Review: Dr. Afrodub by Ghanaian artist Ekowmania, aka Ekow Alabi Savage, is a standout in Afro-centric dub concoctions. He is a drummer, percussionist and singer with over two decades of experience alongside Jimi Tenor & Kabukabu and here he explores classic roots reggae, Afrobeat and dub along with some more modernist African rhythms. The whole record was produced by the great Jimi Tenor and started after a tribute song to Kwame Nkrumah which was recorded at guitarist Lauri Kallio's studio in Finland. The nine tracks bring great intensity of rhythm and include standout songs like 'Twerk Your Mind,' 'Dub Souljah,' and 'Me Know' while also featuring a remix from the one and only DJ Sotofett.

Review: There's an awful lot going on here, and as such plenty to talk about. Alternative Funk: Volume 1 is both a compilation and reissue, with the original outing landing on cassette in the early-1980s on VP231, a label set up by Pacific 231, AKA Pierre Jolivet. The albums were the brainchild of Axel Kyrou and Francis Man, founders of the legendary Vox Populi!, and their aim was to showcase far out sounds, at least som of which were their own.
What we have in the modern iteration is a snapshot of that expansive and often hallucinatory aural odyssey, with seminal and lesser known artists resting side-by-side on the track list. Stylistically broad, running the gamut from dub percussion to cold wave and industrial, it's yet more evidence of just how fertile a decade the 80s were.

Review: Stockholm-based multi-instrumentalist and composer Art Longo impresses here with Echowah Island, a new album sure to wind its way into your affections. It was crafted over years in his home studio and is "psychotropical pop" drawing deep inspiration from late 80s music and dub. The album's lush soundscape evokes orange sunsets and ocean breezes and is layered with spring reverb, space echo and wah-wah effects that smooth out the edges as the steady pulse of vintage drum machines moves things on down low. It's all spectacular, of course, but our current favourites include a chugging, 2009 punk-funk revision of Doves' 'Compulsion', the post-punk dub headiness of Audiobooks' 2018 cut 'Dance Your Life Away', a vintage, electro-fired Two Lone Swordsmen dub of Saint Etienne and a rare, percussion-rich and extremely hard to find Sabres of Paradise tweak of Espiritu's 'Boninta Manana'.

Review: First released in the UK by Tottenham-based Atra Records in 1974, The Black Breast Has Produced Her Best Flesh of My Skin Blood By Blood has long been considered one of the edgiest roots albums of the period and a must-have for serious reggae collectors. The album resulted in its creator, the sadly departed Keith Hudson, being dubbed "the dark prince of reggae". Listening back to this welcome reissue, it's easy to see why. For starters, the lyrical content is highly politically charged and righteous, while Hudson's weighty musical arrangements are far more trippy, hazy and dimly lit than those found on most roots reggae records of the period. This edition also includes three additional tracks not found on the original release, plus exhaustive sleeve notes from Hudson biographer Vincent Ellis.

Review: Originally released at a time when Kruder & Dorfmeister reigned supreme and Germany and Austria boasted some of the finest dub-fired downtempo producers around, Bozoo Bajou's debut album, Satta, was something a sleeper hit. As this 25th anniversary reissue proves, it remains a deliciously languid, laidback and glassy-eyed affair that mixes subtly jazzy instrumentation (Rhodes, jazz guitar etc), dubby bass and luscious string arrangements with slow-motion trip-hop beats and dusty samples. The plentiful highlights include 'Night Over Manaus', a samba-soaked shuffler, luscious opener 'YMA', jazzy head-nodder 'Under Mi Sensi' and the exotic, G-Stone style stoned haziness of 'Bakar'.

Review: Paul Dickow is the man behind the Strategy project and this album was first released by Khaliphonic in 2018 and now reissued on wax. The artist has long been thought of as a musical polymath who has spent his life immersed in hardware and crafting unique sounds across the dub spectrum. This record proves that and then some with a mix of dub techno, digi-dub and everything in between. The rhythms are deep and involving, the synths often icy and the percussion is just enough to elevate each tune next to sci-fi signifiers and cosmic motifs.

Review: Is there a more famous nutcase in music than Lee Scratch Perry? The legendary producer is still very much on the musical money, though, no matter how weird he gets in person. This record for Stones Throw finds him working with Peaking Lights' Aaron Coyes and Argentinian dubber Ivan Diaz Mathe on a series of heavyweight tunes that are brilliantly psychedelic. The title track is a cosmic stepper then "No Age" is a wandering dub with oodles of trippy effects and stoner leads that make way for some of his textbook vocal musings on "Magik." After immersive closer "No Age" you'll be keen to do it all again.

Review: After plenty of anticipation, UK dub mainstays Dub Dynasty finally unleash their fourth studio album following lots of extensive, worldwide touring. Much loved in many of the sound system communities of the world, the outfit brings underlying messages of peace and unity, which we all need plenty of right now. Next to the lyrical positivity, the beats are crisp and uplifting too, with polished metal bass, steely hits and oodles of digital effects all making these soul soothing, brain-cleansing jams. Review: SND & RTN show their class here with a set of six sublime dub techno cuts that have been pressed to nice solver and heavyweight vinyl. There is nothing groundbreaking about the music here but what is done is done to an exceptionally high standard. The sound designs are faultless, from the bottomless bass to the pilot kick drums via the way in which their fizzing chords do nimble dances over the face of each tune. Some lean into the wind, some are utterly horizontal, all are great.

Review: Kevin Griffiths (aka Jura Soundsystem) is the man behind the Isle of Jura label and now it turns to Ambient Warrior once more for II, which comes a couple of years after the hugely successful reissue of their Dub's Journey album form 1995. This is a previously unreleased record made between 1995 and 1999 and it comes from the same pool of sound as that LP. It's a seamless blend of instrumental dub, reggae, bossa nova and tango music that is hugely immersive and distinctive. Review: Sexo Y Fantasia previously released one EP of brilliantly eccentric music on Glossy Mistakes - in the press release accompanying their debut album, Oneirotic, they're described as a 'Belgian-Italian aural freak show', a fantastic description in anyone's book. It's certainly an inspired, hard-to-pigeonhole set that sees them cloak sparse, shuffling rhythms, tongue-in-cheek spoken word vocals, sun-splashed synth-sounds, baked acid lines and memorable melodies in plenty of delay and reverb. It's a little bit Balearic, a touch new wave, and undeniably quirky. As you can see, we're struggling to accurately describe it, but the key thing is that it's really good - one of the most imaginative, entertaining and off-kilter albums we've heard in 2022.

Review: The Orb's 13th album is a carefully crafted collection of tracks that are couched in minimal techno and ambient house. The first half embraces so-called 'Schaffel' rhythms, while the second half explores classic Orb sonic landscapes and features guest appearances from Schneider TM and Ulf Lohmann. The likes of 'Captain Korma' are warmly infused melodic jaunts with shimmering vocals, 'Cool Harbour' is a lumpy, dubby and off-balance workout and 'Kompagna (Zandic mix)' is a raw, experimental blend of harmonic tones, smeared samples and ambient bliss. This one, then, continues The Orb's legacy of genre-defying music which started in the late 80s when they pioneered chill-out and ambient house.

Review: By the time they recorded "Songs of Praise" in 1990, African Head Charge had gone from being an Adrian Sherwood solo project to a fully-fledged band helmed by percussionist Bonjo Ivabinghi Noah. Here reissued to mark the album's 20th birthday, the set remains arguably the group's greatest single work. While rooted in the twin attractions of heavy dub and dense African percussion, the album makes extensive use of a dizzying array of influences, from gospel, steppers reggae and yacht rock, to traditional Arabic music, blues, disco, religious chants and even industrial music. This edition features a handful of decent bonus tracks, but they're unnecessary: the original album is little less than a masterpiece and should reside in every discerning listener's record collection.

Review: Back in 2010 before his sad passing, the great Lee "Scratch" Perry dropped Revelation, an album made at his second studio in Switzerland, which is where he lived after spending most of his life working from his legendary Black Ark Studio in Jamaica. For this one, he collaborated with Keith Richards and George Clinton to complete what was a three-part series made with English musician and producer Steve Marshall aka John Saxon. It was accompanied day a full-length film offering behind-the-scenes access to the making of the album, which now gets reissued on limited and numbered gatefold 180-gram audiophile translucent yellow vinyl. A real modern classic.

Review: Vaughn Benjamin is the voice of Midnite and Akae Beka and was a prolific reggae vocalist, poet, teacher and scholar known for his photographic memory and creativity. He released over 70 albums in 25 years while always discussing broad, detailed topics with unmatched precision. Living Testament is his final album, recorded shortly before his death in November 2019. In October 2019, Vaughn recorded the 11 tracks at Ras Biblical's Trinity Farm studio in Grass Valley, California, over two days alongside 11 musicians including Tuff Lion and Manuel "Go A Chant" Guerra. The result is sure to endure through the ages as a fine example of roots reggae storytelling.

Review: Sergey Dmitriev and Nikita Chepurnoi resurface as Amkarahoi, the experimental project which, the release notes tell us, have prepared an album that "conjures ghosts of 90s chill out tents, aqueous ambient, exploratory turn of the century IDM and echoes of jammy dub." Borne from a largely improvised show that took place in Saint Petersburg, overdubbed and mixed down, it's patient yet wildly exploratory stuff. Amkarahoi is the name of a remote Siberian region and it's easy to see why the pair picked it for this project's name. Uncle Reed In The Purple Mine sounds desolate and sparse, but once we hone in on the details we realise it's taking us though cold, barren atmospheres and into warm, E-hued soundscapes. A thoughtful yet spontaneous slice of immersive ambient you won't regret committing to.

Review: Ronnie Lion is one half of Ambient Warrior and this is his debut solo outing. It finds him paying homage to Spanish Town, which is the capital of St Catherine in Jamaica and that is apparent from the off with its lush Spanish guitar notes fluttering over the face of the dubbed-out low ends and shiny digital chords. Lead guitarist Sean Wilkinson pays plenty of the guitar and the rhythm section has Ronnie himself on bass while Horseman is on drums to bring a heavy foundation. Up to the intricate and memorable hooks add the colour and charm and elements of Bossa Nova and Flamenco guitar also help add extra layers to this fine debut.
