Review: The Ubiquity "Choices EP" series features multiple artists, all exclusive tracks - all killer no filler. Milez Benjiman is brand new talent, and his "All The People" is an exclusive cut. Hailing from the 4Lux crew out of Belgium this tasty mid-tempo freaky future soul cut is backed by a rough 'n' rude b-line and electronics for a mix that breaks musical boundaries and should appeal to DJs of all shapes and sizes.

BINNYSINGSREDNOSEDISTRICT
Abcdefg
Review: Leave it to me to come up with a cunning plan to sell Benny's wholesome soul to the devilish underworld of music. I asked Aardvarck and Steven to call him up: "Heya Benny, why don't ya come to our Rednose Distrikt Night?", as if they were inviting him to a party. At the time, The Rednose Distrikt nights at Amsterdam's Bittersweet club were "a very inspiring night out" as the rational critic's opinion read but more like a near death experience, for a real Rednose soldier like Benny turned out to be. Anyway, that night I took Benny along. He whistled a song of his upcoming third Benny Sings album when he entered the Rednose Distrikt and immediately forgot everything his parents taught him. There they were, Aardvarck and Steven de Peven as reliable as my great-grandfather's soldier comrades in the trenches, kicking the shit out of their laptops to the point of spilling guts, happy slapping granny, spray-puking vodka-lime, fisting a freaking' frump. To cut a long self-obsessed biography short, Rednose Distrikt fed Benny a heap of itchy beats and sickly groovy sounds. Benny fell to the floor, his head turned 360 degrees, steam came out of his ears, bubbles out of his nose and he looked like he was about to give birth to Rosemary's Baby. Then Aardvarck gave Steven the sign. They dragged him on stage yelling like a bad actor in a 'Nam war movie: "Sing Benny Sing. Sing or die!"

Review: Spymusic, known for their track "Cloak" on Dego's 2000 Black imprint, as well as for their releases on their own DMS Country, deliver a broken uptempo version for the more advanced dancefloors. Jneiro Jarel, hottest hip hop cat of the moment, who was pushing boundaries on his excellent LP "Three Piece Puzzle" on Amsterdam’s finest Kindred Spirits, delivers a deep soulful slow version full of great beats! Also comes as instrumental! London’s don Phil Asher brought us a very soulful, excellent Restless Soul dub version.

Review: Sunshine Enterprises is proud to present Champion Soul featuring Ronyx "Holdin' On Part 1". Champion Soul, well known from their releases on IG Cultures label Mainsqueeze, as well as for their nice debut LP on Japans Lifeline, consists of Andrew Edward Brown and Malik Williams out of New York City. "Holdin' On", which was around for a while creating some buzz on CD-R and picked for release by Sunshine Enterprises, they team up with singer Ronyx to create a broken anthem! Furthermore to the great original, there are some excellent remixes, DJ Kiva brings us a deep spaced out version. London don Phil Asher brought us a very soulful, excellent Restless Soul reinterpretation that will fill dancefloors worldwide. House at its best, dancefloor pressure! All different styles, and it's all good. Big up to all the artists involved!

Inner Light Joaquin Joe Claussell Sacred Rhythm (Cosmic Arts version) (9:48)
Inner Light Joaquin Joe Claussell Sacred Rhythm (Cosmic Arts dub version) (10:11)
Review: Something of an all-star affair here, as Sacred Rhythm main man Joaquin "Joe" Clausell sprinkles some of his remix magic over 'Inner Light', one of the standout cuts from Nicola Conte and Gianluca Petrella's 2021 album People Need People. Whereas the original was a richly percussive, dubbed-out future jazz-goes-dub house affair, Clausell's versions are warmer, looser, jazzier and deeper. Check first the A-side 'Cosmic Arts Version', where Rasahan Ahmad's poetic spoken word vocal rises above broken beats, layered jazz horns, warm bass, glistening guitar kicks and warming electric piano keys. The flipside 'Cosmic Arts Version' is, if anything, even better, delivering dubbed-out percussion, mazy trumpet solos and trippy effects aplenty. In a word: essential!

Future Music (instrumental)
Review: Daru is a hip-hop producer from Michigan, and also drummer for Slum Village and Dwele and has produced for the likes of Tableek
(Maspyke) and Ab (Slum Village). Reggie B. is a singer/songwriter from California who did collabs with Saadiq and Wajeed of the
Platinum Pied Pipers. They join forces and come with their debut album for 4lux Recordings called 'Future Music'. This is a sampler 12"
with tracks from the album and exclusive bonus material. The title track 'Future Music' is an infectious soul groover which mixes soulful
vocals with warm Fender Rhodes. The bonus instrumental is included too. Next up is 'I was wrong'; a heavy Daru beat carries Reggie's
vocals to full effect. 'Good Love' is based upon chopped-up hip hop beats and songwriting. The bonus instrumental of this one is included
too. Then there's 'It's Not A Game' a dope production with occasional vocal snippets. And last but not least there's the free-spirited 'Stay Free'
with backing vocals by Jeff Byrd.

Review: Promoting his limited vinyl series from the 7" league to the 12" premiership, Diesler's Buried Treasure brand provides its biggest beat bounty to date. Charged with a thriving sense of turbo funk and broken beat mischief, each cut screams carnival and peak time perkiness. The tight horn harmonies and percussive textures of "Smokin Jo Crow"; the slower, seductive boogie-based jam "In The Loop"; the tight, jazzed out Bugz-style stomps of "Rokko Loko"; the acid wiggles and tropical riddim of "Lullaby"... Modern Funk Sampler

The Fantastics! - "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose"
Speedometer feat Ria Currie - "Answer To Mother Popcorn"
Review: Freestyle serve up 2 James Brown tributes as a sampler for the recent Modern Funk compilation. It has been argued that 2007
was the year that the underground funk movement finally started to make its presence known in the mainstream. Huge selling
artists such as Mark Ronson, Kanye West and Amy Winehouse spearheaded a movement towards a more organic and authentic
sound, selling thousands of records in the process and whisking bands, who have been gigging in small sweaty clubs in the UK
for years, off on world tours. The music itself harks back to the golden years of Motown, Watts and Stax, as well as hundreds of
unknown smaller labels, but given the all important production values of the 21st century, making it perfect for the dancefloor -
hence the tag 'Modern Funk'. The a-side finds The Fantastics (previously known as Reverend Cleatus and The Soul Saviours)
getting busy with The Godfather's 'Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose', sticking pretty close to the original but slapping their unique style
all over it. Over on the flip Speedometer and Ria Currie take on 'Answer To Mother Popcorn', originally a Vicki Anderson number,
giving it a update for the dancefloor in 2008.

Review: The electronic minimal funk of Filewile's "Damn" paints the perfect soundscape for New York Rapper RQM's brilliant anecdote about a ride on the A-train on a rainy Sunday. On this tune rhyme and music blend in rare harmony to create a funny, crisp and sexy image of an only too familiar situation. Two remixes accompany the original version, one by Jahcoozi and the other by the Round Table Knights. The extra track is a dubby reggae tune named "Forward", featuring Rider Shafique of the Son Of Man/Pressure Drop camp.

Gallowstreet - "52 North" (feat Lyma - Soul Supreme remix) (5:02)
Shamis & Rebiere - "Backpack" (Soul Supreme remix) (4:04)
Review: Soul Supreme is a master keyboardist best known for his covers of classic hip-hop songs by the likes of Mos Def, MF Doom and A Tribe Called Quest. Here side-steps his covers duties to handle remix productions for two of his contemporaries in the Netherlands neo-soul scene - Gallowstreet, LYMA, Shamis and Rebiere. The A side lends a wonky future house feel (a-la GoldLink, Crackazat) to '52 North', Gallowstreet's ode to the city of Amsterdam. The B tune strips it back to a lo-fi soul bapper, fleshing out its theme of loneliness in parenting.

Review: Heralding a quarter century of service for one of Italy's best-loved record stores, three certifiable house troubadours join forces to offer up tracks of the finest calibre, not least if you love old-school flavoured Chicago house music. Glenn Underground is up first with the Latino-tinged roller "Spiritually Captured", all charming chords and lightly drummed percussion. Isoul8 brings a more gutsy kind of acid house that both punches in the bottom end and bubbles delightfully on top before joining up with Ricardo Miranda for the sublime "P Boogie". Combining heartbreaking arpeggiated twinkles with expressive bass and luxuriant pads, a truly spellbinding track is crafted, and it's certainly not one to miss out on.

Review: While rooted in jazz, the output of Bristol outfit Ishmael Ensemble has always incorporated elements from different styles - something we attribute to main man Pete Cunningham's prior career as a DJ and a producer, as well as his long involvement in the eclectic-minded Bristol music scene. It's perhaps fitting then that the band's latest missive is a five-track collaboration with another West Country hero, MC, singer and producer Rider Shafique. His role as a "dub poet" is explored on largely ambient opener 'C90 Intro', while he channels the spirit of Tricky and Massive Attack on jazz-meets-trip-hop jam 'Polestar'. Elsewhere, 'Reasons' is a hazy, rising and atmospheric contemporary jazz song, 'Salam' is a harp-infused ambient soul song, and 'New Era' is a thrilling jazz epic.

For his latest project he links up with lyricist and MC Rider Shafique. They first met some six years ago when Cunningham was struck by "his powerful way with words." As such they got in the studio, Cunningham embraced a more bass heavy sound to his style and drew on his love of the likes of dub kings King Tubby and Adrian Sherwood. Coupled with Rider's voice and you have a superb new record.

Review: With previous releases on Far Out Recordings, Sonar Kollektiv and Oye Black Label, Croatian producer Jan Kincl returns with a four-track EP in collaboration with Regis Kattie. Titled It's Been A While, it consists of three original pieces like the dusty, Sunday afternoon open-air vibes of 'Love's So Far Away', followed by the equally deep 'Day By Day' which similarly channels that classic Detroit house vibe - think Andres or Big Strick. Speaking of which, there's a remix of 'Just This' by one of their Motor City contemporaries, Kai Alce, over on the flip - this one's pure bliss.

Review: Here's something to make the heart sing: two recent future classics from long-serving Japanese nu-jazz collective Kyoto Jazz Massive, remixed by awesome West London keys-man Kaidi Tatham and similar long-serving British duo De Lata. Tatham delivers sublime vocal and instrumental reworks of Roy Ayers collaboration 'Get Up', re-casting the track as a sun-soaked, slowly rising slab of soulful gorgeousness rich in broken house beats, dazzling electric piano licks, rubbery jazz-funk bass and spacey synths. Over on the flip, De Lata delves into their bag of Brazilian influences and delivers vocal and instrumental revisions of 'This Feeling' that sit somewhere between summery samba, afternoon-ready soul and life-affirming nu-jazz.

Review: Kyoto Jazz Massive's most recent album, the critically acclaimed Message From a New Dawn, was packed to the rafters with highlights, with their surprise collaboration with jazz-funk legend Roy Ayers, 'Get Up', arguably being the best of the lot. Here the track gets a deserved single release, albeit via two 45-friendly re-edits from Japanese scalpel fiend DJ Kawasaki. He subtly snips and chops the track on the A-side '45 Edit', finding room for both the various instrumental solos and vocal sections while keeping the original's focus and energy in-tact. Over on the flip he chooses to showcase Ayers' superb vibraphone solos, jettisoning the original version's vocals on an all-instrumental revision that's a genuine jazz-funk-goes-disco treat.

Such a distinctive, dreamy riff, instantly affirmative lyrics and eternal groove, it's what we call in the record shop game as a 'classic'. Review: After wowing ears with a brilliant EP of Marvin Gaye edits, Marc Rapson delivers his debut EP of original material. On the A Side Rapson slips between the jazzy instro hop of the title track and the looser funk of "From Shadows" with the sandwiched gleaming retro soul of "Love Is All" a highlight. The real shining moment however can be found on the B Side with the satisfying oriental crunch of "Click Loud".

Ras G & The ASP - "MDU NTR"
Sun Ra - "Nidhamu"
Review: Dublin based imprint All City delivers one of its most esoteric excursions yet, commencing a new series dedicated to the outer galactic jazz crusader otherwise known as the late, great Sun Ra. On the A-Side Ras G and The ASP offer a desnly atmospheric reinterpretation of 1971 oddity "Nidhamu", whilst the original version adorns the flipside. Excellent artwork from Stephen Serrato too!

Rasmus Faber - "Ever After" (feat Emily McEwan - Samba Reprise)
Elizabeth Shepherd Trio - "Four"
Abossa Eletrica - "Beleza Nao Vai Embora"
Boomish - "Smalls"
Review: Started in 1996 by music enthusiasts, DJs and compulsive record diggers Adrian Gibson and Perry Louis, Messin' Around was only expected to run for a few weeks. 10 years later and the session is still going strong - attracting crowds of music lovers from London and further afield. It seemed only right to release a compilation to celebrate this milestone for one of London’s longest-running jazz and boogie nights, but it was also essential to release some of these tracks on to vinyl for the first time. Leading the charge is Rasmus Faber with the tantalising "Ever After (Samba reprise)" setting the pace for the dancefloor. Following on is Elizabeth Shepherd with her fully-charged "Four" - exclusive to this 12". Over on the flip, Abossa Eletrica drop the fantastic "Beleza Nao Vai Embora", whilst Boomish finish things of with the be-bop jazz sound of "Smalls". Essential music for the more discerning dancefloor!

Cobra
Review: Whilst Basement Jaxx might have a clutch of chart toppers in their arsenal, the London duo have never been shy to retain the link to the underground house scene from which they rose as well as indulging in some experimental deviations. As well the recently released Basement Jaxx orchestral album, the duo's excellent Atlantic Jaxx label serves up this physical version of Simon Ratcliffe's decidedly hard to categorise solo endeavour Doris Rijkers. Originally released digitally to less fanfare than it deserves, the vinyl edition is a thing of beauty with a intricate embossed sleeve washed in a hand printed design - it's the kind of record you've half decided to buy before you even get to the music. Which is revelatory, spanning everything from spasmodic synth freakouts akin to Dam Funk wired on LSD to Battles meets Squarepusher in the car park for some signature eschewing dust ups. More of this please Mr Ratcliffe.

Grany's Thought
The Way You Love Me
Late Nights
Dusty Blues
Review: Listening to The Raw Interpreter's third and latest missive, the Grany's Thought EP on Warm Sounds, you can easily imagine a hooded figure working the machines and literally punching the samples into the title track. Sampled keys twinkle and frolic above a beat down kick and two-timed claps, while basic percussion is effectively employed to create that perfect loop. Pow pow hip hop beats paired with a clatter snare introduce "The Way You Love Me", as a mumbling vocal backed by a filtered choral loop enters, later topped with plucked strings looped to infinity. "Late Nights" is a complete analogue jam devoid of samples until, like the rest of the EP, a loop of keys and cut up vocal snippets enter, thus creating another rough and ready groove. The final track "Dusty Blues" could well be a borrowed version of Dusty Springfield's "Learn To Say Goodbye", only given a thorough and blitzed out Warm Sounds raw interpretation.

Review: After focusing on new funk and Afrobeat on the latest releases, Tramp Records are now back on the track to discover some more rare and obscure funk tunes. "Strut Your Stuff" is a midtempo masterpiece led by a strong bassline which contains a wonderful wah-wah guitar solo. Donald Ray's vocals fits perfectly, it could not have been done better.

Review: Very limited and very tasty seven inch from the Re:Jazz third instalment of classic clubs tracks acoustically transformed. Coldcut's mesmerising "People Hold On" gets respectfully jazzified, and even Jon Moore from Coldcut has given his full approval for this little jazz masterpiece. Accompanied by the Tobias Kremer Big Band and containing ample amounts of swing and groove this tasty little seven inch is sure to be a collector's item very soon.

Review: Read is a DJ's DJ. Be they online or in the club, his extensive retrospective of funk, soul and hip-hop are not to be missed. So it comes as no surprise that this sounds like an old re-edit instead of his own production. Laid back and full of Latin spirit, it's screaming for some summer justice. And to keep us warm until then? Bastard Jazz's Captain Planet has come to the rescue with an organic percussive D&B blend. Near-on essential, we pito the fool who doesn't pick up on this!

Review: The fifth volume of the Really Swing series sees the label tap up the talents of Florence-based duo Ether - better known under their solo monikers of Colossius and Biga - for an 8 track EP of experimental beats. Opening with the off-kilter electro-funk of "Castanger" the duo then move through a wide range of styles, including the radiophonic library music sampling of "Deepfiba", the chopped up Tropicala grooves of "Pupatales 2" and the dub fusion of "Pupatales 4", all of which is delivered with some deft MPC flair.
