The Break Down (Eazy Goes To Memphis)
Cat: HR 009. Rel: 03 Jun 21
Altered Tapes - "The Break Down (Eazy Goes To Memphis)" (3:59)
DJ Platurn - "King Penguin" (Funky beats edit) (4:01)
Review: Chicago's Altered Tapes crew offer up their own unique take on a West Coast gangster rap classic with the A-side of this one on US label Heat Rock. It's the label's seventh outing and places focus on Memphis soul and funk territory. 'The Break Down' is a big, horn led jam with funk beats and crisp rhythms. Reverse this limited 7" to find Oakland's own DJ Platurn. He smashes out a drum heavy, break-heavy edit that pays homage to a cut and paste great. It's funky, filled with vocal samples and mad keys and packs real heat.

Special Versions By Dimitri From Paris

James Brown - "Funky Men" (Dimitri From Paris Special version) (6:13)
The JB's - "Just Wanna Make You Dance" (feat Maxxi - Dimitri From Paris Special version) (6:48)
Review: Dimitri From Paris returns with a fresh installment of his celebrated DFP Vaults series, highlighting deep cuts that reinforce his status as a top-tier remixer, DJ, and a true connoisseur of dance music's hidden gems. This release holds particular significance for Dimitri, as it pays homage to the legendary James Brown, a figure whose influence in music is beyond measure. The release features Dimitri's 'Special Version' of 'Funky Men,' a track from James Brown's Soul Syndrome. Originally overlooked by Dimitri in 1981, it now shines with a unique disco beat that he's reimagined using both vintage and modern editing techniques. The track has already proven its power on the dance floor. On the flip side, Dimitri revisits 'Just Wanna Make You Dance' by The J.B.'s, featuring Maxxi. This rare disco track, with its Caribbean flair, gets Dimitri's expert touch, enhancing its dancefloor appeal. DFP Vaults, the sister label to Le-Edits Records, presents this release with meticulous attention to detail, featuring state-of-the-art mastering and vintage-inspired packaging.

Tom Browne - "Brighter Tomorrow" (feat Carol Woods) (6:12)
Diplomats Of Soul - "Brighter Tomorrow" (feat Incognito & Imaani) (5:53)
Review: Expansion's offshoot label is back with a second release and for the occasion have put together a special eco vinyl 10" here that is strictly limited to just 100 copies and is fully deserving of that treatment: Tom Browne Feat. Carol Woods combined to great effect in the 80s on this soul classic that now gets a first-ever single release. It's the sort of immediately heartwarming tune that draws from soul, jazz funk, disco and more to cook up a steamy and excellent groove. On the flip is Diplomats Of Soul with their own super cover of 'Brighter Tomorrow' featuring Brit funk and acid jazz greats Incognito & Imaani.

Paradise (17:58)
Review: California beat maker Damon G Riddick aka Dam-Funk is back with two instrumental narratives on his GlydeZone Recordings. Serving up the breezy, neon-lit west coast vibe of 'Destination: Known' on the A side, while on the flip we have got some emotive late night boogie-down funk on 'Paradise'. Mastered by Matthewdavid (Leaving Records), this is the definition of extended play. Originally released back in 2015, this is on vinyl for the first time for the collectors and limited to 500 copies.

Review: Summer is Dam-Funk season. The synth funk pioneer's sounds never seem more fitting than when cruising about on an early summer evening, top down (at least in your mind) with the sky turning burnt orange. He soundtracks that moment four more times here with 'Rise' being a more downbeat and pensive vibe, then 'Make It' getting a little more playful on the bump-n-grid beats and squelchy boogie bass. 'From A G Perspective' has low-riding Cali-funk in its bones and 'Free' closes with more lush analogue textures and shimmering chords on this vital, limited 12".

Review: Following co-labs with DJ Spinna and Ekkah on previous Glydezone outings, Dam Funk takes to his own label controls solo for the first time with this piquant trio of loose limbed future funk tales. "Electric Breeze" sets the scene perfectly with subtly sleazy electroboogie flavours, "Nyghtryder" spaces the beats out a little more for added cosmicity while "She Lights Me Up" is all about the big double clap gusto and life affirming chords. Cowbell (Eeh Aah Eeh) (4:31)
Review: Italian producer Giovanni Damico has always put plenty of effort into making his sounds come alive with lush, rich melodies whatever genre he's making. Now it is Afro and disco grooves that power this EP, with more of those majestic chords. They have a retro feel here - with tinniness and old-school futurism embraced over elastic and acrobatic beats and bass. 'Watch Out' is a party starter to kick off then there are more lazy and sleazy jams like 'Nowhere' and there twisted electronics of 'Voodoo' bring plenty of invention and a variety of vivacious sounds to this EP.

Sombre Guitar (Star Dish latin remix)
Review: What a great Japanese only reissue! As far as we know this supreme jazz dance classic never came out as a single, apart from on a 12" sampler via the Counterpoint label 12 years back. The track itself was taken from the Creation One album on the USA label Thimble and can fetch several hundred pounds when you can actually find a copy! Tried and trusted by the jazz dance DJ elite, the track was a firm favourite with the likes of Gilles Peterson and Patrick Forge during the heady days of legendary weekly sessions at Dingwalls. A great vocal and infectious vocal is underpinned by killer percussion and a memorable brass lines, while the Star Dish mix attempts to update the track with a somewhat heavier club feel. Nothing short of essential.

Review: Sound Essence has got there rights to a real rare gem from East Germany's early 70s jazz scene here and it features the Horst Kruger Septet. Known as one of the top soul-jazz and beat combos of their time, they recorded two previously unreleased tracks that exemplify their unique sound. 'Ich will die Zeit nicht bereuen' is a standout German-language soul-beat hit with hard-hitting, rocking beats, enhanced by a bold brass section. The second track, 'Sonderbar,' is a soulful jazz sounds with repetitive lyrics and groovy bass topped with guitar, drums and organ. Add in a flute solo and dreamy Hammond outro and you have a real doozy.

Regards From Freddie Horowitz (4:39)
Review: The Dave Pike Set was a five-piece jazz band active for only four years from '68 to '72. But in that short time that manages seven albums, and had some standout single success. Two of their biggest - 1969's 'Mathar'/'I'm On My Way' - are repressed here on a 7" that will cost you upwards of L300 if you can find an original. There are some heavy sitar vibes on the a-side to start with, eventually making way for a strident 60s beat that is all psyched-out jazz stylings and raw drums. The flip is a much more after-dinner vibe, with harmonic keys setting a silky tone.

Moon Over Rio (3:23)
Review: Stefano De Santis echoes purple dubstep on this live-feeled new electronic jazz dazzler, all improvised synth fusion that works well both as a danceable cut and a timeout moment. Just two tunes, 'Santos 79' and 'Moon Over Rio' come across like the morning and evening sides of De Santis' lifeworld; the former is a warm, glitzing sonic waxing, full of tweezy approach notes and Simmons drum 'pows'; the latter is a crepuscular waning, contrasting to the other by way of twinkly chime cascades and deeper chromatic blues.

Review: Parisian jazz-funk, disco and boogie band Chatobaron - an outfit helmed by multi-instrumentalist Frank Chatona - have previously worked in the studio with house and nu-disco mainstay Art of Tones, so it's no surprise to see them recruiting the mighty Dimitri From Paris to mix their latest single. His A-side 'Club Vocal' mix is a genuinely riotous and celebratory affair, with strong group vocals (singing about how much they love 'your' music) and heady horns rising a jolly and joyous, piano-sporting disco-funk groove rich in low-slung bass and Cerrone style percussion. It comes accompanied not by one of Dimitri's deconstructed dubs, but rather an equally excitable 'Club Instrumental' mix that boasts all the goodness of his A-side mix minus the vocals.

Chez Madame La Baronne (Idjut Boys Fazz Junk version)
Review: Earlier this year, French disco and jazz-funk combo Chatobaron joined forces with fellow Parisian Dimitri From Paris for the rather good 'I Like (The Music That You Play)'. While that was a wholehearted disco workout, this speedy sequel sees the band (and their high-profile collaborator) explore their West Coast jazz-funk influences via an inspired workout full to bursting with killer instrumental solos, dusty grooves, memorable motifs and a genuinely killer, cowbell-sporting percussion brerak. This time round, there are no Dimitri From Paris remixes; instead, dubbed-out disco favourites the Idjut Boys are on hand to smother the track in tape echo and dub delay. The result is a typically spaced-out, low-slung affair that naturally makes the most of the band's killer bassline and layered percussion sounds.

Ride On Fire (Muro's Love Break) (5:48)
Gold Wave (Ryuhei The Man 45 edit) (4:50)
Review: Those with a deep knowledge of contemporary Japanese disco culture may well be aware of Dinky-Di, a self-styled "modern groove orchestra" helmed by musician/arranger Waq Takahashi. This fine 45 offers up a taste of their swirling, string-laden, groove-driven disco sound via two tidy re-edits of previous singles. On the A-side you'll find "king of diggin'" DJ Muro at the controls, delivering a cracking rearrangement of 'Ride on Fire', a Salsoul Orchestra-esque affair that sounds like it was arranged and conducted by the great Tony Montana. Over on the flip Ryuhei The Man takes his scalpel to 2005 single 'Gold Wave', a delightfully swooping and over-the-top concoction full of warbling choral backing vocals, punchy horns, swooping strings and flash-fried funk guitars.

Review: Ultra Vybe remain deep in their Brunswick excavations with these two sublime cuts from the label's super troupe of session players Directions and their one and only album. Released 1976, OG copies fetch almost L200 and just these two tracks alone hint at why. Shimmering with a strong Faze-O feel with an evocative contrast of falsetto and deep baritone and twinkling instrumentation, both tracks swoon with everything that was so smooth and emotional about the label who gave the world Jackie Wilson, The Chi-Lites and Gene Chandler. Show some love.

All Night Long (4:52)
Review: Originally released in 1983 on Evergreen Records, the D.I.T. Band's split 7" 'You Bring Out The Best In Me' has been remastered and reissued for a new generation of fans - needless to say, that hardly detracts from both songs' appeal, which need no second introduction. A Prince-like funk snappiness is central to the tracks, nailing the ultra-swung mood of early '80s funk with its oohs and aoows - clearly, the aim is to make you scream, "tight!" For those who like it snappy, futuristic, and rare, this one's for you.

Review: The latest release from the TakeFingz label, DJ Katch's 7" single, dives into the blaxploitation soundscape with a fresh twist on a classic 80s hip-hop track. This installment, the fourth in Katch's series, reimagines Grandmaster Flash's iconic 'The Message,' splitting the track into two sidesiScene A and Scene B. Side-1 features an extended funky loop, evoking the feel of a hero driving into the sunset during the credits, while still retaining a vibrant dance floor groove. Side-2 offers a stripped-down, choppier version, perfect for DJs to mix or scratch. Katch's rework celebrates 50 years of hip-hop with his signature style, blending streetwise funk and jazz with distinctive samples and iconic verses. Played by notable DJs like The Allergies and Craig Charles, this release showcases Katch's talent for creating a "furtive" sound, blending classic hip-hop with a touch of cinematic flair.

This is one of those records, an essential 7" from Bloom and Japanese talent DJ Koco aka Shimokita, who has been spinning 45s since 2011 and can juggle beats like Messi can juggle a ball. Review: Anyone who has heard DJ Marky do one of his "non D&B" sets will know that his love of funk, soul, disco and boogie is real, while there's far more classic Brazilian music in his record collection than some may expect. It makes sense then that he's been asked to provide the follow-up to DJ Format's Brazil 45s box set and pick some vintage carnival-ready gems of his own from Mr Bongo's bulging vaults. There are naturally some stone-cold classics present - see Jorge Ben's floor-slayer 'Take it Easy My Brother Charles' and the boogie-era smoothness of Robson Jorge and Lincoln Olivetta's 'Eva' - but also plenty of lesser-known samba and MPB gems stretched across the five "45s".

Here DJ Nature (AKA NYC-based exiled Bristolian Milo Johnson, once a founder member of the legendary Wild Bunch soundsystem) gets his chance to shine across a must-check double-pack. He first delivers a weighty, loopy, dancefloor dub style rearrangement of a suspenseful and low-slung disco treat ('Feel Dub'), before delivering a scalpel style edit of a string-laden disco-soul number ('Disco Power') and expertly stretching out a sensual, low-slung Fatback Band classic ('Midnite Freak'). To round things off, he lightly dubs out a shuffling disco groover ('Want Your Loving') and delivers a heavy take on a Windy City disco classic ('Chi-Town Theme').

Review: Remarkably, 'Rock (Unpluged)', DJ Spinna's collaboration with the Tortured Soul Band, is now 20 years old. Originally released by BBE on a now sought-after seven-inch, the cut adds tight, on-point scratches and sample trickery from Spinna to a languid, hot-stepping jazz-funk workout laden with loose-limbed drum breaks, warming bass, spacey synths and fantastic horn arrangements. Over on the flip you'll find a fresh re-edit of 2003 album track 'All Up On It', a more laidback chunk of scratch-sporting Hammond-funk that's as deep, jazzy and warming as they come. On Side-1, the Racked Mix of 'Lowrider' reimagines Cypress Hill's classic into an underground groove, infusing it with a darker, more rhythmic vibe that keeps the original's essence while bringing something entirely new to the table. The crisp scratches and expertly crafted edits to the original vocals add a layer of excitement, making it a perfect floor filling track that's sure to get attention.

Review: New Norwegian label Neppa launches with something rather special: a timely reissue of the headline cut from South African jazz musician Don Laka's 1986 EP "Stages Of Love". The track is reminiscent of some of countryman Hugh Masekela's work from the same period, with Laka conjuring up a breezy, dancefloor-ready synth-pop/electrofunk workout rich in thrilling electric piano solos, heady vocals and funk-fuelled synth-bass. Scandolearic overlord Prins Thomas gets busy on the flip, serving up a superb re-edit that stretches out the original's groovy instrumental parts before introducing the vocals. As usual with the Full Pupp boss, the edit tends towards the epic (it clocks in around nine minutes); however, given the quality of Laka's original an extension was well overdue.

In fact, his recent releases have been among the strongest of his career to date. The third part of his ongoing "My Life At 45" series is another belter, with opener "A Matter of Time" - featuring talented, fast-rising vocalist Izo FitzRoy - being a particularly strong exercise in revivalist 1960s soul. Elsewhere across the EP, "Slim's Mood" is a fine chunk of hazy rhythm and blues featuring some awesome, Peter Green style jazz guitar solos, while closing cut "Moody Drums" is a chunky beats track tailor-made for funk and hip-hop DJs who like to get busy in the mix.

Driscoll's emotive, soulful vocals pair beautifully with Auger's masterful Hammond organ and the Trinity's dynamic instrumentation. The title track in particular is a real anthem of its day and is sure to make just a s much of a mark all these years on.

Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & The Trinity - "Jeannine" (2:12)
Brian Auger & The Trinity - "In & Out" (2:59)
Review: BDQ's next limited 7" is a superb three-way collab between Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & The Trinity. Their long-lost version of classic dancer 'Jeannine' is powered by wandering basslines and swinging Hammond Organ chords that bring warmth to the free-flowing jazz vocals up top. It has never before been on 45rpm and has been all but unknown for the last 50 years but was recently rediscovered while the label head was looking for something else for the recent 'Auger Incorporated' compilation on Soul Bank Music. On the flip is a mod jazz dancer who is just as hip and ready to make an impact.

Au Right (3:23)
Review: 'My Soul' is a jazz-dance giant from George Duke. Jerome Richardson and Luis Gasca also feature on this crucial 7" with the superb funky that is 'Au Right' on the flip. Both of these jams are taken from The Inner Source, a landmark album from George Duke back in 1971. It was way ahead of its time for the way the Duke paired electric experimentation with Latin percussion and African instrumentation. He did so while he was a pianist playing for Cannonball Adderley. This new 45rpm has been taken from the master tapes and pressed at Pallas so sounds superb.

What's Up (instrumental) (4:21)
Space Between Us (instrumental) (4:16)
Review: If you heard this collaboration between female vocal duo Ekkah and Dam Funk without knowing the identities of those involved, you would automatically assume that it was a little-known '80s soul EP. Both of the original tracks showcased here - "What's Up" and "Space Between Us" - sparkle with authentic 1980s synth-soul flavours, from the use of distinctive TR-808 cowbells and tactile synthesized basslines, to the vibrant colours of producer Dam Funk's colourful chords and melodies. Ekkah's vocals, too, are deliciously evocative and emotion-rich, conjuring images of cruising down Sunset Boulevard in the early hours in a soft-top convertible, killer boogie jams playing on the radio. The silkscreen sleeve is a thing of rare beauty, too.
