Home Boy (6:18)
I Wanda Why (6:01)
Thiba (6:19)
Stoppa (6:07)
Review: For the latest release on his much-check Afrosynth label, DJ Okapi has once again turned his attention to the early days of South African Kwaito music. "I Wanda Why?" contains a quartet of cuts plucked from the 1994 album of the same name by Sea Bee, a vocalist who pretty much disappeared without a trace afterwards (this is in sharp contrast to producer Spokes H, who continued to be a key part of the Kwaito scene until his death in 2013). There's much to enjoy throughout, from the bouncy piano riffs, squeezable synth-bass and dreamy chords of "Home Boy", to the glassy-eyed female backing vocals, mid-tempo pump and shimmering, rush-inducing vibes of "Thiba". Closer "Stoppa", a more downtempo and atmospheric Kwaito excursion, is also superb.

Thsilidzi (5:21)
Si Ya Jola (5:14)
Review: La Casa Tropical's latest release draws on the extensive back catalogue of P.V.P (short for Patience, Violence and Pinky), a South African trio active during the 1990s. Although well known in their home country during the original Kwaito era, they remain unheralded internationally. The two tracks showcased here first appeared on their fourth album, "Malende". First up is title track "Thsilidzi", an undeniably gorgeous Kwaito classic built around mid-tempo house drums, Mood 2 Swing style organ melodies, sun-bright synth riffs and the band's evocative group vocals. Flipside "Si Ya Jola" is almost equally as impressive, making use of a similar sound palette and an even stronger vocal. Like the very best Kwaito records, both tracks are joyous from start to finish.

Guess We Found A Way (4:10)
Review: Famed for their thrilling, dancefloor-friendly fusions of West African funk and disco, American electrofunk and post-punk pop, Ibibio Sound Machine is one of the most exciting and essential bands of recent times. It's for this reason that "Doko Mien", the Eno Williams fronted band's first album for two years, is so hotly anticipated. Happily, we can confirm that it's another stunning set, with Williams and company charging through a set of sizzling songs that wrap kaleidoscopic synths, rubbery bass, fiery horns and off-kilter funk-rock guitars around grooves that variously doff a cap to '80s electro, Italo-disco, jazz-funk, Tony Allen and thrusting, mind-altering mutant disco. In other words, it's another must-have collection of cuts from the London-based band.

The Sieve & The Sand (part 1) (2:13)
The Sieve & The Sand (part 2) (2:36)
Review: On their 2018 double A-side single, "Atlantico/Canto Del Sol", Brooklyn-based seven-piece Combo Lulo gleefully joined the dots between Jamaican rocksteady and South American Afro-Latin music. "The Sieve & The Sand", their sophomore single, is an altogether different proposition, though their love and knowledge of Caribbean and Latin American music remains at the forefront. On the A-side "Part 1" version, the band layers fluttering flutes and fuzz-soaked guitars atop a bounding ska rhythm, offering a breezy and sun-kissed take on one of Jamaica's most popular musical styles. Arguably even better is "Part 2", where the band's intoxicating, woodwind style motifs lazily float above a deep, head-nodding dub reggae groove.

Review: As part of their 20th anniversary celebrations, Strut has decided to bring back the compilation series that first put the label on the map: "Nigeria 70". Curated by Duncan Brooker, this latest volume in the series is the first for eight years. It's another history lesson, with Brooker largely focusing on exposing the musical links between the music of Nigeria and Benin. You get a white-hot mixture of Highlife, Afro-Funk and Ju-Ju, mostly hand-picked from albums and singles that are near impossible for mere mortals to find. Interestingly, this edition doesn't just contain heavy cuts from the '70s, but also more synth-powered songs from the 1980s, too. As you'd expect, it makes for terrific listening.

Review: Tired of what they describe as "overseas stereotypes of Brazilian music", the ethnomusicologists and indigenous music diggers at Sound Miracle Recordings have decided to try and put the record straight. The result is "Brazil Primitivo", a new compilation series focusing on archive recordings of traditional Brazilian rhythms and styles from the late early portion of the 20th century. Volume 1 makes for fascinating listening, offering up 34 mostly short and sweet recordings of turn-of-the-20th century accordion-driven Portuguese language folk songs, exotic-sounding traditional dance numbers, crackly field recordings of vocal performances and drum-heavy tribal chant-alongs. For those whose knowledge of Brazilian music extends no further than samba, MPB and Azymuth style jazz-funk, "Brazil Primitivo" is a genuine eye-opener.

Review: In 1970, 23 year-old Brazilian vocalist Celia Cruz headed into the studio with legendary producer and arranger Arthur Verocai to record the first of four eponymous albums that would go on to become "MPB" classics. Here, Mr Bongo offers up a timely reissue of that highly regarded debut, a set that giddily flits between soaring, orchestrated samba-pop ("Cheia Durango Kid", "David"), sun-kissed ballads ("To Be"), tributes to the songwriting prowess of the Beatles (see "Abrace Paul McCartney", whose strings tip a wink to "Eleanor Rigby", and the brassy, up-tempo beat pop of "Lennon - McCartney") and carnival-ready workouts ("Fotograma").
