Review: Originally released in 1999 and now reissued, Beaucoup Fish captures UK techno icons Underworld at their peak popularity. Karl Hyde, Rick Smith and Darren Emerson were just coming off their Trainspotting movie fame due to their legendary track 'Born Slippy'. Following Dubnobasswithmyheadman and Second Toughest in the Infants, this record feels heavier and more restless, mirroring their ambivalence toward their growing profile. Where their previous albums flowed like introspective night drives, Beaucoup Fish often barrels forward with full-throttle energy. Tracks like 'Push Upstairs' and 'Kittens' tear through at blistering tempos, merging techno heft with psychedelic texture. 'Shudder / King of Snake' is the album's pounding centerpiece, a kinetic beast built on a mutated 'I Feel Love' bassline and layers of frenetic percussion. Yet it's on 'Jumbo' and 'Cups' that Underworld tap into something deeper, more elegant and melancholic for solitary moments on packed dance floors. Hyde's cryptic, associative lyricism are half preacher, half poet that add a compelling edge throughout. His stream-of-consciousness delivery turning even the most muscular tracks are very introspective. Review: Returning from a near-decade long hiatus with their first album in eight years, At Peace marks the eighth full-length from Manitoba punk heroes Propagandhi, serving as their follow up to 2017's Victory Lap. Channelling an anti-fascist ethos of skate punk meets thrashcore since 1986, their latest effort showcases a band doing their utmost to come to terms with the despondency they've been warning about since their inception. Recorded shortly before the re-election of Donald Trump and his assertion that the band's home country of Canada become the U.S.'s 51st State, the messaging here is as earnest and vital as ever, yet admittedly more worn out and exhausted following three decades of the same oppressive system, with vocalist Chris Hannah somewhat accepting defeat and altering what we can about our outlook - "Now it's the existential dread of eking out a life worth living in this completely failed society."

This 2025 reissue does it justice, pressed onto heavyweight vinyl with a half-speed cut that gives its deep, hypnotic sonics fresh bite. From the moment 'Juanita : Kiteless : To Dream Of Love' opens with glitchy insistence and locked grooves, it's clear how ahead of its time this was. The glitch-techno swirl of 'Banstyle/Sappy's Curry' and the growling 'Rowla' nod to Sheffield and Detroit in equal measure, while 'Pearl's Girl' pulses with breakbeat aggression and warped vocals, its grit sharpened here by the remaster. 'Confusion the Waitress' and 'Air Towel' show the band at their most meditative, layering ambience and submerged breaks into something closer to sound design than club tool. Even 'Blueski' and 'Stagger'ishorter, sketch-like piecesifeel essential to the album's industrial-sublime mood. Still fiercely modern, still haunted, still euphoric. An artefact of the past that belongs squarely in the now.

Review: Under the Cicciolina alias, Ilona-Elana Anna Staller enjoyed an eclectic career that included spells modelling, making pornographic films, and representing her native country Huungary in Italy's national parliament. Crucially, during the mid-to-late 1980s she also made a string of albums with the assistance of producer Jayhorus. Avec-Toi was one of those sets, with the showcased music being recorded at some point around 1986-87. It's a joyously camp and at times verbally risque affair, with Staller singing and speaking over synth-heavy backing tracks that variously mine Italo-disco, formative Euro-dance, hi-NRG, European synth-pop and contemporaneous adult movie soundtracks for inspiration.

'1000 Light Years DUB' opens with spacey textures and a tightly coiled rhythm section, easing into the skanking horns of 'In The Shadow DUB'. 'Whitewater DUB' flows warm and steady, while 'Memories of Old DUB' evokes roots nostalgia without drifting into pastiche. 'Rose Hall's Birds DUB' stands out for its bright brass interplay; 'Squirrel Inna Barrel DUB' rides a darker groove, led by echo-laden percussion. 'Under The Cotton Tree DUB' softens the tempo with flute and keys, followed by the spacious bass work of '45 Charles Street DUB'. Review: Dominique Baumard's 2025 detective comedy drama, Les Regles de l'art, is a chuckle-inducing exploration of art theft and scandal, reenacting a legendary pilfering of paintings from the Musee d'Art Moderne in Paris in 2010. The plot centres on the trio of thieves who stole €100 million worth of works of art by Picasso, Matisse and Modigliani; they were sentenced to prison, but the paintings were never found. Now the OST by soundtrack artists Lionel LimiNana (more known for his chanson-adjacent project The LimiNanas) and David Menke (more associated with experimental electronica) surfaces. An intermixing of suspenseful legato syntheses and humoured pizzicati help them nail an eternal artistic conundrum - the tradeoff between authenticity of artifice.

Review: Stereolab first formed back in 1990 in London. Record collector Tim Gane hooked up with French chanteuse Laetitia Sadier and they stayed together until 2009, then took a hiatus until retiring to the live arena in 2019. There have only been reissues since, but now the group returns with their first new album in 15 years. It features 13 fresh studio tracks from the avant-pop pioneers who revitalise their sounds with signature motorik grooves and adventurous new textures. Guest appearances from Cooper Crain, Rob Frye and others add rich layers and lead single 'Aerial Troubles' signifies the playful experimentation and sly sophistication you would expect from this band. The album. Overall feels warmly familiar yet thrillingly new.

Review: Adam Winchester and Laurie Osborne (probably still best known as Appleblim) are Wrecked Lightship and they have an inventive approach to dub, breaks and bass. Their work creates an immersive world full of rich, atmospheric textures and the latest example of that is Drained Strands, a new album for Peak Oil full of fragmented, genre-blurring sounds. The six-tracker is full of experimentation and new ideas from the off. 'Delinquent Spirits' for example is a jumble of jungle breaks and vast basslines with minimal percussion, 'Reeling Mist' is warm, blissed out dub and 'Somnium Sands' is an eerie and evocative world of synth designs and industrial decay.

Review: After the chart-topping A Hundred Days Off (2002), what was to come next for the albums arm of Underworld, aka Karl Hyde and Rick Smith? Clearly, it was to be a return to gritty chillout rave schematics - now tapering into ambient dub and progressive - that defined their earliest works, in stark contrast to their mid noughties crowd electrolysers. Review: Australian rapper The Kid Laroi rose to fame in the late 2010s and early 20s after garnering significant attention on SoundCloud, mostly for a keystone collaboration with the late Juice WRLD. Capturing the spirit of the time through relevant emo revivals filtered through hip-hop and pop production of the brittlest degree, Laroi would later rub shoulders with Justin Bieber and Marshmello, furthering an industrially complex rapprochement with the culturally famished generation that is Gen Z. The First Time was the debut record that followed, mounting such quick movements onto a single disc: heartbreak, mental health, identity retention and the inebriate deliriums of youth were all explored. Now the artist follows up with an expanded edition and Deluxe Version, which comes newly backed by the all-capsing 'YOU NEVER FORGET YOUR FIRST TIME', hearing singer Elisha Herbert sing ruefully of her eagerest yet most disappointing young liaison.

Review: BBE, known for its groundbreaking J-Jazz and J-Jazz Masterclass series, now shines a light on an inerasable gem in Japan's national discography: the debut LP Rainbow Love by Orquesta Del Sol, the country's first authentic salsa band. Salsa's roots in Japan trace back to the post-WWII era, with groups like Tokyo Cuban Boys, but it was the 1977 Fania All-Stars tour that initiated wider interest. Percussionist Masahito "Pecker" Hashida, influenced by New York's salsa scene, formed Orquesta Del Sol on his return. Their debut, put out in 1981, blends compositions in Japanese, Spanish, and English, while working in a cover of Noro Morales' 'Rumbambola'. Produced by Shuichi "Ponta" Murakami, the album's bold sound was a product of Japan's studio scene and the band's connection to the Nuyorican salsa style. This reissue includes seven bonus tracks from the band's later years, remastered for a new generation.

Stylistically, it's hard to imagine Arctic Monkeys' The Car era without Hawley writing this album. Yet despite pedaling a different, more garage rock style at the time, Alex Turner's respect for Hawley goes way back: when the Monkeys pipped Hawley to the post and won, Turner exclaimed, "Someone call 999, Richard Hawley's been robbed!" As for other comparisons, Hawley's similarity to Mark Lanegan's husk is hard to ignore, especially when he lets rip. However, when he delivers softer timbres, like on the serene 'Coles Corner', he evokes Frank Sinatra's decadent tones and the majesty of the string sections are an ornate joy, complementing it perfectly. Turner had a point in his acceptance speech... this is prize-winning stuff and finally getting a thorough reappraisal because of the re-release with half-speed remaster.

Review: Californian noughties post-punk revivalists She Wants Revenge are a must for any fans of Interpol. In paying homage to greats such as The Cure and The Chamelons, they wear their UK post-punk influence on their sleeve and do it with conviction, style and their own personality. Blessed to have been mixed by one of the best in the business in Michael Patterson (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Beck) there’s no denying it’s an audiophile achievement – a big sounding major label rock album that's now getting reissued. Of the singles here, ‘Tear You Apart’ is a risqué banger and probably not one to put on loud when the grandparents are visiting.

Review: Serbia's Abul Mogard inaugurates his Soft Echoes imprint - after many a career-spanning stopover with Ecstatic, VCO and Light-years - with Quiet Pieces, an inward-looking suite unearthing stillness and submerged emotions scraped from the edges of memory. Assembled from archival sketches and fragments inspired by a late uncle's collection of 78rpm classical and opera records, the album reimagines faded moments through manipulated samples played at altered speeds, filtered through effects, and folded into new compositions. The result is a dream-static fusion of past and present, where Mogard's own recollections blur with an avuncular other's. The pieces shimmer with spectral density and tactile distortion, edging into abstractions influenced in part by Phill Niblock's Boston Tenor Index; Mogard pushes into rawer and rawer dissonances over the record's course. Marja de Sanctis's cover photograph, taken at the Temple of Jupiter Anxur, captures that same interplay of decay, reverence, and resonance.

Review: Prolific Italian maestro Black Loops returns to Freerange with Always Moving, a debut album steeped in high-grade dance heritage. Drawing on over a decade of production, he moves beyond club tools to something more personal and musical, with guest appearances from Harvey Sutherland, Byron the Aquarius and Marlena Dae. Rooted in funk, soul and 90s grooves, these are rich, warm tracks with fully authentic swing i with much of the percussion played live by the artist himself. The result is fluid and human, from the broken beats of 'CDMX' to the shimmering chords of 'Detroit Love Letter'. Marlena Dae adds her touch to several standouts, including the disco-leaning 'Electrical' and hazy deep house of 'Pleasure Ride'. Clearly drawing inspiration from early jazz-house production but adding new ideas to that, the record combines dynamic dancefloor rhythms with crusty drums reminiscent of classic hip-hop and live horns as well as traditional African drums. It features Adrian M Nation from Antigua and Barbuda and Millicent from South Africa on vocals, while Aussie Horatio Luna is on bass to make this a truly pan-global and richly musical affair. By merging live instrumentation with late-night club vibes in this way, Analog Recital really impresses.

Review: The New Jersey-born pianist returns to the studio here for the first time since the sudden loss of bassist Scott LaFaro, whose death in 1961 marked a devastating rupture for one of jazz's most intuitive trios. Now joined by Chuck Israels on bass, Evans leads with a newfound clarityiless conversational, more contemplative. Recorded in 1962, this was the group's first step into a quieter but no less daring phase. 'Re: Person I Knew' (an anagram of producer Orrin Keepnews) sets the tone: ghostly, elliptical, and harmonically dense. 'I Fall in Love Too Easily' and 'Polka Dots and Moonbeams' drift by in breathy half-light, while 'Very Early', a waltz penned by Evans, closes the set with delicate finality. In the absence of LaFaro's dancing counterlines, Evans doesn't fill the space, but lets it speak. The result is a study in restraint: American post-bop pared down to its emotional core. Not a debut, nor a reinvention, this is a quiet reckoning and a beautifully unresolved response to loss.

Review: Originally released in 2005, Feral Hymns would serve as the 11th (and true final) full-length from Washington D.C. devout Dischord Records alumni Lungfish. Having released every album apart from their debut with Minor Threat/Fugazi visionary Ian MacKaye's label, they were easily one of the longest lasting on the roster when considering the longevity of their peers and labelmates in say Jawbox or Shudder To Think. Continuing their consistent aura of experimental first wave emo stripped down to caustic, murky minimalist compositions, the material sticks to their established formula but embittered by the passage of time, while the commitment to their signature style is also more illuminating in hindsight, as the group would semi-disband, or at least cease writing/recording following this release, with members branching off into other projects. While 2012's A.C.R. 1999 is often perceived as their 12th LP, that release was comprised of older recording sessions, making it technically a compilation and Feral Hymns their definitive swansong.

Review: Two years on from the release of his Ubiquity label debut, the hard-to-pigeonhole Balearic/global musical fusion set that was Da Cuckoo YaYa, self-taught producer and multi-instrumentalist Reuben Vaun Smith returns with a fresh full-length. Once again, the warming, colourful and effortlessly atmospheric set is both gorgeous and hard to pigeonhole, with the Yorkshire based artist variously doffing a cap to dream pop, yacht rock, blue-eyed soul, shuffling downtempo soundscapes, soft-focus AOR synth-pop and sun-bright Balearic beats. It's the kind of set that not only impresses on first listen but also grows on you with each successive listen. Review: Across two records, this trimmed-down version plays like the sleekest statement of intent: less a full retrospective, more a distilled transmission from Robert Smith’s inner sanctum. From the moment Paul Oakenfold’s ‘I Can Never Say Goodbye’ rework opens proceedings — lush strings, half-submerged vocals, and a cinematic pace — it’s clear that curation, not just contribution, has shaped the form. Orbital turn ‘Endsong’ into a glistening spiral of sequencers and tension, while Sally C’s raw house take on ‘A Fragile Thing’ ups the pulse without disturbing the gloom. Smith — still unmistakably the same outsider from Crawley, West Sussex — guides things with restraint, letting the space speak louder than the noise. Four Tet’s version of ‘Alone’ closes the first disc like a forgotten lullaby, cracked and glinting. You don’t get every remix — the more textural, post-rock turns are gone — but you do get a sharp cross-section that keeps faith with both atmosphere and momentum. It's the kind of record that feels designed for the night: not to lift it, exactly, but to sink into it willingly, track by track.

Opener 'Never Lost' sets out the warm, melodic terrain, before 'Sweetie' flips into a lilting, drum-machine-led love song. 'Closer To Me' and 'My Father In Heaven' offer hazy, introspective turns, while 'Idea 5 (Call My Name)' featuring LULU and the Azekel-assisted 'Three Piece Suit' sharpen the edges with silky, syncopated swagger. Review: This is Sophie at her most unruly and most exacting. The Glasgow-born producer disassembles her debut and reanimates it as a 94-minute, two-part odyssey, veering from hydraulic club destroyers to delicate ambient unspoolings. Originally released in 2019, it’s not just a remix collection but a wholesale reinvention: self-authored, nonlinear, and often sublime. ‘Ponyboy (Megadog)’ thrashes through chrome-plated rhythms with chaotic grace, while ‘Infatuation (Midnight Zone)’ pulls back into pure atmosphere, full of liquid clarity and hushed suspense. There’s a tactile, metallic intensity to everything here — especially on ‘Faceshopping (Euphoric Reduce Me To Nothingness Remix)’, which warps the original’s plasticity into something wilder and more abstract. The album’s sequencing mimics the logic of a club set or memory — sonic ideas introduced, warped, returned to — but what lingers most is the emotional palette: euphoric, alien, intimate. Sophie’s sound across the project fuses dancetechnoambienthouse into a sculptural, shape-shifting form that foregrounds identity and sensation. At a time when many remix albums serve as filler, this stands apart: fiercely curated, radically personal, and technically peerless.

Review: Ryo Fukui, one of Japan's most revered jazz pianists, takes centre stage in this re-pressed live performance, capturing the height of his artistic maturation at the 9th anniversary bash of Slowboat, the jazz live house he founded. At 56 years old, Fukui's playing is a stunning blend of power and delicacy, showcasing a balance of energy, technique, and depth that defined his later years. Accompanied by Kosuke Sakai on bass and Yoshito Eto on drums, the trio delivers electrifying renditions of pieces by Phineas Newborn Jr., Tommy Flanagan, and Wayne Shorter, all of whom had a significant influence on Fukui's style. The performance, now recaptured on its own 30th anniversary, not only reflects Fukui's fascination with greats, but captures his own distinct voice and voicings.

Review: Few albums define the 80s quite like this one. The band's fifth and - by far - most successful release at that point it's now celebrating its 40th anniversary with a fresh vinyl reissue, ironic considering the millions of CD players sold using it as an advert for the new format the the time. Opening with 'So Far Away', the album establishes its signature polished sound, blending Mark Knopfler's emotive guitar work with smooth, melancholic melodies. But it's 'Money for Nothing' that cemented Brothers in Arms as an 80s icon. Featuring Sting on backing vocals and driven by Knopfler's famous riff, the song skewers MTV culture while paradoxically becoming one of the decade's defining anthems. 'Walk of Life' brings a contrasting brightness, its upbeat keyboard melody making it an enduring favorite. The album also shows Knopfler's gift for storytelling, particularly on 'Your Latest Trick' and 'Why Worry', which balance pop sensibility with emotional depth. But it's the title track, 'Brothers in Arms', that delivers the most haunting momentiits atmospheric, war-torn balladry elevated by one of Knopfler's most stirring solos. The 40th-anniversary vinyl pressing gives new life to the album's lush production. One of the first fully digital recordings, Brothers in Arms benefits from the warmth and depth this analogue reissue brings, bringing out the richness of Knopfler's guitar tones and the album's expansive soundscapes. Four decades on, it remains an essential listenitimeless in both its musicianship and its message.

Review: Laibach and A/political present Alamut, a new, symphonic album inspired by Vladimir Bartol's 1938 novel of the same name. Recounting an 11th-century Persian tale - centered on the charismatic and enigmatic Hassan-i Sabbah, leader of the Nizari Ismailis and founder of the Order of Assassins - this is a shadowy, ninja-black-wax initiation into an esoteric order of spies. Laibach's work blends classical Persian poetry, minimalist orchestral textures, and industrial elements, reflecting both historical propaganda tactics and Bartol's critique of rising Fascism in 1930s Italy. Released on double vinyl and CD box set through Mute, the album was recorded in 2022 at a former Crusader castle in Ljubljana; it features the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra, Tehran's Human-Voice Ensemble, the Gallina Women's Choir, and the women's accordion orchestra AccordiOna, conducted by Navid Goharib.

Review: Freestyle deliver a curate collection of overlooked UK street soul and boogie from the 80s and early 90s, with standout tracks from the label's recent 12" reissue programme. The collection houses a special mid-90s gem from Manchester's Gold In The Shade, with accompanying photos by Andrew Holligan and liners from Kevin Le Gendre. The sleeve was shot in Hackney, East London, where a vibrant street culture flourished despite the strictures of the Thatcher era. British music evolved at the same time, as larger ensembles shrank in favour of smaller groups with synths, letting boogie's smooth, bass-led sound find life. This transition, alongside the rise of street soul, budded and blossomed a uniquer blend of indie and studio projects, imprinting lastingly on the culture, now repackaged and again represented in The Way U Make Me Feel.
