Review: Who doesn't like a freebie? Nice move from the Daughter of Cain label here (an imprint of Prescription Songs) they offer a free poster with this limited run of Ethel Cain's debut album. With Cain, real name Hayden Anhedonia, having kicked off 2025 with the release of her second album; her debut, which paved the way for a massive cult following that's her into a mainstream alt-pop figure, is earning renewed attention. Sonically, this is befitting to the Sad Girl Summer movement which became a craze on social media. Think Mitski, Lana Del Rey, Phoebe Bridgers, but with more of an alternative and shoegaze undercurrent. Lyrically, Anhedonia delves into her past, growing up in a staunchly religious family - and her most iconic line of any song on the album has to go to 'American Teenager': "God loves you/but not enough to save you".

Review: This is the second of three inventive and influential albums that John Cale released through Island Records in the mid-70s. The Velvet Underground founding member was in stellar company with Brian Eno, Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera and one of the most prolific studio session guitarists of all time, Chris Spedding, all appearing on the album. The album is stacked with bangers, but of note is the life-affirming and soulful 'Dirtyass Rock 'n' Roll; his cover of 'Heartbreak Hotel', which is one of the best covers ever recorded and 'I'm Not The Loving Kind'. The latter gained recognition most recently when the late, great Mark Lanegan covered it beautifully for his Imitations album. Cale will forever be a wellspring of inspiration.

Review: Domino Records embark on an ambitious reissues double-bill of John Cale's earliest solo records. Here - third to his debut record after his self-excision from the Velvet Underground, Vintage Violence (1970) (to which Cale was infamously disparaging in his later years, deriding his performance on the work as "masked" behind a disingenuous imperative to prove he could still write songs) and second to his Academy In Peril (1972) - comes his third and much better loved LP, Paris 1919. Released in 1973, Cale has regained ground here, still flexing a wonderful talent for songcraft, yet also an entirely new orchestral chamber pop direction, easily foiling the unflappable cool cat persona depicted on the front cover, and eschewing the dark experimentalism of his preceding album. Where it's not plush with string movements, Paris 1919 brims with softly-strung guitar arpeggiations and electric piano hooks, its placid easy listening approach much befitting of the Paris Peace Conference, and other related postwar drives to armistice, that bestruck the public imagination during the earliest post-war 20th Century.

Review: Music legend John Cale, best known as the Welsh multi-instrumentalist who co-founded The Velvet Underground, which went on to become one of the most influential groups of all time, is best known for his collaborative work in bands and his work as a producer. But he has a storied solo catalogue. With releases stretching from 1970 to 2024, there's an impressive array to delve into. His fourth album, Fear, is considered by fans to be one of his best. Fear was recorded when Cale returned to living in London after spending years in America. A slew of musicians also signed to Island at the time appear on the record, including Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music and Brian Eno. It's a truly compelling mix of avant garde freakouts and melancholic art rock that's a reminder that music can be incredibly freeing and transcendental when played with this level of imagination and spirit.

Review: Campus Christy is a new collaboration between Stones Throw Records founder Chris Manak (aka Peanut Butter Wolf) and musician Brian Ellis. Nearly 25 years after his 1999 debut My Vinyl Weighs a Ton, Manak revisits his high school garage band roots by forming this project to reinterpret lesser-known tracks from the late 60s to early 80s. With Manak on vocals and Ellis providing instruments, Campus Christy is a nostalgic nod to the past that blends influences from an era that shaped Manak's musical journey. It's both a personal tribute and a fresh exploration of forgotten gems.

Review: This Midwestern emo classic gets its first vinyl reissue since the album's initial release in 1995. Like true audiophiles, the album - often shortened to just Shmap'n Shmazz - has been remastered from the original tapes. For those wondering, Cap'n Jazz are trailblazers in their field - widely recognized for having shaped the sound of mathy Midwest Emo. And after they left Cap'n Jazz, the members formed a slew of other terrific groups, including the mighty American Football, who are regularly lauded as pioneers. But 30 years on from their sole release, Cap'n Jazz are quite rightly ready for their victory lap. Immerse into cuts such as the timeless 'Little League' and the high-octane 'In The Clear', where the yelpy vocals and pummeling drums are the essence of high-octane rock n' roll, and you'll get the fervour surrounding them.

Review: South London duo Carter USM were formed in 1987 by Fruitbat and Jim Bob and soon revolutionised indie punk-rock pop with a unique blend of samples, drum machines and social commentary. Recorded in 1993 during a Uk tour to promote their fourth album Post Historic Monsters UK, Up Pompey! captures the band at their peak and is a potent 19-track live album that includes fiery renditions of (then) recent singles like 'Lenny and Terence' and 'Lean on Me I Won't Fall Over' alongside classics like 'The Only Living Boy in New Cross' and 'Bloodsport for All', enhanced here by guest guitar from EMF's James Atkin. Newly mixed by Les 'Fruitbat' Carter and Dave Draper, it's released on 140g black vinyl, so the pressing is every bit as loud and proud as the music it contains.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Creasing to corner of outer sleeve but otherwise in excellent condition***

In November 2022, Cat Power took the stage at London’s Royal Albert Hall and delivered a song-for-song recreation of one of the most fabled and transformative live sets of all time. Held at the Manchester Free Trade Hall in May 1966 - but long known as the “Royal Albert Hall Concert” due to a mislabeled bootleg - the original performance saw Bob Dylan switching from acoustic to electric midway through the show, drawing ire from an audience of folk purists and forever altering the course of rock n' roll. In her own rendition of that historic night, the artist otherwise known as Chan Marshall inhabited each song with equal parts conviction and grace and a palpable sense of protectiveness, ultimately transposing the anarchic tension of Dylan’s set with a warm and luminous joy. Now captured on the live album Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert, Marshall’s spellbinding performance both lovingly honors her hero’s imprint on history and brings a stunning new vitality to many of his most revered songs.

Review: The Chameleons have never been darlings of the indie press in the same way other Manchester bands such as The Stone Roses, Joy Division and The Smiths have been. Nevertheless, they never let that stand in their way and became one of the biggest bands in the city and shaped it in many ways. For instance, it's hard to imagine the early Stone Roses' atmospheric sound coming off in the same way if it wasn't for The Chameleons. This release captures them performing to a packed Hacienda just a few months before they released their Cure and Joy Division-esque debut album and so the setlist draws heavily from that classic. There's also cuts that never saw a studio release and were only played live, such as 'Men Of Steel' and 'Years Ago', making for a rich, deep dive into one of the key bands of post-punk history.

Review: Chapman's magnetic voice and stark storytelling create an atmosphere both intimate and politically charged on this, her 1988 self-titled debut, made famous by hit single 'Fast Car', but ultimately a far deeper affair. Songs like 'Talkin' Bout a Revolution' channel the protest spirit of folk legends like Woody Guthrie, delivering an anthem for those marginalised by economic inequality. Her blend of folk, blues and rock feels timeless, with lyrics that still moves listeners today. The haunting 'Behind the Wall', can move one to tears for its raw portrayal of domestic violence and the systemic failure of the police to intervene. Chapman's trembling contralto gives life to the repeated line 'Last night I heard the screaming', transforming it into a powerful condemnation of indifference. In contrast, 'If Not Now...' is a personal perspective, urging listeners to live and love in the present with its delicate acoustic arrangement. Chapman's storytelling is a triumph of nuance, balancing bleakness with hope. Decades later, Tracy Chapman remains a powerhouse in songwriting, deserving renewed attention. It is not just an album of its time but a work of enduring relevance, offering a poignant reminder that music can still be a catalyst for change.

Review: Who can argue with them for wanting to repress this beauty? It's quite simply one of the best pop albums of all time. Tracy Chapman's voice is inimitable and she is, frankly, a genius. The timeless yet nostalgic 'Fast Car' is the unmistakable standout here - be teleported back to late-80s Britain (when it was a ubiquitous presence in public spaces) but know that if an emerging artist wrote that today it would still be a number one. Strictly speaking this is a 37th anniversary reissue - but who's counting? The label, with Chapman herself involved, have gone to meticulous steps to ensure it's an audiophile delight: Heavyweight vinyl and sourced from the analog master. The trusty Bernie Grundman, who is one of the best mastering engineers in the world, was the honoured hire in bringing this work of art back to life.

Review: To celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Charlatans' pivotal album Up To Our Hips, Beggars set to release an expanded edition on vinyl. This reissue retains the full original tracklist while adding ten bonus tracks, all curated by frontman Tim Burgess. The collection will feature live session recordings from the BBC, B-sides, alternate mixes, and unreleased outtakes, offering fans a unique glimpse into the band's creative process during a tumultuous period. Originally launched in 1994, Up To Our Hips marked a significant shift in the band's sound, veering away from the upbeat pop of their earlier works towards a darker, organ-driven aesthetic. Inspired by influences such as the Small Faces and Bob Dylan, the album's lyrics reflect the pressures the band faced internally. With its signature blend of driving Hammond organs, soulful rhythms, and Burgess' evocative vocals, The Charlatans have solidified their status as a lasting force in British music. This anniversary edition, complete with new artwork by Nik Void and pressed on '[etrol blue" bio vinyl.

Review: Chase Atlantic's fourth album offers a more mature sound than previous LPs while exploring themes of loneliness, depression and fear. The title reflects the paradox of being in an ideal place yet feeling miserable and the music showcases the band's evolution into a fusion of pop, rock and r&b in their signature genre-defying style. The lead single quickly gained popularity by amassing millions of streams and views and follow-up 'Doubt It' continues the trend with addictive melodies and fresh sounds. Although Chase Atlantic pushes boundaries here, their original fans will still remain happy with the signature energy of this album.

Review: The world lost one of the all-time great indie songwriters when The Chills leader Martin Phillipps passed away in 2024. The New Zealand jangle-pop pioneers started out in the 80s, writing memorable melodies and beautiful harmonies and went on to have a career lasting more than 40 years. They helped coin the 'Dunedin sound' - a catch-all name given to the indie scene in the university city of Dunedin in the remote east coast of the South Island of New Zealand - a place that punched way above its weight in terms of cultural relevance and great indie music for its size. This release comes as a reminder of their greatness and includes a whopping 20 songs (it's a double LP and on gold(!)) from the band's early years revisited. As is often the case with tireless creatives, there's a vault of unfinished work that often never gets completed. Philipps dedicated moments at the end part of his life to fleshing out these song ideas, resulting in their completion nearly 40 years after they were written. 'If This World Was Made For Me' is the first song to be unearthed from this collection and is as beautiful as indie psychedelia gets with Philipps' vocal harmonies transcendent in their splendour.

Review: Jangle pop pioneers The Chills came out of the Dunedin scene in the 80s, which grew to become one of the most important movements in indie rock history, largely thanks to the output on the Flying Nun label, which The Chills were apart of when they first started out. The Chills had their own Brian Wilson in Martin Phillipps: a prolific songwriter with an ear for melody and harmony up there with the best that's ever been. Sadly, he passed away in 2024, but this album is released as a reminder of just how good he was and it's a timely balm for the grief felt within the indie rock community. The songs here come from work Phillipps did shortly before he died, where he opened his vault of unfinished songs that he started early in the Chills' career and fleshed them out to finally release them all these years later. We can assure you; it's been well worth the wait. Sublime stuff.
