meeting acoustic guitar strum and very intimate sounding vocals. Bound to cause controversy in certain areas of the US, but it's got the quality and distinctive flavour to stand its ground.

Review: Field Music unveils 'Binding Time' for this year's Record Store Day and it is a poignant suite of songs inspired by the Durham Miners' Association's formation, all performed alongside members of the NASUWT Riverside band. The album was first commissioned for the Durham Brass Festival and slated for Redhills' DMA performance in July 2021, but sadly Covid restrictions postponed the event until its debut at Durham's Gala Theatre in 2022. Peter and David, the duo behind Field Music, meticulously researched the region's mining history and weave in personal narratives with historical facts. The album delves into miners' struggles, blacklisting, and societal impacts, completing a trilogy of socio-historical albums following 2015's Music for Drifters and 2021's Making a New World.

Review: Zak Starkey - The Who's drummer and, as it happens, Ringo Starr's kid - joined ex-Kula Shaker bassist Alonza Bevan and The Smiths legend Johnny Marr for what was a kind of British indie supergroup of sorts, for a brief moment of glory. Boomslang remains the first and only album released by JM and the Healers, landing in 2003 to a rather mixed bag of reviews. Some lauded its musicality, others criticised the frontman's lack of bravery in refusing to move out of comfort zones. Listening back 21 years later, we're not sure what people were looking for and, to be honest, that kind of summarises the post-millennial era. We'd spent a lot and did a lot in the previous century, and it took some time to refocus on the blank page of the next 100 years. For us, Boomslang is a well balanced trip through a variety of very UK guitar sounds, from loose, druggy, vocally-effected bits to bewitchingly quiet folk-tinged stuff and rowdier, fight night scores. To clarify - that's all good.

Review: Originally released in 2004 and celebrating its 20th anniversary, Where You Want To Be would serve as the sophomore full-length from Amityville, New York emo/pop-punk icons in the making Taking Back Sunday. Following the rapid success of their 2002 debut LP Tell All Your Friends, John Nolan and bassist Shaun Cooper would leave the group to form Straylight Run (though they would eventually return) and be replaced by Fred Mascherino and Matt Rubano, respectively, with the pair utilising their jazz school background to help the band tighten up compositionally and attain their sought-after elevation. Working with former Husker Du soundman and producer Lou Giordano (The Goo Goo Dolls, Sunny Day Real Estate), pushed the members to embrace additional instrumentation, emblematic on the string-guided ballad 'New American Classic' while lead single 'A Decade Under The Influence' remains one of their signature cuts to this day. Retaining the gritty post-hardcore bite of their debut yet already discovering their burgeoning mainstream appeal which would take full flight on 2006's breakout album Louder Now, the legacy of the aptly titled Where You Want To Be is one of a poignant bridging point between two equally vital eras for the band.

Review: Talk Talk are true totems of the British synth-pop tradition, and they certainly took an interesting path into experimental realms from the midpoint of their career, but it all began right here. The Party's Over is grandiose in all the best ways, capturing an era of exquisite songwriting which was groundbreaking and traditionally rooted at the same time. Like ABC, Talk Talk knew how to deliver bombast and sentimentality without losing the depth of their work, and now, 40 years on, this spectacular album is being given a reissue on white vinyl.

Review: The legendary Talk Talk was one of a kind. Not only did they craft exceptional studio albums rich in melodic details but they were top in the live arena too. This sublime broadcast from 1984 finds them in Utrecht in the Netherlands playing for a live FM Broadcast recorded at the Muziekcentrum Vredenburg on 27th May. The group formed by Mark Hollis is in dynamic form and they worked through all their hits to date alongside cuts from the two albums which they had already put out at that time. Experimental rock, jazz and free improv all defined this most artful band.

Review: Despite emerging as a synth-pop outfit, Talk Talk's sound evolved considerably in a short space of time. By 1986, when their third album The Colour of Spring hit record stores, they'd ditched the synth-pop of their debut and the free-jazz-influenced post-rock of its sequel in favour of a more traditional indie sound - albeit one still infused with some electronics and bags of aural invention. The performance captured on this CD (originally recorded for a radio broadcast) dates from 86 and mixes interpretations of tracks from The Colour of the Spring with new takes on earlier singles and classic cuts. Highlights include a rushing version of 'It's My Life', the concert-opening 'Talk Talk' and a decidedly Balearic, harmonica-sporting 'Living In Another World'.

Now's the chance to do something about that if you were one of those naysayers. Was It Just A Dream? is a no-holds-barred collection of singles from the outfit's back catalogue, which makes one thing clear. If you're looking for a slightly trippy combination of 1960s girl groups, The Ramones and New Wave, this is it. You can't help but wonder if the troupe - who only stayed together for two years, disbanding in 1988 - might have enjoyed more success in today's irony-filled, remake loving world.

Review: In June 1985, British synth-pop duo Tears For Fears aka Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, recorded a live set for the King Biscuit Flower Hour while at the peak of their success. Their acclaimed sophomore album, Songs from the Big Chair, had just launched, and the promotional tour included a great performance at London's Hammersmith Odeon. This concert recording features highlights from their debut album, The Hurting, alongside new tracks from their then-current hit release and it very much captures the essence of their mid-'80s new wave style. It is all enhanced by a bonus set from a 1983 Palais show nearby.

Review: An absolute delight for Tears For Fears fans, this archival radio broadcast showcases the Bath band at the peak of their powers during a U.S tour in 1990. As was the fashion for decades, the concert - in Santa Barbara Bowl in California - was recorded for, and broadcast by, local radio station KROQ. It offers a snapshot of the outfit's career up to that point, flitting between evocative versions of genuine classics ('Head Over Heels/Broken', 'Mad World'), fan favourites ('Advice For The Young at Heart', 'Famous Last Words'), insopired covers (a storming run through of 'When The Saints Go Marching In', a loved-up interpretation of Beatles classic 'All You Need Is Love'), and extended versions of the band's most inspiring moments ('Everybody Wants To The Rule', 'Shout').

Whether you'd agree with that accolade or not, it's a classic example of jangle-noise-power pop indie that really helped define what those words actually mean for at least two generations to come. Review: The difficult second from Senior Templeman takes his short but pretty sweet back catalogue in a bold new direction. Acid pop? Maybe. Theatrical soft rock? Possibly. Something else entirely? Definitely. Shades of glam guitar cool? For sure. All that's by the byes though, really - we could spend a lifetime splitting hairs about genre and still not quite hit the nail on the head. Featuring production from the legendary Nile Rodgers, super-cool Karma Kid, Oscar Scheller, Will Bloomfield, Justin Young, Josh Scarbrow and Charlie J Perry, this is a restless but rewarding listen, rarely hanging around in one stylistic place before moving on to another. What's remarkable about this soul-inflected, funk-fuelled, psychedelic hued odyssey, though, is just how natural the whole thing feels.

Review: Unsurprisingly there have been a number of Pollen reviews using puns and symbolism to invoke the fact that Tennis formed as a duo while on a long sailing trip and have continued to forge their own route through musical world. We just did it again, and in all honesty didn't mean to. Whether it's a cliche or just nice way of putting things, it's resolutely true, as is the fact both members - Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley - like to have control over their output as much as image.
You can hear that in this sixth long-player. Even if you're not actually listening out for it. There's so much intricate detail hiding away behind the light and airy pop the record has armed itself to the teeth with. The result being a juxtaposition almost as thrilling as the sharp tongued lyrics - although those you really do need to pay attention for.

Review: It's hard to believe it is now a full decade since Detroit's Dez Andres blew up off the back of his classic house jam 'New For U.' He had of course been toiling away for years before that, recording with Moodyman and DJing for Slum Village amongst other things. Since then the music has kept coming - some of it hip-hop as DJ Dez, some of it house under this alias, and much of it a perfect fusion of the two. And that's what we get here on this new EP for Beretta Music - four lush deep house joints with his smooth signature drum loops and gloriously incidental melodies. The slower, funkier bounce of 'Back To Nature' is the EP highlight for us, but all four of these are a cut above, as per usual with Dez.

There's always been an air of mystery about The The. Look through the band's history, which stretches wayyyyy back to the late-1970s, and the list of collaborators alone is enough to convince you they've been making moves in the right places for many, many years, striving to innovate and carve out their own space in the unarguably busy post punk landscape.
Everything Matt Johnson touches seems to turn to gold. Albeit a particularly scuzzy gold that exists solely in the darkest rooms of the least kept venues. Even on this accolade - a group getting a spot at The Royal Albert Hall is no mean feat - there's a sense of yellow-hued street lights and rain falling on concrete. But this is combined with a poetic element that's up there with the finest literary Romantics, and a commentary that will tell you all there is to tell.

Review: It's almost hard to believe Therapy?'s fourth album, and their second for a major label, is now 30 years old. Talk about a reason to seek help. Often considered the Northern Irish rockers at their all-time peak of success, it's certainly the group's most commercial effort both in terms of the sound and the sales that followed its release. For some, then, the switch to a more direct, punk-oriented style, with plenty of nods to a metal scene that was, back then, still pretty melodic and pre-doom, marked the end of what had been one of the UK's finest noise rock outfits. Certainly the involvement of big business music execs had an impact. However, we'd say Troublegum is really about balancing raw energy and teeth-clenched attitude with a more accessible form, and it works very well indeed.

Review: British musician Kate Stable struck gold when she adopted the moniker This Is The Kit. A top play on words, she also did remarkably well drafting in comrades Rozi Plain, Neil Smith, and Jamie Whitby-Coles for the band. Active since 2003, to date they have released six studio albums alongside a wealth of short and extended play material, giving them a pretty big catalogue to pluck from when taking to the live stage. The quality of the oeuvre is only one of the exceptional aspects of their shows, though. One listen to Live At The Minack Theatre is like sipping an enchanted elixir. It woos, allures, immerses and moves you, alternative folk-rock comprising infinite layers of musicality, gentile cacophonies and laidback crescendos taking things to ever greater levels of artistry.

Review: Even if you've not heard Three Quarter Skies yet, this one should already be in the shopping cart. They had us at 'new project from Simon Scott of Slowdive', and we're not sure anybody has bothered to look back since. Eight gorgeous tracks that have grown out of last year's Universal Flames EP, which introduced this new moniker to the world, and was itself based on a semi-improvised live recording session. Here, though, things are resolutely more focused and planned. Depth of sound is a big aspect, with plenty navigating similar cosmic territories to the shoegaze Scott built his stellar reputation on. Close your eyes to the world then, and allow these sounds to wash over and immerse you - there's little chance you'll find anything quite so powerful this week.

Review: We've become accustomed to Chazwick "Chaz Bear" Bundwick surprising with each successive release. He's at his genre-bending best once more on Hole Earth, the Oakland native's eight album as Toro Y Moi. Born of a desire to incorporate elements of "rap rock, Soundcloud rap and 2000s Emo", much of the material sees the proudly independent musican blend head-nodding hip-hop beats with picturesque synth sounds, pop-punk guitar licks, multi-tracked vocals (sung more than rapped, interestingly) and a radio-friendly veneer. There are some suitably entertaining and ear-catching moments, from the lo-fi indie pop cheeriness of 'Hollywood', and the picturesque electronics of 'CDR', to the low-slung grooves and fuzzy guitar riffs of 'Tuesday' and the jangly dreaminess of closing cut 'Heaven'.

The bilingual moniker is almost as poetic as the music itself, which has always been thought provoking, to put it mildly. Hole Erth is the tenth studio album to come from this lackadaisical maestro, and lands two years after the critically acclaimed Mahal. Again, it's deep dive stuff you'd have to be mad or hard of hearing not to get lost in. A sumptuous feast of sounds which are as easy on the ear as they are poignant in the mind. Once again, it's pretty unmissable.

Review: "This LP is a compilation of songs from five different digital-only demo collections I released on Bandcamp between 2021 and 2023. I relied on the ears and judgment of my old friend Dom at Feral Child to curate this comp, allowing him to choose his favorites from over 60 songs," James Toth says of Demon Stations. "While I might have chosen an entirely different batch of tunes, I was happy to defer to Dom, as I've never had much perspective when it comes to assessing my own material." With every track recorded at home, many on the same day they were written, and mostly first takes used, there's an audible quality to this collection of archive material that's every bit as honest as the artist's own explanation as to how the final package came about. An atmosphere entirely befitting the open-hearted folk and Americana dominating the release.

Review: Berlin's Jennifer Touch is back with a second album of her synth, cold wave and electro collages and this one is inspired by reading 'Grapes of Wrath' by John Steinbeck. She was touched by the idea of the settler's movement and got into the mindset of a cowboy while writing these tunes. The resulting sounds are full of hope and mystery and were all written in an explosion of creativity and energy in just a couple of months. That plays out in the urgency of the grooves making for another great long player.

Review: Jupiter were kings of the middle of the road indie sound that dominated back at the turn of the millennium. If you don't remember the name you will remember the music as they topped charts and got heavy TV play, not least for most notable single 'I Wish You Would'. All in all this is an album of heartwarming and emotional indie pop niceness you're likely to fall head over heels for again, hence the fact it has been covered by innumerable stars since its initial release. In many ways, once you know the story the track takes on a very different form - far less amorous and much more about longing and lamentation. This latest reissue comes in red and black marble vinyl.

Review: 25 years have now passed since Liverpool legend Pete Wylie and his long-term backing band released Songs of Strength & Heartbreak, which marked the post-punk era combo's return to action after 16 long years. Something of a triumphant return, the set flits between raucous punk energy ('Never Loved as a Child'), Oasis-ish riffs on mid-late period Beatles ('Sing All The Saddest Songs', 'Disneyland Forever'), riff-heavy post-Britpop indie-rock ('I Still Love You', post-punk headiness ('Loverboy') and all manner of orchestrated, reach-for-the-ceiling sing-alongs ('Hey! Mona Lisa'). To mark the album's birthday, Chrysalis has served up this expanded 'deluxe' edition. Unusually, this time round CD1 boasts the album as it was originally demo'd and produced in 1998 - including a slew of songs that were subsequently shelved - with the 'released' version (2000) nestled on CD2.
