Matty & Mandaworld - "Warm You" (4:30)
Mandaworld - "Spoonfeed" (3:19)
Review: Mr Bongo serves up the new collaboration here from Mandaworld (bereft known as Amanda Hicks) and partner Matthew Tavares, who is Matty of the much loved jazz outfit BADBADNOTGOOD. The pair have a magical musical synergy that really shines through here as they interweave and uplift one another. 'Warm You' is a real classic that fits in the canon of timeless ballads. It is a dreamy pop song doused in oodles of reverberating guitars and mellow shoegaze vibes that evokes a world of nostalgic feelings. 'Spoonfeed' is just as warm and lush but a little more subdued.

Review: Canadian singer-songwriter June McDoom makes something rather unclassifiable; poppy-noisy smatterings of sound and melody with influences from jazz, blues and soul, but combined in such a way as to not be as easily categorisable as that combination might normally make out. Her latest self-titled project here collects a slew of personal intimations and ballads reflecting a wealth of young life experiences, relationships and emotions. The extent of its sensitivity can only be sought in between the grit, as there's a deep well of texture embedded in every track, but listen between the lines (and take a peek at its collaborations with artists like Sufjan Stevens, Neko Case, Iron & Wine and Andrew Bird), and you'll soon glean a solid idea for its stated, romantic intent.

Review: ukuoka-based band MuchaMuchaM, known for their breakthrough debut album Qantikala, returns with a collaborative EP featuring Malaysian singer-songwriter Zee Avi. After performing together at The Creators' Co-Write stage in 2023, the two artists have crafted a unique sound that blends their distinct Asian influences. The EP features the modern acoustic track 'Day By Day', a cover of 'Sad and Unfulfilled' and the Asian dance number 'Oyasumi na Sayang', sung in Malay. The EP's cover artwork, inspired by Borneo, was designed by Fukuoka-based illustrator TOYAMEG, further enhancing its cross-cultural appeal.

Review: This Record Store Day 2019 exclusive finds Mumford and Sons at work in the famous Electric Lady Studios in New York. It was there that they decided to serve up four carefully reimagined versions of tracks from their acclaimed Delta album. Each one shows a different, incredibly tender side. 'Woman' is first with its gentle piano keys and closely mic-ed vocals soothing the soul, while 'Guiding Light' has more upbeat but still lo-fi guitar riffs and 'Wild Heart' is another showcase of the beautifully raw and emotive vocals of lead singer Marcus Oliver Johnston Mumford. 'If I Say' is a rousing, heart swelling closer.

Review: Mumford & Sons drop a surprise single release alongside Pharrell Williams, 'Good People', delivering on a long-awaited promise to hop in the studio together after years of knowing each other. Finally falling back on their immediate instincts, 'Good People' hears the band and the solo wunderkind sing of tiredness and revelation, making adept use of a dry, driving, sportsmanlike instrumental palette (think hand claps, stomps, gospel harmonies). Though cryptic in theme, the mood on this one-off is one of triumph and impending miracle works to come.

Review: It's often the albums that fall between the cracks that are the greatest. Violin virtuoso and singer Andrew Bird and Americana singer-songwriter Madison Cunningham shine a light on the underrated pre-Fleetwood Mac gem of an album, Buckingham Nicks, by fully covering it. Released five years before Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham went on to have mega success with Rumours, Buckingham Nicks was such a flop commercially that they were dropped by their label Polydor. But it is a cracking album and in covering it in their own style and having a palpably strong musical connection as a duo themselves, Bird and Cunningham have done it absolute justice and changed it. They have shed the 70s pop sheen of the original and made something more timeless to behold. 'Stephanie' is moody, majestic and cosmic and 'Without A Leg To Stand On' is one of the most stirring vocal performances you'll hear in 2024. A highly rewarding listen throughout.

Review: The nearly mythical Buckingham Nicks from 1973, featuring Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, has gained significant acclaim despite its original obscurity. With no CD or streaming availability, its tracks are typically found only through rare vinyl copies or dubious online rips. Enter Andrew Bird and Madison Cunningham, whose collaborative project, Cunningham Bird, breathes new life into this largely forgotten album. Produced by Mike Viola, this reinterpretation strips away the original's heavy production, showcasing Bird's exquisite violin and Cunningham's smooth vocals. Their shared harmonies replace the tension that characterised the Buckingham-Nicks dynamic, transforming songs like 'Long Distance Winner' into poignant laments. Notably, 'Lola (My Love)' is reimagined as a heartfelt ballad akin to Dolly Parton's 'Jolene', adding depth to the material. Bird and Cunningham's interpretations not only honour the original but also enhance it, proving the songs' flexibility and enduring appeal. Their unique sound and vibrant acoustic instrumentation, offer a fresh perspective for a new generation, making Cunningham Bird a compelling and accessible homage to a classic.

Review: Violin extraordinaire and singer Andrew Bird teams up with an Americana icon, whose star has risen and is continuing to rise - Madison Cunningham. Bird says of Cunningham that she is one of the most talented musicians he's ever encountered. Together they've covered the 1973 album Buckingham Nicks - Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham's pre-Fleetwood Mac LP and done a brilliant job of it. Buckingham Nicks was a flop commercially when it was released and despite the duo's subsequent success it was never remastered or re-released digitally, so hard to come by. Thankfully, Cunningham and Bird bring this underrated gem into the limelight and do so in style. "The best reason to cover anyone is that little part of you that thinks you might do it better. This album epitomizes excess and confidence and it only made sense to embody that spirit ourselves," says Bird in a press release. And he's quite right - there's no misplaced arrogance here - they've nailed this homage to a classic.

Review: It's 1999 and Haruomi Hosono and pal Makoto Kubota - the latter arguably best known for their part in Les Rallies Denudes - decide to take on a daring project for the era. The Japanese artists opt to put out an album inspired by one of the world's foremost musical cities, New Orleans, which on paper couldn't be much further removed from the soundtrack of their homeland at that time.

Dig deeper, though, and while the Mississippi blues feels resolutely Deep South, an experience at odds with the Far East, Japan's incredibly fertile music scene back then actually shared more in common with Louisiana's aural calling cards than you might think. A hotbed of ideas, an understanding of what funk and soul mean, mastery of jazz's loose structures. Exceptional stuff, finally on re-issue

Review: Demon Music present a career-spanning collection of 25 of Kirsty MacColl's most popular recordings on a 2xLP set. Between her June 1979 debut single 'They Don't Know' and her tragic death in 2000, Kirsty released five studio albums and seventeen singles, a succinct but consistently high quality body of work, much of it self-written or in partnership with notable collaborators like Graham Gouldman or Johnny Marr. Whether exploring themes of love and loss, or applying her original and often witty worldview, Kirsty's talent as a songwriter and singer is instantly apparent on this new compilation. She was equally adept at throwing new light on old favourites - look no further than her (some might say better than the original) covers of The Kinks' 'Days', and Billy Bragg's 'A New England', both included here.

Review: Holly Macve's third album, Wonderland, is a stunning testament to her evolving artistry and a bold declaration of independence. Released under her own Loving Memory Records, this album is her most luxurious and cinematic work to date. Co-produced with Dan Rothman of London Grammar, it features string arrangements by David Saunders and a notable collaboration with Lana Del Rey, who has lauded Macve's voice as one of the world's most beautiful. Reflecting a period of profound personal transformation, Wonderland captures Macve's journey through moments of intense highs and lows. The album's first single, 'San Fran Honey,' explores the theme of unattainable love, blending nostalgia with self-awareness. Macve's evocative, dreamy style resonates with the cinematic quality of Lana Del Rey's work, drawing comparisons between their approaches to music. Wonderland is an exciting exploration of Macve's growth and a showcase of her unique, atmospheric sound.

Review: The Magick Brother & Mystic Sister are in fact not a brother-sister duo, but rather a quartet made up of musicians Eva Muntada, Marc Tena, Maya Fernandez and Xavi Sandoval. Active since 2020 and their debut self-titled EP, this light occultic outfit have since built a rep for weaving flying-carpeted tapestries of narration, sonic reverie, and mysticism in album form; their latest record Tarot II is no exception this rule, coming as the second to name itself after the card-reading divination practice common to the Western esoteric world and beyond. Out from an opening, what sounds to be hammered dulcimered prog progression ('Strength') and moving through to a further ten tracks each named after tarot cards (save for the 'Unnamed Arcane', an apocryphal confabulation of the band - have they drawn a hand we haven't?), this is a record of supreme mystique, and one for the witches and warlocks in our ranks.

Review: Magick Brother & Mystic Sister took inspiration for their name from a serial Gong album, and sure enough this Barcelona-based four-piece know exactly where they're aiming with their heavily psychedelic, tripped-out strain of cosmic rock. Following on from their self-titled debut, now the band are back with the first instalment of a two-part album release called Tarot - so far, so mystic. The groove on 'The Hierophant' is a great place to start in diving into the intoxicating headspace of the band, where some outernational instrumentation collides with the propulsive krautrock-informed rhythm section and the Canterbury scene's affinity for funk. It's a visceral trip no self-respecting pscyhonaut should be without.

It was thought to be a lost recording until it recently showed up and now gets fully revived by Strut. There are strong political links between these countries which no doubt adds weight to this musical link up. It is a great exchange of cultures from parables to laments on child abuse to tunes that fuse reggae, jazz and post-punk with township styles.

Review: The exquisite 1974 debut album by American pianist, guitarist, producer and songwriter Gary Marks hears a deserving reissue through Lantern Heights. Now a published fiction and non-fiction author, Marks' early musical career ended all to shortly, and was Marked sonically by sweetened contemporary jazz and folk arrangements, heard best on this homeward but still subtly cosmic opening statement of an LP. The open-ended, pathetic-fallacious 'Sherry's Song' is our twinging piece de resistance, with Marks serenading a young flame as the object of his gushing folksy affections, while the immediate follower 'Gathering' indulges a completely "other" set of progged-out emotions. 'We Free' unites the two through a bossa nova downturn, and 'A Gina Theme' isolates the vibraphone in a kind of giant sonic glasshouse, serving as one of several interludes that steadfastly beautify the record.

Review: If you were indeed wondering why, well, Gary Marks doesn't claim to have the answers. Amid an honorary reissue campaign of this under-storied musician's early LPs by P-Vine (after he moved on to become a published fiction and non-fiction writer), Marks' third record from 1978 stands out among this folky jazz singer's best. After his debut record Gathering and then the sophomore Upon Aonda's Wing, this ponderous yet sprightly record follows Marks' relocation to the West Coast of the USA in 1976, after which he began working with Art Rande and Oregon member Paul McCandles. Considered his masterpiece by many, this hidden avant-garde folk jazz diamond contains stirring narratives, cathartic piano ballads, and hum-along heart-pinchers, weaving twin threads of personal disclosure and mystery Americana.

Now eight albums and 15 years into her career, Patterns in Repeat was written following the birth of her daughter in 2023 and finds Laura reflecting on her motherhood experience, as well as more broadly diving deeper into her reckoning with the ideas and behaviours we pass down through family over generations. Dedicated to girlhood, Marling's sense of perspective is noticeable here; we journey with her through the recognition of the 'Patterns' of life (having a child of our own causes us to remember all sorts) as well as the utterable reassurances, such as 'No One's Gonna Love You Like I Can'. Motivic throughout is the sense in which the experience of having children isn't communicable, because Marling herself is lost for words.

Review: Another great concert from the successful WDR Rockpalast series, recorded live on March 17, 1983 at Audiomax, Hamburg (Germany). Including the bonus track 'Look At That Girl' from the album Die Aktuelle Stunde, Martyn's impassioned vocals and dazzling guitar make this an extraordinary concert performance, one for the ages if we're to be any guide. Coming shortly on the heels of Martyn's sophomore 1977 album One World, which was in part dedicated to his depressed contemporary Nick Drake, we hear his distinctive fingerstyle picking on full display here, as well as his rare live use of an acoustic guitar run through a patented Martyn-esque effects chain: fuzzbox, phase shifter and an Echoplex.

From there, McAlpine navigates through the highs and lows of relationships in tracks like 'Come Down Soon' and 'Like It Tends To Do,' where she grapples with insecurity and uncertainty. Throughout Older, McAlpine's songwriting prowess shines as she candidly explores her personal experiences, including the death of her father and her own struggles with mental health. Tracks like 'All Falls Down' and 'March' offer poignant reflections on grief and resilience, while 'Vortex' delivers a powerful climax with its haunting vocals and stirring instrumentation. With each track, McAlpine expertly crafts a sonic landscape that draws listeners in, weaving together lush instrumentals with her emotive voice. From the tender piano chords to the soaring violins, every element of Older feels purposeful and deeply evocative.

Review: This collection takes us back to singer/songwriter Cass McCombs formative years, offering up music recorded between 1999 and 2001 while he was living in San Francisco. McCoombs subsequently washed up in New York, on the back of extensive touring of the United States, and bagged a deal with 4AD. Effectively, this is an "origin story" release that showcases material laid to tape in a Bay Area apartment, rather than a professional studio. Atmospheric and naturally lo-fi, the recordings are rooted in a laidback Americana and electric neo-folk, albeit with a woozy, dreamy and meditative, effects-laden finish. Sparse, heady and with a vocal style that leans towards 'Screamadelica' era Bobby Gillespie, it's a fine collection of previously unheard gems.

Review: The first-ever vinyl reissue of a rare folk treasure from Shelagh McDonald, featuring Richard & Danny Thompson, Keith Christmas, and members of Mighty Baby & Fotheringay in the back. First released in 1971 and produced by the legendary Sandy Roberton, Stargazer has earned a devoted following for its blend of folk, psychedelia, and adventurous production, which spruce up McDonald's exquisite songwriting and puce, haunting vocals. Fans of Pentangle, Incredible String Band, and Joni Mitchell will find much to love, as will admirers of David Crosby's 'If Only I Could Remember My Name' and Gene Clark's 'No Other'. A long-overdue reissue, this one also marks the debut for Different Strokes For Different Folks, a new label dedicated to unearthing rare and cult classics, with more set for 2025.

Review: If you've seen the movie Synecdoche, New York, the idea of an artwork taking on a life of its own and eventually consuming the creator will be pretty familiar. Charlie Kaufmann's typically strange triumph is, of course, far from the only film that approaches this kind of subject matter, and in many ways the concept is bound to grow more relevant with the onset of AI creativity. Just who, or what, has made that piece of work? Etcetera etcetera.
Tom Cox is also no stranger to these ends. His debut novel - but 13th book - was published in April 2022. Villager draws on the author's passion for nature, music and folklore in a psychedelic trip through small settlement life, and in the pages we meet RJ McKendree. Now that name has an album, Wallflower, written, produced and developed by Cox, which is every bit the hazy late-60s folk rock masterpiece that never was.

Some of McLean's most popular songs from his five-decade career, as well as some rare and unreleased tracks, all appear on this multifaceted wax compendium. Also included are the waltzing 'Since I Don't Have You', the cinematic megaproduction 'Crying', the tearjerking utopian linedance 'Jerusalem', and the film-referencing, spoken word, walking-basser 'It's A Beautiful Life'.

Review: Oklahoma roots rocker JD McPherson returns with Nite Owls, his much anticipated return, six years in the making, since the thought-to-be unbeatable Christmas album Socks released in 2018, as well as a mid-pandemic covers EP. For this nocturnal turn, McPherson alters his approach, sidelining the majority of the musicians that accompanied him on all previous sessions and live dates, and keeping only guitarist/sax player Doug Corcoran. Along with that change in personnel, comes a revised style that attempts, usually successfully, to incorporate McPherson's Duane Eddy-fashioned guitar (the album is dedicated to the late rockabilly icon who passed in May of this year) with a moderately new-wave infused sound.

Review: Formed in Phoenix circa 1980, Meat Puppets carved out a very specific sound for themselves under the beating hot Arizona sun. A combination of alternative rock, cowpony, psyche, alternative country, punk and post punk, they also employ elements of hard rock and heavy metal (that solo on 'Automatic Mojo', and the propellant bassline) while stitching together their patchwork quilt of sounds with a six string. Recorded in 1999, Live In Montana showcases the group at their loudest and most immediately infectious. Captured during two back-to-back live shows at the Sundance Club, Bozeman, and Top Hat Club, Missoula, covers of Lionel Hampton, UTFO, Roy Orbison, Holocaust, Black Sabbath and Elvis Presley jostle for position next to original material from these kings of southern curveballs.

Review: Beginning life in the late 70s as a Leeds based art collective, The Mekons have gone on to become one of the longest-running, most prolific and sonically diverse acts to be considered part of the first wave of British punk. Spanning numerous decades, projects and literal continents, the sprawling array of visionary contributors return with the succinctly titled Horror; a work written towards the end of 2022 that showcases their expansive yet solely unique approach, drawing on elements of dub, country, harsh noise, rock & roll, electronica, punk, music hall, polka and even waltz. Myriad vocalists lead differing sonic journeys such as the Jon Langford-led 'Mudcrawlers' telling the story of the Irish famine and subsequent refugees traversing to Wales, whereas Rico Bell leads the charge on the harrowing folk-horror climate change breakdown 'Fallen Leaves', with swelling violins painting an aural tapestry akin to Rolling Thunder era Dylan sitting on a dimly lit rolling green hill accompanied by The Pogues. Ranking somewhere between the collective's 23rd to 25th album (depending on which member of the fanbase or artists themselves you ask), Horror marks their first work for Fire Records.

Review: Released in 1970, this album stands as one of Melanie’s most significant albums. It features her third studio effort, highlighted by the Top Ten single 'Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)', which was inspired by the enthusiastic response to her Woodstock performance. The album also includes a touching cover of The Rolling Stones' 'Ruby Tuesday'. which reached the Top Ten in the UK. Melanie’s voice, both beautiful and emotive, remains one of the album’s greatest strengths, evoking deep feelings and occasionally giving listeners goosebumps. While the songwriting is rooted in the folk-pop style of the Woodstock era—sometimes quirky and occasionally flat—the lyrics are generally well-crafted and deeply sincere. Melanie’s ability to connect with her audience emotionally is undeniable and continues to resonate, showcasing a voice and style that have endured the test of time.

Review: This is a solo album in the true sense of the word. It's comprised solely of Ava Mendoza's raw virtuoso avant rock guitar playing and - on two tracks - her passionate voice. The Brooklyn-via-Oakland musician is also known for being a skilled collaborator, with the her band Unnatural Ways having earned a stellar reputation, but limiting the spotlight to herself alone here serves to elevate the searching, personal themes on the record. Mendoza's is famed for her virtuoso guitar technique, with lightning-quick tapping, use of feedback and tremolo up there with the best in the business. This is a melange of classical, free jazz, blues and noise, to name a few. With technique this strong, it's no wonder she's been setting the New York experimental scene alight over the past few years. And with The Circular Train - merely her second solo album - we can hope there's many more to come.

Review: Imagine a blend of Henry David Thoreau and Neil Young's 'After the Gold Rush', with a touch of Laurel Canyon introspection and a yearning for something just beyond reach and you're close to the essence of Midlake's breakthrough album. Wistful melodies and enigmatic narratives make for a sonic landscape pitched somewhere between 1871, 1971 and a realm entirely out of time. Tracks like 'Roscoe' and 'Bandits' shimmer with a romantic yearning for simpler times, while 'Head Home' and 'Van Occupanther' delve into the introspective musings of outcasts and dreamers. Its instrumentation is rich and varied, with dreamy horns, rolling guitars and plaintive pianos weaving a tapestry of sound that perfectly complements the elusive narratives. 'Young Bride', 'Branches', and 'In This Camp' showcase the band's vocal harmonies and their ability to craft melodies that linger long after the music fades.

Review: French-British singer-songwriter and performance artist Lucy Sissy Miller opens Pre Country with noises that don't feel remotely close to country - more Imogen Heap than Patsy Cline. But as the record finds its gear, reference are changed through a moody and mysterious veil of latter-day Patti Smith and the oeuvre of Laurie Anderson. A meditation on Americana which recognises its folk roots but isn't afraid to embrace the high tech of today, either. Pieced together using journal notes, poems, voice memos, found and collected, manipulated and obscured sounds, it's a reflective and quiet, tender kind of place to find yourself - a record that asks for patience and rewards you with increasing immersion. "It'a an album about memories and how we stitch up these moments, making them movie-like to make sense of these experiences," says Miller. We'll leave it at that.

Review: The Hissing of Summer Lawns marked a turning point in Joni Mitchell's career, emerging four decades ago as a radical departure from her earlier work. While albums like Blue and Court and Spark established her as a confessional singer-songwriter, Hissing ventured into new territories, blending jazz and African influences with a more complex pop sound. The album's characters, primarily women, grapple with existential disconnection, often revealing a sense of unworthiness and emotional estrangement. Critics initially found the album jarring, noting the absence of first-person narratives and traditional melodies. Instead, Mitchell crafted a lush soundscape reminiscent of Miles Davis's freeform style, allowing her musicians the freedom to shape the music. While Hissing debuted at #4 on the charts, it quickly fell off, perceived as too esoteric for mainstream audiences. Over time, its innovative spirit has influenced a new generation of artists from Prince to Bjork, who resonate with its harmonically rich and experimental nature.

The 1971 classic album by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, Blue is widely thought by many music lovers to be one of the best albums of all time. Already well into her career by the time of its release - it's her fourth album - it was certainly Mitchell's best yet, reflecting a period in her life where she took a break from touring and live performing to focus on creation. Its confessional and poetic lyrics, not to mention the distinctively groggy yet idyllic guitar and piano playing on songs like 'All I Want', 'River', 'A Case Of You', heard Mitchell encapsulate the various milestones, Renaissances and turning points of the contemporary rock landscape of the 1970s, into a singular LP.

The album, produced by David Crosby, features Mitchell's introspective lyrics and intricate guitar work. With ethereal vocals, she crafts vivid narratives exploring love, freedom, and self-discovery. The title track, a gentle ode to nature, sets the tone for the album's contemplative atmosphere. Mitchell's ability to blend intricate melodies with profound lyricism establishes Song To A Seagull as a harbinger of her influential and enduring career, laying the foundation for the ensuing evolution that saw her grow ever more revered in her field

Review: The music of Joni Mitchell will never go out of fashion and so it is that much of it is in the middle of a big reissue run. Joni's voice and songwriting has rarely ever been topped by anyone in any genre, let alone the folk and Americana worlds she is best known in. Song To A Seagull is one of many long player testaments to that and was a remarkable debut in 1968 which soon marked her out in a class of one. The album is known for having been mixing poorly the first time around so has been sharpened up for this reissue meaning both sides of the record - labeled 'I Came to the City' and 'Out of the City and Down to the Seaside' - sound superb.

But she's been putting out consistently fantastic records since the mid-1990s, debuting with Rara (not including the original score to the movie Juana y sus hermanas back in 1991) and is the sort of artist you don't forget once you discover. Allow Exhalo to open the door on this South American titan of folktronica, casting spells with a combination of lo-fi indie electronic, curveball pop, and progressive folk, with some influences also stemming from her upbringing as the daughter of tango legend Horacio Molina and actor Chunchuna VillafaNe. A deep and captivating listen that seduces you from the word go, this is one not to be missed if you can help it.

Review: Annelies Monsere's Mares album takes us deep into the contemporary underground of Belgium as she serves up some fascinating and experimental new ambient and modern classical compositions. They are raw and deep and draw on plenty of the traditions of European folk. The album was written between 2016 and 2022 and is full of contrasts - adventurous new synth sounds, organic folk moods, brooding minimalism and complex harmonies. It was made using the guitar and piano and was conceived as "adding similar layers upon each other with (slightly) different hues". It's a beguiling new work littered with her own vocals which make it all the more impactful.

Review: Annelies's album I Sigh, I Resign continues her intimate and introspective approach, following the success of her previous LP Mares. Recorded at home in Gent over several years, the album maintains the closeness of its predecessor with its focus on keyboard and vocal nuances. While rooted in folk and early music, Annelies expands her sound with piano, organ, bass guitar, cello, synth, and drum machine, creating a contemporary yet timeless record. The album cover, featuring Annelies's sketches of female artists from the Dutch Golden Age, sets the tone for the music's exploration of power dynamics and questioning of historical narratives. Standout tracks include the rhythmic 'Salt' and the tense folk/post-rock fusion of 'Simple Fractures.' A tender moment arises with her cover of Jean Ritchie's 'One I Love,' performed with her son. I Sigh, I Resign is a poignant reflection on personal and universal themes, offering a defiant message of growth and liberation despite its title's suggestion of resignation.

Review: Moondog's H'art Songs stands out as a defining moment in his illustrious career, marking the first release to omit his name from the title. Recorded in his sixties, this rare vocal album comprises ten art songs that deftly blur the lines between classical and pop music. Dubbed "H'art songs" for Hardin's art, the compositions showcase a musical sophistication that appeals to both pop and classical enthusiasts. Released in 1977, this collection enriches Moondog's eclectic discography, featuring mesmerising wordplay that conveys narratives ranging from political commentary to nature appreciation, all wrapped in poetic intrigue. Moondog's unique singing style, devoid of vibrato, allows for accessibility, encouraging listeners to join in. He intentionally simplified the vocal lines, leaving the intricate harmonies to the piano, which carries the melodic weight of the songs. This album is undeniably one of Moondog's most impactful releases.

Review: American singer-songwriter Kevin Morby returns with More Photographs, the follow-up to the acclaimed LP This Is A Photograph. The companion LP continues to flesh out the former album's themes of life, death, and memory - portrayed through a mix of autobiographical and fictional stories - revisiting and reimagining several of its songs from an alternative perspective and mood. Morby puts it best: if This Is A Photograph was an impression of "a house that you have been living inside of, then More Photographs is, perhaps, the same home just experienced differently. As if you, its inhabitant, have taken a tab of something psychedelic and now, suddenly, you've replaced your eyeglasses with kaleidoscopes." Morby's poetic lyrics collide well with its atmospheric, revelatory arrangements, all while doing equal justice to its collabs with the likes of Katie Crutchfield and Sam Cohen.

Review: American indie rock singer-songwriter Kevin Morby presents his seventh studio album More Photographs. A companion piece to his previous album Sundowner, More Photographs features songs that were recorded during the same sessions but did not make the final cut - each piece truly sounds like a "photograph", snapshots of time left in dusty old attic-bound photo albums or in ramshackle boxes. New takes on the previous album's songs, including a reprisal version of 'Don't Underestimate Midwest American Sun', lend a more honest perspective on the polished originals, also released on Dead Oceans.

Review: Over the past decade, Michael Morley has transformed his approach, embracing the acoustic guitar to channel the somber undercurrents that have defined his music since the early 1980s. Known for his experimental electric guitar work with The Dead C and Gate, Morley has always harboured a passion for song form. Recently, discovering neglected Spanish and classical guitar records in South Dunedin's thrift shops was a revelation. These 1950s and '60s gems inspired Morley to craft a fresh musical language, drawing from composers like De Fossa, Ponce, and Villa-Lobos, as well as classical giants like Schubert and Haydn. Pushed Streets, recorded at his home in Koputai / Port Chalmers, New Zealand, masterfully showcases this evolution. The album features 12 ethereal tracks where quiet chords and melodies float in a haunting atmosphere. Morley's distinct voice, subtly double-tracked, delivers lyrics with an almost whispered intimacy. Using two 1970s Guild guitars, he creates a rich, dynamic sound that resonates deeply. This intimate, unadorned music echoes the poignant loneliness of Skip Spence, Bill Fay, and Loren Connors, yet stands uniquely apart with its blend of classical and avant-garde influences. Pushed Streets is a hauntingly beautiful exploration of Morley's new acoustic direction.

Review: Lucky is the debut album from Megan Moroney, who is fast becoming one of the brightest new talents out of Nashville. Her take on the country tradition is the perfect blend of classic and contemporary, but of course it's all about the star at the centre of the sound and Moroney's voice conveys heartbreak and fortitude in equal measure. Produced by Kristian Bush, the album more than lives up to her CMT award for Female Breakout Video of the Year for 'Tennessee Orange' and a swathe of other plaudits that ensure we're going to hear plenty more from Moroney in the years to come. This deluxe edition of the album comes across two discs, with the fourth side reserved for an etching making this an unmissable collectors item for Moroney's swelling fanbase.
