Review: Japanese duo Milk Talk first released their single 'Wagamama Riso' as an afterthought to their recent debut album, flaunting an impressively sparse sound that only the most sophisticated of ears can achieve. Though not intended for any further protraction, producer XL Middleton nonetheless took due note of the release and immediately set about remixing it, recognising its headroomy flair and attention to minute detail. Now the original 'Wagamama Riso' appears on a limited edition 7" alongside Middleton's finished remix, which fleshes out the original's potent city pop minimalisms with a resplendent, gated-snared neon production style.

Review: Having handled duties on the previous Mofunk release themselves alongside fellow label head Eddy Funkster, XL Middleton withdraws behind the buttons here to throw the spotlight back on local Pasadena vocalist Moniquea. Exposed to the soul of the '70s and the electro funk of the '80s whilst growing up, Moniquea's distilled these influences into her brand of revamped take on 80s funk which inaugurated Mofunk last year with the seven inch slab I Don't Wanna Get Used To It and it's nice to hear her back on the mic. XL Middleton's production on the vintage squeeze and bounce of "A Certain Way" is second to none, whilst the flip sees Diamond Ortizz in full on Zapp mode with a remix of "I Don't Wanna Get Used To It".

Review: Fresh from covering Cherelle classic "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On" on the mighty Omega Supreme, Moniquea Roberson returns to regular home Mofunk with some modern boogie business. Both sides of the seven-inch were produced by regular collaborator XL Middleton, who has once again excelled in delivering backing tracks rich in colourful synthesizers, squeezable P-funk bass and head-nodding mid-'80s drum machine beats. It's clear Roberson is the star attraction, though, first combining strutting raps with memorable chorus vocals on floor-friendly A-side "All The Time", before singing like a celebrated international R&B star on the slower - but no less potent -- flipside "His Lady".

Review: House music and fresh modern funk are happy bedfellows on this new EP from Moniquea with the masterful production taken care of by XL Middleton who, if you ask us, cannot miss at the moment. With an unmistakable West Coast vibe characterised by punchy synth bass and leads, this A-side embraces the good times with pulsating beats and detuned chords. On the B-side, the '97 Remix pays homage to Moniquea's g-funk origins while the bonus Applejac remix of 'Hate To See It' seamlessly blends dance-oriented elements with lush synth strings reminiscent of peak-era Neptunes productions from the 2000s.

Review: MoFunk Records boss queen Moniquea is back on the label with the boogie master that is XL Middleton. They go back to their roots here with some stylish street soul on a vital split 7". XL Middleton's first up 'I Can't Believe It' with its bright synth squirms, boogie bass and 80s drum machine sounds all topped off with plenty of cosmic funk and hip-swinging magic. On the flip is the equally bright and vivid Moniquea jam 'Get It Together' with its withering cosmic chords and gorgeous vocal all under pixelated leads that take you to the stars.
