Review: This compilation started out life as a CD-only release. Now it makes it to vinyl courts of Vinyl-On-Demand and gets expanded for the occasion. Zoviet France is actually a music group from Newcastle upon Tyne. They have put out a vast wealth of albums - 27 since 1982 - and all of them are experimental, at times dissonant. Drawing on industrial textures, they also touch on drone and ambient and pull you deep into their own unique sound world as a result.

Review: Hot on the heels of a spate of reissues focusing on Zoviet France's work in the early-to-mid 1980s, we're being treated to a new vinyl edition of one of the band's most sought-after sets, 1988's Shouting at the Ground. Made up primarily of short sound experiments crafted using a mixture of tape loops, samples, effects units and a limited range of instruments, the album's 13 tracks sit somewhere between Muslimgauze, proto-type drone, music concrete and the more ambient works of fellow 1980s experimentalists Cabaret Voltaire. While at times unsettling, much of the set is surprisingly meditative and exceptionally atmospheric; an otherworldly excursion that should appeal to experimentalists and ambient heads old and new.

Review: Those with far greater knowledge of Zoviet France's vast catalogue have long said that 1993's What is Not True is one of their most underrated and overlooked albums. Originally released on CD, it has now finally been given a vinyl pressing. It's well worth a listen, in part because it's a dark, pagan and ritualistic affair full of lengthy, exaggerated compositions that mix drowsy, unsettling ambient chords and macabre electronic tones with trippy, processed instrument sounds (drunken violins, for example), field recordings, spoken word snippets, slowly-shapeshifting refrains and the kind of exotic, Arabic-influenced percussion that was once the hallmark of the late, great Muslimgauze. Immersive, meditative and melancholic, it's the kind of album you'll want to get lost in.

Review: "A Flock Of Rotations" is the final reissue from Vinyl On Demand's ongoing focus on cult Newcastle upon Tyne group Zoviet France whose dissonant, industrial and droning sounds were influential throughout the eighties and nineties. This album is one of the best - it blurs the lines between ambient and psychedelic sounds, post-rock and noise on often scratchy tracks, with gauzy surfaces mired in grit and grizzled guitars. Adding an element of terror are distressed human cries and mangled folk vocals that make things bleak yet beguiling throughout.
